I want to share a bad experience with Silver Tree of Austin, TX, and its owner, Silvester, who snapped and cursed when the homeowner had concerns about his work. Although the quote from Silver Tree is 50% higher than the other quote we received, we selected Silver Tree because he could start within a week. And he put trimming and cut back tasks in writing. Significant issues with Silver Tree are as follows. (1) Undisciplined crew: On the day of service, Sylvester only stayed onsite briefly. The crew started working around 10:30 am, and then after Sylvester left, his team stopped working around 11:40 am. They ate and lied down in the yard. (2) Not doing the work in the written quote: Around 12:30 pm, we went outside to check the progress; his team did not do most of the work as stated in the quote. The oak tree in the front yard was not cut back from the driveway and the wall. In addition, the trees were unbalanced. We had to stay outside to ask his crew to trim and cut back the overhanging branches. (3) Cursing at homeowner: The trimming of the backyard oak tree was especially poor, and the tree looked messy and unbalanced. Sylvester finally came back after I requested his crew to contact him. After pointing out the problems to Sylvester, I went back into the house. After a while, the problems were still not fixed. I called Sylvester and calmly stated my concerns. Suddenly, Sylvester became irate and started cursing; then, he abruptly hung up the phone on me. I tried to call him again, but he would not answer my call. Then he and his crew left without addressing my concerns. Not recommended: In Silver Tree's "About the Business," Sylvester stated, "... provide professional, high-quality work ..." Our experience is exactly the opposite. The work quality is poor, and Sylvester is rude and unprofessional. I do not recommend his company to anyone. Silvester and his crew removed 5 huge hackberry trees and trimmed/clean-up 1 cedar tree that's over 100' tall!! in 2 hrs. They are ABOVE AND BEYOND! I requested the quote on Wednesday and they scheduled me for Saturday of the same week. Originally, we thought we would also remove a TX Laurel. We didn't necessary want to do it but it was struggling, it's leggy. Prior to this clean up, it was under the overgrown hackberries; thus, not getting the most sun like it should. Silvester told me he wouldn't recommend taking it out and that once the hackberries were out, it would get more sun and flower next summer. He told me "those trees are really expensive (because of the size) and valuable and make your house look great". To be honest, this is when we decided to hire him regardless of the other also competitive quotes because he showed me a vision and the potential of an existing great tree and prioritized the tree's life over making more money just to chop it up. Like I said: ABOVE AND BEYOND! They also cleaned up extremely well at the end and even raked up leaves from the same area, which they didn't have to. We have "a tree guy" now. read more

12/3/2022: Once again, Sylvester came through! I started by getting a quote from another well-known company. They offered to trim my trees for $X (but not before their arborist consumed an hour of my valuable time chit-chatting about trees and carbon cycles and a lot of interesting stuff that I, quite honestly, didn't have time for). The arborist texted me later that day and offered a $100 discount if I would place a yard sign advertising their business in my yard, bringing the total cost down to X - $100. I then looked through my records and realized that Silver Tree had done my tree trimming 18 months prior, so I contacted Sylvester through Yelp and asked for a quote. He stopped by later that day, spent just five minutes touring my property, and later texted me a quote of X - $220. I would have accepted his bid even if it had been the same as the other guys for the sole reason that he was respectful of my time! The fact that I saved $120 in the process was icing on the cake. (We had used them in the past for smaller jobs, but this was a much larger job.) His crew worked two days cleaning out many dead limbs from five live oaks in our front and back yards, broken limbs from a cedar, lifting a large hackberry tree, and other trimming. The biggest job was cleaning out dead branches from a very large 50-ft Spanish oak/red oak - an amazing job on it. At the end of the job, the yard was completely cleaned, down to the twigs. We had two really nice silver date palms (nice coincidence we picked the right company) that didn't recover from the February storm. Wife called Sylvester and he happened to be nearby. I spent 10 minutes with him to discuss the palm removal and some overhanging hackberry limbs from the neighboring yard. He sent her a quote and set up a time for three days later. They showed up on time and started on the palms. The roots were probably more stubborn than he estimated so ge brought an extra crew.
