Been a long time fan of Sima. Staff wasn't as friendly in the past. Sushi was great but after we paid our bill with a nice tip we decided to stay for a glass of wine. We were told we had to move to the sushi bar for that because they limit tables to 1 hour and 15 minutes. There wasn't anyone waiting for a table and plenty of empty tables. Poor business we will have to search for another sushi place. Poor customer service like this is what ruins restaurants. read more

We love the owners here. They have been nothing but kind to us every time. They really care about their customers. We come here quite often, as it is the only place in the Dayton area that does Korean BBQ (that we know of). Pros: Food is always great and served quickly! Having lived in Suwon for two years, the flavors are authenticly Korean. Cons: The Bbq combos need to be remade..they aren't very good deals. We have to order a lot more than we need to get the meats we want, because the a la carte prices are so high. We are not a fan of the chicken bulgogi, which we have to get to save money on the combo and usually waste. For a meal for four people, we usually spend $150-180 plus tip. Not a cheap meal lol Last time we were there, the waitress spent most of the time talking to her friends instead of serving us. If you know Korean bbq, you know you need refills often of banchan or sauces...Previously, the owners have been super fast and nice about these refills. This time, the waitress told us she had to charge us for lettuce and was giving us very tiny portions of the banchans for four people. Not even enough kimchi for one person, let alone four lol Its a petty point, but randomly charging for lettuce on a $180 tab seems a bit ridiculous. In every other korean Bbq, lettuce is included. We recommend the kimchi jeon, mandu, and the jae yook pork for bbq. read more

I ordered galbi tang for 16 bucks. It was good, but way too expensive. I don't think I've spend that much on soup before ever in a Korean/Japanese restaurant. The owner chick is some Pathologist...she told me she was a doctor about 3 times and told me that the food that she makes is good for me...because she's a doctor of pathology she told me...because she knows she told me. This is and forever will be my go to date night, celebration dinner, birthday spot or if I ever need some good Korean comfort food. I don't review many places but this one has been a long time coming. I lived in South Korea for 2 years and grew to love the food there pretty quickly. This is really the only place around to get a little bit of everything if you're craving Korean and want to have everything be top notch. Recommendations for the Korean side of the menu include the Dduk Bo Kee (spicy thick rice noodles), Dol Sot Bi Bim Bop, Jap Che, the pork belly on the grill table, Bul Go Gi and Kal Bee are all very good. The sides are all made fresh in house and range from good to great every time. The sushi is good and you should definitely try it if you're hungry for it. But go and check out the Korean dishes and you'll not regret it. It can get pricey if you go full Korean style and order a stew, and some other dishes along with the grill table but I've never left thinking I'll skimp next time. read more

The owners here take a lot of pride in their work and are very friendly. Do yourself a favor and try the Kimchi and the Playboy roll. If you're paying the menu price, both the entrees and Sushi are excellent. The lunch buffet leaves a lot to be desired and I suggest you skip this. This is pricier, but I think, in this instance, you get what you pay for . Have been to SIMA 4 times; it it has been flavorful, high quality, and excellent service each time. We had vegetable tempura- love their light, crisp batter and fried pork dumplings which were great. I get their version of sweet and sour chicken ( pineapple and orange sauce)and add a drizzle of their Bibimbap sauce which was suggested by their head waitress the last time I ate there when I asked about a way to add a little heat- and it's perfect because can add as little or much as want, but still maintain the sweetness of the dish. It also has green peppers, onions, apples, oranges, and pickled English style cucumbers which as I type, doesn't sound like it would go well together but it is delicious. My husband got their pork bulgogi which already has the Bibimbap sauce - Is a flavorful spiciness not just spicy to be spicy.. my husband was concerned because he normally does not get pork at Chinese restaurants because he can only think of dry gray pork with red stripe. However, once the waitress explained that they slice their own meat from pork loin so it's fresh, he was willing to try and he was glad he did, He ate the whole plate( and it was a good sized portion) with extra helpings of Japanese side--he has rarely been eating a whole plate anywhere since his appetite has been down but he said couldn't stop because it was so good. Again, is pricier, however, you will get quality and flavor profiles that you are not going to get anywhere else. read more

