After ordering a $112.00 take-out order that we picked up, we were missing some items. When I called, the person who answered was very unprofessional and rude. The food, frankly, isn't that great anyhow!!! I am working late here at the Capitol and can not go out to get common staples such as soy sauce and chop sticks to eat my food with. Sashimi decent but sushi indifferent, 'salad' basically shredded iceberg lettuce and pad thai profoundly tasteless and dry (chicken, same per Yolo D's review). I expected a fair bit more flavor, or style, for $15. Stick with the sashimi and you'll be in good hands but don't expect much else. read more

When I heard Shogun was expanding their business to Albany, I decided to set up a Shogun Adventure. Three of my friends and one of their boyfriends decides to venture with me and see what the hype was about. The Shogun of Delmar had a lot of positive reviews, and I saw at first hand why. Their service at the front desk is rather lacking, but the service between the bar and wait staff covers the front desk's errors. The bartender was a trip, she knew her product well. She knew about unfiltered sake, plum wine, and how to make a Scorpion. You girl, are a reason I let the front desk's error slide!!! Our waitress was Tracy, and again... someone who knew their product! She even told us she made some of the sauces! She took ownership and that's important in any business. She was able to work on the fly, I wanted a drink but wanted to be surprised. She did that! She broke me a saketini, fuji apple flavored.... delicious! The decor was pleasant, it wasn't over the top. Simple. To the point. Now the main part of any review on a restaurant, the food. The food was great! I went with Mad tai appetizer, which was the special of the day. Very good I have to add!! Slices of fish topped with a sauce and jalapeno slice. Also had a Fuji Volcano roll, one of their specialty rolls. Very very good. For entree I went with the kitsune udon noodle soup, a soup in which I've been dying to try ever since my fall into Japanese culture. Delicious. It was sweet, savory, spicy, and just good. For dessert I went with green tea cheesecake, one word: Divine. You have to go. I would eat there every time I craved sushi, but the half hour trip deters me from such. We come here often for lunch and the service is great as well as the food! For those that have to avoid gluten, they have a menu that lists everything you can eat and are diligent to make sure you can eat what you order! When I was living in Albany, I came here all of the time. This was one of my favorite restaurants for its upscale selection of sushi and Chinese food along with its sake bombs. This is a great place for a night out with friends or on a date. Very intimate atmosphere along with being very friendly casual. The dessert here too is no joke, I've had the fried ice cream multiple times and it so good that I had to even order it when I was full. The sushi sometimes is a little expensive, but completely worth it if you get a custom roll. They also have Sushi boats which are awesome! Not sure if I'll ever be back in Albany, but if I do come back I'll stop in at Shogun. read more

I ate here this past weekend on the way to Saratoga Springs from NYC. I tried the Delmar roll, the Lobster tempura roll, and the Yaki Udon with shrimp. Being new to the area, and mildly spoiled from Manhattan sushi, I didn't come with any expectations. I was happily surprised to taste how good the food was. The Delmar was my favorite with a light and fresh combo of salmon, eel, and avocado. The Yaki Udon was a great dish to with a generous amount of shrimp and noodles. The only slight downer is that I think I would prefer the lobster tempura without cream cheese (really, my bad for ordering it). I have been in Albany for 6 years and have eaten at a large amount of sushi restaurants in the area. This may be my favorite for a number of reasons. First, and foremost, the food is excellent. The miso soup isn't over bearing; the tempura appetizer is delicious and well worth the cost; and the rolls are delicious. My favorite is the Christmas roll. The presentation is lovely but it is one of the best taste combinations I've had. Other rolls are equally delicious, but I have a soft sport for the Christmas roll. Second, they have a lovely selection of saki. I definitely would recommend the flight and taste three. If you are unsure about saki, the servers, as far as I've seen, are well versed and know what to recommend. While that seems like common sense, there are plenty of places where serves don't know what to recommend. Third, the owner is a very nice man. He is warm, welcoming, and genuine. Very hands on but not in an overbearing way. My only issue is that they have a 3 mile radius delivery and I fall just outside of it. I would order more if I could get their delivery. read more

