Extremely expensive with little to no customer service. I had two dresses tailored here: one was only a hem and turned out fine, but the second was a completely different experience. The dress needed to be taken in at both the top and the waist. The tailor only adjusted the top and assured me that would also fix the looseness in the waist, so I trusted her professional judgment. Unfortunately, when I got the dress back, it was too tight on top and still far too loose at the waist. While I take responsibility for not pushing back more at the time, the final result clearly wasn't right. To make matters worse, the hem ended up too long. When I brought it up, they insisted it was the length I had chosen, which I strongly disagree with. When I asked if they could simply take it up another inch, I was told I would need to pay again. After spending $440, I was shocked they wouldn't make a minor adjustment as a courtesy especially given the issues with the fit. Overall, the experience felt dismissive and not at all worth the price. I would not recommend. read more

Altered dress by mistakenly removing the train and making the dress 3 inches too short and left grease stains on both back and front of dress. My experience here was very poor and stressful. I had my wedding gown, bridesmaid dress, and my stepdaughter's dress altered. They did a good job with the bridesmaid dress and with adding a bustle to my wedding gown. They did a good job with my strep daughter's dress except they actually lost a flower that they were supposed to sew onto it that was part of the dress- said they never remembered getting a flower. For my 1st wedding gown appt, the tailor was very unengaged and I don't think she was listening. I had 3 dresses to alter and she had her lunch during my appt time, making me and my young stepdaughter wait. I asked for the top to be fixed and for the bottom to be hemmed because it was way too long. When I went back, only the top was done, not the bottom at all, and she gave a confusing explanation for this. This means I had to go back a 3rd time. The 3rd fitting, the dress was still not hemmed and they didn't have an explanation. They said they could do it in 1 hr if I waited around, so me and my family walked around in the hot sun waiting for them. The dress then finally fit correctly. Also, the pricing is extremely high- almost 2x what other tailors charge. This was such a stressful experience when weddings are already stressful to plan. I have a handsome pair of old-style, pleated wool trousers (in a beautiful dark-green, herringbone fabric). Because I have lost weight, I asked "Best Fit" to take in the waist and seat. Weeks later, when I picked up the trousers, the waist and seat looked good, but the left, side-pocket area has a weird droop of fabric that looks demented. The tailor said they had only taken in the waist and the droop of fabric was simply because I didn't have on a belt. She was quite adamant that the drooping fabric had nothing to do with the alterations she had done. (I forgot that they had taken in the seat so I didn't challenge her claim.) Unless I can find another tailor to fix it, the trousers are ruined. Also, I agree with Brian C. (9/26/17): even when I first dropped off the trousers for alteration, the woman acted like I was an inconvenience. Don E. read more

I have been to other tailors on Newbury and in my opinion, Best Fit is the best BY FAR. Said in Russian accent: "Eh, normally I don't like to do this without good bra." And with that, my mom's mother of the bride dress was attempting to get a best fit by the lady at Best Fit. Ladies, make sure that when you try the dress on that you plan to wear that you wear a good bra with it...my mom told me when we left, "that was my good bra." Aaah, we ended up walking down the street to purchase a bra from this decade... My mom came here in April and the wedding was just days ago and man oh man, did this woman do a great job! The price was not too bad (sixty five bucks) and it looked gorgeous. If you go here, get someone to drive you, as you will not find parking nearby (unless you park in a loading zone and leave your hazard lights on and sit in the car whilst your mom runs up the stairs to pick up her dress). Parking on Newbury on a Saturday afternoon, it ain't easy! The area of best fit is quite nice. Hardwood floors, big sweeping ceiling to floor windows that look out on Newbury. Makes you feel fancy. Even a picture of the late Great Senator Ted Kennedy was on the wall with a letter thanking Best Fit for all his suit alterations. A total waste of time, awful customer service, overpriced and claimed doable alterations to be impossible. I have no idea where these good reviews are coming from because in hindsight I should have walked out of this shop right away based on how I was treated. My tailor was curt, rude and did the bare minimum. I was told that there was: - no way to bustle my dress in a way that would not drastically alter the train - that only an inch that could be added to the bust line - that in total this plus the shortening the dress was going to cost me $700 dollars On top of that their dress maker was going to on vacation in August (which makes a TON of business sense being that one of the most popular wedding months is September) so I would have to bring my dress somewhere else if I needed anything done in the month before my September wedding. SO I came to my senses, grabbed my dress and walked two blocks to see Carlos at Newbury Tailoring. Carlos was warm, nice, on point and said right away that the dress could be let out more than an inch, he could definitely do a train and all for a much more reasonable price. If any one needs to learn how not to treat a customer, go to Best Fit. Brides, avoid it like a drunk wedding guest coming at you with a glass of red wine. read more

