    Chengdu dumplings
    Kim V.

Takeout review: I read that this is not your normal Chinese takeout spot so I had to check it out. They serve authentic Chinese Szechuan cuisine and has locations in West Hartford and Fairfield. I ordered the hot appetizer, Chengdu Dumplings which are steamed pork dumplings with their special garlic sauce; this was sweet, spicy, and in hot chili oil. The flavors were delicious and I should've ordered two of these to make an entree. For my entree, I had the crispy chicken in spicy garlic sauce. Since this was a takeout order, they had the sauce in a separate container so the chicken won't be soggy. Before pouring the sauce over your chicken, make sure to shake it first. The sauce was okay and not that spicy. I probably wouldn't order this again. The next time, I want to try our the Dan Dan noodles, Seven Flavors Wonton, Spicy Cumin Beef, Chong Qing chicken, and many more. The prices were definitely higher than other Chinese spots. Overall, a good Szechuan spot for your non typical Chinese dishes.

There is standard Chinese food. This is not that. This is authentic Szechuan just like their original restaurant in west hartford but without having to go to Wesr hartford. It's just a takeout place too. But so so good. I had the hot and sour soup to start. Legit and got a good peppery kick. Thick but not gummy this was one of my favorites I've had in a while. The dumplings were next. Loved these. Fresh and real good. And then the cumin beef. Woo does this have the spicy! But man I loved this dish. Reminded me of my too rare visits to Shu. This is the place you've been waiting for. Go and get it.

Authentic Chinese food. This is, simply put, the best Chinese food in all of CT. Genuine flavor, utmost care, outstanding flavor - this is not your typical Chinese food. This is an experience. This is the only Chinese food I ever want to eat- period. Amazing restaraunt- I enjoy every bite. I would go through the flavors + try to explain, but ; sorry, I don't have the words to do Shu's food justice. If youve never had real Chinese food - The Chinese foods you think you know, they're not these. You will be delighted by a new world of cuisine to explore! Only one pointer, this coming from a pepperhead who eats Ghost, Scorpion & Reaper peppers: respect the Sichuan Pepper. Try it Medium your first few times, then work your way up. This isn't a hot peppers capsaicin heat, it's a different type of heat - closer to mustard/wasabi heat. Enjoy - you will have your favorite Chinese restaurant after you try Shu!

Sapporo Premium Beer is Japan's oldest beer brand, founded in Hokkaido in 1876 by brewer Seibei Nakagawa. Known for a crisp, refined taste with a clean, dry finish, it is a pilsner-style lager (roughly 4.7-5.2% ABV) frequently packaged in iconic silver cans. It pairs well with Japanese food and is known for its high-quality ingredients and brewing standards. It was founded in 1876 during Japan's Meiji-era modernization in Hokkaido, it is the nation's first and oldest beer. The world headquarters of Sapporo Breweries is in Ebisu, Shibuya, Tokyo, and it also operates a renowned museum in Sapporo. As for taste, it's a golden-colored, light-to-medium-bodied lager with mild bitterness, a subtle sweet malt aroma, and a sharp finish.. While technically a Japanese beer, many cans sold in the U.S. are brewed in places like Escondido, California, and Richmond, Virginia, Key products include Sapporo Premium Lager, Sapporo Black, and Yebisu. This is THE beer to have with this cuisine (Chengdu or Szechuan). This is good! It's ice cold too! For our appetizers, we are having the Steamed Vegetable Dumplings and Spicy Flavored Jelly Noodles which are dressed in scallions, ginger, garlic, celery and cilantro. These are good! They come with soy sauce. The noodles are made from mong beans. Mung beans (Vigna radiata) are small, green legumes native to India, widely cultivated in Asia, and known as green gram or moong bean. They are a highly nutritious, versatile ingredient, rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, used in both savory dishes (soups, curries, noodles) and sweet desserts, often sprouted for increased nutritional value. Mung beans are easy to cook, require little to no presoaking, and offer health benefits like antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. I am also having the Seafood Hot and Sour Soup (small size). This seafood soup is good! Not too spicy! It's similar to the standard Chinese hot and sour soup in taste. For my entree, i'm having the Sliced Chicken with Crunchy Rice. This is made with chicken slices, crunchy rice, black fungus, ginger, scallions, garlic, pickled chili peppers, lettuce and pea sprouts. They fold the crispy rice and put it on top. This is piping hot! Spicy too! For dessert, we are having a Chocolate Truffle (made with Zabione cream center surrounded by chocolate gelato and caramelized hazelnuts topped with cocoa powder), Cappuccino Truffle (made with cappuccino gelato with a heart of espresso covered with coffee flavored merinique sprinkles) and Capps Pistachio (custard gelato swirled with chocolate and pistachio gelato ago topped with praline pistachios). Zabaione (or zabaglione) is a classic Italian dessert made from whipped egg yolks, sugar, and sweet wine (traditionally Marsala) cooked gently over a double boiler until light, foamy, and custard-like. It can be served warm as a sauce over fruit or cookies, or chilled as a standalone dessert, often garnished with berries or biscotti. The name comes from the Venetian word for "whipped," reflecting its airy texture. These are absolutely great!

