I grew up going to the OG Houston Texas location and I guess not all shipleys are made the same because what I was given as a kolache was a total disgrace. I drove 40 mins to get these It was like harden crunchy pizza dough? It was not the soft, pillowy texture kolaches are supposed to be. Tasted nothing like a kolache back home. I was hoping to scratch my kolache itch but I guess not. However the service was terrific, the guy working there was incredibly sweet and provided great customer service. The location was very clean. I've tried a few different varieties of donuts from here over time, and they're decent, though nothing spectacular. Service is usually quick and easy, though on my last visit I noticed that the employee who helped me committed a mistake. He was gloved up but handled my cash and then went to pick my donuts from the rack without changing gloves, so that's not ideal. Maybe he was just surprised that someone actually paid in cash, who knows, but it's still something that should not have happened. Otherwise though, it's a pretty average donut shop. This is a big chain from Texas that only has the one location in Denver, but I don't see them being in any hurry to expand, so I guess it will stay a niche thing for those from Texas. Decided to stop by the drive-thru for a quick donut treat. Their full menu (kinds of donuts) isn't listed so it's a good idea to look at the menu online ahead of time if you are unfamiliar. You could smell the fresh donuts being made from the drive-thru window. Service was super friendly. Even though I only ordered a couple of donuts, plenty of napkins and a small box were provided. I wanted sooooo badly to be surprised. Instead, I am a bit disappointed. Standard cake doughnuts with high-sugar, low flavor. It is clear they are making an effort to be creative but sadly failing to execute on, what could be, ideas. To start, their standard apple fritter has potential to be a standout. Instead, it is King Soopers-level, lacking apples and not getting that East Coast crisp on the edges. The bulls-eye series, I had the cherry, was a perfectly cooked doughnut but the filling in the middle seems to pretend to be marshmallow fluff but instead tastes like very sticky powdered sugar creame. The "cherry" coating resembles less cherry than the late hard shell that DQ used to have for a dipped cone (RIP dipped cherry cone at DQ). The servers are clearly new on this visit and seem lost, with no colleagues to model better service. One block to the north up Parker road is Parlor Doughnuts. Similar pricing, much better quality and 8000% greater execution on creativity. "Just sayin'," there is a better product within a block. Shipley, get your $#!+ together!!!! read more

I drove to Shipley's in a snow storm just to be disappointed. The service was just okay. The doughnuts and kolaches were a huge disappointment. I first had Shipley's in Houston and it was sooo good. I don't know what's done differently between the two states but the Colorado doughnuts were dry and seemed like they were days old. The kolache was a disappointment because it was such an itty bitty sausage inside of all of that bread. The ratio was way off. Oddly, they provide hot sauce but no ketchup. I went for the first time at approximately 8:30am on a weekday and they were out of half or more of their selection. The apple fritter is normally my go-to for a rating, but they didn't have any. I ordered a bear claw instead, which is a solid representation of their raised donut, plus a deeper insight based on the filling. But, alas there was no filling at all. No almond paste, no apple pie type filling, nothing with raisins or cream or cinnamon. Essentially I paid $4 for a raised donut shaped like a bear claw with a faint dusting of cinnamon at each cut. I just happened to be in the area and thought I'd finally give them a try, but I can't say my first experience gives me any desire to give them a second shot. read more

Here's how I rate donut shops: I ask myself two questions. 1. Are these better than a donut I could get at a local grocery store? 2. Is the price of this donut justified? With that being said, I had a hard time rating this one. Their donuts are good, and I appreciate some of their flavor offerings. For example, their blueberry filled, devil's food, and blue raspberry are all intriguing. Personally, I thought the devil's food was great! But going off my rating system for donuts, I can't say these were any better than ones I could grab at a grocery store (& for cheaper). My other half was dying for donuts and after a long work week, why not? I heard about this place and since I get off work at 4:30 it sounded like a go. First off all, the smell is soooooo intoxicating....nothing better than fresh donut smell Boy, was I overwhelmed with the selection. Those Bullseye donuts look crazy good, not sure what those are about but they look quite beautiful. My chocolate with walnuts was delicious. Big pieces of walnuts...yes please. My guy got his favorites, cinnamon roll and chocolate glaze AND he's going to try the Kolache. Shipley Do-Nuts has arrived in Colorado, and we're lucky to have it. I've heard about Shipley from friends who grew up in Texas, and it's great to see it expand to our state. The new location is on the east side of Parker Road in borderline Parker/Centennial/Aurora, near Panda Express and Chick-Fil-A. This location is open from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM, seven days a week. We went to Shipley on a Sunday afternoon around 3:30 PM, and they still had a good selection of donuts left (learn from this, The Donut House in Parker). Sadly, they were out of kolaches, which are their signature savory pastries filled with cheese, jalapeno, and other good stuff. Pro tip: They said that the kolaches usually run out around 1:00 PM every day, so make sure to get there in the morning if you want to get your fix of kolaches. Even though I couldn't get my kolaches, I was more than happy to get a half dozen donuts. Shipley donuts are closer to a Dunkin Donut than they are a VooDoo, but I'd say they're better than both of them (I don't actually think VooDoo donuts are that good). They're soft, but have enough texture to them that they feel more substantial than a Dunkin Donut, and they avoid that borderline staleness that you get with VooDoo donuts. There aren't a lot of gimmicks here donut-wise. You have all the classics - sugar, glazed, frosted, fruit-filled, maple, chocolate, etc. - and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's a great, much needed addition to the Colorado donut scene. The location has plenty of parking, a drive-thru, and a lot of space inside. The restaurant is brand new, so it's obviously clean (for now). We'll be back in the morning to get our kolaches fix soon. Welcome to Colorado, Shipley.
