    The new hem
    Adrienne B.

I dropped off three dresses and two pairs of pants. One pair of pants was great (hem) and one dress was great (take in). One dress was taken in and the straps were shortened, and the straps got way over-shortened, so the dress now sits up in my armpits. This is a designer dress from overseas, so I'm fairly upset. The third dress needed hook and eye attachments between two sets of buttons. The eyes sewn on were laughably bad, leaving the dress gaping just as much as before. I've seen the reviews, so I didn't want to leave my dress again. I fixed it myself well enough. The second pair of pants was okay--shorter than expected--except that I paid extra for the original hem to be maintained, and it wasn't. The reviews are right. Go somewhere else. They're very nice, but they charge an exorbitant amount for the work done and you pay up front, not knowing what mistakes you will get.

Dressing room area where you can have your clothes fitted and you can view from all angles.

I love newbury tailoring! The staff is friendly, it's a family business, and they are always professional. My clothes always look amazing when I have work done here and things fit so well. It makes sense that all the celebrities and high profile clients in Boston come to this tailor. The reviews are a little surprising, because I certainly have never had a bad experience here.

Here are bulleted things to know before bringing clothes here for tailoring: 1. They will be behind schedule for whatever date they give you for alterations mine was literally 30 days behind the original date I was given as well as almost twice as expensive 2. They will not do the request correctly which will result in multiple fittings 3. They will text you sporadically to tell you they are behind schedule or miscalculated the cost they quoted you because they are unable to deal with customers appropriately. They will only let you know they are running late or misquoted one day before you are supposed to get your garments back 4. They will not answer the phone or return phone calls and not apologize for inconveniencing you when you go there because you couldn't get ahold of anyone for an update 5. If your alterations are more than a hem, plan for them to run one month behind the date the quoted you. Do not expect an apology when late 6. Do not bother to tell them you are upset with their customer service because the woman running the shop will only give you excuses rather than any type of sincere explanation 7. They will offer to deliver your clothes within boston if you have to go 5 times for fittings of an incorrect alteration. They will leave your clothes in the common area of your building where other tenants can take them, and text you with no warning instead of calling and arranging to hand you the garments when you are home to receive them If you are ok with all of the above and have time and patience to deal with this, they do an ok job once they finally actually do the alterations you requested

I never write reviews, and I hate to complain about people's business, but I feel compelled to share because this was such a terrible experience I'd hate for you to have a similar one. When I picked up my clothing, not only had 3 of my items not been altered at all, but they messed up my bathing suit. Carlos agreed and apologized asking me to come back in a few days so they could fix the items for free. When I went back, I was shocked to see they didn't fix the things, but made them worse. They put a button in the wrong spot on the pants and used some random button with white font on it instead of something discreet. They took the zipper out of the other pair, but then didn't close the top properly - instead threds are loose and if you pull one, the stitches unravel. The bathing suit was even worse - not only did they make the cup fabric ripple, but they reattached the straps in two different ways so now the cup flares out and is not stable. Carlos and the front staff agreed the work was low quality and said a manager would call to refund me. I spoke with the manager Sonya today and asked for my money back for those 3 items. At first she seemed nice, but quickly she began to argue with me about a refund. She told me she's going through personal things and that she has "more important issues to deal with than this" and hung up on me. Then she called me back and agreed to refund some of the items, but upon sending me the receipt, I saw that they charged me to "fix" the items that they messed up!! For example, to remove the zipper and stitch up the pants was supposed to be $38 total, but then they secretly added an additional $18 to "close the pants at the top." In fact, Carlos confirmed there would be no additional charges because they messed them up. So instead of refunding me in full, Sonya only gave me the $18 back and said the $38 was because they removed the zipper "even though we did not close the pants at the top." What kind of alteration business would ever dream of charging you for pants that they never finished??? Moreover, this was the second mistake - the first was they didn't alter them the first time around. I told Sonya that this is bad business and that I wanted to talk with Carlos because I know he'd vouch for me about the pants, but she said "thanks for telling me about business; then go somewhere else" and hung up on me again and stopped answering the phone. When I looked through the receipt closer, the amount charged does not correspond with what I was told in person for some of the items - for example, $35.78 for darting the bust of a blouse - I was told that would be $15/20 max, but because I had so many items, I just agreed to the full price and they never gave me a breakdown in writing so I didn't see they were upcharging me. That's my own fault. Bottom line, the work is low quality, the manager was incredibly unprofessional and rude, they lie about how much they're charging you, and if they mess something up, they screw you over and don't do a good job fixing it. Even with personal things on her mind which I normally would have grace for, I've never had a manager be so unprofessional and unkind. I used to go to Newbury Tailoring when it was on Newbury St and they were great, but unfortunately their quality has dropped and they've become very unprofessional. Learn from my mistake and take your clothes elsewhere.