One of my most favorite sushi places is Sima! They have a very welcoming staff! Ms Kim remembers the regulars by name. She is always offering different suggestions based on your pallet and never meets a stranger! For me, the all time favorite is the play girl! They use a sesame oil to heat up the sushi, knock the cold off. When the meal arrives at your table they take a skillet, light it on fire, place the sushi roll over the flame and heat it up. The sesame oil creates a sweet sauce that compliments the roll very well! On this trip I tried the Monkey Brain appetizer. I'm not a fan of mushrooms but this dish is delightful. It's a spicy crab filing inside a mushroom coveted with bread crumbs. Very good with washabi mayo. Very delicious and awesome people! read more

Not what it used to be . Service was good but food was mediocre at best . The Takoyaki seemed very undercooked but the Goyza was pretty good. We ordered tonkatsu (pork) as well as Kimchi jjigae , japchae, Teryaki beef , various sushi items , and dolsot bibimbap among other items. The japchae was okay as well but nothing special . Overall everything was not what we remembered . Restaurant was also completely empty which was a bit surprising . We may possibly return in the future but not anytime soon. read more

I have never dined at Sima, but I have ordered take-out three times in the last year for me and my husband. On our first try, we asked them to recommend a good dish and they suggested we try the "Playboy Roll". We like it so much, we have not tried anything else. The roll is wrapped in foil, doused in flammable liquid and lit on fire for about a minute, then blown out. This warms up the roll nicely and gives it the smoky flavor. It's devine! This is the first time ordering sushi using DoorDash. It was delivered in the quoted time and arrived nicely packaged. I ordered the Philadelphia roll, Mexican roll and crazy spicy California roll. My friend and I made an impulse decision to come check out Sima. We have both never had Korean food. The server was incredibly nice. I wish I remembered her name. She was very patient. We ended up ordering two entrees and splitting them so that we could share. We got the Jap Chae and TangSooYuk. Both of them were AMAZING. I have never had sweet potato noodles but I think I have a new favorite noodle. The TangSooYuk was like a sweet and sour type of sauce but much lighter and it came with fried chicken pieces and mixed into it was a bunch of vegetables and fruits, including pineapple, carrots, apples, cucumbers, etc. Since we had never been to a Korean restaurant before, we did not know which sides to order. They give you the option of ordering either Japanese size or Korean sides. The Japanese sides are your normal ginger salad dressing and miso soup. The Korean sides are vast, and they include normal kimchi, cucumber kimchi, and like three other types of pallet type cleanser salads whose names I completely forget now. The waitress was super kind and super enthusiastic about us trying all of them. We told her we were not sure, so she brought us a small portion of every single side that normally comes with an entree. Normally you can get like a full side for each person, but she gave us enough so that we could try each one. They were great and I would super recommend them. Also, all of the staff were wearing masks, everything seemed to be cleaned and sanitized. The restaurant seems like it was already set up for social distancing even prior to the pandemic, so that was nice. The booths have high walls so you still get a private experience. The ambience of the entire restaurant was really nice and relaxing and a super enjoyable experience. I will definitely be coming back. read more

Wow! We are so glad we finally went to Sima. The staff and service was amazing! My salmon teriyaki was probably the best salmon I've ever had, and wife really liked the chicken katsu. Our son got a sushi dinner and it was awesome. The sushi chef came out and ask him how everything's was and showed him how to mix the soy sauce and wasabi and what to do with the ginger. It was the very cool. We had a great time and can't wait to back again! read more

I was expecting authentic Korea food and was recommended by a friend to come here. The food is okay but the taste is not really that great, a little "blank". The side dishes were generally okay but even the kimchi was a little too soft and processed than an authentic Korean restaurant would be. After all, the price is high although their service is good. I am only visiting this area. So not likely go back there again. read more

The times on here are inaccurate, so I waited over 30 min to get in. I ordered the buffet which was quite expensive. The buffet had a lot of different sushi but I'm not a huge fan of just sushi. they had chicken bulgogi it was good but very sweet almost to sweet to eat. also fried rice was good, and udon noodles which were ok. I wasn't overly impressed with this place nor the price I believe 16.99 for the small buffet also they had miso soup again ok. I probably wouldn't come back but at least I tried it :) read more

Went with a group of 5, and we got kimchi jigae, squid dolsot bibimbap, kalbi beef, and regular dolsot bibimbap. We also got some cocktails. The entrees were okay, but this restaurant is pretty expensive compared to other japanese/korean places. The kalbi was pretty disappointing though. For 26$ youd expect a LOT more beef, but half of it was all bone. The cocktails were good, also pretty expensive (10$ for a martini). And of course the prices arent really listed on a majority of the menu. Id suggest you go to Akashi, Sekai, or Ozu in englewood. Not an awful place just crazy expensive. read more

