I hardly leave reviews but I really disappointed with my experience here. I had a one-layer dress that needed to be hemmed a couple of inches and was quoted at $90. When I arrived to pick up my dress over a week later, I asked to try it on and the woman said there was no need because it was only hemmed. I tried it on anyway and it turned out the dress hadn't been hemmed at all. I told her i was flying out the next day so she told me to come in 2 hours. I went back to car and decided I coupd get it hemmed at my destination. I called another tailor who said they could do it on 2 days for $55. So I went back to the store 10 minutes later and she had already trimmed the dress. She charged me $80 for 10 minutes of work and was completely unapologetic about the inconvenience. read more

Excellent tailoring, I took my lace engagement dress to be altered and it fits perfectly. I also got her to alter my flower girl dress to be adjusted. She also made a page boy vest (waistcoat) from material that matched the groom. (There was a slight hiccup on the date for one of them but she managed to deliver everything ahead 9f our wedding.) read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. HORRIBLE experience, not even one redeeming factor. I was a June 2023 bride, brought my wedding dress into the shop on February 11th, which I thought was more than enough time. The only woman in the shop at the time didn't speak a lick of English, which was a bit of red flag to me, but I ignored my gut because the shop had good reviews and she could still very well be an amazing seamstress. I wanted to support a local place. She had me put the dress on and place pins/mark the dress for alterations, and wrote me an estimate that seemed suspiciously low. I left the shop, and awaited a call for when I should come back in for a fitting. I didn't want to be an impatient client, so I waited a whole 3 months to hear from them before I finally called the shop to ask how much longer it would be until I needed to come back in for a fitting. The woman I spoke with on the phone said "Oh! You need to come in!" which was very concerning to me because I thought, why wouldn't they have called me if I needed to come in...? I go back to the shop (it's mid-May at this point), and NO WORK had been done to the dress since I dropped it off in February. My heart sank. Apparently the women who worked with me the first time didn't do the intake correctly, (WHY they didn't call me sooner I have no idea) so I had to put the dress on again and have who I assume was the shop owner re-do all the pins and markings. I didn't really want to give them my business anymore, but at this point I was only a little over a month out from my wedding so it was kinda too late to find another shop to do it. We agreed that I'd come back in another 4 weeks. I show up on June 10th, and once again NO WORK had been done to the dress. My wedding is now 2 weeks away. I was horrified and visibly upset. I told her it needed to be ready for a fitting in the next 4 days. The alterations it needed weren't even that complex! At this point, I had been so worried about it being done that I had ordered a cheap backup dress online just in case. I go back after the 4 days, and the alterations were almost done. I returned 2 days later to finally bring the dress home. (the wedding is less than a week away at this point) I paid as fast as I could and hoped to never return again. She did give me a discount, but it was off a higher amount than I had originally been quoted and was not nearly enough for all the trouble I had been though IMO. Well, I did end up having to return because the woman didn't sew the pleats correctly on the front of my dress!!! See photo, it was completely unsymmetrical. I was looking for a refund at that point because I didn't even trust her seamstress abilities anymore. She proceeded to completely gaslight me, saying "that's how it was when you brought it in" and "I remember thinking it was weird while I was altering it." I left without a refund because I was way too stressed and emotionally drained with my wedding now being just a few days away. I looked up the product photos online, confirmed she was lying, dusted off my sewing machine and fixed the damn dress myself. Mostly just so I could sell it after the wedding, I had decided not to wear it because the way she altered the top was very unflattering on my smaller chest. Overall, it was a super messed up experience. I truly don't understand how they have so many decent reviews. Save yourself the heartache and do not trust this shop. read more

I needed a dress hemmed and cups added in less than a week and they did it with ease. I was stress free after visiting. I dropped a dress off to be hemmed and asked to pick it up one week later. When I got there the next week, they had not yet started on my dress. She unapologetically told me that she checked and double checked the rack and had not seen my dress, though it was clearly ticketed for the pickup date I requested. Fortunately she was able to do it that night and I picked it up the next morning, but I no longer trust their service to be timely. read more

I don't care how much of a master tailor you are if you don't bother showing up for work... Called and they told me they open at 8a. Got there at 8:15 and they're closed, sign on the door says that they actually open at 9a. Ugh. So I bike off to work and leave mid day to ride back over to Union Square only to find that although the sign on the door says open and it's 3:15p, there is no one there and the door is locked. Imagine I would have even more peeved if I'd driven around in circles looking for parking (as is apt to happen in Union Square) only to arrive to an orange OPEN sign and a locked door. They wasted my time and lost a customer. A very short customer, who would have brought them lots of pants for hemming... I won't bother with this place again. read more

I had a very positive experience at G&T. I needed to get have a bridesmaid dress taken in and hemmed. The dress was rather complicated because the bodice was ribbed and there were layers of skirt to hem. After receiving a ridiculous quote from another tailor, I called around and discovered that the going rate for a job like this was closer to $70-$80. Dirce confirmed a price within that range and I arranged to come in for a fitting. She quickly took my measurements. It was a very pleasant experience. Dirce gave me a reasonable time-frame for completion, which she maintained (I believe the dress was ready in about a week). I was also able to pay by check. I would certainly recommend G&T for a similar job and suspect it will be my go-to place should I need another dress altered. read more

