I was the medic on-call, so I put my iPhone on vibrate and went a-wandering in downtown Gloucester. Turning the corner, a crowd was gathering and the sound of laughter rolled up the street. A new restaurant opening! What luck. Matt (co-owner,1) was standing at the door with a smiling hostess. "it's our Opening Night! No reservations, come join us." How could I refuse? He seated me at the half finished oyster bar then offered a slip of paper with at least 10 different fresh-shucked aphrodisiac offerings of the day. Oysters, he exclaimed. When I showed little interest, he said, we have pizza, too! Gourmet pizza, gourmet oysters, raw seafood, high quality beers, lovingly prepared salads, fresh, local, handmade food by four foodies on a mission. Matt, worked the door. Howie, the California transplant, (co-owner, 2) worked the room like a politician. Nico and Amelia, partners in life and business worked the kitchen (co-owners, 3&4). Nico moved like a surgeon from the wood-burning oven to the prep table, intensely, precisely adding ingredients before they were taken away by nubile wait-staff. I ordered the freshly sliced scallops in lieu of oysters, which other patrons were joyfully consuming with mass quantities of beer. The scallops were lovingly dispatched and sliced before my eyes. Their life-force was quickly folded into an olive oil citrus marinade prepared by Amelia. What a mouth-melting delight! She cracked a smile as my eyes rolled in my head. I'd never attended a restaurant opening before, so I spent more time taking it in than eating. I'm no critic, but I do have a chronic see-food eating disorder. I was surprised and satisfied, that's enough for me. The joyful atmosphere and the sense of adventure was the real satisfaction of the evening. Whenever four individuals can come together pledging their efforts, risking their treasure in a joyful, healthful enterprise, the sheer nobility of it earns my admiration and support. This was on our list of places to eat this Summer so we decided to visit on a Friday. We waited about 10 minutes at the door and the waiter just seemed overwhelmed and confused about where to seat us. There was a table for 4 available, but since it was just the 2 of us I suggested we sit at the bar and he responded with a deer in the headlights look. Aside from that, the bartender was great and drinks were served quickly. We started off with a plate of oysters, which were great and then ordered a pizza. I was surprised that the pizza was paper thin which had to be folded back in order to eat it. The sauce was sweet and the crust was thick, but overall I was disappointed. It is worth noting that several couples came in and took one look at the menu and decided this place wasn't for them. I have to agree because it is an extremely limited selection. Drinks and food came to $60 and we then walked over to the shop next door and had expresso and dessert, which was actually more filling than the food here. Sometimes you find a place that just isn't meant for you and this is one of those places. read more

Giving 4 stars because I only came here for apps and drinks so I can't fully assess but I loved it. Brought my boyfriend here for dollar oysters 5-6pm, and we also got the meatball appetizer. Best Oysters I had in a while... even better when they are during happy hour when Oysters are a buck a piece for the first hour and last hour of service. The menu is short... as in can write it on the back of a napkin short. If you do one thing, do it right... so says Gordon Ramsey. Olives with preserved lemons is a great dish for olive lovers. Clayton was a great bartender... good attention and personality. I prefer to sit at the bar as I have had so so service at tables before. The pizza is good but ask for it well done so it is not soggy if you like a crispy crust. This is my go to place for date night in town... not sure how they are so fast or consistent with Oysters. .. but I would drive an hour for these. Expect a wait to get seated during the summer, but it is a good sign to wait as the place is solid. read more

Lovely combination of oyster bar and wood fired pizza. Like that they do locally sourced food and have a friendly staff. Great greens from the Apple Street Farm and Alprilla Farm, both in Essex. Salads were well presented, all greens fresh and lively and lightly dressed so it didn't over power the taste of the vegetables. We shared a wood fired pizza with anchovies, tuna, capers, tomatoes, and red onion. Super salty but U loved it. The young staff was very attentive, relaxed, informed, and efficient. I do wish there was more choice on the menu or gluten free offerings....guess oysters would count....There was also an excellent jazz quartet with sultry saxophone on a Tuesday night, so an unexpected treat. read more

