Great food seafood platter was delish!! And the fact that it was close to work was a plus!!

This is the only Chinese food place that I have ever gotten food from in WINSTED. This time was different, usually the kitchen is so clean and shiny . Not this time. It was as grungy as you could get. The man cooking didn't even speak English and he was the only one there. Not the same man as before. The food...my fiancé got General Taos chicken and they put actual RAW BROCCOLI in it. It's was cold and hard. I am a Chef and this wasn't cooked. Also I ordered FRIED Dumplings and they sautéed them for one minute in 1 tsp of brown sauce. Why weren't they dropped in the fryer? I got chicken lo mein and the chicken was this weird crunchy crap. China Star is a very good restaurant, especially if you're looking for something inexpensive as well as quick. The quality is very good for a restaurant you might expect to be lacking. The service is well, with the chefs and workers doing their best at providing an awesome experience. The store itself is cozy, with a few decorations to add to its atmosphere. I will say, though, that it looks a bit unclean and could use some touching up. read more

Honey chicken was not good at all. I love how usually the glaze gets a crunchy feel and it's usually sweet. Not at all h with this place.

Beef Chow Fun was dreadful. Almost no beef. 99% noodles and not flavorful. Also had the sesame noodles...ugh! I had to add my own peanut butter to give it flavor. A total waste of money. Threw out all of it..lesson learned. The place was filthy. I looked up at the AC unit and it was covered in mold. I should have known better than to stay but I was in starvation mode. read more

I'm honestly shocked that this restaurant got almost 5 stars. It is the most disgusting Chinese food I've ever had. The general tsos (yes misspelled) chicken was stringy and over cooked, egg rolls were nasty, lomein was dry and tasted old and the crab rangoons tasted like shit. I'm still in disbelief people think this tastes good. My husband even brought leftovers to work and had his coworkers try it and they agree that it's the worst they've ever had. China Star may seem to be one of those generic chinese food shops that dot the landscape, but don't be fooled: the food here is very, very good, fresh, and ample. We've had all of the staples over many years and we've never been disappointed - the consistency is remarkable. The only menu items we've not had are the hot and spicy selections - but my neighbor says that that stuff lights you right up. Another great thing about China Star is that they will take care of you if you have special dietary needs or prohibitions. They are not hardcore against substitutions. And if you don't want to poison yourself with MSG, let them know and you'll get a meal without it. Talented people, great food, a clean shop ... thank you, China Star. read more

My husband and I love this place's take out. They don't have delivery, but I didn't subtract a star because practically no one in Winsted offers it anyway. I've gotten a wide variety of dishes from this restaurant, and I've only been disappointed once - that was over 4 years ago, so I think I'm good now. Our favorites are the moo shu pork (just make sure to order extra scallion pancakes), the bbq spareribs (boneless), and the lo mein. I love their fried wontons, as well. Very standard Americanized Chinese food, but they do it really well. It's the only Chinese place I'll visit in town. They are very prompt and are happy to make changes to the meal if necessary. The best part is that if you buy a certain amount of food, you typically get a freebie. I love free food almost more than I love Americanized Chinese food! read more

I have been going to China Star for years! They always have great food at a great price. Always quick service, too.

Rarely am I so disappointed in food that I toss it in the trash. Chicken with black bean sauce combo and coconut shrimp combo - both in the garbage. If this is Winsted's highest rated Chinese place, then I pity those folks who rated this place as anything good. We've all eaten Chinese all over the place but this place is terrible. I am super picky about Chinese food - as I've traveled to China and live in New York City, where we have access to very good Chinese. We are renovating a house in the area and felt like having Chinese and so found China Star on Yelp, where it had very good reviews. This place is a hole-in-the-wall, but I LOVE THE FOOD HERE AND WISH I HAD DISCOVERED IT SOONER. I'm a big fan of spicy and their Sichuan Chicken dish is REALLY GOOD. Very fresh, spice is great, and the vegetables were very flavorful. It's the kind of good I would call "memorably" good as I'll definitely be back for it. They are also super nice and proud of all their good reviews, as they well should be. THANK YOU CHINA STAR. We are fans. Also, you can't beat their prices and the portions are very generous. This has been my favorite spot for Chinese food for over 10 years. It's hands down the best around. Parking can be tricky especially if you have kids in tow. They forgot my General tso from the order, and over charged me from what the menu prices are. I'll still go back, the food is worth the minor inconveniences. read more
