I brought a pair of expensive jeans to be hemmed with the original hem. He was very busy so he requested I leave them for two weeks, no problem! I could not believe what an amazing job he did on the hem, you literally cannot even see where he attached the original hem! They are perfect. If I could give a zero, I would!! The owner is extremely rude!! Verbatim he said "as a first time customer, I hope you never come back." Long story short, don't agree to a date & then not stick to it & over charge for a 3 week "rush job." I was traveling out of state for a wedding, it was not ready in time so a friend of mine had to pick it up & ship it to me. When I called to ask if it was ready, he wasn't even looking at the right dress & receipt saying he only charges $60. When he finally found my dress, he saw he charged me $250 and then got mad & blamed me for not having it done. DONT AGREE TO A DATE & HAVE ZERO FOLLOW UP. Terrible business ethic!!!! The owner of this business is extremely rude, very dismissive and a lier. He clearly has had some clients treat him poorly because he is on the defensive the minute you walk in the door. I have no idea if his work is good because he refused to help me on two separate occasions. They weren't complicated projects (hem a pair of jeans and fix a strap on a dress) so I can only assume he doesn't really know what he is doing. He said I accused him of not doing good work but how could I know his work if he hasn't done anything for me? I cannot understand how he has survived as a business owner without good customer relationships. I would NEVER EVER step foot in his shop again and hope that others take this advice. I do not recommend this tailor for any occasion at all. One of my friends had a bridesmaid's dress tailored here for a wedding and received below standard service while being charged an outrageous price for a dress that still didn't fit when she received it. When she first spoke to the owner he agreed to have her dress ready for Monday May 27th. When she called him on the 25th there was no answer and no response. When she heard back from him he claimed he was "sick" and continued to tell her he would not be open on the 27th for Memorial Day and that she should have known it was a holiday. She was flying out of Boston to California on Tuesday the 28th and he didn't even have her dress ready. Because I love my friends- I told her to get on her scheduled flight and I'd pick up her dress and have it shipped to her overnight. When I went to pick it up the owner didn't even say hi, and made snarky comments about her not getting it herself. She was already in California. As the owner he should have known when his business is open/closed for regular operation AND for holidays. If you are thinking of using this business for alterations you are a fool to put money in the pocket of this money grubbing dickhead. read more

I had two occasions to use a tailor during an 8 month stay in Boston. The first of which was for a bridesmaid dress, which I brought to this business. The cost of the tailoring was very expensive, more than the dress, but I chalked that up to the amount of work required and the neighborhood. I happily paid it. In the 3 week span of waiting for the bridesmaid dress, I brought in a small job - a fastener to adhere to a summer dress. When I inquired of the cost for this, the tailor became combative. Initially, "How much do you think it costs?" followed by a reluctant and sheepish "$10 or $20?" from me, was met with more aggression. "You think it costs $20 to put a snap on?" When I tried to defend my estimate by stating the other work had been very expensive, he became enraged and asked me if I was comparing the work. He was hostile and aggressive. Eventually, he started muttering in his native tongue, walked away into a back room, came out with his half eaten lunch, and sat down at a table to resume whatever he was doing before I (obviously) interrupted him. He left me standing at the counter. I can't comment on the quality of the work on the bridesmaid dress, as I haven't yet received it, but I have worked with numerous tailors and other small business owners over the years, and I have never encountered such combative antagonism In short, don't give this angry man your business. read more

I went there to see if I could have a garment altered. The tailor's manner was simply odd and off-putting, as if he wanted to persuade me to leave by staring silently at me. Finally, he asked to see the garment. I showed it to him, explaining that the waist was too big and that it needed to be hemmed. He quoted me a price that was actually three times what I paid for the garment. (Yes, THREE times more than than the original price. I'm not exaggerating.) I stammered that this was out of my price range. He smiled triumphantly, and said that I had my choice of many other tailors in the neighborhood. A strange, unpleasant, and somewhat disturbing exchange. I'd like to find a tailor who has decent manners and a professional ethic. read more

Celio, the brains and brawn behind the operation here, really is an expert at his trade--he is an excellent tailor. The quality of work is impeccable. I definitely do not have a build that lends itself easily to purchasing "off the rack" suits, making my alterations something a lesser tailor would have difficulty not screwing up. Not an issue with Celio. For instance, there were some inconsistencies and construction issues (i.e., sloppiness) with a custom suit I had had made for me by some dude in NYC. When I brought it to Celio, he easily identified the problems and thanks to his keen eye and careful & skillful tailoring, the suit now fits and looks 10 X better. Another time, he hemmed my Diesel jeans to the perfect height & 100% straight, retaining the original hem with color-matched stitching. It is pretty cool how Celio quickly sizes up a garment and details what needs to be fixed. Even better is the finished product. Pricing, particularly when you consider location and the consistently high quality of work put into making that suit look good on you, is beyond fair. Also, he's a great guy. No snob factor or scoldings for being a fashion noob, which for someone who works on some seriously high-end marques (Brioni, RLBL, Isaia), is refreshing. I recommend him to anyone needing quality tailoring. read more

