After hanging out here for less than an hour, the woman bartender singled out my friend and I and told us we needed to leave because we weren't buying drinks, although we had already bought four. She accused us of loitering and harassed us for several minutes in front of everyone. It seemed racially motivated considering plenty of white customers were not actively drinking either and were not being harassed. My friend and I were the only black people (I mean it's Brooklyn). The best bar that ever existed. Those of us who grew up in Brooklyn have nothing but respect for this place. I define great bars by the amount of time you can sit at a bar and be completely content. My record is 7 hours. My dad had his last drink here. This place is home. For those of you that didnt grow up here: You all need to show more respect here. Montero's! Karaoke with AMETHYST (lovely host with killer vocals). Need I say more. A friend of ours was having a birthday and we had to trek it do some hidden bar in Brooklyn Heights. My friend described this place as "aquatic themed" and a "dive". Two of my favorite words when combined together. I salivate at the thought of an old man bar and then you put karaoke in the mix like the cherry on top. We arrived around 9pm. Turns out this was the smartest move. Later I saw groups of people and even birthday people get turned away by the charming door guy "Pepe" while "Matthew" tried to woo me. The karaoke is done in the tiniest part of the bar. I suggest you'd stand in an angle to let people go to the bathroom but also leave room for "Sonya" to bus tables and get to the bar and still see the karaoke list. Back to Amethyst. You gotta write down the song you want to sing. If it's not in the computer then Amethyst will call you back to put in a new song. You get a song with every drink you order. If you are doing a duet then you hand the mic to the person who's being invited to sing. This is the rule. The name on the slip is the person that hands the mic. Don't forget. The main mic has the red tape. DON'T PUT DRINKS DOWN ON AMETHYST'S TABLE. At the bar, Kaddy is slinging drinks but will take a quick break to sing some Alanis Morisette. Everyone here is down for the wild ride! The beers are $4 for pbr and with a tequila shot it's $11. So pick your liquid courage wisely. This place is over 80 years old. The staff was really the best part, followed by the decor. The crowd is a young, finance, fresh out of grad school types and some older regulars sprinkled in. Montero's is the coolest place you'll ever have the privilege of drinking and celebrating in. There is no "it" scene here or fancy flair cocktails. It's an ancient dive bar that should be a museum to honor the New York of old that disappears faster than you can snap your fingers each day. My most recent visit was an early Friday evening after work (teacher hours mind you), and it felt like all regulars in the spot. Pool table was busy, early evening news was on, jukebox was loaded up with some jams, and the owner (?) as usual posted up at the end of the bar surveying his keep. Though it wasn't crowded, for our eventually large party of about 6+, it was difficult to be seated and not feel in the way of all traffic cause the place is so narrow. That may have been a blemish for my coworkers, but I've been here on karaoke nights when it was standing room only, so my standard of measurement is skewed. Perhaps this may not be our regular after work spot cause our group rolls too large, but I will be back with my crew for Karaoke one of these evenings! And for the early couple of first round drinks with 2-3 coworkers tops? Montero's works juuuust fine, and we should be so lucky to get to experience it. read more