I love Short and Main. I love the fact that Short and Main has dollar oyster nights in the first and last hour of service every day. Their pizzas are out of this world! My favorite is the Margherita pizza, mostly because I don't like to go too extravagant, I like simple things. This pizza comes out piping hot, and delicious. Food - menu always changes but a few staples, like the meatballs, are a don't miss. Last night we ordered the Heirloom Tomatoes with mozzarella and eggplant, it was summer on a plate. Atmosphere - one of the few places we enjoy with a crew or just the two of us. Bar or raw bar seats are fun. Even when the restaurant is packed it is not loud. Service - really good too! This is place is fantastic. My wife and I had a great experience sitting at the raw bar and started with oysters. They were amazingly fresh and so good. Next we went for a wedge salad and the meatballs. We ended up ordering the fresh baked bread so we could eat every last drop of the sauce that the meatballs were served in. Meatballs were to die for too. We finished it off with a pomodoro pizza. Again, sooo good. Great cocktails, and such friendly service accompanied the great dinner. We went there on their pop-up night, Sundays from 6 to 8, when they take the Market thing (the seasonal place. In Annisquam) and replicate it upstairs in a mellow, cool space in downtown Gloucester. Same great service, friendly, knowledgeable. Our night was 4 courses (all fish - sort of a post holiday feast of 7 fishes) plus dessert. Everything was tasty, and the pacing was, as usual, perfect. Sardine on toast, tuna crude, skate cheek, and a zupa di pesce with monkfish, clams and mussels. All for 50 bucks! They're off for January but will be returning to this in. February. read more

We stopped by without reservation, but able to seat right away around 6 pm on Saturday. Pizza was good and I did not expect we can find a decent Italian style pizza in the area. The flavor of tomato sauce used in margarita pizza was just like perfectly ripen tomato and wonderful. Waiting staff was pleasant and pizza came in less than 10 minutes wait. I rated four stars because I did not drink or tried other appetizers and flavor of pizza dough was not quite what I expected from this type of pizza. Not quite airy or bite from good gluten structure/type of yeast, maybe? Also charred completely black on all rounds and most of bottom. Perhaps the chef had hard time taming the oven on the very hot day. read more

