I had 2 pairs to Applebottom jeans that need to be hemmed...oh I wish! ok, so I had 2 pairs of Se7ens jeans that needed to be hemmed to my short legs, damn it for being only 5'2"! went in there one weekend day and it was pretty busy. took a few minutes before I was serviced but it gave me a little time to look around and check out the action figures in the cases. pretty neat! finally, in the dressing room and Carlos measured me out. You have the option ( ladies) of hemming them for flats or heels. I opted for heels since I wanted the hem to be a little longer. They even have different heels size to fit your preference. 3 inches, ok. It was a quick mark out of the chalk and I was done. Come back mid week. then the day finally came, I was getting my jeans back. I tried them on and they were prefect! The jeans looked like they have never been cut, its amazing! Original hem and all! $25 for each pair..soo worth it for the quality and perfection of work. Will def come back here for my other pants. read more

To make a long story short, this is why I will never return to Newbury Tailors: I dropped off two Burberry Coats, a fur cashmere coat and a trench worth about $3K total. The coat - they promised and charged me for taking in, hemming and reinforcing buttons. Did not deliver on time and did not reinforce the buttons. The trench - also forgot to reinforce the buttons, did not deliver on time and they LOST the sash. After a week long stress fight of much confusion over this stupid belt they found it on someone else's desk. NICE. Did not offer any sort of compensation, discount, or solution. They also insisted at one point I was wrong and never brought the sash in w the trench. Terrible. read more

They are amazing tailors with great customer service. I had my bridesmaid dress hemmed and they were able to rush it in a week. I forgot they close at 4pm and realized at 5pm that I needed to pick up my dress, and I had a flight the next day at 9am (before they open). They came back to the store that night and let me pick up my dress after hours. They are so nice and easily worth the cost. The dress looked amazing, too! read more

BE CAUTIOUS about tailoring your WEDDING DRESS here. My review is long since I want to detail all 9 fittings. This place gets 2 stars because my wedding dress in the end came out great but there was so much stress & time wasted to get to that point. I think the workmanship is amazing (my dress ended up being tailored very well & I'm very pleased with it) but the communication was severely lacking on their end and they should have done a much better job at scheduling my fittings and communicating when they were actually going to work on the dress. I brought my wedding dress to be altered here on the recommendation of the boutique store where I bought my wedding dress. I had 2 alterations that needed to be made: adjusting the straps and shortening the length of the dress. In sum, I had NINE dress fittings for what should have been mostly simple alterations, given that my dress had no beading (except for the shoulder straps) and no lace. The first 2 fittings were completely fine. I picked up my dress from the boutique store in early Oct and brought it directly to the tailor that day. I was very pleased with how the strap alterations came out because there was very delicate beading that need to be adjusted and re-sewed in order to alter and shorten the straps. At the 2nd fitting in Dec, he asked me how short I wanted my dress to be altered. He measured & pinned the bottom of the dress & said he would cut it and then we would have another fitting to make sure everything was okay. At this point, I was very pleased with the work done thus far. For the 3rd fitting in Feb, it was clearly TOO SHORT & UNEVEN. Not only that, the 3 layers of the dress (tulle overlay and 2 layers of organza) were also completely uneven with one another. I would have been fine if it wasn't that noticeable, but it was horrendously noticeable. I pointed this out to the tailor & he said he would have the layers even & lengthen the dress so it was floor length at the next fitting. At the 4th fitting in mid-Feb, the dress was completely UNCHANGED. It was clear that no work had been done. This was extremely frustrating given that they said it would be fixed. My bridesmaid actually took the measuring tape to measure out what the exact length of the dress should be & she also commented on how uneven and short the dress looked. We decided with the tailor that the length should be 42" even. I was unhappy I had to schedule yet another fitting but was assured the dress would be ready next time. At the 5th (early Mar) & 6th (late Apr) fittings, the dress AGAIN was COMPLETELY UNCHANGED. They insisted that work had been done on the dress & the length was now longer. Ok fine, but then we took out the measuring tape & showed the tailor that parts of the dress was either 40" or 41" in length & clearly not the 42" we agreed upon. At the 6th fitting, when they claimed again they had worked on the dress, they had the audacity to say I was slouching which was why the dress was uneven. I was frustrated by the fact that I had come in 3 EXTRA fittings (over a span of 3 MONTHS) when no work was done at all. I'd rather they tell me they hadn't worked on it blaming me that I was slouching! Before the 7th fitting (early May), I called 2 days prior to confirm the dress was 42" in length or I wouldn't come in. They assured me the dress was 42" long. This time the dress is TOO LONG. It had been increased to 43" in some parts and 44" in other parts and the 3 layers were STILL UNEVEN. Not only that, they had added extra tulle underneath the original tulle overlay & it was clearly visible and UNEVEN. Immediately after this fitting, I called the boutique,extremely panicked and ready to bring my dress to a new tailor. The person I bought my dress from said she would come to my next fitting & help me with my concerns. She was surprised by my concerns & said that they've never had any problems with this tailor. She was the saving grace for my dress! At the 8th dress fitting (late May) with the lady from the boutique store, the dress was still long. They did remove the extra tulle they had added last time. My bridesmaid suggested that the back of the dress could be longer but I was concerned about asking the tailor to do such a "complicated" alteration of having the front of the dress go from 42" gradually to 43" in the back. At the 9th fitting (mid-June), the dress was perfect. The correct length and according to what I had specificed (42" in the front with a gradual increase to 43" in the back). The 3 layers were even with one another. It was clear to me that the they could could have could have done this work before & saved me the time of coming to several fittings. Given the back & forth, they discounted me $50 for it but I think it could have been more. But, I am happy with how my dress turned out with 3 weeks until the wedding. In sum, be cautious about tailoring your wedding dress here & be willing to wait until the very end for alterations to be made. read more