Hosted an event here for a group of 15 and was really happy with the service. They provided lots of options and even the non-sushi eating people left satisfied. Prices were very reasonable! Why didn't I try this place sooner??? It's a beautiful space, great attentive staff & really fast service. We went Sat at about 8:15pm. We sat at the sushi bar. In about 2-3mins our server Paul came to greet us. We ordered the Saki sampler, 3 flavors of Saki Peach, Lychee & apple, $10, great choice we enjoyed them very much. For starters I order the Tic Tack Toe sushi roll & she ordered the Sweet Potato Tempura both were very fresh & really good. We shared the Spicy Rock Shrimp which was good, just not as spicy as I expected. For our main course We had been wanting to try Udon noodles so we both had the Yaki Udon mine with chicken hers with vegetables. We have found a new favorite noodle dish! It's extremely tasty & love the thick wheat noodles & the gravy they were coated with was delectable. We couldn't get enough of this dish!! I liked their sushi so much ordered the Avocado Boat (one of the specials that night) to go, that too was fresh & excellent!!! Everything we ordered was FANTASTIC!!! This is a very pleasant little Japanese restaurant in downtown Albany. I came here with a friend who lives in the area. We were pressed for time since we arrived around 5:45 with plans to see a 6:30 movie. Service was friendly and quick, so we were able to enjoy our meal and get to the theater with plenty of time! The menu has a lot of options, but not so many that it makes me suspicious. (I am very skeptical of things like "Japanese" restaurants with General Tso's Chicken on the menu and things of that ilk ...). My friend got 2 spicy sushi rolls. Apparently this is a regular thing for her and she did not even need to look at the menu! I was really hungry but wanted something healthy. I got hibachi salmon, which was delicious and came with a generous portion of veggies and brown rice and a choice of miso soup or salad (I got the soup because it was *freezing* outside!) The entree came with 2 salmon filets, so I had plenty of food for my dinner and for lunch the next day. They have a parking lot in the back, which is very convenient. So incredibly surprised ok the best way possible with this place!!! Atmosphere was wonderful one of those places you look at Your significant other and you do nod of approval! Our waitress was very attentive and welcoming. We started off with the cold house sake which was unfiltered , which we prefer anyways, It was as very good! Husband was in the mood for noodles so he got the pad Thai and I got sushi. He asked for his to be spicy the flavor was amazing like some of the best I've had he didn't think it was hot enough but I thought it was the perfect kick . I got the standard rainbow which you can never go wrong with and the pink panther spicy tuna with peanut something I've always been hesitate towards but glad I tried it I really did like it and would totally recommend it! Over all great spot we will be back!!!! Maybe tomorrow? :) So good read more

We came here after a show at the Times Union Center strictly on Yelp Reviews. We were headed to another Japanese restaurant we knew further up Western Ave, but as we drove by it looked so cute, we changed our plans (we had already reviewed Yelp and were aware of it) but were heading for the familiar. We were not disappointed. Very friendly service, cute modern decor with warm lighting. Lots of menu choices. Sushi was fresh and well presented. I live less than 2 blocks away, and am a huge sushi addict so I'm always ordering and dining in here. I've probably had food from here over 30 times. Their sushi is top notch, always fresh, tasty, and consistent. The specialty rolls are delicious, and they have great lunch specials. The appetizers, especially the su mai, is fantastic as well. If you have room for dessert, the fried ice cream is great too! The ambience is nice, there's never a big crowd. Great date night spot. I had lunch at shogun and had Kani salad, the Fugi volcano roll, and sake. My lunch was excellent! My friend ordered the Veggie Lovers sushi lunch special and it was very underwhelming and disappointing as it was just one veggie, rice, and soy paper in a roll. The salad it came with looked like bagged salad with dressing poured on top. The service was poor. The restaurant was mostly empty but we had to keep getting the servers attention and the server seemed as though she couldn't wait to leave. read more