I recently visited Sima for lunch. Upon arrival, we were one of two tables in the entire place. That kinda scared me, but it was early (11:40ish). The good thing was everyone in the place was more, uhm, authentic than us (we were the only white folks in the place :-)). Sima touts itself as a "Korean, Japanese Sushi Grill BBQ Restaurant" - that's pretty accurate. The sushi menu is typical sushi fare, with some added specialties - we tried an assortment of sushi and it all was impressive. The Sima roll (somewhat spicy) is very good. Salmon and Tuna were fresh and had good taste. There is also a normal grill/lunch menu (I didnt check out the dinner menu) which had the usual suspects for Korean and Japanese fare. While I have not tried non-sushi at the restaurant, I have tried Sima's bulgogi and various meats at the Dayton International Festival recently, and was very happy. Service was very prompt, polite and attentive. The atmosphere is authentic, complete with sushi bar, full alcohol bar (well, maybe not authentic but who can resist scotch at lunch?), and nice ambiance. Prices are acceptable - a large sushi lunch for 3 of us was around $50 w/ salad/soup/soft drinks. Lunch combo's were in the $8-10 range. Overall, a very good experience. I was concerned that with the lack of customers when we arrived that the place might not be open long. That concern was gone when we left, I hadn't noticed but the restaurant was about 70% populated. Had very high hopes for this restaurant. But was disappointed the whole meal. It started from the very begining and continued all the way through. I can't remember when I have had such bad service or poor quality of food. We ordered the gyoja for an appetizer. My wife got 2 rolls and I got the chicken katsu. After about 10 mins, my chicken katsu was delivered. The waiter said is there something wrong. Why would I think it strange to get one entre before the appetizer? We asked about our appetizer and he left again. He brought the miso soup and salad but no gyoja. A waitress brought it over and was puzzled on why our appetizer was just coming out. That is what we want to know!!! Then remarked that the rolls would be delayed because they were backed up. So now its 45 mins later and my chicken is cold and she is just getting her meal. My wife said the rolls were OK but not special. The gyoja was luke warm and soggy like they were left in tepid water or forgotten somewhere in the kitchen. The had no taste. I have had tastier wall paper paste. Pretty much after that we did not see any staff for a long time. They never came back to ask how it was. I would not ever choose to eat here again. There are many restaurants in Dayton that are better. Thai 9, Saya, and Osaka Japanese Steak house, just to name a few. read more

"Wow! What is this place? Have I finally found a decent sushi place in Dayton?" Nope. I will say that I would be the first person to carelessly throw my money at a good sushi restaurant in Dayton. But sadly I haven't found that place yet. And now is when I remember that I am in the Midwest. Midwest + Good sushi = Probably not. The prices here are a tad steep, which I wouldn't mind if the food was good. I'm not saying it was terrible, but it was far from great. If you are reading this, and wanting some sushi, then I will tell you that Sima is more on the Korean side of the Japanese/Korean Fusion spectrum. Which brings me to my next point, they don't have a good selection of Soju, and our Korean waitress had never heard of yogurt Soju. I thought that was odd. But you came here to eat right? Not drink, so onto the food. As a starter I ordered Agedashi tofu. I love the stuff. And as far as Agedashi tofu goes, Sima you get a solid "A-" from me. And then I ordered the playboy roll. Nothing to write home about. It was kind of bland, but not to bad. I wanted to try some of the nigiri style sushi, but I was told the price was for one piece, and not two, as per the usual when it comes to nigiri. Oh well never mind then. One of my three favorite restaurants in Dayton. Menu is diverse and unique. It has something for everybody. They always have some interesting special features, too. Presentation is like a work of art. Owners are warm and accommodating. They treat you like you are family. Recently, they introduced a new menu with smaller portions. My boyfriend and I ordered a Bulgogi dinner (18.99), an avocado roll, a TNT roll, and a crazy California roll. While the Bulgogi and panchan was good... I think the TNT was lacking. I have worked at a sushi bar that had this exact same roll. I feel as if this roll was soaked in oil. I understand it's a deep fried roll, but I've had plenty of sushi, including the deep fried variety. This roll could be better with a little more effort. The mochi was terrible. I am very sorry for saying that, but it was either stored incorrectly, at the wrong temperature, or for too long. The outside had a strange wax-like consistency, which I assume is from drying out in the freezer. The total bill was about $70 (before tip.) While that's just a bit above average for a sushi restaurant, the quality of the food did not match the price. However, we thought our waitress was very friendly, bright and cheerful! All of the staff, matter of fact, seemed very welcoming. For this reason, I do want to come back and try other menu items. read more