I had two really nice dresses fixed by the owner, Dirce, and she did such a great job. It looks like it haven't been fixed... And the amazing part was the price, I paid a HALF PRICE of the other two places I went to. (Arlington and Lexington) . I was glad I didn't have it done in one of this two places. Germano is a "master tailor." Well, I am not completely in the know about what that means, but photos on the wall indicate he did some tailoring when Tiger Woods was around at a golf tournament, and he's done wonders with the items I've brought in. One was a sleeveless linen drop waisted sack dress (think late 80's, yes I hang on to stuff too long) and he turned it into a versatile number that I can wear to work with a little heels and a cardigan or to the beach in flip flops. They are amazing (at least for bridesmaid dresses - I can't speak to anything else)! The first time I went here, they took in and re-beaded a dress in a week and you couldn't tell it had been altered at all...but it's the second time I used G&T that they really won my heart: from start to finish, everything about my bridesmaid dress was a disaster (the store insisted on order it four sizes too big and when I took it to a tailor to fix [I didn't think I could make it to G&T during business hours], it came back with a crooked bust line, frayed hemline, and was still far too big because that tailor said it was a "hard job"). So I call G&T on the Thursday afternoon before Columbus Day weekend (which is apparently one of the most popular weekends for weddings) and the wedding is on Sunday. The woman on the phone tells me not to worry and to come in after work with my dress (they were closed but still working so I just had to knock). The lovely woman in the back comes out and pins me up as the other woman translates to me that the dress had been butchered but they promise to have the dress ready on Saturday. Before I leave, the woman that speaks English tells me that she is bringing in her friends (presumably also seamstresses) to work around the clock because there were so many dresses needed for the weekend. She tells me that the women "need their dresses" and hey will do what it takes to get all of them done. She wasn't saying to make me feel bad at all - it was more just letting me know that even though they were busy (there were dresses hanging all over the store with pins in various places), I shouldn't worry. Low and behold, Saturday rolls around and the dress is ready. The dress isn't perfect but it's wearable/presentable (mostly just felt a little weird in some places but looked fine in pictures) and given the fact that they had two days to essentially remake the dress (I guess the other tailor had ruined the boning and it had to be replaced), I felt like it was a miracle. The only thing I could possibly complain about is that I was supposed to pick it up at 3pm and it wasn't ready until 5pm but I still got the dress with 24 hours to spare before the ceremony and they had told me to call before coming down to pick it up so I didn't even waste a trip...and I am SO not complaining about because I got the dress - that's all that mattered to me. The cherry on top of all this was that it only cost me $75 (rush fee included)...that's HALF of what I paid the other woman to destroy my dress. After this long review, you can probably tell that I highly recommend G&T - hopefully none of you have to experience something like I did but if you do, G&T is a tailor you can trust to get the job done well when you really need it! read more

I had gone to G & T to have a basic hemming done on a black maxi dress that was a bit too long. When I went to pick up the dress two days after the ready date, I was told they accidentally gave my dress to someone else, without checking if they had the receipt (which I brought with me). Why even bother running a business that uses a ticket system if you're not going to put it into practice?! Goodbye, dress. read more

Pro - local family business. quick turn around Con- no receipts, no tags, no signoffs, cash only. my bf dropped off 2 suits, i went to pick them up and they told me he only dropped off 1 (had they have an order history of some kind of documentation, this would have been mitigated.) they told me he only got 1 suit and it turns out (when we are already in NY for a wedding) it's not even HIS! they are very nice people, but very unorganized. Also, their craftmanship is not that good either when it comes to tailoring a suit. I would trust them for hemming and little things, but i wouldn't take your $500 suit there for full alterations... read more

I would NOT recommend this place for tailoring at all!!! First when I went to pick up the two pairs of pants I needed Hemmed they gave one right pair and one wrong pair. I called the woman and she said she had a few gray pants that might be mine. This lead me to think she must lose peoples pants a lot. I went back to the place and was able to find my pants. Two weeks later the hem came out of one leg of my pants. They had not even been washed yet! Chose another place if you can!!! Do not go here! read more

I needed a bridesmaid dress tailored in under a week, after losing around ten pounds while traveling. I dropped off the dress on Monday and picked it up Friday morning. They were really understanding of the tight time frame and friendly. The tailoring was well done (after a bad experience with the previous tailor who had it looser than normal and said it'd be perfect with a belt). It was pretty affordable to take it down significantly ($50). read more

I used to be a repeat customer for alterations such as hemming pants, fixing buttons, etc. When I decided to have custom skirts made for my bridesmaids (and me), I sent one of them to have her measurements taken. The owner agreed, but did such a distracted, poor job measuring *over clothes* that my friend has to have her skirt significantly altered. To add to this saga, in the meantime my fiance had his measurements taken by her (to order some pants). However, he knew half his measurements, and she was off by 6 inches on his waist! And 1.5 inches on his neck! This type of behavior is not conducive to business. I will be getting my own measurements redone. Collectively, we would have been happy to pay her for measurements done well, if she took longer than two seconds to consider it. Lesson learned, and we won't be back for measurements or any future alterations. read more

She did an excellent job altering a lined, long plaid wool skirt for me from a size 14 to a 6, with a hidden side zipper and the plaid on the bias. I took the skirt to a tailor first, who told me he couldn't do it and advised me to look for a seamstress who would take in both sides of the skirt and not just one. She did this, and the skirt follows the curve of my hips, and the corners on the plaid are all matched up nicely along the seam, and the side zipper lies perfectly flat too. If you are a woman looking to have a dress altered to fit your curves just right, this is where you want to go. I intend to take a pile of other stuff here. read more