I want to start off by saying three things -- One, I love this bar (the bartenders, except for the one described below, are all amazing)! Two, I'm not usually a "Yelper" but only do so when I feel the need to. DO NOT COME HERE WHEN THE BARTENDER DESCRIBED BELOW IS WORKING. I live around the corner and have been coming to this bar for a few years now. I came here on Wednesday night (7/12) to meet some friends, grab some drinks, and play pool. From the second I walked in, the bartender ( girl with short brown bob) was already glaring at me. She essentially ignored me for a few minutes while she happily chatted and laughed with other patrons (who me and my friend actually ended up knowing) So far, nothing out of the ordinary. I get it, you're tired and busy and this is New York, so I was willing to let this go. After more time of being ignored, she barks out from behind the bar "IDS." It was almost as if she thought I was trying to trick her or be sneaky?? I would've showed her the second I walked in but she had no interest. Again, I get it, but I don't like being not only stared at and ignored but now BARKED at? I hand her my ID and try to lighten the mood by saying "haha the picture is so bad, bad hair day" to which she continues to glare at me and slams the card back on the table and walks away. Maybe I wanted a drink...? But she couldn't have cared less. Off she goes to smile and chat and laugh with her friends. Finally, my friend orders a corona light, to which she snarkily replies, "we don't have that." so we ask for the regular, we get the drink, and pay. Which leads me to tipping. My friend leaves a nice tip and OBVIOUSLY I always tip at bars, restaurants, coffee places, etc. As someone who has worked in the food service industry for 6+ years. I GET IT! But I would not have given this woman an extra CENT. I think that staff deserves to know when they aren't doing a great job -- why would I tip this woman who is actively making me feel bad for just being in her space? For the rest of the night, she was, again, glaring, rolling her eyes as she moved about the space, and just setting a horrible tone and ambience for the bar that she is supposed to be representing. Finally, at the end of the night, she walks over to the pool table asking for last call and then grumbles "and this is your last game of pool." AGAIN, she is not actively doing anything wrong here but the way in which she is talking to people who are spending money there and putting money in her pocket is completely unacceptable. I refuse to come somewhere where I'm afraid or nervous to ask for something as simple as water. Meanwhile, my friend finally asked for a cup and got a sippy cup, barely halfway full, at room temp. There is no reason why she couldn't have tried just a LITTTTTLEEEE bit harder. Oh well, I shouldn't have expected anything more from her at this point. I have never EVER felt less than at a spot in this neighborhood like this. This bartender is a HORRIBLE example of an employee and NOT someone I would want working for me in any capacity. If I were in charge, she either needs to get her shit together and treat people with basic respect or decency, or she needs to leave and come back when she is able to do so. Again, I love love LOVE this bar, but if I come back and she is working I will most certainly NOT be tipping her. I hope she is taken care of and finds someone to help her get the stick out of her ass. read more

Somehow, after our weekly Brooklyn beach volleyball league games, we inevitably get sucked into the late night bar allure that is Montero's. Maybe it's the cheap drinks, or divey, nautical atmosphere....Or maybe it's the sometimes-awkward, Rick Moranis-looking, good joke-telling bartender, Alan. Either way, we always have a good time, and consume at least four times the amount of drinks we had initially planned for. Although there's no kitchen, there's an awesome 24-hour deli (Champion) located a block or two down the road, and you can bring your food in too. My only experience here is on weeknights, specifically after our volleyball games, so I can't speak to the karaoke or weekends...only to the jukebox. My one suggestion would be to set the jukebox to play random songs when there are no paid requests in the queue. There have been times when the bar is just about dead-silent, simply because nothing is playing at all. Aside from that, Montero's is a great time right by the pier, so if the waterside "Bark Hot Dogs" isn't up to snuff, or if you're looking for indoor seating in a relaxed environment, Montero's is your place! read more

Have never been moved to write a Yelp review before, but my experience a few nights ago was inspiring. Celine the bartender was one of the rudest, most aggressive people I have ever encountered. I was charged $10 for a well shot of whiskey, and when I asked about it (honestly thinking there'd been a mistake), it quickly became clear that she was hoping for any reason to start a fight. Over and over I chose not to engage with with her hostile comments, but my friends and I were all taken aback by her behavior. Truly bizarre. This one star is simply for the bartender with the black bob. Had a fantastic night with my friends sitting at the bar until she accused us of not tipping. We were being served all night by another bartender, and tipping on every order. Sometimes they bring in trays of ziti for patrons on holidays or special occasions. Montero's is a dying breed and no it's not filled with hipsters or people from the midwest. Since I don't live in the neighborhood anymore, I don't go here much these days, but it's good to know a few of these places still exist in a more and more homogenized New York City. We ended up here on just another Friday night, after finding out they had good karaoke. Not knowing anyone around, we ended up having a good time and talking with some pretty great people! Karaoke was a blast and the KJ was great. She made sure to keep everyone in the order they were submitted, even when one of the girls trying to sing gave her crap about it. What an EXCELLENT dive bar! I had a fabulous time here Saturday night. Montero - what I hear is possibly the oldest bar in Brooklyn - is small, cozy, and decked out in nautical trinkets and memorabilia. The staff are friendly, and they have a good (but standard) selection of drafts and bottled beers. But what really makes this place stand out from the pack is its vibe and LIT karaoke night. The minute you walk in, the staff and clientele make you feel like you're part of the family. And the karaoke, run singlehandedly by one person, was so much fun. You know the deal: get a sheet from the bar with your drink, write down your name and the song, give it to the DJ, and wait. The mics work great, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear many good singers cover everything from Creed to Lauryn Hill. All in all, Montero is a blast and will likely be a Brooklyn Heights landmark for years to come. read more