I've never used a tailor before, and so I was very nervous looking for one. Not only am I new to the area, but new to tailoring as well! After reading the reviews on Yelp, and being told that Newbury St (although sometimes more expensive) the quality is good, I decided to give these guys a try. I took my maid of honor dress to them, and everyone was SO nice. While I was trying my dress on, everyone that came in was a repeat customer. (Sigh of relief #1). When I stood on the little box and had the tailor talk to me about what I wanted he seemed to really know what he was doing. (Sigh of relief #2). When I left my dress, I asked about how much they thought it would cost. They couldn't give me an exact price, but told me around $55. (I was guesstimating it would be about $50, but really had no clue how much these things cost - but it was less than I was quoted from where I purchased the dress - and it was going to take a LOT less time to get it done). They had my dress done in about a week, and when I went to pick it up, I was really happy with the way it fit. (Sign of relief #3). When I went to pay for it, he told me $65. I guess I made a face of a bit of sticker shock, because he asked if everything was okay. I said it was, but I was a little shocked because the woman had told me it would be around $55, but she didn't give me an exact quote. He only changed me the $55 which I thought was great customer service - didn't try to explain anything, didn't try to justify the extra $10, just gave me the lower cost. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a tailor, and should I need anything done in the future, I will for sure be back! read more

I have never been so disappointed in a tailor in my life! Just terrible! I recently brought 3 pairs of jeans to be taken up, with a European hem. Unfortunately, all 3 pairs were mishandled and terribly tailored. One pair had one leg longer than the other, one was an entire inch too short, and the third-well I can't even talk about it. For the prices they are charging, they should consider getting their employees some real seamstress training! Over $60 for 3 pairs of heans, and it took over 2 weeks! I'm not a seamstress so I don't know what can be done and what can't be done with a dress, but I guess I expected more attention to detail than what I got. I brought in 2 dresses to get alterations. The tailor appeared to know what he was talking about and he was friendly, honest, and professional. When I got the first dress back, it fit well-- the alterations were done to my measurements. When I got home to press the dress though, I noticed that the seam did not match up on one side of the dress. The dress was made of up 3 different colors of the same material, which flowed vertically. The triangular cup of one side did not align with the color below the cup seam (like a jagged line). It was hardly noticeable, but I did, especially when the other cup was done perfect. For the second dress, the seam at the waist had to be adjusted. The entire dress was made of the same material. The upper part of the dress had a design (there was a fold kind of like a ruffle) to it that made the material thicker. When the alterations were done, the material of the upper part of the dress was folded up (instead of being hemmed) so that it formed a thickness twice of what it should have been. I noticed the bulge immediately. Luckily, the dress came with a belt that covered the bulge and horrible seam. The total for the alterations was $95. I rather pay an extra $50 to get a dress altered so that it fits than let the dress sit in my closet never to be worn. I don't regret getting the alterations done here cause I have seen worse jobs (don't ever get your jeans hemmed at the dry cleaners!!!). I just hoped that the quality of work would have been better, especially being on Newbury St. The turnaround of the dresses was pretty quick. I needed one the following week and they were able to do the alterations in one week (the usual turnaround time is at least 2 weeks). read more

