People do forget that it Is really hard to run a small business in South End for so many years - i really appreciate Shawmut place sticking around - they have good tailoring and caring work - but just like anything quality you need to give it time - i found that letting them tell me when they can "really" have it done works! Come on, if you want your dry cleaning done in a day, take it to Dependable or another chain, Shawmut place is really best place for alterations, not dry cleaning. French dry cleaners in the neighborhood are great for special pieces dry cleaning. read more

I have been going to Shawmut Place for over 4 years now for both my dry cleaning and any alterations and tailoring. I have had them alter several expensive designer dresses for me and they always come back perfect! Most recently, I brought a dress that I thought was ruined by a spray tan and the owner spent the time to find a specialty dry cleaner who could fix what I thought was a ruined dress! I highly recommend Shawmut Place - such great service! read more

They are incompetent. I brought multiple suit pants to hem. All my pants came back uneven - one leg shorter than the other and they were not the correct length i advised them to follow. Blazers were the same issue. One arm is shorter than the other. Front desk is also rude. They are a nightmare to deal with. I would give them zero stars if I can. read more

Friendly staff but that's not why I visit a laundry service. They send out their dry cleaning to other services. I have consistently had problems with garments being misplaced or even worse. When I drop off a group of items, I expect to return and and get all of them back at the same time. Typically what happens at Shawmut is that I get some back and have to return at a later date for the rest. I usually drop off on Saturday and am gone all week for work. So pickups are also on a Saturday. They have my stuff for st least a week. Often I have had to return two weeks later, and worse, sometimes three. This review was written because my most recent encounter was a lost dress that my wife adored. It was a special dry clean because it was a mixture of leather and fabric. So when I tried to pick it up (2nd trip in for it) and was told it could not be found, my disappointment was followed up by dealing with my wife's tears at the loss of her beloved dress. Of course, Shawmut said they would pay for it, but sometimes money doesn't quite cover the loss. Sorry Shawmut, you have lost my confidence and my business. read more

Warning: keep your dry cleaning ticket, or they might lose track of your stuff. When my husband picked up our dry cleaning, they gave him his portion of the order and had failed to keep all of our belongings together (ie my dry cleaning was missing). This happened a few times. I had also dropped off jeans to be tailored; when I went to pick them up a week later, they said they couldn't find them. The lady took my number and said she would call when they found them. She never called. When we went back they had found my jeans but had still not done the tailoring -- two full weeks had passed since I had dropped them off and no work has been. Lost clothing. Awful service. I brought clothes there to be patched in February. I finally got a call on 4/5 to pick them up. I paid for it only to come home and find that the clothes were never fixed. This is my second splendid review for Shawmut Place; given others' negative comments, I want to emphasize my approval by citing two new experiences. 1. New loveseats came with pillows scaled for full-sized sofas. Called upholsterer recommended by the high-end originating store to cut them in half; was quoted $420 with a waiting time of four months. Shawmut Place charged $120 for this heavy-duty and unusual job, and RUSHED to have it finished (expertly) within a week because company was coming. 2. Beloved partner not eager to allow treasured jacket to leave house to be cleaned until I insisted. Shawmut Place cleaned jacket and then inspected it thoroughly, determining that it needed to be cleaned again. It came back in spotless renewed condition, and the price was very reasonable. read more

It's been a while since the alterations, so this update is due ... incredible work. All the jeans have their original bottoms, and the pair that was somehow blown out at the seat is now totally wearable. No, it's not cheap, at 24.50 for hemming w/ the original bottoms (18 w/o), but it's totally worth it. I've since had them repair a pair of khakis that had a hole in the crotch (seriously, what's wrong with my crotch?) and they've hemmed a pair of pretty pricey pants, too, now that I trust them. Their next project: elbow patches for a cardigan that developed a hole in the elbow. I trust it will go well. read more

I had walked by Shawmut Place on several instances before having them tailor / reinforce stitching on a jacket. Based on my experience using another shop nearby, I was bracing myself for a 2 week wait and a hefty price. Not only was the cost less than 1/2 of what I anticipated, they turned it around that day! Actually, they quoted it would be done at 5:00, then called at 1:30 stating it was done. Great service + pricing at Shawmut Place! I'm sold. read more

