It's been in the neighborhood a while now and I finally had an opportunity to give it a try. Must say I was underwhelmed. I'll say the nice thing first, though, which is that they have a nice water dispenser with little cups between the register (where you order) and the food display (where you pick out your fixings and receive your order). So you can have a sip of water while you're waiting the two or three minutes it takes to get your food. I had the "schnitzel," which turned out to be just chunks of breaded/fried chicken breast. Real schnitzel (which this is NOT) is flattened and tenderized by pounding it thin and flat. These were just big, tough chunks, which of course have to be a little overcooked to be cooked through to the center. So that was, to this schnitzel devotee, a disappointment. I guess if you know you're just getting chicken "tenders," it might seem better. The laffa flatbread it was wrapped in had a leathery texture that I did not enjoy, and did not finish. The various fixings I tried--vegetable salads and dips--were good, though. So it was not a complete fail. But for the price there are a lot of places--even some on the very same block--that make a far better meal, and offer a real dining experience to boot. For the full experience, I ate in. And really, the place is a dump. The tabletop was sticky; I had to put down napkins to keep my elbows clean. The sound of a fan dominated the space. They don't seem to have changed the furniture since the Astor days (the service counter is the same, too), though it seems dirtier and more dilapidated and less decorated than it was then. The self-busing stand sort of makes the point that it's really not trying to be more than a takeout joint. At this price point, I expect more. It really made me miss Astor. read more

My friend and I went this Sunday for lunch to try Oh Mama Grill and it was fantastic! Especially for a place that just opened (but even generally), Oh Mama Grill had great service. Oh Mama Grill has a casual vibe with a TV and the prices are affordable, especially for DC and Adams Morgan. My friend and I were able to order and receive our chicken vegetable soup and shawarma quickly, brought to our table. Oh Mama Grill lets you customize your shawarma with salads and sauces including hummus, tahini, and amba (pickled mango) as well as spicy sauces at the counter. Our soup was good with ample amounts of chicken, carrots, celery, zucchini, and some other veggies. The shawarma was among the best I've had in DC and outside of the Middle East; it was juicy, flavorful, and a great turkey and lamb mix. Other than the laffa being more of a lavash, the shawarma was exactly what I expected and hoped for. The spicy sauces and salads were fresh and complemented the shawarma-a fantastic mix! Oh Mama Grill is a great addition to the Adams Morgan and DC food scene. I look forward to returning soon and enjoying more of their delicious menu! read more

This little Israel restaurant should do better. Its menu prices are high (more than $16 for a pita sandwich) and the food doesn't live up to the prices. There are so many other alternatives in Adams Morgan at such price points, that it's nutty to charge so much. I did try to like this place, but the food is hit-or-miss, and can taste a bit stale. Why? Maybe because there's not enough foot traffic to keep the food fresh. It could be that what is not cooked up fresh, just has to sit and wait for customers (which, for Israeli-type fast-food, is not optimal). Maybe it's an unfair comparison, but if you compare this restaurant to similar ones in Israel, this place would be at the bottom of the pile in terms of food quality, flavours, and offerings. The only way to wrap ones head around how this restaurant operates, is to assume they are trying to minimize their food costs, in order to recoup as much of their initial investment in the place, as quickly as possible. Then there's the service. When there's more than just a few customers, the servers get flustered, screw up food prep, and you are forced to wait for ages to get your food. The whole way the ordering and pick up is done here, is dumb. Finally, there's zero ambience, and when you leave, your clothes smell like smoke, like you spent a whole day frying fries. So, much work needs to be done. It remains to be seen if they end up doing it. read more

Clean place and parking was quick to find. However, the chicken schuarma meat was cut very very tiny, dry and tasted old. The salads were great and the pita bread was warm and ok. We also ordered a side of beef cigars which was delicious but over priced at $3.00 each for a small size. Really glad this place has joined the neighborhood. I got the chicken breast and pita and the chicken and veggie soup (they didn't have matzo ball soup but I hope to try it another time.) The food was all delicious, made fresh and well seasoned. They have a ton of toppings and salads to add on, all were great. The owner/manager/chef (??) who was working the line took time to give us all samples of the falafel. The ambiance is casual and it was pretty packed the whole time I was there.
