ricardo pizza
Marc F.

made a reservation for late dinner on a Saturday night when we arrive. The restaurant was half empty, but lots of tables filled up throughout the night. The dining area is dimly romantically lit. They have a nice bar area for a solo dining experience or for waiting before being seated. I love to have the menu highlighted local oyster Farms, and even listed the farmers for all of their offerings. We started our meal with an order of bread, salad, oysters, and meatballs, and chose the Ricardo pizza for our main course. Dinner concluded with the Basque cheesecake with lemon curd and an espresso. Definitively should have opted for the tiramisu. The oysters were fresh and briney, a highlight of our meal, being so close to the ocean. The rest of the meal was just OK. The Basque cheesecake was a bit bland and probably could not stand by itself, but the lemon curd and they Maldon salt flakes elevated the entire dish. We enjoyed ourselves for dinner and would definitely come again when we're in town next.

We had a terrific meal at Short and Main last week. We were a party of six, including two kids and got a 5 pm reservation. They were great about the kids: we ordered for them just as we sat down and they brought their food quickly. The wine list is great, the pintxos and crudo were unbelievably good. There was a fine basque wine to go with them. The 2 year old inhaled the meatball. The pizzas were delicious. It was our last night of vacation and well worth it. Thanks for the server for patience.

A must-try in Gloucester! We made a reservation for a Friday night at 8pm and the restaurant was still very much bustling even during the later hours. The business I think definitely led to some slower service, but the staff (servers, hostess) were doing their absolute best to make sure everyone was happy. The inside is cozy with an exposed brick oven kitchen, red tile floors, and a chic bar. We ordered the house bread with olive oil - yum! The olive oil was drizzled over the bread and I think it could be a better dish if the oil was just served in a small bowl for dipping like how most places do it. Then we got the meatballs - wowowow. The red sauce is SO GOOD. Super tomatoey and fresh, a little sweet. Just so flavorful. The meatballs were regular sized, which was appreciated as some places do meatball apps that are like baseballs and way too filling. We enjoyed eating up all the sauce from the plate using our bread :) Then came the pizza. Fab! We had the Bert, a red pizza with that delicious tomato sauce, and the Funghi, a white pizza with a variety of exciting mushrooms on top. I think we preferred the Bert just because that red sauce is so amazing but both were really good. We took home leftovers and enjoyed them immensely the next day. Would definitely come back next time we are visiting Gloucester!

Wick cute place. A little tight inside and they had live music which made it a tad loud, but the music was good and enjoyable. The service was decent. The food was very good. We had the meatballs to start which were excellent. Very hot when they arrived at the table, cooked through, and the red sauce was something of note. Both pizzas were great. We will definitely be coming back.

The pizza was, of course, incredible. My sibling and I wanted to try this place after reading the NYT article about great pizza in the US. We got really lucky and were able to be seated about 5 minutes after walking in even without a reservation, which was super lucky. We watched a lot of bigger groups (4+) get turned away so I would recommend securing one before coming!! Our server was friendly and helpful, and she helped us pick out an appy and drinks. We got the marinated olives, the BOGO oysters, the Ricardo pizza, and Basque cheesecake. Amazing thin crust and tasty but not overpowering sauce, delicious toppings, genuinely the best oyster i've ever had, a dense, rich, decadent cheesecake, and simple yet delicious olives. Please secure yourself a reservation and try this place!!!

Funghi

The rigatoni ragu was precooked, then left in a bowl to reheat in the water quickly. It was over and mushy and misshapen. The ragu was tasty. None of that mattered, and I will now be (more) pretentious... It was a superlative pizza. Downright u-dough-pian. We had the funghi and the aglio. The funghi was the culmination of some poor perfectionist's trials to finally figure out it needed lemon zest. You were right. We added sausage to the the aglio, which complimented the best ricotta I've ever had. Both were delicious. We will back.