Don't waste your time and money here. There are better Tailors in Boston. It seems like this place has gone downhill over the years. After my last experience, I would not bring any luxury clothes or wedding dresses to this place to have altered unless you want your clothes botched. In June, I came in to have my Bandage dress tailored for a wedding. It was pretty basic work. I requested to see the owner Carlos since he worked on my clothes in the past. Boy was that a mistake. The dress was a little big so I asked him to shorten the sleeves and hem the bottom. My biggest gripe at the time was that it took two weeks for me to get my dress back. When I tried to inquire about it, the receptionist Sonya refused to let me speak to the owner, and would put me on hold for long periods so I would hang up. Then would pretend that she forgot that I was on the line when I called back. When I finally got my dress the first thing I did was speak to the owner Carlos to complain about the rude woman and her lack of customer service. I explained to him that if it wasn't for my long history coming to his tailor, I would have given them a negative review. So I went to the event last summer, wore the dress and didn't notice anything amiss at the time. A few months later, I went to wear the dress again for another occasion (this would have been my second time wearing it) and noticed that one of the sleeves unraveled where the trailer stitched it. So, I called Newbury Tailoring to speak to Carlos and hear what he had to say since it was a dress worth a thousand dollars and the screw up was on their end. When I called, a man answered and said Carlos was there and that he would put him on the line. Then Sonya answered and she was already on defense mode. She stated that they would not fix the sleeve for free because it had been a few months. I asked her to let me speak to Carlos so he could make the decision on what he thought was best for the dress. She went on to tell me that she makes the decisions their. Then texted me and said that she did not want me to return. How convenient, botch someone's expensive dress thats been going there for years and then take zero accountability. Lucky for me thier are plenty of qualified white glove tailors in Boston. I would not recommend this tailor to anyone. It is poorly ran and the tailors do sub-par work. As for their customer service it's horrible and they do not value their customers.

Stain on my jumpsuit that happened after leaving my clothing in their hands.
    Brianna R.

It's a shame I have to give this place a low rating because they did a good job with the tailoring. I had dropped off a white jumpsuit for my rehearsal dinner and when I came back I noticed there was a yellowish stain on the front, that looks like a sweat stain. When I brought it to their attention they said no problem they could get it out. Fast forward to the next day when I went to go pick it up. They told me that they couldn't get it out and I had to get it dry cleaned. They did give me 10 dollars off for "all the back and forth" but told me they couldn't do anything about the stain. They said they only cover the cost when it happens in their store, which is did. This is a brand new item with the tags still on it. They told me that "someone probably just sweat when they wore it" which isn't possible because it's never been worn before. Very disappointing experience and I will never be back nor will I recommend their services. If you damage an item you should cover the cost to repair or replace. On top of everything it's very pricy, so I was shocked by the horrible customer service i received.

Standing in the rain with new suits.

Unprofessional. I made a 9 AM appointment and was left standing in the rain for 35 minutes. When I called later I was told sometimes, Carlos, doesnt make his appointments on time. Do not bring your business to such a sloppy shop.

Plan was for 1st shirt to come, confirm my size and fit, and then they'd make 2nd shirt. - May: email from Michael that they had issues w/ their Shanghai team (that's where the clothes are made) - clothing production delayed until mid-June (estimated). - Some other time in May '22: without my knowledge, my wife added a vest to my order as a surprise. - Late June: 1st shirt arrives, and vest came separately (in error - was supposed to come after confirming my fit). Both items were incredibly small/tight - like spandex. And I'm a slim guy. Michael says they'll redo the shirt from scratch, but that I need to bring in the vest so they can alter in Boston. Here's where things fall apart in July and August: - My wife works in walking distance to their Boston location (the only one left), so planned to drop off the vest herself, instead of going through the mail. - Vest return attempt #1: Michael said she could drop off, "any time after 11am". She goes there at 1pm - no one was there. Michael said, "sorry about that, it's just me today and I was out at our tailor's". IMO, if you tell someone to come in any time after 11am, and you end up leaving, you should let them know. It was a careless mistake, but I let it go. - In parallel, the "1st shirt" arrives for the 2nd time: wrong style (french instead of placket) and again, way too tight. I'm slim, but this shirt makes my stomach look chubby. Michael asks over email if it's supposed to be a dress shirt or casual shirt (regarding tucking-in). Great question... that should have been asked in April. Lucky for him, I'm an educated buyer, so I did intend to buy a custom dress shirt (like the one they are attempting to make). - Vest return attempt #2: I'm losing trust in Michael at this point, so I asked specifically what days and times he will be there the next week, and for a phone number to call in advance to make sure someone is in fact there. He assured me that people would be there until 5:45pm. I called several times at 5pm so my wife could get there before 5:45pm - no one answered the number he gave me. - Vest return attempt #3: Michael emailed: "with enough advanced notice... we'll be good!" and "5pm is a safe bet on Monday". So on that Monday, I emailed at 1:42pm asking if my wife could come in at 3:30pm-ish and called several times again - no response/answer. So, she went there at 5pm (the "safe bet") and again, no one was there (another customer was trying to return something, too). - Note: over several days and several phone calls, no one answered the phone # that Michael gave me. - Vest return attempt #4: By this point, I canceled both shirts - I thought they were not worth the time and effort. I planned one more attempt on the vest (only because my wife got it for me as a gift - so wanted to appreciate it). I emailed Michael: "How about Wed 8/10 or Thu 8/11 at 9am?" He replied: "I'll be here every day at 5:00, Wednesday and Thursday both days until at least 6:00!" - I gave up. It was clear he was incapable of scheduling a simple drop off. I call the phone number 3-4 times in a row, Michael finally picks up. He said if I gave him a specific day and time, he could make it work - I explained I just tried that via email - the "Wed 8/10 or Thu 8/11 at 9am" ask - and he responded with unrelated days and times. Michael agreed to refund me for the two shirts, and refund my wife for the vest before he hung up on me. - Since he hung up, I did confirm refund via email - he confirmed quickly. - I will never go to Blank Label again. - Outside of getting the clothes to fit - the style was OK and quality was below average. - My suggestions: buy from Suitsupply (custom), Club Monaco, Bonobos, Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, etc. - certainly not Blank Label. - Prediction: Blank Label will be out of business by the end of 2023.