Don't bring your wedding dress here, they will promise you the world and not deliver. I admit I have a complicated wedding dress, multiple layers with a top layer of delicate lace and beading. I brought my wedding dress here to have some changes made to the bodice and to have it bustled. The guys who work here are very nice but the work was awful. I had 4 fittings when work that could have been done in 2. - Once I came back to see bright white tulle had been added behind cream lace ( the entire dress was ivory). - I brought it home after my final fitting, stupidly not trying it on one more time at their store, my bustled dress was uneven and still too long. There was also a lovely gunmetal clasp used on the Ivory lace at the bottom of my dress, which looked awful. (this was 4 days before my wedding) - I also found out from the tailor that saved my dress (see below) that the dress needed to be pressed, Newbury only steamed it and never suggested pressing it, once properly pressed the dress looked far better. Every time I went to these guys I would leave thinking we were on the same page, they continued telling me that everything could be done and I came back a month later to things not done correctly or not done at all. On top of that I had these guys make a pair of my jeans skinny, I wore them on the plane en route to my honeymoon and the seam busted open at my knee an hour into the flight. The customer service was great but once I got my dress back and it still didn't look right, I felt like I was rushed along. Other people in the wedding party paid half the price (obviously went somewhere else) and got better alterations done. Went to Newbury on the advice of a friend and fellow Yelper, and could not have been happier. I was in need of a job that simply could not be messed up- the dress was a special order that I couldn't return and I was under a super-tight deadline. The whole team at Newbury made me feel at ease, so I wasn't too surprised that when I went to pick it up I found that they had done an impeccable job (on time, I might add)! To be honest it was slightly pricey- $70 for shortening the halter and skirt- but I would gladly pay it again to be assured that the job would be done perfectly. So is any one tailor better than any other? I really wouldn't have thought so...sure, I won't have my dry cleaners hem up designer jeans, but the tailors at Saks and the like have to be on par with everyone else. I mean, it's not as if I'm getting custom-made suits. But after having tried the competition, I'm convinced that these guys do something special when they reattach the original hems on jeans. They use some sort of twist or turnover so the stitching is less obvious and they always look fantastic! Oh, and I have no idea what everyone else is complaining about with their customer service...they completely altered a tux for me in an afternoon once. Wedding dresses - just go here. Don't be deterred by the fact that it's a "wedding dress" and it's "newbury street" and it's "newbury tailoring" - you're not going to spend a million dollars. Might spend a lot, but it is WELL worth it. I hate nothing more than shopping for formal dresses, and my body does not lend itself to fitting into any dress size (large rib cage, fairly broad shoulders, narrow hips, pretty small legs) - I cried when I left from my first appointment because my dress looked too tight and also dumpy at the same time. Dress had a ton of beading, boning, lace, and embroidery, and I don't know what they did but I just left my final appointment and it fits perfectly. They listen to you but they also just know what to do. AND they're so nice. Zero pretentiousness, zero judgment, they're just awesome. Never going anywhere else. read more

Thank you Newbury Tailoring Co! You truly are a savior to all petite girls who want to wear overpriced designer jeans without dragging them through the dirt. Until the makers of said jeans smarten up and realize that most girls are not 6 feet tall with 36" inseams, this tailor will be in business big time. I came here with my too long jeans solely based on what I had read on Yelp (so many thanks, and many useful, funny, and cools to all previous reviewers). They were quick and right to the point. Did I want to wear them with heels or flats? Bing bang boom. In five minutes I was in and out and told to come back in a week. The results were impeccable. You absolutely cannot tell that anything was done to these jeans. Original hem intact (which was important to me especially because the hem had these two cool different colored threads in it) and the perfect length with the excess fabric gone. My once pretty much unwearable jeans (except with maybe 5 inch heels...ha) are now one of my favorite most perfect pairs. Yes it costs $25 and you can think that is expensive but then I probably wouldn't come here to hem my Hollister jeans I got on sale at TJMaxx for $20. If you already spent over $100 on the damn jeans in the first place, $25 more to get them JUST right is a bargain. read more