As I sat down to make this reservation after reading the NYT article mentioning this Gloucester establishment, I was beginning to have high expectations considering I'd have to make the hour drive just to try their pizza, but it was a risk I was willing to take. Pulling in to park near the restaurant, the first thing visible to us was one of the employees chopping wood in the back for their wood fired oven and a line around the corner before they opened. From there I had the inkling that this place was really legit. When they seated us our waiter was incredibly polite and helpful as he gave us his recommendations for pizzas to try. After viewing the menu it was time to order for our table of 3. To start, we ordered a dozen oysters (2 of each oyster offered) which came out cold, fresh, and incredibly delicious. The cocktail sauce accompanying the oysters was an excellent way to elevate the oysters as well. Now for pizza: we ordered the margherita, the ricardo, the funghi, and the louis primo. The pizzas themselves are pretty small so three to four is a good amount especially if your looking to try multiple pizzas. The margherita was very good but compared to the other pizzas the most basic. The freshness of the basil and the sauce elevated the margherita but at the end of the day it was the most simple. The louis primo was a step up with the cheese and sausage and a hint to heat with the peppers and onions and another must have. The ricardo similarly was delicious and the soppressata brought the whole pizza together. While all the pizzas thus far were incredible, the funghi pizza was the bell of the ball. The white pizza with mushrooms, cheese, onion, and a hint of lemon was the showstopper of all showstoppers. I appreciated that they didn't just cut up big mushrooms but instead used smaller mushrooms. The hint of lemon added acidity and zest that truly tied this pizza together. If there is one pizza that has to be ordered it is no doubt the funghi pizza. All in all I think the NYT absolutely nailed this review and frankly it's a shame Massachusetts doesn't have the Michelin Guide because believe me this place deserves more than its flowers, it deserves a star. When you have an italian like my father tell the waiter that this is the best pizza he's had in this country then you know its the real deal. I thought the oyster and pizza combo would be odd but it works so well that now I can't think of pizza without it. The locally sourced produce that they mention on the menu from the local farms adds an additional level of freshness that it hard to beat. I believe that this place might not only have the best pizza in the state but that it's WELL WORTH the drive from wherever you are.

Oyster happy hours - Half price oysters
Sagar T.

Tip: You get half off oysters during the oyster happy hour, which means you get them for $2 each between 5pm-6pm everyday. Not $1. I loved this place, nice little cozy set up on the Main St. It's expensive, no doubt. Their bar is impressive, nice collection. The Oysters were fresh. The menu is very European. I would have loved to try the bread or pizza here, but I didn't have enough time to wait. As this is downtown Gloucester, you will have to find the parking space. I don't think the restaurant has one. The restroom is on the second floor. The staff is polite and friendly. Would love to go back some day!

Clam pizza ("New Haven")

Terrific place! Not just for pizza: their raw bar, entrees, and salads are also all great. Among the very best Gloucester restaurants. I'm a local and have eaten here many times. Love to sit at the oyster bar and watch the crew at work. The clam pizza just rotated back on the menu, and it is fantastic! The Louis Prima (spicy sausage) is another favorite, but they are all excellent, and things come and go, so it never gets boring.

Wood-fired pizza was really good
Amber E.

We were very excited to try this place, since two of the owners met while cooking at one of our favorite restaurants in the country, Chez Panisse, Alice Waters' famous farm-to-table spot in Berkeley, CA, and came recommended by Eater 38. We came in for happy hour, and got an assortment of oysters, which were really good. Some of the entrees were a bit better than others, but overall, a really enjoyable meal, great service, and cool, hip setting.

Oysters

Amazing, always need to come back here when I go home to MA. The fact that this restaurant is both a raw bar and Neapolitan style pizza is really just heaven. Why aren't all restaurants doing this? I always get a marg pizza with a billion oysters, whatever they recommend, and a bottle of whatever their lightest white is. The aesthetic of the restaurant is really cute and simple - a very trendy little place tucked away in downtown Gloucester. Love love love!

Fresh oysters. An Island Creek is already been gone and an Aunt Dolly awaits a slurp! Served with mignonette, cocktail sauce, and lemon.

Reminded me of being back in Umbria, Italy. Great selection of Neapolitan foods, including seafood and flatbread. Will be back.

Oak to Ember - Half Caesar salad

I had dinner with my mom at Oak to Ember a week or so ago when we spent a long weekend on Cape Ann…read more Of all the restaurants we had planned to check out, I was most excited about Oak to Ember! Looking right out onto Gloucester Harbor, the location and the views are incredible. It's also an incredibly cool, modern spot. The interior has high ceilings and cool decor (it used to a fisherman's union hall), and the outside seating couldn't be more beautiful with those Gloucester Harbor views. The restaurant serves fresh New England seafood, dishes made with seasonal and regional produce and meat, and dishes made using their live-fire grill and smoker! No kidding, I wanted everything on this menu. My mom eats vegetarian/mostly vegan, so she ordered two small plates for herself that were veggie-focused. I ordered their smoked monkfish burnt ends (with lemongrass chili crunch and apple & celery root slaw) and their pan seared scallops (with summer mushroom risotto, smoked brisket jam, and sun-dried tomato butter). Both dishes were great. I couldn't eat all of it, but I took the leftover burnt ends home and sliced them up for sandwiches the next two days (made the best sandwiches). The risotto was one of the best I've ever had - absolutely great flavor, but I did wish they'd gotten a little more color/sear on the scallops themselves - but they weren't overcooked, which is the most important part of the cook on a scallop! I really loved my meal. Their wine list was also great, and I had a wonderful glass of Bourgogne Blanc. The service was great - Sabrina was our server, and she was wonderful! This is a popular spot, so you need a reservation if you want to grab dinner here during popular hours. We had a reservation for around 7 on a Saturday night, and a group of two walked in without a reservation and were told they had an opening for walk-ins around 9. We had to wait a bit for our table but otherwise our meal was pretty perfect service-wise. We had a great meal at Oak to Ember. I'd love to return.