Holy moly this place is good!! I am staying at the Hilton and just wanted a yummy, satisfying meal and I'm so happy the front desk gave me Shogun's number. They delivered it so fast!! I have such a love/hate relationship with this restaurant. While the fish is always fresh, they have real Japanese green tea, and even do non-sushi entrées and appetizers very well, there are some definite issues. First of all, their sushi piece size and maki fish filling are not always consistent from one visit to the next. For example, depending on the night, two pieces of tuna sushi, which will cost you $6 could be nearly half the volume of tuna and rice that you would get in a tuna roll, which also costs $6. Sometimes they really skimp on the maki rice. (Again consistency). Sushi lovers beware: Shogun is definitely not a "bang for your buck" kind of place. The fish is always very good, so if that's your thing, come ready to spend $$$$ (or fill up on tea and soup). read more

Great service. I ordered tempura, a house salad with ginger sauce, and miso soup. Miso was delicious - some of the best I've had. The salad was too heavy on the dressing. Tempura breaking was unseasoned, so I probably won't order that again. I admit that I did go in 30 minutes prior to closing, so maybe that had an affected my food. I have been to shogun a couple of times and the service has been consistently great and so quick! I only get their sushi and a few apps but everything has been super fresh and extremely delicious, it's good quality sushi for this area. They are also speedy with deliveries and the food is still fresh. The prices extremely fair for the quality, it's only a dollar or two more per roll than some lower quality, cheaper sushi places around. Highly recommend! read more

Couple of things that didn't jive with me about this place. I ordered curry, and it was made with flour, didn't really care for that. I ordered a tempura scallop roll, it wasn't done properly, and that was it for me. The staff are friendly and gave me a discount when I mentioned the tempura. Came for lunch, not busy, two at the bar, one at the sushi bar, and myself with a dining companion. Order two miso soup, edamame, and a dragon roll. Soup comes right out and is promptly served with the waiters hands carrying the bowls from the top with his fingers all over the rim, gross... then comes the edamame, at that time we ask for some green tea. Never comes... ever. Out comes the sushi roll. Both of our waters are empty. Doesn't offer to refill. Doesn't come to check on us. I wave him down to ask for the check and leave. I will not be back. Food wasn't terrible but the service was repulsive and essentially nonexistent. read more

Had dinner with a group of eight at Shogun; was very pleasantly surprised! I had eaten at the Delmar Shogun a few years ago and found it disappointing, so my expectations were lukewarm, at best. However, our dinner at the Madison Ave. Shogun was delicious! We started with an appetizer special of scallion pancakes, which were fabulous. I would have had them as an entree if they came that way. I hope that Shogun will consider making them a permanent menu item. We all loved them and ended up getting extra orders because the plates were emptying fast. As a group of eight, most people had sushi. I am not a sushi fan, so I had Pad Thai and my husband had Japanese sauteed noodles. The dishes were delicious and the presentation was lovely. As well, the service was wonderful. The staff was attentive; they refilled drinks, checked on us without being intrusive and were very accommodating. I would say that if you are going on a Saturday night, you might want to make a reservation to be on the safe side, but it wasn't crowded. Definitely doing a good business, but there were empty tables. Recommend! read more

I usually go to Hana on the other side of town but was staying nearby and decided to give Shogun a try instead. Has parking behind the restaurant which is always a big plus, the place is nicely decorated and the service was excellent. The food was not up to par with the rest of the place. Ordered an app from the kitchen which was very good, and then ordered a sashimi entree. Several of the fish smelled very fishy; I realize this sounds rather nonsensical, but fresh fish should not smell fishy. The tuna smelled and tasted mildly of ammonia, which I take is not a good sign by any measure. None of the food caused me to get sick, which was a good sign. Perhaps the best way to get the most enjoyable experience would be to order special rolls which have other ingredients to help mask the less than fresh fish. Love their chicken tempura roll. When we moved I was desperate to find a place that could properly replicate my favorite order from my old neighborhood standby, and Shogun came to the rescue. I'm looking forward to dining-in again when the pandemic has released us all from its steely, terrible grip. It has a nice, classic sushi restaurant atmosphere and frankly, I regret not dining in more often in "the before times" -- it's just that their take out is so timely and competent, it was irresistible. They have a menu full of classics and also some creative new rolls, and I always enjoy ordering a different one alongside old favorites. Also I appreciate that this business has an altruistic spirit, as I have seen the work they do with the South End Children's Cafe.