I'm a fan of any place that goes the extra mile to not just accommodate, but cater to vegetarians. Not too many veg options on the menu, but our delightful waitress and the hostess both took time to explain that they could 'vegetarianize' some korean dishes for me. I like that. And I told them that. I was happy on the Korean side of the menu - got bibimbap vegetarianized with tofu. A little lean on the vegetables, but the spicy-sweet sauce on the side, peppery pickled eggplant and carrot, and zingy kim chi made up for that, and added a lovely flavor note or two. Maybe I shouldn't expect LA spice in Dayton OH? Note to chef - some like it hot =) Portion size big enough for a moderate dinner and lunch the next day. The youngun stayed on the Japanese side of the menu - got his favorite miso soup, veggie tempura and cucumber roll. He's a happy camper with some pickled ginger. Parking is easy. The food was okay for Ohio standards. I didn't like that they didn't have pictures of the sushi and how the prices were listed on a separate sheet. The table was sticky and the floor was too... my shoes were sticking to the floor as we walked to our table. The rice was a bit hard/under cooked for the sushi dishes...The interior is out dated and cluttered... I felt like I was at someone's grandma's house... service was good but $70 for 3 types of sushi and a crap high tower... no thanks. I give one star because no star is not an option. From quality of service to the quality of food...this place is by far GOD -AWFUL The moment we walked in, we had terrible service from the waitress. The owner, who is Korean, specifically told us she hated dealing with Korean customers. The biggest complaint was you don't get enough food with how much you pay for it. Now this isn't one of those 5 star restaurants that serve a 10oz steak for $100.00. Now after we were seated the table smelled like the dirty wet rag they used to wipe the table down with and the menus we old and outdated, and were very sticky. (Someone should call the health inspector just in case) We ordered the hwehdup bap (seafood rice) you can google the term and look at images of what it's supposed to look like. They prepared it like they didn't give a damn. They tossed in some rice, stuck 2 sticks of carrots like it was a joke, and topped it off with a large piece of lettuce. Another person in my group ordered the jjirahssi. (another seafood rice) There was almost nothing in it aside from rice. this dish is supposed to be served with lots of vegetables and fish and sauce. Those 2 dishes are complimented with sides of a small salad and a small bowl of miso soup. (Like ALL sushi restaurants) We had to ask for ours...they made it seem like we were petty customers that wanted to milk them dry. Anyways, the food we ordered started coming out one by one. A few individuals from my group wanted a small bowl of rice to finish their dish...they charged us extra for what seemed to be 2 spoonfuls of rice in an over=sized bowl. Now for a table/group that ordered over a $400.00 bill there should be some sort of incentive to show appreciation of business. I'm not asking for gift cards or anything, maybe a sincere "thank you" would have sufficed. We didn't demand or yell, we politely asked if they had dessert for us. The 6 women in our group got half spoonfuls of vanilla ice-cream. What a f-king joke. Not only will I NEVER attend this place again, I will tell my friends and family, church groups and all that this place is garbage. Compared to this place McDonalds is a 5 star restaurant. read more

Let me start off by saying it is a RARE find to see Korean BBQ in Dayton, only a few places but it always peaks my interest. With a name like Sima Korean and Japanese Restaurant and large banners advertising there sushi lunch buffet and half price sushi you'd expect very simple or unimpressive food, you'd be surprised! This is a charming location with a friendly staff. We came in on a Wednesday night around 9:30 PM and were seated right away. Though we didn't order kbbq this time around I saw the vents for where you could cook the meat at your own table. Always fun! Definitely will try next time. We ended up ordering sushi as we were craving some. There was a large variety of sushi rolls to choose from, we ended up getting the Playboy Roll, Alaskan, Spicy Tuna, Sunday Morning, and oddly my favorite the I Don't Know Roll. Not only a quirky name but it was delicious! Lightly fried and chefs choosing made it memorable. Generous portions for the price you're paying. Will definitely be back! read more