This place has all the charm you'd want in a small coastal town in New England. And I went there…read morebecause of the outstanding reviews. But it's been a while since I've been this disappointed in a restaurant. I'm not talking about the parking (it's small) or the decor of the place or even the service. I'm strictly talking about the food. The good thing about the food was that it was hot, and I mean so hot that I was afraid it was going to melt the take-out containers they packed it in. Also, the serving sizes are large, and in the case of the Seafood Marinara pasta dish, they give you two full large plastic containers for a single order. The fish chowder and clam chowder were definitely full of seafood, but they were underseasoned. I guess if you were to eat them concurrently with really salty food, then they'd be perfect. But I ate them before the rest of the meal, and by themselves, the chowders' taste is a bit lacking. But the real shock was the pasta. I ordered the two most expensive pasta dishes on the menu: Seafood Marinara and Shrimp Scampi. The amount of seafood on the plates was admirable, but a lot of it tasted generic. And the pasta definitely tasted like it was pre-made. The killer was the lack of seasoning in both dishes. I can understand if one of the dishes was underseasoned because mistakes happen. But when both pasta dishes were as bland as these two dishes were, well, you have to worry about the standards. Just to be sure, I waited a few hours until the dishes had cooled down, and I tried them again. It's easier for me to taste the seasoning when the food temp is lower at around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Both pasta dishes were pretty much tasteless. I even had a friend of mine who has an excellent palate try everything, and she literally asked me if I specifically ordered the food to be cooked without seasoning. I wouldn't have been so surprised if I had gone into a place that had average reviews, but The Causeway has a great reputation. I guess if I go back, I'll have to try their fried seafood (e.g. the Peters Platter). But the problem is do I really want to go in there and spend about $30 per dish after my experience with their pasta dishes? I hate writing a negative review about a family restaurant, but inflation being what it is, people are going to be choosier about where to spend their money, and restaurants have to make sure that their food is on point to justify the high prices.

It is a beautiful quiet area with very nice people. We then had a Tuna Tartar, a Halibut Ceviche, a fresh Beet & Burrata salad with Citrus dressing, and shared a Swordfish. The Tuna Tartar was served with avocado, and corn with a light touch of jalapeño and blended quite well together. The Halibut Ceviche had a nice citrus flavor with avocado and was also quite good. The Beet & Burrata salad was simple, but so good. Beets, Cara Cara, Fresh Tomatoes, and Pine Nuts with an awesome home made Burrata. We then shared a Swordfish on a carrot puree served with eggplant. This was cooked very well, not overcooked (which ruins Swordfish). The wait staff was super nice and and answered a number of questions I had about the area, and the portion sizes were quite plentiful. We would definitely go back when we are in the area.

It's located right on Lobster Cove on the Annisquam River, with beautiful views. We were seated outside, and it was so peaceful out there - the perfect place for a meal! We had an early reservation on a Sunday night (I'd have taken something later, but Talise is very popular, and I took what I could get) and were seated at a beautiful table outside right away. The menu is really incredible - seasonal, fresh, inspired by the restaurant's surroundings. My mom eats mostly vegan, and they were extremely accommodating and made her a pasta dish that wasn't on the menu. I had their sourdough bread with butter, sourdough soy, and sel gris (my mom shared it with me without the butter - more for me!); two of their raw oysters from New Brunswick with a sparkling rose mignonette; two of their dressed oysters with plumcots, prosecco mignonette, and smoked trout roe; and their bucatini with Cape clams, Calabrian chile, onion cream, bacon, pounded basil, bread crumbs, and 2-year Parmigiano Reggiano. Everything was very good, but I wish the sauce on the pasta had been thickened a bit so it would stick to the pasta; the sauce was delicious, but was as thin as broth and that made it hard to enjoy. My mom and I also shared their apple crunch (with almonds, vanilla gelato, and caramel), with the gelato on the side, which was a great ending to the meal. With a glass of orange wine to boot, I really enjoyed the meal overall. The meal was mostly lovely - it'd be hard not enjoy a meal this tasty in such a beautiful location - but I found the service a little cold, almost to the point that I wondered if I had annoyed or offended our server somehow. The less friendly service was only a slight damper on what was a very nice meal. I'd be happy to return - it's a gorgeous spot with a great seasonal and regional approach to its cuisine.
