Best blueberry cake donut. Ever. After leaving Texas many years ago, I would search for my favorite foods, but once I learned to stop tainting an experience with impossible expectations, I was open to discovering new favorites. So I'll confess, I skipped over Riley's glazed donut, though it's my barometer for judging donut shops, and went straight for the blueberry cake donut thinking they're harder to mess up (and satisfy my persnickety standards). On first bite, mind blowing. Riley's version of this classic donut masters the perfect balance between soft and airy, conjuring yeast donut vibes but with the moisture, coarse crumb texture, and impressively well-executed springiness of a cake donut. The flavor is excellent--almost under sweetened--which lets the blueberry flavor shine and contrast with a classic, simple glaze. The most miraculous part--it was delicious, but non-addictively delicious, so I felt satisfied, not guilty, eating a donut at 2pm. Probably means they're closer to scratch than a statewide chain can produce. Did I mention this donut, which was probably made early AM, kept its aforementioned taste wizardry many hours later?! My only regret--I can only dream of how incredible these blueberry cake donuts would be with a fresh lemon (or lime basil) glaze. read more

I am shocked I haven't reviewed this business because I always visit when I make it out to Houston. This is the type of donut/breakfast shop you dream of having close to your house so you can stop by any time. Mom and pop locally owned where the owner remembers you and always greets you with a smile and just simply makes you feel welcomed. But the most important part, the food. Donuts and kolaches! The kolaches are without a doubt, some of the best I've had because of the ratio of the light, airy bread and whatever filling you choose. I enjoy the jalapeño sausage and cheese, but my go to is easily the boudin (spicy version)! Flavorful and plenty. They do not skimp on portions here. The donuts are also great here. Again, the dough is light and delicious. They just have their recipes down. Just an awesome spot that'll have a forever customer in me. read more

I've given this place the benefit of the doubt but honestly, these are the worst donuts I've ever had. The service has been ok but the last time we went, the owner joked and suggested to my young sons, ages 6 & 8, that he'd take them to Hooters or Twin Peaks for lunch. I don't like cake donuts - to me, they are too dense and leaden, with not much flavor. But I decided to try these. My word, such goodness! First, that wonderful blueberry flavor up front, yum. And, while they ARE cake donuts, somehow this shop has found a way to make them lighter. They truly are delectable. We got a variety, and everything was great. I moved to this area about two years ago. Their donuts and kolache has always been fresh/delicious. everybody is Friendly, polite. I had incident with my tire around 630 AM close to Riley Donuts. I drove my car to their shopping center and parked my car in their parking lot. while waiting for AAA to show up, the owner came out and offered to change the tire so I could be on my way. He is awesome, very caring. I appreciated his help very much. read more

While Shipley's may have introduced kolaches to the masses and Mornings may have the largest variety, they both fail in comparison to the classic jalapeño here at Riley's. There's a perfect balance between sausage, cheese and an airy doughy consistency that brings me here every time I'm back in Houston. We had a bunch of teenagers over so my husband went to get donuts for the morning after the sleepover. He went here because he knows they have maple bars. We've been here for 3 years, relocated from Oregon where we always got maple bars (my favorite). Today, I had my 1st maple bar in Texas! I asked my husband how he knew they had maple bars and he said he's been going here for a year because it's on his way to work and just noticed recently they had them! So now I know where to go if we're going to have donuts because I don't really care for any other kind of donut. Noticed Rileys (sp) sitting quietly next door when we visited Gina's Italian Kitchen last week. This morning, I made a point to stop by. Friendly staff! I felt very welcomed and appreciated here. They have breakfast tacos, biscuit sandwiches, fruit and meat kolaches, standard issue donuts- chocolate covered, filled bars, coconut frosted, sprinkles, cinnamon twists, old fashioned, etc. Can't say their foodstuffs are anything outstanding. The donut holes have an acrid first impression followed by a bitter aftertaste. The apple fritter has a great crispy consistency, but is lacking any real apple or cinnamon flavor. Plain sausage kolaches are decent, but uninspired. These are the standards I always order when trying a new donut place to see if they can hold a candle to Christy's in midtown, and unfortunately Riley's cannot. I don't know why Clear Lake area donut shops all serve the same type of mundane, cheap-tasting sausage in their kolaches. Can a place serve up some halved smoked jalapeno pork sausage, please?! *le sigh* I suppose if I want the Texas standard of kolaches I've got to get my fill out in the Hill Country. Donuts/kolaches are slightly above the average price, but that's how you go mom-and-pop in Clear Lake. If you work around here, check them out and get your morning sugar rush. Don't walk in with ridiculously high standards like I did, and you'll leave happy. I would go back to Riley's if I'm in the area again. read more

I tried to place a phone order for a large order as we we're going on a picnics with family and I needed food fast. I initially wanted Kolaches but all their Kolaches had pork products. So I asked them what the alternatives were. It was going to be a large order. The gentleman on the line seems so flustered and kept telling me I needed to come in to the store to place the order. Then he was very rude and said for a large order we needed at least a days notice. So I asked him what he had available on hand. He just said he was unable to fulfill the order and if I wanted to order I needed to come to the store. I have an infant and toddler and have been not been dining indoors because of the pandemic...so NO I am not going down to your store. Later the man called me saying sorry I didn't take your order because I thought you were a prank caller! They have officially lost my business permanently which is sad because they are close to where I live!! read more

This is my favorite little spot to stop for breakfast on the go! I LOVE their kolaches! They come in two sizes- small & large, but I prefer the small. They are always warm and fresh! Also, their donuts are great too. Their selection is big and they are fresh! They have plenty of drink options, including coffee. There are also tables inside for those who have time to dine-in. And the customer service is A+! The owner always greets customers by name and their staff there is incredibly friendly and helpful! They are ALL incredibly delicious but my favorites are the bacon, egg and cheese croissants and blueberry danishes! The owner and staff are very friendly and are strong community supporters! When I take Riley's into the office, my co-workers RAVE about how tasty everything is! Riley's breakfast is ALWAYS a hit! They also have every beverage option you would want (except maybe alcohol ). Riley's is by far the best donut/kolache place in the Clear Lake area, and it's not even close. I've been coming here over 8 years and the food has always been extremely high quality and consistent. My favorite is the sausage croissant kolache, it is sooo good!! The croissant is very soft and buttery/flaky, and always tastes fresh. My kids love the donuts and kolaches as well. So the food is awesome, but the thing that really sets this place apart is the service. The owner (Mel) is super nice and has an incredible memory. He knows many people by name and can recall their regular order, and always has a really positive demeanor. He really knows how to make customers feel at home and after coming here for so long, I don't understand why anyone would bother going to the chain places like Shipley's and Kolache Factory, because frankly their food is not as good and their service leaves much to be desired as well. read more

Kolaches are really good but the prices are horrible! I refuse to return because it is ridiculous. I went and got 1dozen kolaches and it was $44! On another trip I got 3 kolaches 1 donut and 3 drinks and it was $18. Too many choices in the area to pay prices like this. read more
