For the short version: this shop has absolutely unacceptable customer service, is incapable of scheduling repairs correctly, held my bike for two weeks without doing anything, and installed a popped tube that they charged me for.
I have been to this bike shop multiple times, hoping that they would improve with time because I desperately wanted to support a local business in my area. They failed me every time, and I am done giving them my business. First, I went in with a popped tube that needed replacing. The tech replaced the tube and I biked the short distance home. The next weekend, I pulled my bike out and the tire was completely flat. The only time I had ridden it was home from the shop. When I brought it back in they confirmed that the tube was punctured. I told the tech that he had just replaced the tube the weekend before and I had ridden the bike a half mile home. I asked that the replacement be provided free of charge because they probably installed a punctured tube. He refused to comp the cost of the tube, but gave me half off. Considering this was likely Silver Cycles' mistake, I was not satisfied, but decided to let it go.
That was unwise. My second visit to the shop was to drop my bike off for a tune up because I was going out of town. Linda, the owner, looked over my bike and wrote up an estimate. She said the bike would be ready in two weeks. Two weeks later, I came to pick up my bike. Silver Cycles had done absolutely no work on my bike in the two weeks they had it. At no point during the two weeks did they contact me to let me know it was going to take longer. In fact, had I not gone in to pick up my bike, who knows when they would have gotten to it. I commute using my bike, and often work late during the week. I also had a ride scheduled for the next day. I asked that they expedite the work, and Linda assured me that a mechanic would stay late to complete my bike. That evening, I received a call saying the work would not be completed, and that my bike was very dirty and it was delaying the work. None of this was noted when Linda originally examined my bike when I dropped it off. At this point, I knew I was going to miss my ride. I called again the next day and was told it would take another one to two days to complete the work. I informed Silver Cycles I would not be paying full price for my tune up because they were unacceptably late, had caused me to miss my ride, and were now affecting my commute into work. I was assured the work would be done in two days. The next day, I received a call from Linda saying they still hadn't started the work on my bike and did I still want the work completed. I cannot express my frustration with this call. I decided it wasn't worth the stress and hassle of continuing to deal with such an unprofessional, disorganized, disrespectful business. I cut my losses and plan to pick my bike up immediately. My bike has been with Silver Cycles for over two weeks now, they have done no work, I have missed a ride and days commuting into work, and I will still have to find another place to tune my bike up.
Every time I had to interact with Linda, she refused to accept any responsibility for her poor planning and lack of communication. When I asked that they offer me some discount, she would not budge, despite the fact that she had inconvenienced me multiple times. I understand that work may pile up quickly, but this treatment is unacceptable. I encourage anyone thinking of going to Silver Cycles in Silver Spring to think again. Life is too short to give your business to people who don't respect your time, who overcharge you for poor work, and who are all around unpleasant human beings. read more