Shawmut place saved many of my favorite sweaters that been ruined by moth. I've brought Irina cashmere and wool sweaters and she performed miracle on every piece! She is the owner of this place and cares about her work. It's amazing work for reasonable prices. If you need your garment repair even thinking this can't be done try to meet with Irina and she will take a look. Sure you will have to wait some weeks but the wait is completely worth it! read more

Such wonderful customer service! I brought in a few items including a pair of shorts that had a ripped hem. The gentleman fixed it on the spot free of charge, waving his hand away when I offered! Their work was excellent and they have a real eye for detail, making suggestions about adding button closures, etc. Great mirrors! Couldn't be happier and very glad I came across this tailor. Incredibly RUDE, unprofessional and expensive! This is my first Yelp review....which shows how angry this place made me. When I asked for a discount on an item because it took much longer than I anticipated - (the tailor went on vacation and forgot about my item for weeks, normally good customer service offers SOMETHING if a customer has a reason to be unhappy), the owner actually yelled at me in front of another customer about how much her rent costs and how she is just a "grandmother" trying to make ends meet, and other people wait even longer for their items to be finished, (not exactly a good thing....), and good luck trying to find another tailor in the neighbourhood (there's one just up the street on Tremont.....). I have never been spoken to by someone like this in a business setting, ever. I initially came to pick up my item and drop another one off, but instead I took my new business elsewhere (if she would have just given me $5 off or showed some kind of appreciation for my business I would have continued to use their services, but she clearly doesn't understand the concept of good customer service and how to keep clients coming back). No customer wants to be scolded in public. Maybe if they were nicer they wouldn't be having so much trouble paying rent. Take your business elsewhere...the staff at Shawmut place feel that they are entitled to charge more than anyone else for bad service, because they think they are the only tailors in town. Wrong. Go to French Cleaners instead. read more

This is my second time leaving Shawmut place a happy camper. I brought a bridesmaids dress in a few months ago and it was a pretty easy job, taking up the hem and tightening up the straps since they would fall off the shoulders. Looked great. Brought another dress in on Monday, needed to be taken out a little (ugh embarrassing) and hemmed. I have no idea how these things work and didn't even know if it is possible. They said it was no problem and would be ready for me to try on the day before I needed it (a week and a half later). Well I got a call yesterday (Thursday) that it was ready. SO fast for all that work! I just went in and tried it on and it's perfect. I don't know how they did it but it looks perfect. I am SO happy. It wasn't cheap ($55 alone for the hem and $55 for the letting out) but totally worth it since I know it's not a easy job! Highly recommend. read more

I've had a few things tailored here and always get a great result. I brought in a dress that needed to be taken in, and the alteration was somewhat complicated, but it ended up fitting like a glove. The seamstress is russian and uses another girl there to help translate. She does amazing work - I doubt any americans are trained this way. I think the price is reasonable for the skill. They are also accommodating if you need something quickly. read more

I dont write reviews often but since the people who have reviewed this place were so out of touch I thought I would balance the opinions. They didnt teach customer service or marketing in the old Soviet Union, they taught tailoring and dressmaking and they taught it well.Yes they are not the cheapest place but they are the best. If all you need is a button sewn on go somewhere else. If you want the best tailoring and dressmaking this is the place in Boston Great customer service is no replacement for great tailoring. You get what you pay for and I'd rather not pay for other people's dry cleaning issues or their need to be catered to. read more

I will never come back to this place for many reasons. Besides the fact that it's inconvenient that they don't accept debit/credit, they completely over price. It cost me $22 to get a shirt hemmed. After checking several other places that do alterations, I realized that generally the same work costs $12. They did not have my clothes ready when they said they would and showed absolutely no remorse about their tardiness. When I finally picked up my clothes, the lady (who appeared to be the manager) was completely rude and disrespectful to me. Went to a local thrift shop and picked up a Brown Polo shirt and a cream colored tie. Went to "SP" and told them what I wanted to do ( Modify the reverse of the collar and highlight the side slits and change the buttons.)I went back on Tuesday and Holy S%$T the shirt looked like I went to Macy's and brought it like that. Years ago I would have given Shawmut Place five stars. That was years ago! I went in last week on a Thursday and found the alteration person is never in on Thursday. I went back into town the following day. Met with the alteration woman who assured me the two pieces (a dress and a skirt for minor alterations) would be ready the following Thursday. Drove back into the South End today to pick up the items and they had not been touched. I found the staff to be kind but the management leaves a great deal to be desired. I will no longer use their "services" nor refer any of my clients to use them. This is my first ever yelp review and it pains me to give only one star read more