Newbury Tailoring has enabled me to make up wonderful excuses for buying not-in-their-best-shape dresses or super steals off the clearance rack. In fact, I think Newbury Tailoring is actually an enabler for my TJMaxx hunting habit. I found a Badgley Mishka evening gown, three sizes too big, with some ribbed lace in the skirt, at TJMaxx on super clearance. I don't really have an occasion for it other than the excuse that someday I might need a ballgown. Thanks to Newbury Tailoring doing some work for me on another lace dress that I had bought at TJMaxx the summer before, I knew lace wasn't necessarily a daunting (nor prohibitively expensive) task. So I took the dress to Newbury Tailoring. I walked out a week later with the dress hemmed, the bodice and body taken in a few sizes, and the lace mended. I actually didn't get a chance to try it on to confirm that the alterations were perfect (but they are). It cost about $100. I now have a Badgley Mishka ballgown for under $200. Which makes me a very happy camper. And leaves me a little extra to find a lovely pair of shoes, right? read more

My husband and I have used Newbury Tailoring Co. for the past 5 years. They are the only tailor in Boston that I would trust with my nicest clothes, including my $1500 Maxmara suit and a $900 Chanel shirt. I always know they will take care of my clothes and have no fear of them losing them or finding anything wrong. Not only are they very reliable, but they are extremely knowledgable about material quality and fit. Whenever my husband purchases a ready-to-wear suit, we always take it to Newbury Tailoring to get their advice on whether they think the suit is a good fit and the material is good quality. Based on their opinion, we once returned a suit my husband had gotten on sale at Filene's basement and instead tailored my husband's existing suit, which they thought was actually of better quality and was still in style. This ended up saving us a couple hundred dollars. Although some people complain about the prices, I believe $20 for a pant hem that is always done correctly is a fair price. Plus every time I go, I am extremely satisfied with the service. I have recommended them to many of my friends. read more

Prices are a little steep, but quality and service are impeccable. This is a truly hardworking family business. I came here with my wedding dress, wanting to have the train removed, straps added, and dress taken in/fit properly. Carlos was lovely to work with and made it look amazing! He was able to make straps from the leftover lace that matched perfectly and looked as if they had always been part of the garment. He was even kind patient when I returned to have the bust taken in- a week after I'd asked to have it taken out- and in a rush! Walter and Sophia were understanding and accommodating with my last minute requests to change appointment times, and always friendly. I've worn uniforms or scrubs for most of my life, and am not always the most comfortable in fancy, girly, clothes. They were my miracle workers when I needed some major work done on a bridesmaid dress. The bride made us order them one year in advance, a year during which I experienced two serious deaths of people close to me--needless to say, the dress didn't fit as it should have 11 months later and needed to be taken out. The first tailor I went to (Benny Ho in Brookline) said he didn't do that kind of work and sent me into a panic over what I would tell the bride. Newbury Tailors didn't even flinch when I brought my dress in and said what I needed done. Twelve days and two fittings later, it fit perfectly; you can't even tell what work it had. The only reason I gave four stars was that the payment process felt a bit dicey. I had asked for a quote when I brought it in and was told it would be $120-$130. When I picked it up, the girl said it would be $160. I realize an estimate is just that, but when I reminded her of it, she charged me $130 without question. Made me wonder if they bumped up the pricing just to see if I would pay it, even though the girl was extremely nice about it. read more

Like another poster's review, I too lost a lot of weight last year. I was torn between buying a whole new wardrobe (ideal, but not very practical as we were buying a house last year also), and having some key pieces tailored. I initially took 3 pairs of pants in, to be taken in 2+ sizes each. When I went back to pick them up, I was more than pleased with the results. They fit me perfectly! I just brought in 2 dresses today, and will update this review when I pick them up. They're for 2 weddings I have this summer, one is my maid of honor dress for my sister's wedding. Personally I wasn't crazy about their solution to repairing the cuffs on a pair of selvage denim that I brought in. They glued fabric to the jeans and then re-structured the tears with stitching. The result was fine but resulted in a repair that is very noticeable and a bit messy looking. In hindsight I would much rather have had them darned by one of the numerous mail-in denim repair services that can be found online. Everything else they have done for me has been perfect. I got a button sewn on while I waited at no charge. I've had a blazer, a shirt, and pants taken in here and the work was performed exactly as I wanted. 5 stars for customer service!! My friend, who was homeless until recently, had his mother pass away this weekend and he has nothing to wear to the funeral, and no money to buy anything. I told him I would take care of finding him clothing but I had no idea what size he was, and neither did he. Some other tailors in the area were quoting $25 to take measurements. I called Newbury Tailoring, expecting to have to plead my case to request a reduced price or free measurement - turns out, they are free for everyone!! Everyone was incredibly friendly, the man taking the measurements was careful and precise, and I can't thank them enough!!! read more