Didn't even get my dress hemmed there but when I walked in the man seemed immediately bothered by me asking for a quote. The quote I got was overpriced and he just told me if I wanted to go somewhere else then I could but "wouldn't find a better price elsewhere". Back Bay Tailors was recently opened in the Vendome building by Celio Franca (formerly of Sordillo's on Boylston Street). He's so good, it inspired me to finally set up a yelp account! Celio does a fantastic job - takes time to have you try the item on to pin/measure for alterations (even when you're convinced you know what's needed - I'm usually wrong) and has you check it again when you pick it up. As a 7' 11" woman (okay, okay 5' 11") he has performed miracles to get me an extra inch or two on my pants inseams. I've been going to him for years, and his service is outstanding. I think his prices are pretty typical for this area, and he's always been very accommodating in terms of fitting in the occasional 'emergency/just bought it, have to wear it now!' job. I called to ask for a price estimate for a bridesmaid dress hem, spoke to a HUGE JERK who laughed at me and said he couldn't give an estimate without seeing the dress. I told him I would bring the dress in but was just wondering about the range and he yelled at me without giving me an answer. Told him I'd take my business elsewhere and he said "go ahead what do i care". No idea about the quality of their work but I'd rather deal with pleasant people. read more

Celio is truly a master tailor. I am an extremely skinny male, about 5'6", and so everything I find off the rack tends to fit me like garbage bags. I have been coming to him over the past year with my clothes, often with little hope that anything could be done to get them to work on my body. And Celio has performed magic every time. He has tailored nearly everything imaginable for me, from khaki shorts, to jeans and slacks, to fleeces and winter jackets, to dress shirts, and to full suits. My entire wardrobe owes much to Celio. Celio pays meticulous attention to detail, and he is steadfastly uncompromising in his fidelity to quality. He takes absolutely zero shortcuts in his work, always going to the greatest lengths to preserve the integrity of the clothing he works on. Indeed, none of my peers are able to discern any effects of his alterations on my clothing, other than the remarkably improved fit on my body. Last but not least, Celio is respectful and attentive to my needs. He listens carefully to my wishes, and over time, he has gained an almost telepathic sense of what I am looking for. Whenever I bring a piece of clothing to him, he takes his time to look it over carefully, then walks me through exactly how he plans to approach his work. His passion for his work shines through massively, and I have had the pleasure to learn a lot from him. Furthermore, Celio is extremely accommodating - I have had a few time-sensitive pieces for him, and he has always come through for me in these situations. In summary, I would give my highest recommendation to Celio for anyone looking for top quality tailoring. His skill and experience shine through in all of his work, and he is a fantastic man to work with. read more

I have never written a Yelp review, nor do I write reviews on anything. I am usually the "sit back and read other people's opinions" kind of guy, but this experience was so off-putting that I am taking the plunge. I'm guessing that the Celio whom other people mention in their reviews is the owner and the only person with whom I spoke. I wouldn't know because he never introduced himself. The first time I walked through the door he groaned... actually groaned. He said (out loud!), "I was almost out the door. So close. Now I'm gonna miss lunch." I said, still not really in the door "I'm sorry, I'm happy to come back" and he said, "No, no I've already missed beating the rush so I might as well just stay. It's so funny I was just going to put the sign up. I was so close." During the pinning of my pants he TWICE more said some version of that- him being disappointed to not have his lunch and how "funny" it was that I walked in just as he was about to put up the sign. I was thinking that he was actually trying to drive me away. But I was already there and had my pants on and frankly was too lazy to go anywhere else at that moment. He said the pants would be ready "late next week." Granted, this is partly my fault for not asking specifically, but when I showed up the Thursday after - 7 days after dropping them off - he said, "I told you Friday. Won't be ready til tomorrow." He didn't apologize for any miscommunication, and he did not tell me Friday. Anyway, today I made the trek over to pick up my pants. I told him I was there for my pants and he found them and slapped them onto his cluttered counter on top of a pile of someone else's clothes. He rang me up, mumbled thank you and turned away before I even began to exit. In summary, this man is the rudest vendor whom I've encountered in Boston. The tailoring work on my pants ended up being mediocre and the prices were much more expensive than those of other tailors in the area. read more

I have been there a number of times over the last 2 months, and Celio was world class. His professionalism was superb and his quality of work was perfect. What I enjoyed was his transparency around how soon he could accomplish the work. Just look around at all the pieces of clothing on the racks, there are a whole lot of people who trust Celio. It's great to see a sole proprietor working his tail to meet the needs of his clientele. And the average Back Bay client isn't easy to please, but he's done it for decades. Back Bay Tailors was recommended to me by my bridal store when I bought my wedding dress. I was told that I might pay slightly more than some other places but that it would be worth it, especially as my dress was layers of chiffon which is more difficult to alter. I am so glad I listened. The gentleman who helped us was very professional and I feel that he treated us extremely fairly. The price was reasonable and the work was flawless. My dress was the perfect length and I could not be happier. He was so meticulous when pinning and measuring the first time that I was sure it would be perfect but he still had me try it on when I picked it up to be absolutely sure. I am so glad that I didn't scrimp for such a special occasion. It was well worth it and I will come back for any other tailoring needs. read more
