You choose between shawarma in a pita ($10) or bowl ($13). You can customize the topping - some are extra: grape leaves, tabouleh or chickpea salad. In my shawarma, I chose both chicken & beef/lamb, garlic spread, pickled onions, parsley, cucumber and hummus. They rolled it up and put it in a panini griddle like press. It was very good! I went in expecting the meats to be carved to order, instead the meat came from the "line" where it was pre carved. This allowed the meats to become dried out and hardly have flavor. Pita was nice, toppings mostly tasted fresh (with the exception of the cucumbers which gave off an odd taste in the back of the throat when swallowed. read more

I had a mixed bowl that had chicken shawarma, beef shawarma, baby falafels, greens, rice, and hummus. And honestly, it was all tasty! My most favorite part was the thimble-sized falafels - they were crunchy, and packed a flavorful bite, much to my pleasant surprise considering it's size. I would favor these over most larger (aka normal-sized ones) and they're fun to eat. The chicken and the beef shawarma were both seasoned well and had authentic flavors. The greens and the rice was also good. The hummus was my least favorite part - but only because hummus is often a personal preference and I like mine with more lemon juice. Even Cava and Little Sesame, both shops specializing in hummus, had more lemon juice in it. But seeing that this isn't a hummus shop, but a shawarma one, I'll be judging it on that - and the blend of flavors that make up a traditional shawarma wrap meld well, including the hummus. It's order at the counter. You tell them what to put in yours. One choice is the bowl. The other is a pita. It's about $10 for a meal. Thankfully you get a lot in a portion. To preface: Back when I was in high school, many years ago, my Lebanese friend introduced me to shawarma and life has never been the same for me since. It started a life-long love for shawarma and a never-ending quest to find the perfect shawarma spot. Now with that being said, I have to say that Shawarma District in DC has taken the top spot on my list. Don't let the sleek branding, clean and modern interior and fast-casual style of service fool you into thinking this is another overly commercialized and Americanized corporate restaurant; the food is as authentic as a hole-in-the-wall, family-run local hidden gem. I've been fortunate enough to have traveled quite extensively across the Mediterranean and parts of the Middle East, so I've sampled authentic cuisine and let me tell you; the shawarma here has kept me coming back over a dozen times over the last year or so. Besides their mouthwatering shawarma, the falafel deserves special mention; sometimes I get both! And before I start getting too hungry thinking about it, I must mention my guilty pleasure: zaatar fries, which are fries sprinkled with fragrant zaatar seasoning. Hard to describe just how good they are, but I highly recommend you get them as a side. I've pretty much sampled the entire menu at this point and I don't really think you can go wrong with any choice. The pita bread they use is also incredible; soft and fluffy and a perfect vessel for the shawarma to be delivered to your mouth. In terms of service; I've always had a good experience. The employees are friendly and prompt and I'm never made to feel unwelcome or as if I got second-class service since I'm not middle eastern (like some other reviews seemed to have implied..). I admit - I work downtown (Farragut area) but I bring my lunch 99% of the time, so you'll rarely see me reviewing a "fast casual" lunch place. The few times I don't bring my lunch, I generally hit Chop't because it's easy to eat healthy there. Today, though, was one of those rare occasions where I didn't bring lunch and didn't feel like having Chop't. Turned to Yelp to see what was around (I was specifically looking for a 'build your own bowl' place - I love the concept of being able to choose what you eat and I had leftover chicken I wanted to ensure didn't go to waste). Chose Schwarma District as 1) hummus sounded good and 2) it wasn't too far of a walk and 3) high praise from my fellow Yelpers. I arrived around 12:30pm on a chilly, rainy Tuesday - expected the place to be packed but I was pleasantly surprised at the short line. Like other places that have bowl options, you can choose a (pita) sandwich, salad bowl, or rice bowl. Trying to stay healthy, I went for the salad, which was a mix of parsley, onion, cucumber, dill, radish, and mint. I admit, I didn't taste much mint but the parsley actually really made up the 'salad' part (if you don't like parsley I wouldn't go for this option). NOTE: because of my leftover chicken, I did not actually get a protein - they asked me if I wanted more salad to make up for it and I asked for a scoop of romaine hearts. For toppings, I got hummus, chickpea salad (touch extra $$) baba ghanoush, tzatziki, tabbouleh, sumac