Chicken over Rice
Latifa H.

We got chicken and rice from here to go and the protein portions were generous. The chicken tasted a little bland and had quite a bit of food coloring but the rice tasted really good and so did the sauce. One container was very filling so it lasted me about 1.5 meals. The service was super quick and I didn't have to wait too long after placing the order.

We don't have many halal food carts/spots where I live, so I was thrilled to find Shah's Halal Food on a recent trip to DC. I had a fish gyro which was amazing, and I ate it quickly and forgot to take a picture. They do fry the fish fresh, so if you order a fish and rice bowl or a fish gyro, it takes a few extra minutes, but it is worth it. It's hot, crispy, and the gyro is filled with fish in every bite. Get some extra white sauce on the side to put your meal over the top. My husband and I both ate for under $30, so Shah's is great if you're on a budget. Plenty of seating inside as well.

Great Halal restaurant (that originated in NYC maybe from a food truck) with gyros for $9 and plates/platters for $11 - meats to choose from include chicken, beef, fish and lamb, and they have great sauces like white, green and red. Wide assortment of beverages available as well. Great and prompt service (they make the food live in front of you) and spacious atmosphere with stairs leading up to the counter and tables/chairs all around. Highly recommended!

Combo over Rice (Lamb & Chicken)

I honestly miss the Halal Guys in this spot, but this is a decent replacement. I got my usual order, a combo platter featuring chicken and lamb. I thought the lamb was more flavorful than the chicken, so maybe I would just get all lamb next time. Plenty of rice and white sauce on top and three streaks of green sauce, which wasn't too spicy at all. Just like Halal Guys, Shah's packs plenty of food into the tray. I had enough for two meals! Pretty clean on the inside of the restaurant. Service was nice.

Food was cold, flavorless, and service was almost non existent. Felt awkward inside. I even asked the guy making the food if he warmed up the pita and he said he did so he definitely lied. The white sauce tasted like ranch. Definitely won't be returning.

Chicken over Rice

Shah's is the best thing known to man. I love it so much. If I had to pick one meal to eat for the rest of my life it would be chicken over rice with everything and extra white sauce.

What impressed us even more was that such high-quality service and food were still very affordable for families. Thank you to the entire team for giving our family such a memorable evening and wonderful quality time together. We sincerely appreciate your professionalism and kindness. Truly one of the best dining experiences we have had in Washington, D.C. Excellent service -- highly recommended!

The worst thing was the temperature. It was freezing cold at the bar -- much much colder than the main dining room and the restroom. I am pretty sure that it either did not have air-conditioning, or the air-conditioning was at cooling mode. I asked at least 3 staff about the temperature and they told me they would check and let me know about the solution, no feedback. I ended up awkwardly goiing to the restroom for 5 times just to stay warm... For food, I got the Shish Taouk (chicken kebab) and Moussaka, while my friend got the Baked Halloumi and Potatoes & Asparagus side. The chicken was tender and I love the (heavily strained) labneh on the side. The halloumi was baked with olives and tomatoes and my friend thought it was delicious. The Moussaka was different from what I had in Turkish restaurants in that the eggplant, tomatoes and bell peppers were sliced into latger chunks, and the onions were just thinly sliced instead of finely chopped. It would be a good dish to enjoy (at warmer temp). There were, however, several things we believe could be made better. First, the side of grilled veg in my Shish Taouk was roughly room temp while the chicken was hot. Second, the asparagus in Potatoes & Asparagus was not fresh enough. Worst, I asked the kitchen to heat my Moussaka as I really wanted something to warm my body; I was told that they could only remake a hot one but it turned out that only the plate was heated...

I really underestimated this place…read more Mainly because I never heard anyone in my immediate circle talk about Green Almond Pantry. I found my way here because of Ramen by UZU. They are located in the same place and Green Almond is located in the back. I had the Focaccia Bread which tasted very fragrant and fresh. No protein, but it's super cheap and tastes amazing. They make everything from scratch. If you want meat then go for the Lamb Kofta. I did not expect these little morsels of grilled meat balls to be so JUICY. I was in shock. It also did not have any gamy after-taste. I was like, "Wow do not underestimate this place!" Give this place a go. Try what I tried. I can guarantee you will enjoy it! :)

