Let me start off by saying it is a RARE find to see Korean BBQ in Dayton, only a few places but it always peaks my interest. With a name like Sima Korean and Japanese Restaurant and large banners advertising there sushi lunch buffet and half price sushi you'd expect very simple or unimpressive food, you'd be surprised! This is a charming location with a friendly staff. We came in on a Wednesday night around 9:30 PM and were seated right away. Though we didn't order kbbq this time around I saw the vents for where you could cook the meat at your own table. Always fun! Definitely will try next time. We ended up ordering sushi as we were craving some. There was a large variety of sushi rolls to choose from, we ended up getting the Playboy Roll, Alaskan, Spicy Tuna, Sunday Morning, and oddly my favorite the I Don't Know Roll. Not only a quirky name but it was delicious! Lightly fried and chefs choosing made it memorable. Generous portions for the price you're paying. Will definitely be back! read more

The cold weather finally got here and we were looking for something warm and comforting - the wife was in the mood for yaki soba and I was looking forward to a big bowl of ramen. To sum up: 1. Service was very good - super friendly for the most part, helpful, quick. 2. The food was ok - the yaki soba had great flavor, but for $12.99 (and she got it w/o the meat) and the amount served, it's a bit too pricey. 3. Ramen, for 9.99, lacked much flavor or any vegetables to speak of - just broth and noodles, again - not much for the money. 4. The ambiance is very good - a nice place and again, you'd never believe it was a Frisch's. 5. Both sushi rolls were good - not fantastic, but the spicy cali roll was my favorite of the day, and for 5.99 the most bang for the buck. It's SO close to home, but I'd rather make the drive to Saya or Siam Pad Thai for the money. read more

Some of the best Korean food I've had since I was stationed there. My wife and I selected different entree's and were both treated to excellent food and dining. Even though they were fairly busy I think every waitress stopped by to make sure we were doing well and had everything we needed. The korean bbq bulgogi was excellent as were all of the sides. Miso soup, rice, thinly sliced fish cake, thinly sliced and marinated dried squid, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots and home made kimchi. All were as good as I had in Korea or better. I tried a couple vegetable rolls from their sushi bar. They were well prepared too. For me if I had to choose between the sushi bar at Thai9 or here it would be a difficult choice. If your looking for good Korean and Japanese food coupled with exceptional service this is one of the places you must try. read more

This is the best place in town. Great food great people great service . my wife and I go every week for ramen on Thursdays and every other we go Friday as well. I highly recommend the Dolsot Bibimbop and the tonkotsu also the Korean Barbeque is amazing. They have some great sushi too. I love the cucumber roll my wife had the Sunday morning roll and she liked it. The I don't know roll is good, don't ask just try it. The hot tea is good, the bubble tea is really good. Sima is one of my favorite destinations in the East Dayton area. I love the sushi and the bulgogi, and if you're looking for a culinary adventure, their traditional menu is for you. Also, try the lunch boxes and the Korean sides. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because their service can sometimes be a little sluggish by American standards, but the food makes up for that , in my opinion. read more

A fantastic dining experience. Friendly, professional service staff and a clean, cosy atmosphere. I suppose a review for Sima would vary depending on what you ordered here. Our sushi was very good; I'd highly recommend the Firecracker Roll. The Bulgogi was not impressive, though. It was made with quality, tender meat but it was served swimming in liquid and looked/tasted like it had been boiled. So sad! I must say the service left us needing for nothing. I saw a couple other reviewers thought the prices were high. I agree. Even if everything was up to par, $18-$24 for an entree is high for this area and type of food. We were lucky enough to end up here on a Wednesday, when sushi rolls are half price. The regular menu lists all the rolls they offer but no prices. We got an order sheet with the "discounted" prices, but they seemed high for being half price. Many special rolls were $7.99 or $8.99, meaning they are $15.98 or $17.98 every other day. That's steep! From the time I walked into here, I liked it. The staff was friendly and joked with us, talked to us like we were regulars, and, most importantly, complimented me on my COACH bag =) Our server suggested the Sima Special Roll and we acquiesced. We also ordered one of the sampler platters with tempura, soft shell crab, and edamame. When all the dishes arrived, we didn't think we were going to be able to eat it all... BUT WE DID. It was delicious! The Sima Special Roll had just the right amount of spice and there was a dappling of caviar on top that gave it barely a hint of saltiness that made using any soy sauce unnecessary. The tempura was crispy and not at all greasy and the beef and its accompanying sauce, delicious. We will be going back soon and trying more of their spicy sushi! read more

Let me be the one who confirms that prices on certain menu items are a little steep here. Especially compared to equal portions and better taste at Young's cafe, for example. Specifically, the bulgogi. It was good, but expensive and not too spicy at all, which is what most people prefer; I'll concede that. The spicy california roll was fantastic. I wish I had gotten some salmon or tuna sashimi so I could rank the "real" sushi, but if I had to bet, I believe that would be good too. The waitstaff was new or unsure on what to do, but our party of 12 had few problems. There was a married Korean woman and her husband (who may own the place or are at least in management there), and they entertained us by singing karoke and telling obscenely inappropriate stories (mostly the woman). But it was entertaining, and I'm happy for it. Definitely will be going back. read more

