I went to Shirley's to get breakfast for the grands. I ordered 2 orders of donut holes and 2 kolaches. I ask the lady if the sausage and cheese was spicy she assured me it was not. I asked what the difference between the bold and regular and was told the cheese. Well the price is also different the regular is 2.79 and the bold was 3.49. Well I'm here to tell you besides the price higher the bold was indeed spicy so it was a waste of money because the girls couldn't eat them. The language bearer might have been the problem but next time be sure what you tell customers because my girls are 1 and 2 and to serve them something spicy is not what I do. I know that donuts are bad for me, and I don't really give a ship. Confession: My favorite Donuts in Texas are Shipley's! Believe it or not! They are absolutely wonderful - but only when they are piping hot and fresh out of the oven. Or is it fryer? I have no idea. Anyway. I called ahead and they said they had fresh hot donuts. They certainly did! They were scaldingly delicious and fluffy and right out of whatever it is they are cooked in. Could not have tasted any fluffier and better and greasier. They are every bit as good as the wonderful location way out on Westheimer that is also open 24 hours a day and also has Hot Donuts around the clock. Granted, we got some strange looks from staff and patrons because of the shoes that my girlfriend was wearing, but overall I could not describe these little treats as anything but utterly fantastic. Parking lot not very lit so a bit spooky coming in but once your at the store front everything changes. The whole front of this Shipley's pretty much lights up 1/4 of the parking area, if not for this I probably would pass. I sat in my car eating my kolache and donut holes which I may add were kind of fresh but not stale and will add that at around 5:00 a.m. you will see a lot of the clientele to be of the Hispanic culture, not saying this is anything bad but just a little demograph. One thing I must add if you order a small orange juice, you will get a micro sized 8 oz which I did not see (too early in the morning to open eyes anyways) instead of the 12 oz bottle that is more visible. Please know that Not all Shipleys are created equally. My daughter LOVES donuts and we were on our way home and she located this 24hr Shipley... the worse experience ever!!! I wanted to try Shipleys while down south and this location had good reviews and was open 24/7, done deal. After 6:30 the inside of the shop is closed, drive thru only. That's all good and well, but there is no menu posted outside and we had never been to a Shipleys before, so had no idea what to order! They have all the standard donuts, so they would probably just have whatever you want to order - but I'm particular and need to know all of my options. So we went to the front of the shop and peered in the window, squinting, then got back in our cars and to the drive thru once more. It was kind of annoying, but the donuts were SO GOOD that it made us forget. The apple fritter was LEGENDARY, the dough was perfectly savory, pulled apart, and the sweet tinge of apple was dead on. Chocolate topped with nuts, solid donut, excellent flavor, good chunks of walnut! Chocolate stuffed with cream was soft and yummy, cream was a good consistency and not cloying, glaze was DREAMY. Blueberry filled and cherry filled - love when jelly donuts are glazed. These were certainly perfection. Even though they stop making fresh ones after 6PM here, at 7PM it was still quite warm. So went here early this morning around 445am. I ordered some sprinkle donuts and this is how they were when I opened the box at the store... I go they all melted, sticky and super hot. Do you have any that aren't completely melted? Her response was well they are fresh.. here are napkins.. don't get me wrong fresh donuts are nice and love them, but this was not the case. No that's not the reason... the reason is because you didn't want to wait the right amount of time to cool them before placing the icing... instead I have I melted all over the bottom of a box and not on the donut. I do not have a sweet tooth and don't eat very many donuts. When I am in the State of Texas and visiting my grandchildren I MUST have a Shipley's donut. I found them to simply be irresistible. I am not a fan of their Kolache. Sadly though I found their coffee to be below the horrible taste level. I did not find the place very clean so I do not sit there with my grandkids.