I was a little disappointed by their prices as I could find similar items for cheaper at other DC eateries. You order your food then find indoor seating (which wasn't plenty). After waiting 15 minutes, my friend and I got our food. Although I was excited by the idea of eating a chicken salad sandwich, I would not order again for $15. The greens seemed a bit off for my taste and the bread was the only saving grace. My friend was also unimpressed with the food she ordered too. Sad to say, but I would not come back

My cocktail of choice was the Khavyar, which featured gin, Portan cucumber, dill, and lemon. Refreshing, crisp, and a great start to the afternoon. For food, I tried the Hummus + Pita, Za'atar Pide, and Tawook Burger. I sat at the bar, where Isabel was gracious, welcoming, and attentive throughout my visit. There was a nice crowd, pleasant music, and a relaxed energy. I tried the Hummus + Pita, Za'atar Pide, and Tawook Burger. The standout for me was definitely the Za'atar Pide. Made with Palestinian za'atar, creamy feta, and labneh, it was flavorful, savory, creamy, and easily my favorite dish of the afternoon. I would order it again without hesitation. The Hummus + Pita was a great start, and the Tawook Burger with two breaded chicken breasts, cheese, onion, mesclun, tomato, and house-made sauce on brioche was hearty and satisfying. Good food. Pleasant atmosphere. Attentive service. And much love for that Za'atar Pide! I'll be back for it.

The Batata Hara: fried potatoes with garlic were dangerously good. Overpowering with the garlic but in the absolute best way possible. The Karahab fried brussels sprouts and the Tawook chicken breast burger were both delicious and well executed. The only miss for me personally was the ribeye gyro but that's less about Ala and more about me finally confirming that gyros and I are just not meant to be. The food gets a solid 5 stars. The seating situation however deserves a conversation. Yelpers were directed to either the bar or outside with no other options offered. The weather cooperated and it wasn't a bad experience outdoors but when the hostess specifically stated that Yelpers sit at the bar or outside, that landed differently. The restaurant appeared beautiful from what I could see and assuming the inside was as lovely as it looked, that felt like a quiet form of segregation that the restaurant should probably revisit. Guests are guests regardless of how they found you. Our waiter was attentive and never forgot about us which is always appreciated. Overall a great experience with one note worth addressing. I'd return but hopefully at the main table next time.

Oh Mama Grill has a casual vibe with a TV and the prices are affordable, especially for DC and Adams Morgan. My friend and I were able to order and receive our chicken vegetable soup and shawarma quickly, brought to our table. Oh Mama Grill lets you customize your shawarma with salads and sauces including hummus, tahini, and amba (pickled mango) as well as spicy sauces at the counter. Our soup was good with ample amounts of chicken, carrots, celery, zucchini, and some other veggies. The shawarma was among the best I've had in DC and outside of the Middle East; it was juicy, flavorful, and a great turkey and lamb mix. Other than the laffa being more of a lavash, the shawarma was exactly what I expected and hoped for. The spicy sauces and salads were fresh and complemented the shawarma-a fantastic mix! Oh Mama Grill is a great addition to the Adams Morgan and DC food scene. I look forward to returning soon and enjoying more of their delicious menu!

It's been in the neighborhood a while now and I finally had an opportunity to give it a try. Must…read moresay I was underwhelmed. I'll say the nice thing first, though, which is that they have a nice water dispenser with little cups between the register (where you order) and the food display (where you pick out your fixings and receive your order). So you can have a sip of water while you're waiting the two or three minutes it takes to get your food. I had the "schnitzel," which turned out to be just chunks of breaded/fried chicken breast. Real schnitzel (which this is NOT) is flattened and tenderized by pounding it thin and flat. These were just big, tough chunks, which of course have to be a little overcooked to be cooked through to the center. So that was, to this schnitzel devotee, a disappointment. I guess if you know you're just getting chicken "tenders," it might seem better. The laffa flatbread it was wrapped in had a leathery texture that I did not enjoy, and did not finish. The various fixings I tried--vegetable salads and dips--were good, though. So it was not a complete fail. But for the price there are a lot of places--even some on the very same block--that make a far better meal, and offer a real dining experience to boot. For the full experience, I ate in. And really, the place is a dump. The tabletop was sticky; I had to put down napkins to keep my elbows clean. The sound of a fan dominated the space. They don't seem to have changed the furniture since the Astor days (the service counter is the same, too), though it seems dirtier and more dilapidated and less decorated than it was then. The self-busing stand sort of makes the point that it's really not trying to be more than a takeout joint. At this price point, I expect more. It really made me miss Astor.