Great hardworking ladies, do an amazing quality job. Bought a beautiful Anthropologie embroidered wool coat that had insanely long arms for a petite short girl like me. They shorted the sleeves beautifully in a week and it cost $35 -- nice deal considering the coat was $320. Was worried since it was a new coat, really can't even tell the sleeves didn't come this way. Love how it fits now and I will keep them in mind for other alterations in the future. So, I had a disaster of a time with my wedding dress. I went to Yolanda's (boooh) and they ordered a dress that was a veritable tent on me when it arrived (with the explanation that it was safer to order large because it's easier to take a dress in than let it out). Of course they kindly offered their tailoring services to me at an exorbitant price. Not unlike Amy Winehouse, I said "No, no, no" and went to find a different tailor. I'd read good things about Best Fit and decided to give them a go. I was greeted by a small warm space on Newbury street with two woman running around speaking Russian back and forth at each other while hemming and pinning and doing all sorts of sewing type things. It felt very nice and homey and I decided to go with them. They had to take the dress in a considerable amount, including moving seams and doing all sorts of crazy seamstressy stuff I have no idea about. To put it bluntly, it became more of a work of architecture than simply bringing the dress in a bit. I think we could've made a spare dress with the material left over. Considering all the work they did, I found their pricing to be very competitive. They got everything done in time, and the dress looked flawless. They even reshaped the bodice part of it so that it would be more flattering to my figure as opposed to the original design, which I thought was fantastic and fell into the category of going above and beyond. HOWEVER, the only reason I am not giving them a full 5 stars is because day of the wedding, my dress started losing buttons. This is not to say I suddenly gained weight and was popping them...my dress had a zipper back that was covered by one of those faux button panels that ran the length of the dress through the train. They weren't secured properly, so in the end I was sort of like Hansel and Gretel, leaving a train of buttons wherever I went. But, again, considering the massive work they did on the dress, on a tight timeline, for a good price, I can't hold it against them that much, and would go back if I needed something else altered. They also did my bridesmaids dress and it came out flawless. read more

