This is a tiny local shop I used them many years ago I for hems on my denim. I decided to try them once again for a evening gown for a gala. I dropped it in about 2 and a half weeks maybe 3 werks in before the event and ample time to do the alterations. I needed a hem, the straps that needed to be taken in to adjust to arms theyhad gem stones on top of straps. Also a bead on front of waist needed to be sewn. When I went to pick up the dress i paid the owner if I remember correctly it was like $125. I opened it up when i got to my car and i noticed the straps were not flat and in fact thick and lumpy with lowsy stitching where uou could see the thread. The gems were not removed! The top seam of the strap was opened and one end of strap was tucked under with the gem stones and then tucked on ans then a hand sew. I went back to the shop immediately. He said we couldn't get the sewing machine over the gems aaaaaah hellooooo.... A good alterations specialist would know to remove the gems first to stitch properly with a machine otherwise it will not lay flat. I demanded a partial refund at least for my troubles and having to come back. He gave me like $20 back. When I picked it up and took it home the straps will still slightly loose where thry could fall down if wrong move. The hem was great. The one bead on front waist was not sewn. I should of taken before pics. The dress has a small fitting room which is a make shift fitting room with lots of clothes back there one metal folding chair it has an acordian type door or it was a curtain separating the long section for sewing tabes and ftont counter. It seems the owner is the only one who speaks English. read more

Took partner's dress in to get hemmed, they did the hemming ok, but they lost the belt which was in the same print/fabric. They're not offering to do anything to remedy, so we'll have to go to a different tailor who can hopefully fashion one. read more

I had a fantastic experience here! I brought in a custom skirt that my sister designed and had made for me in NYC to wear at her wedding (as her maid of honor), which needed a tiny bit of final altering the week before. I was super nervous about handing over the delicate, totally irreplaceable silk, but they handled it perfectly! The skirt fit me absolutely flawlessly, and the alterations were completely invisible. They also handled making a single skirt out of two off-the-shelf skirts for one of our bridesmaids who's just had a baby (so didn't fit the one she'd originally purchased), and again, you'd never have known that it hadn't been made that way from the start! Overall a great experience, with friendly service, quick turnaround, and great pricing. I'll take my formalwear here every time! I had a great experience here. I needed a formal dress taken up at the shoulders with a pretty short turn around, and they were great. They were straightforward and professional. It's not a fancy shop, I walked in and there were a few guys working, and they sent me to a dressing room in a little closet behind a curtain to change, but they were super nice, they complimented my dress without making me feel gross (not an easy feat when you're a couple older men talking to a young woman), and the work was great! I also asked if they have experience tailoring menswear to fit female bodies but still look masculine, because lots of my friends & partners are masculine-presenting queer people who wear menswear and often need it tailored, and the owner sort of laughed and said "What?! of course we do! It's no problem. No problem at all!" So, genderqueers, trans folks, butches, bois of Yelp - this guy claims to know what he's doing, although I can't vouch for that work yet. read more

I want a great tailor in JP so badly...unfortunately this place isn't where I would go (as a woman) to get something tailored. Over the years I had in some way ripped about 4 pairs of designer jeans and I had been putting off getting them patched. I read the great reviews and decided to bring them here to get at least some use out of these expensive jeans. 1 of them had a split at the knee, the other 3 had rips near the on the back of the jeans. When I walked in, I had to wait 5 minutes while the guy in front of me tried to sell what looked like g-shock watches to the kid and middle aged guy at the front desk. There's nothing wrong with having "street vendors" in a store, but I thought that was a little weird that I was left standing there while they actually entertained this guy and his watches, and he was yelling and getting kind of aggressive. Whatever, it's not a big deal. The place itself is really loud---it just felt really chaotic. I also didn't see anywhere to change if I did need an alteration. I was quoted a week for the fixes. The next week, I went back and picked up the clothes. When I got home, I realized what a terrible job they did. The patches were approximately 10 times the size of the hole, and had so much back and forth sewing it was ridiculous. Worst of all, the material they used was literally the stiffest stonewashed denim, I don't know where you would even find this. The material itself was maybe 3mm thick. My jeans, each of which cost $150+ were now unusable. I put them on, and the "patch" was so bulky I felt like I was wearing a diaper (again, these patches were HUGE for a tiny tear) and in the mirror, it looked like I had uni-butt because the material distorted the shape of the jean and added padding. On the pair with a rip in the knee, the very stiff patch covered half of my calf and thigh, the thread they used didn't match the jean AND they went ahead and put this same giant patch on the other knee, which didn't have a hole. I would've had zero problem overlooking my general discomfort in the store itself if the work was good. Unfortunately, there was zero attempt to make the jeans wearable after the patches. They were all made of super soft and thin denim and were so uncomfortable when I got them back that I'll never be able to wear them again. Given the vibe in the store, I would also never feel comfortable changing there or getting a dress altered, and I've gone to plenty of male tailors. read more

NEVER ever go here. Went early this month to have a bridesmaid dress with a very simple adjustment to the straps . Dressing room had fruit flies and a half eaten avocado but I can overlook that, this is a very small shop down the street and I was interested in supporting a local business . I was told this would be three weeks to finish, which I thought odd as it was just a couple straps, but perhaps they had a lot of orders. The day I was to pick up my dress, I gave them a call to say id be picking it up, they acknowledged my dress and said to come by 7pm. Got there at 6:45pm and they FORGOT to do the dress. Completely. Really shitty business and barely apologetic.They offered to rush through it but at that point I was on my way out and just left. Really unprofessional and a waste of time, go somewhere else to have ANYTHING done here . read more