Lunch specials are smaller portion, but good for the price (raised to $12.95 now since my last menu photo) We split a lot of dishes because we couldn't decide: Wonton soup appetizer {4.5/5}: Loved how delicate the wontons were and the clear broth was great for a cold day. Tad too salty though. Lunch special --Braised pork belly {3/5}: Very tender, but kind of monotone in flavor. Very filling! Lunch special --Hot and sour gizzards {4.5/5}: This might freak people out in terms of texture, but I LOVE this texture. Good chew and pops of heat from the peppers and acid from the pickled green beans Lunch special --Cumin dish lamb {3/5}: kind of chewy and not as much flavor as I wished, but not bad! Chicken wings {3/5}: Crunchyyyy. Battered wings, not as much flavor as their chongqing chicken which I prefer, but not bad

Outside is very much a busy shopping plaza in not the best part of town. Inside is a completely different story. Very clean and spacious, lots of booths and tables. Decorated well and a lot to see. The staff were friendly but there was a slight language barrier. We fumbled through the menu and found some bites to try. Food came out relatively quick, and that was a bit to manage because there were a lot of plates brought rather quickly. We got pics and dug in. The bites were flavored well. Nothing felt too greasy or under seasoned. The white pepper chicken was very crispy. But not a lot of chicken on each bite. The sweet and sour soup was both sweet and sour, but balanced enough that you could keep on eating it. The dumplings were fresh noodles and the filling was spiced well. The only flop was the spare ribs. Really tasty sauce, but very little meat on the bone. Had to suck on the bones to scrape enough meat off to make it a proper appetizer. It tasted good, just was not easy to eat. Price for the area was high for the neighborhood. It's got the quality and the flavor to command that price easily, but it doesn't match the stores. It's really good, but know that you're getting the real deal sichuan experience. Expect some heat, some saucy fingers, and some bones, and you'll get some really good bites

This is filled to the rim! I love the fresh lychees! This is good! For my soup bases, I'm having the Chengdu Hot & Spicy soup made with bay leaves, fennel, Szechuan peppers, chili peppers, star aniseed, scallion and ginger. I'm also having the ChongQing Butter Pot. This is going to be a hot and spicy meal. They do have plenty of vegetarian options. The sushi was good btw. For my next drink, I'm having a French Martinj made with Tito's Handmade Vodka (Goose for us), Chambord and a splash of pineapple juice. This is cutely garnished and tastes great! For dessert, I am having the Coppa Pistacio which is custard gelato swirled with chocolate and pistachio gelato topped with praline pistachios. This is ice cold and yummy! The menu is online, viewable by scanning the QR code in your booth, and at the end then you pay at the cashier not through the website. We each ordered the mini hotpot with two broths and got a table full of meats and veggies and even ordered a second round of meat (in hindsight, that was too much and we weren't able to finish it all). The sauce bar was fully stocked, and the ingredients were fresh. The bowls and spoons were a bit hard to find though and I had to ask for a staff member for help. The fruit bar was a bit empty, but there was enough for a dessert. The wait staff was very friendly, though they kept forgetting to refill our water, and we kept asking them about it. Overall, a great experience!

