No grade inflation here! This place did a masterful job repairing a picture frame that's been in our family for 40 years. It was part of a three-painting display on our hallway wall. When the hanger holding up one of the frames broke and the picture crashed to the floor, we thought we would have to replace all three identical frames since the broken one looked like a lost cause. Not so according to Mario, the owner of Silverlake Custom Frame. He promised the repairs will be made within 2 weeks and he was true to his word. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. I brought in a $500 print in July of last year. Was told I would get a call when it was ready. 2 weeks go by, no call. I stop by 3 times, place is closed each time. I go out of town on business. When I get back, I stop by, and they don't have my print. They don't know where it is. They have no record of me ever dropping it off. I show them my $200 receipt for framing. They say they'll call when they find it. Never call. They straight up lost my print, took my money, and claimed I never came by. Never gave me a refund, either. read more

So disappointing. I really wanted to support a local business, but SCF completely dropped the ball. I left a photograph and a resume to be framed, and worked out the details for when I would pick it up. When I arrived on a Saturday at the scheduled time, not only did I have to wait an hour before the owner showed up, but he also hadn't even framed my work! For my father's 65th birthday, I managed to find online an old bookmark produced by his grandfather's silk printing factory. It was a rare find, and I wanted to make it very special. The guy at Silverlake Custom Frame helped me pick out a beautiful frame, and he did a wonderful job of matting it so that you could see the full bookmark on the front, with its intricate edges, and then the back was glass too, and he designed a window in the matte so that you could see the printing on the rear of the bookmark. It is the only remnant of that old family business that we have. And when my father opened the gift, he was very moved. He also commented on how beautifully framed it was. He was right. These guys did a terrific job with a complicated frame. They made something special that much more special, and I am grateful to them for doing such wonderful work. He did a great job on advising on frame, matte, and colors. He is a one man show but he produces excellent results in a short time frame. In order to meet my request of monday afternoon, he worked over the weekend to meet the deadline. The only reason I gave him 4 is because it was a bit pricey. They were able to in a timely fashion, and when there was a delay, the owner communicated that with me, but still kept a reasonable timeline for delivery. Mario made 2 phonecalls to get back to me, and had the shop open for longer hours for a few days so we could stop in. He did this, as well as made some generous offers and sincere apologies to make up for the days that the shop was closed. I appreciate that he is a human, and that these things do happen. I think the framing itself was okay. The glass moves a little, it's not laid in super tight. But he got the job done, it's light weight, and looks good on my wall above my drum set, which is just what I had hoped for. The price was very fair. read more

Wow! This Latino veteran framer of Echo Park sure learned about gentrification and how to do "white people's prices." Charged almost $90 for the EXACT same cheap framing job you can get on Fairfax and 3rd a Quick Art Frame for $20. I have went to the latter for 20 years. Lazy me...didn't want to make the long journey from Silverlake to Fairfax and 3rd. I paid the price. LITERALLY. So angry. SO ANGRY! We're not living in times where we can afford to lose money! So...the conclusion is this: Do not go here, unless you are wealthy and lazy in the neighborhood. I am not at all wealthy and lost lots of money. I should have went to my usual place. Don't fall for his smile and kindness. He's secretly laughing at you, assuming you are a trust fund hipster or a wealthy yuppie. This is a basic thin metal black frame backed with cheap foam core and a few screws. I was expecting real frame work and beautifully done for that crazy price. Didn't happen. read more

TERRIBLE!!! I took in 3 professional oil paintings in hand-painted frames, just to have the backing replaced. They weren't ready when I went to pick them up -- the owner said he "forgot them." He asked me to wait -- and then NAILED THROUGH one of the hand-painted frames. Two nails, POKING OUT THROUGH THE FRONT OF THE FRAME. Two holes. The frame is ruined. When I showed him, he said it was my fault, because "he used the original nails." Which WERE NOT drilled through the front of the frame when I took it in. No apology, no refund for the permanent damage to the frame. He wouldn't even wrap the paintings when I asked, just shoved them in a bag. An absolutely terrible, COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL shop. read more