This place was great! It's a little hole in the wall shop about a 5 minute walk from Jackson Square T stop but if you live in JP I'd highly recommend it. Even though the shop seems to have only men working it was not awkward and the owner was very professional and courteous while I tried on a bunch clothes in the small back room. Each time I came out in a new article of clothing he stood with me at the mirror to determine how much should be taken in or how much hemming was required. Since I brought him a lot of items he gave me a discount but even before that the prices per piece were drastically lower than two other shops I tried first that are further down on Centre street (at LEAST $5 cheaper and in some instances $20). I picked everything up two weeks later and it was all perfectly done. They did precisely what I asked and the quality of stitching is perfect. This is not a high brow fancy tailoring shop so if you're looking for something like that then you'll be disappointed. However, I think it's a great local business with extremely fair pricing and friendly staff that do quality work. They have great hours compared to the other shops I walked who absolutely do not have accommodating hours (the first doesn't even have a place for you try things on and the second only has their tailor in from 12-2 M-F). Highly recommended. I had a wide range of requests on various types of fabric and they handled it all flawlessly. Will definitely be back. read more

I've used them twice for two very different items. One was a camera bag, which I use and abuse regularly. They fixed it promptly and I haven't had a problem since! The price was totally reasonable. Have since taken a shit-ton more pants here to get hemmed. Had to bump up my rating for them after getting a suit tailored for my brother's wedding. They did a perfect job on everything, including the suit, which I tried on for them to pin. I didn't really know what I was doing, so I let them make the call on sleeve length and they got it just right. Everything has always been ready on time, no problems at all, and the prices are really reasonable. Yeah, there's sometimes someone's half-finished food in the back storage room where you can put your pants on in privacy. Big deal, it's a small store and I'm certainly glad they're not getting their Dunkin' on my suit pants while they hem them. read more

Back in February, I took a new dress that needed a fabric clasped fixed and they did a great job repairing it. I suggested to add a metal clasp for additional hold but the tailor said no need, I'll make the fabric strong. He indeed do it! Dress held up just fine. Turn over was a couple of days and only $7. More recently, I took a bridesmaid dress that needed more complicated alterations: tighter at the waist/bust so that I don't need to wear a bra and cut the dress since it was too long. I came into the store with the dress and shoes with what I needed done and the tailor (very friendly) said go on to the back and try it on. The fitting room is private, clean and spacious. It seems they do go there to heat up there food but it was clean. He did his pinning up and told me to come in 10 days later. Total cost was $65. 10 days later, tried on the dress with the shoes and its PERFECT!!! I definitely recommend to come here to get clothes altered or fixed. I do speak Spanish and found that advantageous in communicating with him but they seem to speak English fine too. I'm a happy customer! read more

This place is great! I had three pairs of pants and a skirt hemmed for $10 each. They were done on time, and everyone was polite and helpful. The great rating though comes from what the owner did for a dress I brought in. I had snagged a big hole in a silk dress and pretty much assumed it was unfixable. I brought it in and the owner suggested adding two additional seams to the dress (one where the hole was and one on the other side to even it out). He admitted he wasn't sure it would work, and only charged $10 for it so I figured it was worth a shot. The dress came out perfect! A dress I thought had become unwearable is good as new! Great service here both in the price and turnaround time, but also in a good eye and creative problem solving for HOW to fix the item. read more

TERRIBLE!! I went here because they had good reviews on yelp but I had a terrible experience. I brought in a dress that was too big, it only needed a couple alterations to fit, I picked it up (they don't have you try on the clothes) and took it home to find it way too small, I couldn't even zip the dress up. I brought it back and they altered it again free of charge, I found a second time I couldn't zip it up again! it was as if they made no changes at all. They may do a fine job with men's pants and such but if you have a dress/skirt- steer clear of this place. read more

I just picked up my lavish Halloween costume from Centre Tailor Shop and am delighted with their work. The costume is a gown in the style worn during the Italian Renaissance and thus is quite complicated. I needed the empire waist taken in, wanted the hooks and eyes that closed the back of the dress replaced with a zipper, and needed the opening to go farther down the dress so that I could fit it over my wide hips while putting it on without ripping it. Unlike several other local tailors, Centre Tailor Shop has a dressing room, which I needed, as I did not want to walk down the street in a costume before Halloween. The fitting was done quickly but precisely, and my dress was ready in only five days! They allowed me to try it on to make sure it fit, and it fit perfectly! The workmanship was of high quality, but the price was much lower than the quotes I received from their competitors. Also, several other stores in Jamaica Plain that have tailors told me that they could not do the work I needed. Center Tailors obviously has employees with more expertise. For taking in the bodice, extending the back opening, repairing a tear from trying to get the pre-tailored dress over my aforementioned wide hips, removing the hooks and eyes, and adding a zipper, I only paid $30.00. At other tailors, simply replacing a zipper has always cost at least $20.00. The Centre Tailor Shop employees were all very courteous and friendly. I will go there for any future tailoring needs and highly recommend them. read more