But for those who live outside of the neighborhood who want to add a new sticky-floored dive to their rotation, you should probably bookmark and make an effort to visit. Their most popular night is easily Saturday when then bring in a ramshackle karaoke rig that's fun, approachable, and non-pretentious. For every drink you buy at the bar, you're given a small sheet of paper that grants you an opportunity to belt out a tune. The karaoke DJ is a delight, and don't mind the fact that you'll be singing right in front of the toilets. It gives the whole performance some charm. Drinks are a little pricey for well cocktails mixed with grocery store bottled club soda, but hey -- inflation. You can bring in outside food, and the bar is dog friendly. Two major bonuses that easily make up for any shortcomings you may encounter. read more

I've been meaning to hit this place up ever since last year I was touring around red hook and walked past it and noticed an old woman with blue hair drinking a pabst alone on a Friday night at 10. Nothing on tap, drinks are cheap, karokee on Friday nights where the old timers can feel like Neil Diamond - amazing! You feel like Doc Brown had you jump in the Delorean and are back in Brooklyn in 1970's. If you don't like the joint, the answer is simple. Go to to some of the hoity toity places up the road that will eventually have their run, cause this joint is still running on a wooden leg and a shot of jack daniels. read more

I can't speak to the other days of the week but when I lived in New York I lived for weekends at Montero's, where everybody truly knows your name because inevitably you become friends with everyone who goes there and then your friends just keep going there forever until one weekend you're like, "maybe I should take a break from going here" and then you go somewhere else and get withdrawals from not having been at Montero's. I go to school in New Orleans right now but whenever I fly back to NY I make it a point to go to Montero's because it really is THE BEST. IT IS THE BEST. PERIOD. read more

Not sure where the "grill" part comes in, but this is the best old school bar in Brooklyn, complete with the most eclectic mix of people. Incredible amalgamation of hipsters, nerds, old neighborhood ladies (sometimes in their mumus), construction workers, you name it. Admittedly, I've mostly gone on karaoke nights - which are a blast - and have been getting progressively more crowded. (Hmm, bad idea to yelp about this place? But maybe its newfound popularity will keep it in business.) Still, drinks are cheap - like throwback prices - and when you are down to your last few bucks start getting the PBR cans to last you well into the night and then some. Not even approaching the level of Kelly's in Bay Ridge, where I was invited by an old dude in a Notre Dame jacket to "climb inside my fucking parka, pussy boy." This is not the bar to visit if you want to bring your friends and then talk loudly about what a weird place Montero's is. If things were totally right with the world, outsiders would nurse their drinks unobtrusively, and some woulda-been "contender" would damage the loud pseudo hipster gawkers with a tire iron. It goes without saying that your expectations should be greatly diminished if you order anything more complex than a Seven and Seven. There's an old snooze who's often at the bar explaining to the nodding out set the difference between port and sherry. However... - Did a random friendly semi-crazy looking man in overalls make me a balloon hat? With a yellow flower atop a purple base that he declared was a "classic look"? Yes. - Is almost oppressive amount of trinkets, gadgets and signage that constitute the decor -- many nautical themed, as this place was apparently once a longshoreman's hangout -- completely impressive and absorbing? Yes. My friend had her birthday party here and we basically had free reign of the place. It was awesome and so much fun. I'd definitely recommend bringing a group here that would appreciate its wonders.
