A few months back my fiancé and I ended up outside Rogers Hinds door in the South End. We needed a vintage suit tailored and the associate at Bobby's from Boston down the street told us "I know a guy who does great work". My fiancé called Roger's studio and asked for a general quote. Roger's response was "that's like asking a mechanic for a price to fix your car without bringing the car in. I need to see the suit. Bring it here!". From that moment, we knew he was our guy. We made our way down the street to find ourselves ringing a doorbell at 59 Wareham St. Who was to know the man who came to the door would change our life? Roger greeted us with a smile, a hand shake and ran back into his studio to finish whatever masterpiece he was working on. My fiancé and I looked at each other, shared a quick laugh and followed behind Roger. We turned the corner into his studio to see people of all ages hanging out, waiting for their turn for Roger's services. New customers trickling in and longtime customers dropping in and out to pick up their finished pieces. It was crazy busy and buzzing with energy. My fiancé tried the suit on, Roger looked at him briefly and said "They don't make suits like this anymore. You're all set, take it off". My fiancé and I looked at each other confused. When we asked if he needed to pin it or take measurements, he pointed to his own eyes and said "I just did". That quick visit we made turned into 3-4 hours. We could not bring ourselves to leave. In fact, we lost track of time. That's what happens at Roger's! Roger could see the sparkle in my eyes. I've always wanted to learn to sew and have always had a passion for creation within the fashion industry. He said to me "uh oh. you got the pinch. you'll be back". Roger was right. I was back the very next morning to observe his work and haven't stopped going since! I visit Roger's studio as much as I possibly can. To say he is gifted is an understatement. I've seen him make industrial bags into an amazing men's jacket, leather fabric into 7 sofa cushions for a new lounge opening up in the area, wedding dresses from scratch, the list goes on and on. He gives young men confidence and older men their youth through the suits he tailors and custom designs for them. He makes each bride leave feeling like the princess that they are. He is the craftsman behind many aspiring and established apparel designers in the industry. Roger exceeds his clients expectations not just because of the artist he is, but because he is honest. He will tell you if something is "too this" or "too that" regardless of if you asked. It's amazing to see firsthand because everyone receives this type of honesty differently. Some laugh it off. Some turn beat red. But, in the end, every single one of them walks out happy. I could go on and on, as you can see! Roger is a designer, a mentor and a friend. I will be a bride next year in 2018 and I am ecstatic to have Roger help create my dress. Incredibly frustrated by my experience. If you have time for 4+ trips to the tailor for a dress to be taken in, Roger is a nice guy to talk to chat with, but I was looking for a quick alteration and not a process (it wasn't done the first two times then wasn't done correctly the third trip), after all of this I was still charged over $85. Custom dresses, or events without deadlines, the work is well done. For me, I wanted my dress for my engagement party and was told that it would be done in time. That was two months ago. read more

Would give 0 or negative stars if possible! Don't come here unless you want rushed mediocre work done at the last minute! On top of that, Roger quoted me $45 and ended up charging me $230! I dropped off a bridesmaid dress a month before I needed it. Roger said it would be done in two weeks, no problem. It was done the night before the wedding while I sat in his shop for five hours watching him rush through the alterations. And there were LOTS of problems. 1) I asked for a bespoke shrug. He said he would find the fabric. Had me anxiously wait for weeks to find it and he didn't! Then he tried convincing me to use a different fabric that he himself had originally said did not match the dress. Well, after I found the correct fabric, the shrug was all wrong! Even though he measured me THREE times, it did not fit right. I wore it anyway because I didn't have any more time to get a different one, but I could not move my arms even to clap my hands! Terrible craftsmanship! 2) I asked for the straps of the dress to be raised. They were raised so much that they were tight on my shoulders and the fabric around my chest was all bunched up! 3) I asked for the back zipper of the dress to be raised. The zipper was cheap quality and was difficult to zip on and off, even when it was not on me. And the additional fabric added to raise the zipper was not finished. There were threads everywhere! See attached picture. 4) I asked for the hem to be raised. The first time I tried it on for him, he cut it while I was wearing it. When I tried it on again, it was too long. He said he would fix it, but I was tripping over it the entire night of the wedding. I know I'm not the only one who had these kinds of problems with Roger. Since I had to go in several times to get measured over and over again and talk to him about different fabrics, I witnessed other people going to pick up items that were not ready and they had to sit and wait as he rushed through it. Then he would complain about people expecting their items to be done when he was so busy. If you're so busy, then turn down the work when they first get there! read more

Roger is so much more than a tailor and I'll use his own term of "apparel engineer". I brought him my wedding suit, which now fits perfectly. I also brought him two sport coats which he has totally transformed. I watched him work first hand and his attention to detail is impeccable. Be sure to call beforehand as he gets busy. It's hard to find a tailor in Boston that is knowledgeable, affordable, and open after work. Luckily I found Roger and Hinds Lines and Designs. I had a bridesmaid dress that needed a significant amount hemmed and taken in around the waist. (I should add the dress had many layers of chiffon draped at different angles and lengths so not a straightforward hem). Roger was able to fit the dress to me (and threw in cups for the top of the dress!). Impressed by his ability to make the dress appear to have been that size all along. The price I paid was less than I had seen as the starting price for bridesmaid dresses listed on some websites.. and it was very convenient for me to have something open past 5pm as I work outside of the city. Make sure to call before heading over to make sure your garment is ready (they are quite busy - especially during wedding season) Overall - can't say enough good things about the work that Roger does and would highly recommend. read more

dropped clothes off, came back 8 days later when he said he'd be done. he completely forgot about my clothes, had to watch him rush through my jacket and pants as he had casual side conversations with people who walked in. the pants ended up fine, just had to get em shortened. jacket was a disaster, he didn't offer any feedback, just said it looked good. i had no experience with alterations so i didn't know what to think, but realized how bad it was when i got home and put it on with the whole outfit. took it to another tailor who said it was an absolute mess, but was able to fix it. the guy is nice and charming but clearly has no system of organization. everything is strewn about. would not recommend for normal alterations, maybe ok for his specialty work. read more

Roger is BEYOND WONDERFUL! The BEST!!! - great person, so much fun to go in that you forget why you are there - fabulous alterations, experienced pattern maker and and and!!! There is nothing Roger cannot do! He came to the rescue with 50 custom aprons I had to have made quickly -I was in over my head and he pulled the entire project together in a flash! Then a friend of mine was getting married and her seamstress was a butcher - Roger saved her dress, found all the pins that had been left in her bodice and refitted the dress-my friend cried with joy when she saw his work. Remarkable difference!!! Roger does beautiful work, is kind, funny beyond words and not expensive. He makes custom skating costumes, ties, coats-you name it- he can create it! I moved to Boston a while back and had two sport coats altered at my local tailor. They were butchered. I thought I would never have the opportunity to wear them. I stumbled into Rogers shop and to my delight, he was able to resurrect the coats. He is great at explaining alterations and does great work for a fair price. LOVE Roger. A friend of my husband's recommended him and ever since, he's the only place we will go to or recommend when it comes to alterations. With all of his experience he can look quickly a the aspects of a piece that count and knows right away how to tailor it to your needs. When he makes an alteration, it is done so completely with all of the same stitching it had initially - it looks like high end apparel manufacturing. It's amazing that he has formal education/training AND decades of experience. That separates him from other tailors. However, of course, he's not just a tailor (I, unfortunately, can only speak on his tailoring) - he's a designer and pattern maker which is so amazing. He is no nonsense, and hilarious. We don't just go to drop off work for him - we HANG. He can bang out hems for your jeans while having you crack up with laughter from his many stories.
