Secret weapon

This was a great restaurant. The specialty rolls were so creative, and I really enjoyed the boddy and soul. The Yuba salad was vet interesting, not something I would usually find elsewhere but it works. The tofu was pretty good as well. The price isn't too unreasonable for a relatively fancy place either. Service was all right, nothing outstanding. Felt a bit weird that the kitchen was closing before even 7 so we had to order quickly. The outside is very interesting, it doesn't feel like a restaurant, more like an apartment, but the decorations on the front were nice, and the shape of the room is very unique. I enjoyed it, but not sure I need to come again.

I would give it 4.5 stars. I loved the options they offered at the restaurant being a vegetarian. We ordered colonel pipe, body and soul, secret weapon, open invitation and avocado rolls. All good and would recommend colonel pipe and body and soul. Cozy place and parking on street was available on a Friday evening. I wish connecting with them and booking a reservation was easier. Overall good place, and would try again! We ordered pineapple Drink but was very sugary and was not great!

Boddy and Soul Specialty Roll 10/10 Shio Ramen 8/10 Gyoza 10/10 Dessert 10/10 I love the boddy and soul specialty roll! I recommend it to anyone trying this place the first time. Service is great and welcoming. Interior is very bright and well designed. I'm excited to try other items when I come back.

My bestie took me here for dinner after we'd been saying for years since undergrad that we wanted to come here. Can't believe it took us so long to check off the list but better later than never. She got us a resy for 8pm, but we arrived about 15 minutes early and were seated promptly. We ordered the karaage tempura soy protein and a couple of rolls, the foxy scarlet and boddy and soul. Out of everything, I liked the boddy and soul roll the best. It was the most flavorful and creative out of the items we ordered. However, the karaage was also super creative, and the sweet potato in the foxxy scarlet was unique. Overall good food and service with the only minor inconvenience being that the music was a tad too loud for comfortable conversations.

MUST TRY when in SF! Especially for vegans. This place had been on my list for years and I was finally able to book a reservation a week in advance, which I highly recommend. When we got there, a few tables were full. Once we were seated, no tables were empty! This is a very popular spot. Our servers were amazing. They were knowledgeable on allergies and brought allergen friendly menus to our party upon request. We ordered miso soup, edamame, and about half of the specialty rolls. Every single bite was delicious. The portions were perfect for sharing. Our party of four felt satisfied after eating and truly enjoyed our experience. There were two vegans and two non-vegans in our party and every single one of us left happy. The non-vegans were surprised at how tasty each dish was and they are looking forward to bringing their non-vegan friends to try it. The restaurant is clean and gorgeous. They made do with the space and there is just enough room for the servers to get by and deliver the goods. Overall, it will make your trip to the city absolutely divine! :D

We had heard about this place a lot from friends, we wanted to try it for a while. We were able to get a reservation for a weekend dinner a week in advance. We highly recommend planning ahead for this one. The reservation for 4 was for 90 minutes. The place is small, cozy and has cute decor. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. We ordered drinks to start off - lemonade, a pineapple drink, mango juice and sake. For starters we got shishito peppers and panko-crusted bean curds. Drinks were good, peppers were average, bean curds were good. For mains we ordered 4 specialty rolls - body and soul, open invitation, secret weapon and missing piece - and the okra nigiri. All specialty rolls were very tasty and very well made. You can't go wrong with any of them! I'd skip the nigiri so you have more appetite for the specialties The wait staff was very helpful and patient and explained all the dishes to us when we said it was our first time visiting. The food is brought out very fast izakaya style. I'd definitely recommend this place and will be visiting again myself!

Gyoza
Christine W.

Came to try out this place with a couple friends! One of my friends has been here a few times and recommends it! We got gyoza and three of the specialty rolls to share! All were very delicious and I love that everything here is vegetarian/vegan. The service was very good as well and I loved the ambiance! The servers came to check up on us often. The restaurant itself does have limited seating, but they also take reservations through Yelp! Overall, definitely a fun and fresh dining experience, and I'd come again to try new dishes!!

I love this place! Everything is vegan and very high quality. The food also looks beautiful. They are busy, but the service is great! My favorites were the ceviche and colonel's pipe.

Food: we visited 2nd time since 2022! The quality of the sushi is still the same. Each preparation is unique! The description of each item is accurate. Service: super friendly and courteous Ambience: while Shizen by itself is a pleasure the business can't really help change everything around them. Parking becomes difficult due to the filth in the neighborhood. Although the "friendly folks" don't bother you while you park or leave. It smells repulsive and the neighboring street is filled with trash. Very unfortunate for such a great restaurant to be situated in this surrounding!

Absolutely loved the sushis here. However, wasn't a big fan of their ramen. Must visit for the sushis, like "the BEST sushis"

The perfect evening! Reservations through the Yelp app for dinner at 6:15 pm. Free Sunday parking right across the street. Christy the amazing Manager and hostess welcoming us so warmly and seating us 18 minutes before our reservation time. Wonderful, attentive and prompt service from our server Alan( extra ginger - twice, the birthday dessert surprise, great suggestions). Beautiful food - lovely mushrooms, best Miso soup ever, surprise ending with the shot of sake in the middle, Brussels sprouts , a smooth Shizen lemonade and wonderful hot tea. The freshly prepared red bean donuts were to die for. Best seats in the house. Shizen the upscale, recent Michelin star recipient was a unique, fun, delicious and memorable experience.