I read at least 15-20+ reviews of tailors around the Boston area before settling on Best Fit, and I have been pleased with every service I have received. Items I have gotten tailored here: - Two suits (suit jacket and pants, Theory and JCrew) - I believe these were $70 for each set - Additional blazer (Theory) - took in to make narrower - Wool coat (JCrew) - took in at the waist to make narrower - think this was $30-40 - Jeans (Paige) - fixed a rip adjacent to one of the back pockets for about $30 The ladies of Best Fit are hardworking Russian women who will tell you exactly what they can and cannot do. Example: I brought them a jacket with a broken zipper once, and they actually recommended that I contact the manufacturer to get a replacement zipper, because they thought it would look better than if they used one of their own zippers (which they showed to me, and I agreed with them). They could have just replaced the zipper and charged me, but instead they gave me the option so that I could be most satisfied with my service. They work quickly and I have never had to wait for more than a few minutes for service on busy days. Their turnaround time is excellent, with items always ready in about 5-7 days, and sooner if I asked for something within the next few days. They also have good availability during weekend hours. In terms of pricing, I feel they are reasonable, I have had items tailored at other places in the city for both more and less money and in both cases, the service was not as good as it is here. If I remember correctly, I paid $70 to tailor one suit jacket plus pants, and tailoring a pair of jeans was about $30 (they were by Paige, which run $100-200 per pair, so this was reasonable to me). The only downside to this place which I have seen mentioned in some of the online reviews is the personality of these ladies. If you are looking for your tailor to spend lots of time getting to know you, then this is not your place - these ladies are efficient and while I find them to be pleasant, they are definitely more on the no-nonsense all-business end of the spectrum. Personally, I don't mind a bit of gruffness in exchange for excellent service. Like Julie, I got my dress at the Filene's Basement running of the brides sale for $250. But allow me to digress for a moment. I saw a fabo Manuel Mota sample dress at L'Elite on Valentine's Day. I was sure the stars were aligned and the price was right so I would get it. Unfortunately, it was about 4 sizes too small, but no biggie according to the cute lady at L'Elite, we can fix it up. Sure, we can fix it up for $1000 in alterations. Ew. No thanks. Filene's Basement sale to the rescue! However, dress is a lil snug. Upon a recommendation from a friend who had Ludmila make her dress from scratch, I went to see the Russian seamgoddess and she made the dress fit perfectly for a very reasonable price. I took my wedding dress to Best Fit and was very happy with the end result. The dress itself had very delicate lace from the waist down and needed to be shortened. The difficulty was that shortening had to happen from the waist thus requiring taking apart the dress. I went in 3 times for fitting and each time I was seen right away. Aside from the initial visit, the subsequent appointments took less than 15 minutes (which to me is a good thing) and the dress came out superb! In terms of cost...it wasn't cheap but it's a wedding dress and you just dont go cheap on that. I was quoted $500 and with the winter discount for wedding dresses, it was adjusted to $475. At the end of the day, after 3 fittings, added cups b/c I dont have any boobs and the top half taken in slightly, I paid $460. In some other reviews, people ranted about the customer service and the demeanor of the tailors. I had very pleasant interactions each time. I think the women who helped me were the owners and while they weren't all milk and honey, they were very polite, professional and all business. I went in there asking for a service and that's what I got. If you need someone to flit and flutter and make a big fuss about you, don't expect that here. This is a business and they have a lot of it coming through with no time for silliness. I did get a smile out of them when I did my final fitting and was so happy I hugged them. I have been going to Best fit for over 15 years. Recently I had multiple pairs of jeans tailored with the original hem reattached. After two weeks I went in to pick up my clothes and quickly discovered that one pair of jeans did not have the original hem. I paid for the service in advance and was quite clear about what I wanted done. Always try on your clothes before leaving the shop. After pressing the issue they admitted the original hem was not done - At this point I asked for a refund and left. The jeans are vintage and expensive. I'm detecting a bit of dishonesty on their part - If I had just left I would have been charged for a service that was not done. First thing they will say "I can't do anything about this." 3 seconds after looking at it: "I can do this and that etc". Amazing work, but a bit pricy. Totally worth it for good clothes/dresses/formal wear but I wouldn't come here to get jeans or cheap jackets done. I went as a walk-in for 2 dresses and 2 suit jackets for fitting. I waited 2 weeks to get everything done (month of June.) You can also schedule an appointment if you think your work will take longer (wedding gown/prom dresses.) And, after speaking with one of the ladies there, she said that during the summer it gets busier so it' good to call ahead and just state that at some point you will bring a dress in so they can put it on their schedule. I came here the other week to have 1 shirt altered (a size XS Slim male shirt to be made for me) and also 3 skirts taken out a little bit. The woman was nice but not terribly friendly; she told me essentially I should be a size 4 (not size 2) and their turn around time is nothing too great (1 full week for alterations). I suppose if I had pushed she would have given to me sooner the things I wanted done. the price not cheap; the shirt was 25 dollars alone to be fixed & the skirts 60. I wanted so badly to love this place! With so many good reviews and a specialization in bridesmaids dresses I didn't hesitate to bring my dress here. I needed a chiffon, beaded dress with a satin lining hemmed about six inches. It was a short turn around, I needed the dress in just a week and a half. Maybe I asked them for too much too quickly but when I received the dress back one side of lining hem is a good two inches longer than the rest of the dress. I would have expected the beading to be disrupted maybe or the hem to be a slightly different length than I asked. But to have the lining be protruding from the bottom of the dress? That's a garish mistake for a reputable tailor. The botched hem job cost me $70 and I now have to find an alternative solution before the wedding (in a week!). read more