Arrived to pickup my suit and shirt 2 days before my wedding. My feet could not fit through the pant holes and they had mistakenly (somehow) cut the sleeves off my dress shirt and turned it into a shirt sleeve shirt. While they ended up fixing everything, and covered the cost of a new shirt, when I came back the next day they charged me for minor sleeve alterations. Would have expected them to waive this nominal cost ($45) for the insane headache they caused. For that reason, I cannot recommend. read more

I decided to bring my 2 new pairs of jeans here after reading what other Yelpers had to say and I have to admit, they were good. I had my doubts as I walked up the creaky staircase on a hot and humid August day. I really wasn't sure what to expect when I walked into the shop and saw all this comic paraphenalia encased behind glass. I came out of the changing room and told the guy what I wanted, he measured the hem, and after 2 quick chalk marks, I was done. They keep the original hem and each pair cost $25. That's not bad considering I would have done a HORRIBLE job on them. I got them two days later and they did a fantastic job. To some, $25 might be a little much, but if you spend money on designer jeans, you might as well spend a little more to have them fit properly and not drag on the ground while you walk. Just a thought. I inquired about alterations of dresses, and it was a lot more, I think it was somewhere in the neighborhood of like $50-100, dependent on if there was lining in the dress. So I would probably go somewhere else to get dresses fitted/hemmed. But you can't beat the price for pants/jeans here. Service was impeccable. They were friendly, outgoing. I just feel bad for those doing the alterations--it literally was a SWEAT SHOP during the summer when I went in. But I will definitely be back! read more

I honestly don't mind shelling out the cash for the superb work done here. Of course, you may have to delay a few alterations for awhile due to the cost, but you'll have a dress, pair of jeans, suit, whatever--that will look like BUTTAH on you. It helps that the staff is pretty friendly. I remember one time when I picked up a pair of jeans close to closing time, I spoke with one of the guys still there. I think I mentioned something random about my friend Rebecca being from Guatemala, and he told me he was also from there. Then he told me if I ever wanted to visit, he'd hook me up with his friends there who would take care of me. WEIRD, but I loved my newly hemmed jeans, so ok. hahaha read more

I'm visiting from San Diego on a cold March day. Naturally, the winter coat that I wear maybe once every four years suddenly has a BROKEN ZIPPER. Ugh! I google "tailors near me"and find Newbury Tailoring right up the street. These guys were AMAZING. They took pity on this SoCali tourist and fixed my coat that afternoon with no rush charge so I could enjoy the remainder of my trip. But that's not all. They also fixed a tattered trim that ran up the length of my coat (and looked really ratty) --without being asked--and without charging me. Had a really disappointing customer service experience recently. My husband and I have been customers for a number of years and always received great customer service from Walter and excellent tailoring. Within the past two weeks we spent $400 on a number of pants and shorts. Unfortunately the hemming on one pair of pants was uneven and another item needed adjustment. Upon arriving we were greeted by a new associate at the counter. I let her know what I needed and was asked if I had a receipt. I didn't, nor have I ever been asked for one when adjusting items I the past. I was informed that they had a new system by one of the managers and asked for my last name. With their new system they had no sales history and informed me that they couldn't verify when my order was picked up. I informed her it was within the last two weeks (ish). She said that I would have to pay for part of the adjustment work since it was past their two week period which adjustments can be made. I was also informed there was a new policy that customers must try on clothes upon picking them up. I let her know that my husband had picked our clothes up and that it seemed absurd to ask a customer to pay to correct pants that were hemmed unevenly. She told me there were a number of factors, such as washing, dry cleaning. I let her know the pants had been washed prior to tailoring and hadn't been washed after picking them up. She didn't have much of a response but was insistent I would have to pay to have the tailoring corrected. We've spent several thousand dollars here on numerous suits, pants, our wedding tuxedos, and referred several friends to the tailor too. The work has always been great but this customer service was terrible. As a business owner myself, If I couldn't verify when an order was collected, I certainly wouldn't assume a customer was lying. If work was done incorrectly, I wouldn't ask a customer pay to have it corrected. It is also contradictory to provide a two week period in which tailoring can be adjusted, yet also require customers to try on belongings at pick up. Sadly had Walter been present today I'm sure there would have been a different outcome, but I can say with certainty I will never support Newbury Tailoring again. read more