Luckily I got reservations for Valentine's Day! Shizen was absolutely DELICIOUS. I loved everything- the service, the ambiance, the food, drinks. I've been wanting to try this place out for a minute and it did not disappoint. The Boddy and Soul was probably my favorite, but you literally can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I also highlighted the other sushi that we ordered. It was so good and I think I'll definitely be back!

Mango nigiri

Shizen never fails to impress. I've been here multiple times, and it's one of my favorite places to bring friends and family when they're visiting from out of town. What I love most is the variety of options. Whether you're in the mood for nigiri, sushi rolls, or ramen, there's something for everyone. The creativity and attention to detail in each dish make every visit enjoyable. Ratings: * Nigiri: 10/10 * Sushi: 9/10 * Ramen: 8/10 * Service: 9/10 * Ambiance: 9/10 Consistently great food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Shizen remains one of my go-to spots and is always on my list when hosting out-of-town gue

Ask the Community - Shizen

Can we make a reservation for a party of 5?

Yes

Do they have high chairs?

Yes they have high chair seating.

Do they have tables for greater than 4 people? Thinking about going with 6 people total.

Yes, they usually make 6 people table by joining 3 tables.

If I want to eat alone (party of 1) on a Friday night, should I expect a reasonable wait for bar seating or am I better off making a reservation for a table for 1?

I"d much rather sit to a table . For one thing to get a better Service. Actually The host's job is to seat hungry people and to set diners' expectations for how long they'll have to wait for their meal. When a restaurant takes reservations, hosts…

Any of the items in their sushi menu served with cooked vegetables?

Yes - quite a few use cooked vegetables. I would say more are cooked than raw.

Do you guys offer Jain or no-onion no-garlic food?

Am sure they can, I avoid those and never have a problem, they will work with you.

Are there gluten and soy free options? Unfortunately I have issues with both. Please let me know which may be okay as I'd LOVE to come for a meal. Thanks!

There are a LOT of gf options, clearly marked on the menus. I was not looking for soy free, so I didn't notice. Email them. They were super helpful to me via email!

Would they take photos of IDs and Covid Vaccine Cards instead of physical copies for Dine-in?

Yes

Is there a parklet or other outdoor seating?

there was one outdoor table when I went there, but it was on a sidewalk

Do they still do the online waitlist?

No, they are reservation only and offer limited seating times

Do they accept digital covid vaccine records?

Yes. With your license.

Are most menu items nut-free?

Yes! I have a severe peanut and tree nut allergy and their menu had little-to no nuts.

Delivery or work with a delivery app service?

No, they offer pick up or dine in only!

Do they only have white rice? Some places have black rice, brown rice, or quinoa options. My friend's blood sugar spikes from white rice.

I only saw white.

What are the best rolls here going to order for first time?

Hidden Agenda, Boddy and Soul, Secret Weapon (spicy), Proud Peacock. But if any of them are calling your name they are all delicious!

Is the menu completely vegan? I see they hav aoli options and I just want to make sure it does not contain actual mayonnaise.

Yes, the menu is 100% vegan...down to the vegan aoli

Is Shizen open for takeout during shelter-in-place? I could really go for some now...

Unfortunately no.

Is Shizen doing takeout right now or anyone know if there will be eventually?

Sorry, we live in Seattle and have no idea.

Has anyone actually ever reserved a table online? I see stated on the Shizen website that "We offer very limited online reservations and hold the majority of tables for walk ins", but I cannot find even 1 table for 1 person for 2 months in advance.

Yes, you can reserve a table ... so far I was able to make reservation only at 5pm

Do they have gluten free?

yes, they have many gluten free items and can alter other items to make them gluten free as well.

Servers seemed like they had a lot on their hands and were trying to get through the orders and tables. I would say service for a restaurant of this caliber was good, but could be better? Food was great. Huge fan of the black cod (favorite), sashimi, and the minced chicken skewers. For the entree options between the chicken and amberjack katsu I'd go for the chicken. The fish katsu can be really overpowering and heavy but maybe that's just me. The katsu breading is done really well and it made for a great entree. I loved the thought put into each dish and how each dish was crafted with accompaniments like cabbage / cucumbers / hot mustard that really enhanced the main protein. We also tried sake and cocktails - I couldn't tell from their website or Yelp that they have a cocktail menu but they do! I was really happy with my yuzu chu hai, it was so refreshing and went great with the courses as a palate cleanser too.

The corn ribs were very flavorful and perfectly done. The udon was a bit too spicy for my liking but still very creamy. I enjoyed the duck but my friend said it was too fatty. Granted, we came in around 9 PM, about an hour before closing, so we understood that the kitchen was getting toward the end of the night. We ordered a few dishes to share and there were actually some highlights. The scallops: These were great! Easily one of the better dishes we ordered. The karaage chicken: The chicken itself had great flavor, but the creamy sauce on top was extremely rich and ended up overpowering the chicken. I think with less sauce, this could have been a really good dish. Now, the ramen: This is where I was genuinely left speechless. I don't think I've ever had ramen with absolutely no umami. Like, none. It was one of the strangest things I've ever tasted. I was biting into something, there were textures in my mouth, it smelled great... but that was it. No depth. No richness. No umami. The broth, meat, and even the noodles somehow had almost no flavor. The only thing that really came through was the greasy chili oil that lingered on your tongue afterward. After a couple of bites, we looked at each other and decided to leave. At that point, most of the food was still sitting on the table practically untouched. Maybe we caught the kitchen on an off night, especially coming in later in the evening. The scallops showed us that there's definitely potential here, but unfortunately, the ramen was such a miss that it overshadowed the rest of the meal for us.