I brought a J.Crew bridesmaid dress here that I had to have let out prior to my friend's wedding. Although I was super embarrassed that I had to have a dress let out in the first place (while I did buy it six months earlier per her request, there is NO excuse for my weight gain)...the ladies at the shop insisted they would be able to make it fit like a glove. Now, keep in mind that these women do not mince words. If they have something to say, they are going to say it. So be prepared to hear some unflattering things. There is nothing said with mean-spirited intentions, but more so, they are simply reflecting back what they have to do as a result of your hips...maybe your chest...or your butt. I heard it all and I sucked it up. Boy, am I glad I did. On the big day, my friend examined my dress up and down and declared "I can't even tell that this has been altered" (unlike some of the other girls). For letting out, lifting the hem, and lifting the shoulders (because the top was still gaping) I paid $100.00. It was all done in less than two weeks. Great job. I've already recommended the place to my friends and co-workers and all have said they are satisfied with the services. read more

I've only had one thing altered here so far, but I must say.. That one thing meant a whole lot to me. Bostonians all know that Filene's Basement closed back in January (sad face) And in that mass mayhem, I managed to snag a Yves Saint Laurent dress that fit.. but was just loose ever so slightly around my waist. I scoured the city, I scoured Yelp.. And my boyfriend had recently had a Theory suit tailored there. Although hesitant, after seeing the job they did on his suit, I took the chance. You have to be buzzed in. And once you're in, you go up some creepy old staircases (like what building in Boston doesn't have it?) and you are greeted by two older Russian women. Long story, short: $50 to take it in at the zipper, ready to pick up in a week and a half (I even told her I wasn't in a rush!) When I went to pick it up and try it on, it was possibly the best fitting thing I have ever put on my body! Now to just stay in this shape forever... read more

I went here because I was lusting after the perfect denim jacket with leather sleeves. All of the jackets I found to purchase either weren't real leather or the denim wasn't the right shade. If it was perfect, it was $400+, which I was unwilling to pay. I decided to find a tailor to take one of my denim jackets, remove the sleeves, and add leather sleeves from another one of my jackets. I used Yelp to find Best Fit, and I'm glad I did! I didn't need to make an appointment, I just walked in. I didn't need to be fitted for this particular job, since it wasn't a question of making the garment fit. At first the woman I spoke with seemed hesitant or confused about what I wanted. 3 weeks (I told them no rush) and $120 later (I'm not sure if this was expensive for the job -- the way I see it, its the perfect jacket and way less than $400) my perfect jacket was done. They were able to match the seams and the thread and even make the lining of the sleeves work with the unlined jacket. You'd never believe the jacket wasn't originally made that way. They also gave me back my denim sleeves and leather jacket body, which I will probably bring back to them sometime soon to be made into a vest. I will definitely be coming back to Best Fit for future tailoring. read more