Again Sima has let me down, this time we did a carry out order which included bulgogi chop Chae sushi and kimchi. Chop chae and sushi did not taste as good as other establishments and the kimchi was absolutely horrible. There is two strikes for Sima and I will never be going back and will not recommend this to anyone except for the recommendation of staying away. My boyfriend and I dine here all the time. The staff is always super friendly to us and the wait is always short. We go there so often the owner knows what we're going to order (creatures of habit). The half price sushi on Wednesdays is a great deal. If you're hungry enough during lunch for the all you can eat sushi bar, that's also a great deal. They have a ton of different rolls that you can choose from, plus you can tell it's fresh. The salad bar and all the veggies are super fresh and appetizing. If you go on a day when a deal isn't happening, it can be pricey. But be a smart consumer and take advantage of deals and half off days. Our first time, and we truly tried to love this place. Where to begin, first it took over twenty minutes to order because everything we ordered they said was no longer on the menu. And our poor waitress who was new, couldn't answer any questions. Then when we finally got something on the menu they said the meat garnish is no longer served on it and offered an extra egg. One dish came out way before the other dish even though the dish they brought out was a cold item, which smelled nothing like we have smelled before and have had many Korean dishes, my daughter couldn't eat it at all. The hot dish that came out barely had any meat on it and when questioned was told it was a garnish, but the menu didn't say garnish for the specific dish as all the other items did say with a garnish. The very sarcastic girl that came from the back who took over I guess for our new waitress said the menu was two years old and hasn't been updated. That it was changed to garnish. When questioned about the cold dish garnish of meat now all of the sudden that one was vegetarian. Very confused as to why menu is so outdated. Everything you asked for was an additional charge .50 or 1.00. For like a little more sauce then they give. I believe they are very over priced for the portions provided. Second it is very crazy to have the male owner (I am assuming) staring you down while you are eating in a not so friendly manner. Not sure why staring people down while they are eating is ever considered ok. One positive note is that the we did enjoy the sushi and happened to catch it on a 1/2 price night. I have no problem spending lots of money on friendly service, accurate menus, portion sizes that are somewhat reasonable for the price and not having someone stare you down while you are eating. And because our original waitress quit on us and the sarcastic one came from the back, we did not tip our normal 25% but did in fact still leave a tip. I truly wish them many years of success, but we will not be returning or recommending. We will just stick to the great ones we know Edit: In response to feedback from owner, as I see you respond to every negative feedback with why the customer was wrong. I guess I should have video taped the man staring us down in a nasty manner in order for you all to believe it. It was very uncomfortable. As for the cold dish, the waitress in fact did let us know it was a cold dish and she agreed to the cold dish NOT a double egg, we expected meat on both dishes. So instead of responding to things that are not the truth, please just take what folks are saying as constructive feedback and see how you can improve. We stand by our decision in wishing you the best but not returning. I've been here multiple times, and I either love it or hate it. The servers are very very kind and attentive on most visits... Though there have been a few where they couldn't seem to care less, and forget parts of my order. Sima's food is alright: their sushi is the best part. I got there a little earlier than my friend so I ordered a drink. I didn't realize that was going to be the only drink I was offered the entire 2 hours I was there. Eventually I had to stop the waitress from doing her, "Everything Okay" and running away bit to get her to bring me another drink. They have half priced sushi on Tuesdays and Wednesday in case you didn't know seeing as the waitress didn't bother to bring the menu to me initially. I had no idea they offered that. Thankfully my friend did. The sushi was good, but a little more expensive than other places I have gone. If you are in the area, I would recommend this place for you, but don't expect the wait staff to notice your empty glass or offer anything above the basic stuff so be prepared to always have to catch them to get something. Overall the experience was decent. I wouldn't go back out there again because it is kind of out of my way and the prices are a little bit more than I typically pay at places that don't offer half priced sushi. Also, if you didn't get my main message, the wait staffed seemed to not really care about my experience. Only cared about getting my order in and getting me my check to make me leave. read more