DO NOT GO HERE. I recently had them dry clean a nice pair of pants and they LOST them. I went back 4 times, while they stalled telling me that they couldn't find them, then finally they admitted they had misplaced them. I asked if I could buy a new pair and bring in the receipt. Irina rudely waived me away and said fine fine whatever. On my way out I double checked at their front desk that I could buy a comparable pair and in fact get reimbursed. She then said their policy was to pay 10x the price to dry clean the item. That means they'll only give me $45 toward a new pair of dress pants that cost me $200 to buy!!! And they weren't even going to tell me until after I brought the receipt in!! They were rude and unapologetic. I would highly advise against using these people. read more

Took them just a few days to tailor my men's dress shirt, and they called to say it was ready 1-2 days earlier than promised, which was a nice surprise. The stitching was very well done and it fit perfectly. However, they charged me $45! It was something like $30 to tailor the sides and another $15 to tailor the sleeves. I've had shirts tailored at several other local tailors and no one charged more than $20 for the entire shirt. While I was pleased with the quality, I probably won't go back because I feel sort of ripped off. read more

I have tried cleaers all over the city and I think these guys do a great job. Stuff always seems cared for and they are very quick. If items do not come back cleaned to their standards, they send it back before you do. They also do a great job with alterations. read more

Obscenely overpriced. I brought in a pair of unlined cotton pants that needed to be hemmed just an inch or two. No cutting of fabric, no opening of seams, no moving buttons or zippers. For this most basic alteration I was charged nineteen dollars. NINETEEN dollars. For something that probably took 10 minutes to do. No thanks. I'll be heading back to Newbury Street. read more

I don't ever write reviews, and rarely read them. But I had to write to say how truly helpful and professional they had treated me. My girlfriend wore a brand new blouse and placed a piece of chewed gum in her breast pocket. During the day, the gum leaked from the wrapper. She thought it ruined but I froze and removed as much gum as I could from the inside pocket. I took it to Shawmut Place, explained what happened and asked if it would benefit from dry cleaning. They sent it out 2 extra times on their own volition (I wasn't dealing with the same person behind the counter and I was a new customer). I hadn't expected the gum to come out of the blouse, but it did and only because these people knew it was possible and had respect for clothing and its cost. I've been very happy with their alterations too over the last year. read more

I'm a regular customer of JCrew store and 3 weeks ago I've bough a suit from them which needed a lot of complicated work to be done. There was shortening sleeves not from the bottom but from the shoulder so the style would not change, plus taking in back and tapering pants. Usually the JCrew staff doing fitting and sending out the alterations, but for this time they said I have to go straight to the tailors to the Shawmut place so that's how I met them! I was overly surrounded with a friendly and professional atmosphere over there. There is only one lady who is doing tailoring for JCrew store and her name is Janna (I'm not sure if I'm spelling it right), she did a magic work and what is most important she did it for the next day morning, even though I came afternoon, because I had to take a flight next day. My suit came up top notch and fitted like a glove! Thank you so much Shawmut place and it was nice to find you guys , I will defiantly come back soon! Highly recommended ! read more

I've been going to Irena at Shawmut Place for a few years now. Most of my dress clothes, be they shirts, pants, or suits get altered. I must say, Irena does great work, however, the price is VERY steep. Most recently she wanted to charge me $19 for hemming (simple, no cuff) a pair of dress pants! The store where I bought them was going to do it for $8. I chose to go to Shawmut Place because I didn't have dress shoes with me when I bought the pants. I knew Shawmut Place would be a little more expensive, but was shocked when I got home and looked at the price. I called Irena to ask about the price. She told me that she runs her own business and larger stores don't have to pay much for a tailor. She tried to justify the exorbitant price for getting better quality. And I don't doubt that she does excellent work. However, a simple hem is a simple hem. And how much more do you get in quality for an additional 163%? She actually told me that she would not do any other work for me if I didn't like the price. I called around and found that the going rate at tailor shops is more like $12. I will not, like another reviewer here, be taking my business to Shawmut Place any more. I think if you look around, you can probably find what you're looking for for a much better price. read more