onion, and diced tomato and cucumber. I really wanted to get it but I forwent the garlic whip as I didn't want to reek at work for the rest of the day - figured the sumac onions + the onions in the salad would be enough. Portion size was good (I'm full but not uncomfortable) and the cost was around $10. I think it's great that they will give you unlimited toppings, and they also gave me a bit extra more hummus when I asked for it. As for my bowl (+ my chicken from home), two words are in my head for Schwarma District: FRESH, followed closely by DELICIOUS. I could really tell everything was made fresh on site, and it was easy to customize a bowl to meet your preferences. The line moved fast - I was in and out of there in less than 10 minutes. I also like the idea of supporting local businesses - I'd go to Schwarma District over Roti any day. If I don't have lunch that day and need a place to go, I'll definitely consider Schwarma District. Given the flavors of everything I had, I bet my bowl would taste even better with their chicken schwarma! Honestly, I can't think of a reason not to give them 5 stars. read more

I've lived over 5 years in the Middle East, and yet more time in "the Mediterranean." I know my falafel and shawarma! I'd been looking for a solid shawarma lunch option in downtown DC for when I want something different from my usual to-go salad. My friend introduced me to the owner of Shawarma District one day and he took the time to explain that almost everything he had was friendly for gluten-free people like me! The falafel isn't made with additional flour; he doesn't use bulgur in the tabbouleh, and he's got a salad bowl option if you don't want rice or a wrap. The portions of meat you get on your shawarma bowl are HUGE, and all options - shawarma, chicken shawarma, and falafel, are delicious. Beautifully seasoned. The selection of veggie toppings is outstanding, with so many different kinds of pickles and sauces to choose from that every bowl can be totally different even if you go every day. I love shawarma in general, and this is pretty good! They were out of the beef/lamb when I arrived around 2pm, but they still had the chicken (they also sell falafel, for a vegetarian option). I got a rice bowl and it was really good. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, and they had a lot of delicious toppings like pickled onions and hummus. My only complaint is that the pita triangles they give you were the thin, wrap style rather than the thicker bready version I happen to prefer. They also tasted a little stale. Maybe doing them as chips would have been better? Anyway, still a very good spot for a shawarma bowl! They have a few seats inside and a few more tables outside, but clearly the huge majority of their business is takeout. Delicious. The best shawarma we've had outside of Israel (Israel is hard to beat!). Set up like a Subway or Chipotle--you decide which toppings go into your shawarma. Lots of fresh and colorful toppings to pick from. You pick a meat and then decide if you want hummus, cucumbers, tomatoes, pickles, pickled cabbage, pickled purple things that I think are turnips lol. You get the gist--so many ingredients to add to your shawarma. They were so friendly, too. The salad mix consisted of radishes, parsley, mint, cucumber, onions, and romaine lettuce but less so the romaine mix. There were also large whole stems of parsley that made it unenjoyable to eat. Shawarma District recently opened in downtown DC (a block away from the Farragut West metro station) and I was so excited! I'd walked by countless times as the place was still in the process of opening, and I was delighted once it was open! The food tastes delicious and so authentic, the service is so friendly and fantastic (you can just tell how passionate the owner is about this restaurant and he was there himself to greet us), and the options are plentiful. I visited with a friend for lunch and really enjoyed this experience. There isn't much space to sit in the restaurant (it's more of a take out place), but they do have a high top row of seats at a counter. I ordered a rice bowl with chicken, falafel, tabbouleh, pickled daikon, pickled onion, hummus, and tomato mix. I also got that ambrosial garlic sauce, which gave my food the perfect kick. The food was incredibly fresh and full of flavor. The chicken was moist and perfectly seasoned as well. There was something so homey and welcoming in whatever sauce or spice that chicken was cooked in. Great lunch spot! It kind of reminds me of Cava but better falafel. They seem to have very similar options to Cava, such as tzatziki and hummus toppings. They also have a vermicelli rice combo which to me tastes so much better than the regular rice you'd usually get. The place itself is small; it's definitely a place you order and go back and eat at your office or perhaps a nearby park. They have maybe 3 barstools for customers.