I normally get my clothing tailored in New York or abroad, and I spend a lot of time choosing and developing a close relationship with my tailors. I've sponsored a brilliant tailor from Sierra Leone whom I met in Tanzania. Now that I'm living in Boston, I need to find someone who can tailor the type of clothing I have to a perfect fit. Someone who understands the clothes. So, after consulting Yelp, I took some clothes to Jerry's for tailoring and he kindly directed me to Best Fit instead. He says he doesn't tailor high fashion clothing of the kind I brought in (I had a Temperley runway piece and some other items), and that his machines would not suit the delicate materials on my Alexander McQueen skirt and pants. The owner at Best Fit was also a little weirded out by my clothes (the Margiela pants with an invisible elastic band for hooking shoes really are a bit odd), but she was accepting, efficient and honest (to my minimally trained eye). She told me when she thought tailoring was unnecessary, preferring the "original design" to even minimal changes--I like this honesty and I think she was right. I liked her efficient attitude, though I absolutely didn't like being rushed when another appointment was up soon. The most important thing though is when a tailor is meticulous and careful. To me, customer service is not in the attitude---so long as the tailor is extremely careful to fit things perfectly well, I'm happy. So, I really hope this turns out perfectly despite the rush. The bill turned out to be extremely high (almost $350!) for alterations (and one pocket repair) on just a coat and the McQueen skirt (without major alterations involving re-setting the shoulders or narrowing the armholes). At those prices, these frankly better turn out to be the best tailored pieces for my body that I've ever seen. I'm expecting the pieces to fit my body EXACTLY right. Hopefully my search for a go-to Boston tailor will be over, and I won't have to go to New York for alterations anymore. I'd love to come back with the rest of my closet. read more

Pleasant experience with getting a silk dress hemmed. Its the first time I've ever seen the white powder pump machine used to mark the hem. She paid attention to detail and has my dress ready in a week. The cost was $35 which is about right based on previous experiences. I've stopped by three times in the past month with denim jeans repairs, hemming and alterations. Firstly, DENIM REPAIR IS AFFORDABLE! I've been to other places, and I would grade the work as an A- at C+ prices. Really happy. (Although, my jeans are semi-premium, so it makes sense to drop $30 to repair $200 jeans... But I guess if you're looking to repair jeans, you've already done your own cost/benefit calculus). I think the lady in the front is quite helpful. She's given me advice on cheaper fixes to get the look I want. Getting off-the-rack blazers is slightly problematic for me and she's helped find the best combination of fixes to get the look i want. Only went to this place because there was nothing else open. The service is not great (is it a universal rule that all tailors have to be in a bad mood always?), although the place is nice and neat. I brought two items in: a pair of silk pants and a silk skirt to be altered. Granted, the skirt was pretty complicated. She took both and I trusted her. I picked them up today and realized that one of the specific things I asked her to do, to close the slits on both sides a little more, she only did one side of. Now I have a lopsided skirt. Yay! I had my Rosa Clara wedding gown altered here last year. It was by far the most expensive tailoring I've ever had done (the bill was $485), but the end result was a gown that fit so perfectly I decided it was a matter of "getting what you pay for" and being willing to pay for the best. The work needed was not terribly complex: I had the gown shortened and taken in slightly around the ribs, and I had padded cups sewn in as the plunging, sheer laced-lined back made it virtually impossible to wear any kind of bra. Still, the delicate materials required sensitivity and precision, and Lyudmila made the whole experience feel like something akin to haute couture. She's not a hand-holder, if you know what I mean, but she is a real master at her craft and she really does deliver on the promise of creating the Best Fit. read more

Not to repeat what has already been said here, but it is all true! I found Best Fit from my fellow Yelpers when I was in need of altering a bridesmaid dress. Obviously a bit nervous because its not like I could get a new dress if this one was messed up, I decided to go with Best Fit because I love finding people who are true to their craft. My cobbler isn't just someone who fixes shoes, he's like 95 and from the "old country". Well Best Fit is now added to my list of trusted services. So back to the alterations. I called to see if I needed an appointment and she said that I could walk in but alterations were better so that I wouldn't have to wait. There was a spot open right when I needed it. I brought in my dress, undergarments, and shoes and was brought into the spacious space to put on the dress. The seamstress was wonderful taking in my dress so that it fit perfectly. When I even asked about if it was tight enough on top (strapless dress concerns) she explained why she took it in how she did, and even took it in a bit more to see why it wouldn't look good. The dress has ruching on top and a chiffon skirt so I was worried to see how the final product would turn out with such difficult fabric. Well, I just picked up my dress and it fits perfectly! Its taken in just right and really makes the most out of my curves. I never felt that the women working there were cold or rude as other reviewers have said. They're there to do their job, and do it well. My alterations cost about $90 dollars. With the boning of the dress and difficult fabrics I thought this was totally reasonable.
