I live two blocks from here and want to love this place...ummmm not so much. Outside of the storied magical Karaoke nights where unicorns gallop and Hall and Oates plays loudly, this place is a hateful dump. It is run like a social club by people who simply don't wan't your business. I stopped in this evening only to be told they were closed on a Thursday night at 11pm. Sound suspicious? I thought so. I called immediately after on the way home, only to be told they were not closed at all. I guess they just found two normal, sober guys looking for a pint Guinness pretty threatening or unwelcome company. I hope the Shenanigans family wakes up and realizes that a business week is not made only on Saturday, and they could do a great deal more business if they were nicer to people in the neighborhood who have lived here for many years. read more

I came up to Brooklyn on a weekend vacation with my parents. My parents ended in bed on Saturday night incredibly early so I decided to venture out on my own and check out the local bar scene around our b&b. I found this bar on yelp and couldn't resist checking it out. The bar is called shenanigans c'mon. Walking in at first was quite intimidating when it seemed like everyone knew each other, but you can soon mix in with the crowd. That Saturday was karaoke and by the end of my visit to Shenanigans I was singing along to all the songs. The charm of the bar can make you feel like your at your local watering hole at home. I met some pretty awesome people including a guy from Brooklyn whose NY accent was hilarious and quite entertaining. I'm from Philly and will be back up to Brooklyn soon enough with my best friend, I can't wait to take her to this bar! read more

One of the best happy hours I've been privy to...$2.50 drinks, $2.00 beers from 5-7 everyday, or buy one get one free, depends on the bartender...weekdays are best for those wishing to avoid the hipsters...everyone is friendly enough and the bartenders are always on top of your current drink level...downsides? met up with the one and only Claire F. here on Friday night as I was back in my old hood. we decided to convene the Windsor Terrorists. despite it being only us two Yelpers, this was clearly a case of quality versus quantity. small and quiet, this is your basic neighborhood local pub. crowd here was a mix of your Standard Old Bar Men, some locals, and a sprinkling of hipsters. $3.50 pints on a Friday night is always great. so's the lady not getting charged for her drink. $4.50 for a pint on a Tuesday night? I've never been a huge fan of Shenanigans but because it's the closest bar I'll stop by occasionally when I want a cheap drink or don't want to walk to Cortelyou. The most I've paid in the past was $3.50 on a weekend karaoke night so I was kind of shocked to find a pint of Killians is now $4.50 on a weekday. I think a pint of Lionshead is like $4 at Sycamore and it's a much nicer place. read more

Shenanigan's is about as random as it gets. Cheap. Mixed crowd. Fosters on tap. Monday thru Thursday, John the barkeep is your friend. The crowd is sparse after 8 & before then generally has some serious drinkers, sometimes depressingly serious drinkers. Most likely you'll have the run of the place & the jukebox until midnight though if you want. The weekend it livens up. It's a hodgepodge of people looking to grab some beers & hang with their friends. Eastern europeans, hipsters, working class mustache men, etc. Karaoke is awesome on Saturday & the music is as random as the clientele. The porch is nice in the summer & I've never had a problem getting a seat. This is not the bar for everyone. To get here, you have to want to get here. But once you've found it, you know where home is. read more

I haven't made it for karaoke night yet, but this is a great neighborhood bar and I went there with some folks from the neighborhood. Very Irish, and with a very basic booze and beer selection (no good rums, but if the owners are reading this, get some Mount Gay or Appleton Estate) and a heavily stacked digital jukebox. It may be a little dive bar in Brooklyn, but the bartender was very personable and charismatic, it wasn't too crowded, and patrons have the option to choose their own music from the jukebox. The drinks were good too, they don't skimp on the alcohol. read more

