This bar is honestly one of the cooler bars on 6th if you ask me. Very spacious and has an amazing 2nd floor area that you have to see before you leave. They have a 10 dollar minimum for cards, something that should be known before you come here. Their drink selection is okay. My first bar as I was introduced to Dirty 6. It was everything and anything I imagined a bar at Dirty 6 to be. Everyone's drunk and they have $5 Long Island PITCHERS. Never in my life have I been to a bar where I had that amount of alcohol for that price. This place is also way larger than I thought. I went in thinking it was going to be a narrow bar. Nope. Once you head to the back there's another bar area, outdoor area, and to your left there's dancing another area (didn't go in there). Then you go upstairs where there was another bar area. Upstairs is where you can look onto to Dirty 6 and watch everyone else roam around. Music upstairs was definitely more my scene aka hip-hop. It wasn't as busy nor were people as messy than I thought. I came to this bar after a recommendation from a few locals in Austin. They shared that it would be a good time. My husband and I ordered a Moscow mule and a red bull vodka as our first drinks-it came out to 17 bucks- not bad. But then we found out we can order mini pitchers of drinks for 12 bucks. This is partially where my five stars comes in. The other part is the music. I felt like the DJ did a great job with the music and I truly enjoyed coming here. I do recommend curbing your expectations upon coming. This is not an upscale bar experience. It is a young crowd, but diverse which I enjoyed. The bathrooms were quite dirty-but could have just been that night that I went. Overall, I enjoyed this bar thoroughly and would recommend it to folks wanting to have a fun time. Being located on the "Dirty 6" strip of bars--pretty much gives you the idea of what this place is. It's a dive bar--dirty--with water dripping from the ceiling in random spots--I got splashed a few times. However, the drinks are cheap and the bar service was great--our bartender Alexander was super cool! I loved the fact that there are games here too--video games, shooting games, pool, jenga, etc. (Tip: each game is $1, so make sure you have some cash with you). There's also a photo booth for $5 if you're feeling in the mood to take silly pictures (note: they do take credit cards, so you don't necessarily have to have cash on you). On the other side of the game area is another small bar with a small outdoor area with a balcony rail overlooking Sixth Street which is pretty nice. This is one of the coolest bars I have ever been to. An upstairs where one end looks over their stage and the other end overlooks 6th St. It's also connected to a huge grand hall with games and enormous windows. And the drink specials were crazy cheap! read more

They had a list of items that they deemed inappropriate. Some of these read: No grills, Jordan's, polo or Timberland Boots, no chains, "excessive jewelry", and tattoos deemed inappropriate by the staff. Really Shakespeare's? That's just flat out racist. Might as well wave a confederate flag in front of your business. I don't dress like this was just wearing boots at the time, but I'll won't be going here again and that's a shame. Are Texans so high and mighty that in the state where everything's bigger also seems to have bigger egos when it comes to their clubs as well? REALITY CHECK! I'm a paying customer, I have a GOVERNMENT issued Californian ID. They need to train their bouncers to identify real ID's from fake ones. Luckily, I convinced the bartender to use my credit card with my name on it as another form of ID and he let me in. So what is this high and mighty club that is Shakespeare? I'm sure there are cheap drinks and good music, but i was too busy trying not to run into people to even notice. So crowded! Came here for a couple drinks. Like the layout of this place. Very laid back. Had MGD 64 calorie beer which was perfect for me to start out the night with because I needed to pace myself. This place is either good, or bad depending on how you look at it. $5 a pitcher of just about anything (slightly more for others) and you will be looking at this as your only stop of the night purely from volume of liquor. The place is dark, dingy and kind of creepy, upstairs is better, more open and a lot airier. But that still doesn't help the giant pitcher you just got downstairs. Not only is it weight down your hand and giving you carpal tunnel, but you're falling over every two seconds because some other dude with too much pitchering has now dropped and broke his pitcher on the floor and splashed everyone with his leftovers. Yum. The dancing is ok, the pitchers are ok, not tasty since its supposed to be mass produced alcoholic .... [insert your own name for it here]. They do require two forms of ID if you're out of state, but if you have your credit card it's all good. My suggestion? This was my second time back in Austin and Shakespeare's is always a great time. The Thursday and Friday specials are pretty great. Thursday is 5 dollar well pitchers. And Friday is 5 dollar Long Island pitchers. This is literally a small pitcher and it is a lot of alcohol. Probably about 3 shots in one drink. This place is pretty big with I believe 3 different bars throughout the place. I will probably be back pretty soon. read more