If there's nothing that tempts you one night, you'll find something that will the next. And you can't go wrong with their many varieties of pizza. (Louis Prima for me.) Outside of the oysters and crudo I give this place a yuk!!!! It came highly recommended. They don't take reservations, so I guess I can't complain about driving 45 minutes to be told there's two empty tables with more getting up to find a wait of twenty minutes. My bad! The oysters were good although all but the pemaquids were massachusetts oysters. The crudo was nice but small. The meatballs however were on a hot steaming plate but the meat itself was still cold and a bit dry. The bread (that you pay for) was pizza dough and came pre doused in olive oil. The squash on the squash pizza wasn't cooked enough to eat, but was so charred in the bottom you couldn't taste anything else. And the only main course on. The menu had sold out by the time we got seated, so it wasn't like we had a choice. On Saturday night? For what it was it was also a bit on the pricey side....And the waitress, while professional and cordial, had NO sense of humor. Gross, no fun, and hard to find parking. I have never seen my 7 year old eat anything with such relish! Pizza and beet salad were great. Salad was a balanced combo of citrus (fresh segments and in dressing), beets, watermelon radish and avocado. Citrus/avocado combo was killer. Had oysters and a cocktail for the very short wait for my food and both were great. Cocktail (sorry, forget the name) was a nice Negroni/Paper Plane riff. $1 Oysters the first hour they are open. Wood fired pizza. Unique salads (who knew tomato, lobster, and avocado go so well together!). Large beer and cider list. Though it does not have the Cape Ann view of boats and ocean that many restaurants in Gloucester do, it is a great hidden gem in Gloucester for a special dinner. I grew up in Gloucester and have seen a lot of restaurants come and go. As an island, Gloucester is kinda notorious for spinning the same dishes from place to place with little variation (re: Italian food is king) Occasionally something new and thrilling pops up, but very often the more exotic flavors only last a few seasons before they're gone as well. I was so delighted when I heard that this new raw bar was opening up on downtown Main st. Usually one has to venture over the bridge for good oysters and killer craft beer so the idea of this gem popping up so close to home (and just in time for summer!) had my hopes pretty high. We took my mother out for Mother's day and decided to take a chance on the new place (ok, kinda self-serving on my part but we were all excited to go.) Short & Main which has taken over the old Valentino's spot turned out to be a thoughtful renovation of the old space. They've really cleaned it up and brought a new life to the crooked bricks of the former pizza parlor. The ceilings were tastefully done with pretty lighting, the seating vastly opened up, the wait-staff professional and friendly, and they even have one of those open kitchens where you can sit at the bar and watch the cooks work. It was the weirdest thing, like I went through a door on Main st. Gloucester and on the other side was some established Cambridge gourmet scene that I had somehow forgotten about. I loved seeing this type of food-culture come to the island! The pizzas were a fresh spin on the Toscana thin-crust re: a few simple ingredients done exceedingly well to make you greedily reach for the fourth slice (I hope no one is counting...) We got the Margherita (sauce was to-die-for) and the potato-leek pizza (it had an egg on it! SO good!) Now what I came for: The oysters were cleanly done, plenty of good brine for slurping, not a loose shell or stuck foot to be found. They offered a garlic vinegar dressing and a simple zesty tomato something-or-other which went very well with a smidge of lemon juice. For mom we got a lobster salad (I think it had fennel and some kind of cabbage, definitely recommend it) and the raw sea scallop (I'm not brave enough for that one but it was very prettily done in shell with citrus shavings) Beer and wine list looked lovely, I appreciated that my waitress was knowledgable enough to recommend something to pair with our raw bar selections, and they even had some really intriguing cocktail line-ups with Campari which I don't often find around here. I think the thing I enjoyed most about this find was that it was incredibly casual. The food was better quality than the outfit I planned and I felt right at home. Good spot for a date, a simple drink and a laugh, or a full-scale dinner with family. Seriously, if these are your flavors then this place serves to please one and all. Check it out! read more

Look out North End, Gloucester's got a new restaurant and not only will I not need to drive to Boston for a grand dinner out, but I suspect the Boston crowd will soon be coming here. In age where all higher end restaurants tend to look the same, Short and Main has created something totally new that equally serves the objectives of either an elegant evening out or a wonderful place to gather with friends. Their staunch insistence to serve only fresh food, makes for exquisite flavors, blended in ways that I have only experienced in Ital. Locavores and even Carlo Petrini himself would find nothing to complain about. Paired with wood fired pizzas, made of fresh ingredients, Short and Main offers a short but incredibly thoughtful wine list which, like the ingredients of their food, is fresh, and changes form day to day. If this were not enough, in much the same way that at a sushi bar you can fill out slips of paper for which roll you want, at Short and Main the same is possible for their raw bar selection. Wonderful to be able to experience the different nuances of fresh oysters and more from micro grower throughout New England. We tried our first raw scallop and we will certainly be back for many more. Nice too, with all the negative environmental consequences of sushi, that Short and Main, by offering locally micro farm raised shellfish, offers fresh seafood lovers a more sustainable and environmental alternative to sushi. Finally no review could be complete without a standing ovation for the servers. The first night we went to Short and Main was opening night, the place was packed and yet, within minutes we were seated and six minutes after that we all had drinks and the first courses served! Swiss watches should be so aware of timing. We've been back and each time we plan when we will return.