Came in from out of town and ordered up carry out based upon some reviews and service that the restaurant provided and will be back again when in the area. Ordered up $275 worth of food to have delivered to McGuffy's for my good friends who were performing there that night and the restaurant let me e-mail an order ahead of time and pay for everything so all I had to do was show up. There were some logistics issues on my end but the management staff was very accommodating and when I got to the venue Dakota and (I can only assume) the management were very friendly helping me carry and get situated. The food got rave reviews from all that were attending, the rolls were well made and the fish was very fresh - the chicken and beef was amazing. So going to Sima was kind of a roll of the dice for me. The venue looks interesting to say the least from the outside but I knew that they have the only Korean BBQ with grills at the table for the patrons of the restaurant to use that I have found near Dayton. I have wanted to experience this for quite some time so I decided to give this place a shot. Also, I love sushi and wanted to try that out as well. First impressions of the restaurant were good. My friend and I were greeted by a very cheerful and upbeat staff. Our waitress was amazing; very personable and knowledgeable. The Sima menu has some unique items on it that I have not seen before. For example there was a High Tower roll that apparently is a giant sushi roll on a bed of greens that you cut down the center when you get it, have it collapse on itself and mix it all together into some kind of sushi pile. Also there is the IDK roll where the sushi chef makes whatever roll he/ she feels like, deep fries it, and serves it up. You literally don't know what it will be. My companion ordered one of those and it turned out to be a fun way to eat sushi (we ended up with a crab stick roll). Sima seems to like to have fun with eating and I like that. But I was here for the Korean BBQ! This was also a great experience. Cooking my own meat at the table was great, the meat itself tasted amazing, and the unlimited Korean sides with the BBQ were a great addition. I also ordered some assorted sashimi to get a read on how the quality of the fish was in the sushi here and I must say I was presently surprised. The salmon melted in my mouth and the baby octopus nigiri was great (I love baby octopus and not many places have it). My friend I was with also got a bibimbap and loved it. All in all, good Korean BBQ at the table, great quality meat with a great tasting marinade, sushi and fish quality was better than expected, and the general feel of the place was that it was more than just an eat and get out restaurant and it was a place with a fun vibe. When we get there we were told that it was already booked and there must have been "a cut in the line on the phone" I don't see being possible given that we even asked for the bbq menu and they put us on hold to find it on their Facebook. My husband and I have been dining at Sima for over 2 years now. We are "regulars", and go at least once a week. We are on a first name basis with the owners and manager, and cannot say enough great things about this establishment. In our many visits, we have never once experienced ANYTHING close to what Ilan G. (fellow Sima reviewer) experienced. The food has always been fresh, delicious, and consistent. One time, we went for dinner, and the owner prompted my husband to order something new. He took the suggestion, but unfortunately, the taste/texture was not for him. The manager immediately offered to bring him his usual dish, and there was no charge for the suggested meal. As far as cleanliness, we know for a fact that they have received the highest rating you can get from the food/health inspector. He says that if all Dayton restaurants were as clean as Sima, he'd be out of a job! Next I will talk about service. We are always greeted as soon as we walk in the door, water brought to our table as soon as we sit down, and the food is always brought out in a very timely manner. It does not matter if we are one of many or the only table being served in the restaurant, the service is consistently friendly and professional. As for the menus, you will be greeted with descriptions and pictures to help you make your decision. They are very clean and easy to read. My husband and I would HIGHLY recommend SIMA to anyone living in or near Dayton as well as anyone visiting from out of town. It is perfect for the seasoned Korean/Japanese diner and is also a great starting point for anyone curious about Korean/Japanese food. I used to go to this place, which has some decent sushi. I stopped going here though because the meals were ridiculously expensive. Seemed very over priced based on what I was ordered. If I am not mistaken, a meal for 2 people with sushi and then an entree each was somewhere near $75 or so. I would have expected a price range around $45 - $55 tops, but the extra $20 just seems too expensive for a restaurant who has average-to-good food. read more

Every time I eat here is great. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is the wait. It takes awhile for the waiters to ask for what you want and also the meal teams awhile to get to your table. The servers though are amazing, they all have great personalities and recommend stuff if you're unfamiliar. The sushi here is really good. I try to get different sushi most times but I've been enjoying their sunflower roll the most these days. I need to try different items from there menu but what can I say I love sushi. I enjoy their bubble tea it is sweet and delicious. Their drinks are good they definitely don't hold back on the liquor which is great. The environment is a very Asian style which is nice. Sima was a great experience. Ate there last night with 3 friends. We ordered an appetizer (Gyoza, which was good, not great) and 2 sushi courses (Spicy salmon roll, and one other I can't remember) which were both great. We then ordered entrees, tofu and veggie as well as beef teriyaki, which were both good, beef bul gogi which was EXCELLENT, I highly recommend this dish, as well as a spicy tofu and veggie hot pot. The soup/broth of the hot pot was amazing, very very spicy, but complemented everything great. Non of us cared for the traditional korean side dishes much (Kim chi was good, others were alright), but that was our tastes, the dishes themselves were obviously prepared well. The staff was great, and every question we had was answered. The chef also sent us out sushi free of charge to try at the end of our meal. Obviously a sign of respect and appreciation of the fact we spent a bunch of money, but the sushi he sent out was very very good and we enjoyed it and were extremely surprised by this. I recommend this restaurant, but I do say it was a bit expensive (average $16.99 or so for each entrée with sushi around $10-$11 per course. Dinner for four we spent $120 after tip and tax. Overall quality of the food for the price was excellent. Great date restaurant as atmosphere and food is complementary. read more

Delicious and friendly great service!! For $75 we had a generous serving of both pork and beef bulgogi with Korean sides and rice which come with the entrees. We had gyoza and 2 sushi rolls: spiced crunchy shrimp and Sima roll plus 2 beers Kirn! We ate half of all and brought the rest home for dinner tomorrow! We love this place!! read more