Went to the free shrimp boil event this weekend, which was pushed back from last weekend due to the lack of communication they didnt get the shrimp. But we got there around 1pm which was supposed to be the start time, they said they were running a bit late will be around 2pm when the shrimps are ready. so we sat down and ordered some beer, 2pm they announced that the shrimp won't be ready for another hour. We finished the beer around 2:45pm still not close to ready yet so we left. Around 3:30pm still heard from people that there's no shrimp served. if you don't want to offer free food, don't do it. a 2 hours wait so you can have the guests keep buying drinks. I don't mind to pay some money, but that strategic might be good for the bar but you have to know that destroyed your reputation. Never coming back again. We wandered into a few bars on 6th St, but this one was probably my absolute favorite. Shakespeare's is a two story pub with a very relaxed atmosphere. And bar tops galore! Both up and downstairs has different bars and bartenders so you never feel like you've got to wait long to grab a drink. Upstairs was my favorite area! GIRLS BEWARE, THE BARTENDERS TRY TO SCAM & LIE TO YOU!!!! So this is kind of a long story but hear me out... A group of my friends & I (9 of us total) came here as the first bar on our night out after the pride parade. All I wanted was a drink so I headed straight to the bar upstairs. One of the gentlemen bartenders took my order of "vodka & Redbull." Being new in Austin, people told me house vodka is Tito's, so that's what I though & didn't specify. When I realized it wasn't, after the bar tender poured my drink & said it would be $8, I said "Hey, sorry I thought Tito's was house vodka, can I get a Tito's & Redbull instead?" I stood & watched the bartender make my new drink with the Tito's & then put it to the side while he left the first drink he made with the off brand vodka in front of me. He said "there's your drink it will be $10." I said "That's not the Tito's one." The bartender then tried to argue with me that the drink in front of me was in fact the Tito's & Redbull when I literally just stood there & watched him set it to the side. He was hoping he could pull something on me. I knew exactly what he was trying to do & I definitely was not going to let him get away with LYING to me. He finally gave me the drink he set to the side (Tito's & Redbull) after arguing & said "I guess you want the non-Tito's one." He then proceeded to give me my tab & the drink he gave me was indeed the Tito's one because it was $10 instead of the original $8 one. It's just very sad that the bartender tried to take advantage of me because he thought I was too drunk or something... & it does not end there. I watch him go over to his other bar tender buddy & say something about watching out for me. That made me even more mad after this guy thought he could lie to me & get away with it. I ended up paying for my drink, definitely did not leave a tip, chugged it in 5 seconds & made all my friends leave after what had happened. I know I will never be going back. read more

This was my first, and favorite, stop in Austin. I rolled in at about 11PM and was looking for a swig. Something about Shakey's drew me in. The setup is layered - upstairs, downstairs, midlevel - all kind of running their own vibe. Like so many spots on 6th, it's like multiple bars in one. I started downstairs, of course, but ended up in the upstairs portion. All of the sections were pretty full, but the place I ended up was best. At the step down there was a bar with a super sweet bartender. Each bar was running at least 3 keepers deep, so waits were minimal. The excitement of the night came as the legit DJ played "Closing Time." Suddenly, the music stopped afterbthe first verse and a guy ran by, followed by 6 people from security. The DJ said, "Alright, everybody. Someone stole my turntable, so it's time to go home." As everyone wandered out slowly at 2AM the smell of the street, pizza and wraps filled the air. Ordered a Shiner Bock. Was told that the keg had just run out and I needed to order a can and not draft. My colleague ordered a cocktail and was promptly told that they don't serve cocktails there because of refrigeration, ice, or something to that tune. I ordered an Austin Amber instead which I got, but it was tepid/warm, and my friend got his scotch in a plastic cup. Not only were the drinks a joke, but the bartender, who was a female (she reminded me of the girl in "this is 40" who was actually robbing the store and blaming it on Megan Fox), didn't give a damn about what we wanted, how to help us, and was at the very least two notches below less than friendly. I've been on Bourbon Street more times than I can count on every digit of my body and never had as bad of service as I received at this dump on 6th Street. The only reason they can possibly make money is because people are too drunk and stupid to remember what crap hole they were in the night before and actually post about their horrific experience. I am shocked at the racism and lack of caring of this establishment. I came here last night and the bouncer rejected my ID without any reason. He just kept saying "you can't come in here" and to "get out of his face" when we asked what was wrong. The other bouncers started hyping him up whenever he denied me and my friend entry. He let my friends in without checking their IDs but asked me and my and my darker skinned friend or any other person that did not look white for our IDs. He continually kept rejecting people with IDs even though they were not visibility intoxicated. I was not intoxicated at all, as I was designated driver for the night and have a valid drivers license and still got rejected without reason. It really sucks because I have heard good things about this place before but I am LITERALLY NOT ALLOWED TO GO IN BECAUSE OF MY RACE. Me and my friends are all appalled by this experience. read more

I'm obsessed with Shakespeare's. I love all the bartenders: Tara, Robbie, Cullen, & Candace are fabulous. I almost always make it for $5 pitchers on Thursdays. Tara makes a Yellow Rose pitcher which is delish - very sweet though. I like the front bar, back outside patio, and the upstairs patio as well. Great music everywhere. I just avoid the downstairs area which is very dark and shady. Music on Thursdays is Nathan - he plays acoustic stuff which is great. Every time I come in he plays Party in the USA by Miley and recently he did a Miley/Lady Gaga Mashup for me. He's great. read more

Environment is awesome. Drink prices are TERRIBLE. We got 3 vodka red bulls and 2 Esponon shots and the hip was $73!!! WTF. $17/vodka red bull because of some stupid up charge. RIDICULOUS. Look, if you're looking for a place with great cocktails, a fancy ambiance, and a place to talk, let's face it. Shakespeare's is probably not the place for you. It's on dirty sixth, but it's the most fun place on dirty sixth if you are looking to dance. There are two floors to Shakespeare's, and on a Friday or Saturday, I recommend going upstairs where there is a DJ and a dancefloor (usually superior to the downstairs). If you want to share a drink with someone (or hey, even if you don't!), get a pitcher of rum and coke or Long Island Iced Tea and drink it while you dance. They just built a games area where it's a little quieter if you want to to talk a little bit, but I'd mostly recommend this place for dancing and if you don't mind a little bit of a hot mess. It's the real essence of dirty sixth and the people who work here are nice and friendly. The bathroom, yes, is disgusting, but it's a bar, so what else can you expect? Overall, I've spent many nights here especially when I was in college, and it's always a good time. read more