Ahhh Shenanigans. I moved to Kensington last year, and whenever I want to go out, but not you know, out out; I head over here. John the bartender is a pretty great guy and friendly. We usually go there with our friends who live in Flatbush, and take over the back patio when it's nice out. We've also brought our friend's dog with us as well. I've been going to Shenanigans for 6 years when I moved in the neighborhood. I always go on karaoke night and Eddie always let me and my late gf Carla sing a bunch. I stopped in last year but I lost my voice due to a stroke and can no longer sing and in March my gf died. When I stopped in last year I just listened to people sing which is fun too, the bartenders treated me like family. Just moved here a few months ago and love this place. Good bar to catch a game, or if I wanna hangout in there outdoor garden and have a beer. It never to packed except for karaoke. Its a cool and friendly decor, a place where everyone is chill, no problems. Cheap drinks they don't over charge like most Brooklyn bars and nice friendly bartenders. Despite it's small size, despite it's out-of-the-way location, despite it's musty furnishings...this is surprisingly one of the better bars in Brooklyn. It is, in my opinion anyway. Why? The principle of 'less is more'. This is where you come for a reliable drink with a pal. It's never loud; it's not a pick-up joint. You don't come here to impress anyone, nor do you come here to be impressed by anyone. Wear your most comfortable, faded clothes, raggedy coat, messy hair, and dirty sneakers. No one minds. It's totally down-at-heels and that's what makes it refreshing. Shenanigan's doesn't get all crazy and trendy or wild. Sure, 5-10 blocks away are more 'showy', more sprawling, 'popular choice' dive bars like Freddy's. More fast-paced, more filled with dizzy kids. They're located on prime Park Slope avenues with lots of foot-traffic and they get big reputations. Place to party it up, blah blah blah. But guess what? They're nowhere near as homey, as comforting, or as relaxed as Shenanigan's. Shenanigan's has just one room to drink in; no tables, old wood, greenish walls. Only a couple draught taps. Everything is pretty quiet, mellow, subdued. But you wind up having better conversations. The drinkers here are family men, sisters, wives, dating couples and everyone is local and lives nearby. It's a beautiful thing. REAL people; people with REAL lives; folks with experience and wisdom and heart. Everyone sorta knows each other. It's un-showy, unpretentious, un-self-conscious. Weekend nights are karaoke-oriented (at least friday night is) and the crowd gets a little younger; a little more cleavage is visible; but not much. But its still trustworthy and reliable. Classic rock karaoke. Summer nights there is a back patio with lawn furniture and big leafy sycamore trees overhead; totally sweet and easygoing and even a little romantic. On gloomy Winter nights, Shenanigans is the perfect bar to stumble into for warmth and spirits. No one bothers you; no one 'gets in your face', no one has aggro; no one gets annoyed. It's just one of those bars where everyone is on the same page and the management always knows the right thing to do. No fuss, no muss; no surprises or shocks. It's a fine thing. read more

I am writing this a few days after enjoying some lovely Saturday night karaoke at Shenanigan's. A lively diverse mixed crowd of mostly neighborhood people who sing well and clearly enjoy free karaoke. Eddie Mac is a delight - no song request slips to fill out - just ask him to look up your song on his Mac. Drinks are cheap and ordinary (as in stick to shots or beer) and the place doesn't get too crowded or too loud. The nice/surly bartender ratio is 1:1, so hope you get the nice bartender. The karaoke gets started at around 10:15-10:30 pm every Saturday and gets going right away. By 11:30 you'll have to wait a while to get your turn at the mike. The place fills up by midnight. The rest of the week the bar is astoundingly brightly lit and almost completely empty, there's always an open seat at the bar. read more

My friends and I journeyed all the way to Kensington to go to this local neighborhood bar for Saturday Kareoke. It was a fun mix of locals and hipsters, and not too crowded so we got plenty of turns on the mike. Drinks were very cheap too! A fun time if you are out in Brooklyn. read more

This place is a hidden gem in the wilds of Outer Brooklyn. Old-school Irish neighborhood bar - the kind of dive that all the faux-dives in Williamsburg wish they were. Cheap drinks, darts, great songs on the juke, and a spacious backyard area. Crowd's a mix of locals and hipsters. Joe the bartender would qualify as a force of nature, if nature had a force involving having a great time at a bar.