Sidewalks were torn up but the place is hard to find with lack of signage. We were able to get seated right away, and looked through their digital menu. We got a smattering of dishes, wontons and dumplings, a sandwich and a ramen. Food came out in a reasonable wait time. We took pics and dug in. The 7 flavor dumpling was the star of the show. Light and thin dumpling wrapper, savory sweet sauce, plenty of filling. The pork dumplings were good, but the wrapper was thicker and denser. The twice cooked pork sandwich was pretty tasty, the pork needed to be more present compared to the veggies, but appreciated the crisp of the bread. The ramen had a good amount of braised beef and noodles. The broth needed a little doctoring to coax out some of the more savory notes. Broth needed more aggressive seasoning though. The price was not too bad for the area. It's kind of like dim sum, where you get a small plate for the price but it's all shareable and the flavors are good. It's not very well lit, gave the place a very dark air about it. But as a restaurant, it's pretty good. There's a lot of great places in that area, and this one's a good option if you're looking for small plates.

Visit #1 was for steamed pork dumplings, and two soups -Won Ton and Hot & Sour. The six dumplings ($6) were fantastic. Plenty of overall size with a thin noodle wrap, and a wonderful meat filling. I detected some diced water chestnuts in the filling which gave the dish a nice crunch. The dipping sauce that came with the dumplings was exceptional, so all in all, this was a fantastic dish. The Won Ton soup ($3.50) was stocked with five huge wontons, more than you usually see in comparable containers. And Lord oh Lord was my H&S soup ($3.75) excellent. Never mind that it was meatless, it was by far one of the very spiciest H&S soups I ever had, and that was fine with me. I can't tell you how much I loved it. Visit #2 was for two of their $8.99 Box Lunches, and they are quite a deal. You get one of 21 entrees plus fried rice and an egg roll. The $8.99 base price is for a chicken or tofu or vegetarian dish; upgrades to pork or beef or shrimp will be a buck or two more. Similarly, the $8.99 base price is for plain fried rice, but you can upgrade to beef or shrimp fried rice for $3 more. My wife ordered Snow Pea Chicken and I went for the Mongolian Beef prepared hot and spicy. My Box Lunch was excellent. The egg roll was full-sized, and not the slimmed down mini version you sometimes see in a lunch special. Yes, it was mostly cabbage, but tasted great and wasn't greasy at all. My Mongolian Beef was a winner with plenty of delicious and tender thinly sliced beef mixed in with onions, scallions, and peppers. It was prepared hot and spicy, and I loved it. Oh, and the lunch had plenty of fried rice too. The meals were so generously portioned that we each had half and will finish them up in a day or two. So that means we'll get 4 servings for about $20 total. And how can any Asian food loving Yelper argue with that?

Ordering was easy, just a simple call; pickup was also quick and easy. The parking lot was spacious and so was the restaurant. I saw people dining in there. There was a fish tank and the person that helped me was friendly. Prices and portions were comparable to other Chinese spots. I ordered the orange chicken combo with fried rice, crab rangoons, plain lo mein for my toddlers, and my husband had the general tso combo. The crab rangoons were A+++ definitely up there with the best I've had; thin fried wonton wrapper and a larger amount of creamy, cheesey, imitation crab filling. The orange chicken was good, I'd say 4/5; not the best I've had but it did the job. Everyone enjoyed their meals and we would order there again.

The restaurant was moderately busy during this lunchtime, with two waitresses taking care of the tables I ordered takeout for three of us, one order consisted of edame and a steamed chicken extra spicy with white rice, the other order was crab Rangoon and a vegetable fried rice. I chose the egg foo young lunch special. Both of my lunch guests were very happy with their meals, including raving about the crab Rangoon. My egg foo yung was just OK. The reasoning was it seemed like it was deep-fried in old oil that tasted a little burnt. The egg foo yung was very watery. As noticed on the bottom of the takeout container. The white rice was on point. The gravy provided was extremely watery. Overall, I would score the egg foo yung a 3.7 out of 10. The price for the three takeout meals was $36 and change. I thought this was a pretty good deal. Next time I come back, I won't be ordering the egg foo yung. I will try something else. Overall, if you're in the area, and need a quick lunch, this would be a decent choice.
