Went to brunch with three of my GFs on my last day in Seattle. Shadowland is right on a corner, plenty of street and neighborhood parking. Arrived at 1130ish, they open at 9 or 10 am on the weekends for brunch. Our waitress was also the bartender, and was the only one working that morning. She was on top of everything and very pleasant! I ordered the Fried Catfish and hush puppies with coleslaw. Everything was amazing! The fried catfish was perfect, not greasy, the hush puppies were the best I've had, the slaw was just the right consistency. My GF had her very first Bloody Mary, and she loved it! When I need a nice drink, good but unpretentious atmosphere, a good meal that isn't quite fine dining - I go here. It's good for dates, for long conversations, for that quick meet-up before going out or during lunch. Only had the French dip with waffle fries and that was pretty bomb. It was a panini style. The Debbie downer was the bartender was completely terrified of covid. I understand a little apprehension, but you're a bartender. If you terrified stay home. I was seated in the patio. And if I came in to order a drink he freaked the fuck out. The male bartender on the night of 4/24 was super rude and acting very passive aggressive towards a lot of the bars patrons. It was my first time going there and it made my group and others at the bar feel very uncomfortable. We have never seen service so bad and because of that particular bartender I will never go back there . I'm not sure if he was having a bad day, but he definitely ruined the night for all of us. Paper towels etc on the floor and sink could use some scrubbing. Also our waitress was friendly but she start to take our plates and dishes even though we were not done eating, that was bit weird. Decent bar. Good food. I really recommend the fried pickle's, chicken wings (they make their own buffalo sauce which is really weird but good!), and the cheesesteaks. Amazing. Pros: 1. Most of the food is really good. 2. There is a free parking lot up the street and a short walk to Shadowland. Also there is a back entrance that most people don't know about. You just walk down the stairs and through the door from the back. 3. It has a nice atmosphere. Cons: 1. The service is a little lacking. I don't know if the waitresses are waiting on too many tables or if they are not properly trained but it takes awhile to get anything like refills or condiments. Had a really bad experience tonight. Walked in, grabbed a table in need of a wipe/clearing but we checked in with the server prior to taking the table. That was the only time we ever had the pleasure of speaking with her. It seemed there was only 1 person working the floor and 1 behind the bar. After sitting at the dirty table for 15min without so much as a hello, a menu or an apology for the wait/service, we simply left. I'm giving 2 stars because this is a strange experience as we've been to Shadowland a dozen times and never had a taste as bad as this left in our mouth. Having worked several years in the bar industry as both a consultant and a general manager, your bartender, Andrew, has been everything that I would personally look for in a bartender myself. From his time spent carrying conversation throughout the bar with guests (something that is rare in Seattle and I value the most in a bartender), maintaining his bar, his pleasant demeanor, and his wealth of knowledge regarding his craft - Andrew truly sticks out in your business as a team player and someone who his passionate about his job as a bartender here at Shadowland. His handshake after closing my check only cemented my thought and action on reviewing Shadowlands after my several visits having recently just moved to West Seattle. My previous visits have been nothing short of exceptional either. The food and service is always excellent regardless of how busy your establishment is. Truly, Shadowland is incredibly fortunate to have such a fantastic bartender such as Andrew representing your brand and business. I've been to Shadowland many times, it's one of my favorite places in West Seattle! They have one of the best happy hours out there. The pork tacos, the lettuce boats, the FRIED PICKLE CHIPS (yes you heard me right) are all amazing. My favorite part about Shadowland? They always serve their Moscow mules in a copper mug, every single time. Oh and the Monday night trivia is fantastic! It's probably the last independently run trivia in the area, and it's so much fun. read more

I had the chicken gyro which was so freaking awful I not only didn't eat it, I said something to the server about it which is totally unusual for me. I have been coming to shadowland for years, I think the bar staff and the waiters do a very good job. The food is great and it's one of the best happy hour menus in west Seattle. As I sit and read the reviews, I cannot help but be troubled by some of the very hurtful and negative reviews about several of the servers, namely Heather and Carly. I have never had anything but very courteous, attentive, friendly and knowledgeable service from these two women. I have come to know both of them and consider them good friends. But I guess some folks in west Seattle feel like they deserve to be waited on hand and foot, please stay home, as we patrons do not need u picking apart every little thing your server does or doesn't do to treat you like the goddess you believe you are. These two women work very hard to try to please even some of the bitchy customers out there, you know who you are! read more

This is a PSA!!! I'll just start by saying the food was Good ruined by the horrible service! This is my first review for a place and I hate to be a downer but this place actually lit a fire of fury in the pit of my stomach I was that upset with the service. What's so sad is that everyone I've met in Seattle is so nice and you would think that the i would get that same welcoming feeling from someone who gets paid to do that but definitely not. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL SERVICE!!! It took 10 +minutes to get greeted and when I flagged our server CARLY down she responds with a sassy mocking wave back. And she saw us when we walked in . She was walking toward us like she was about to greet us but instead pushes in a chair at an empty table then turns around (NOTE*** couldn't miss us we were in neon pink jackets.) Then at the end of our experience there she says shes got her hands too full to get our check that we have to walk to her ... Cause yet again we are waiting and waiting for her to collect the bill. (***NOTE***the place was not even busy, open tables everywhere) CARLY WAS AWFUL (and apparently Heather too) She should Not be in customer service!!!! Recommendation: TERMINATION !!!!! A tip reflects your service and CARLYS service did NOT warrant a tip. Shes lucky I have nicer friends for the tip she did get. My advice is She should work in an ice cream shop in the middle of winter it's easy peazy. I would say don't let her bring down your restaurant but as I was reading through other reviews I'm pretty sure the owner just continues to let this go on and comes up with an excuse for his poor service. Most frequently used excuse I saw was " you must have come in on a off day". If you go, better hope its a good day. It seems they don't care for any new customers. I thought ALL CUSTOMERS MATTER!!!!. I was put off by the foul language used here. Service was slow. I sat with an empty glass and bottle for a good while. There was a shrimp tail in my fried pickles. The sauce in my entree (lemon caper chicken) was lacking. They have great chicken and waffles though. It's 21+. Very dark. Parking is easy as there are two parking lots plus offstreet parking. This place is on the corner so it's easy to spot and easy to get to. I chose it as I felt I was nearing the end of the street and restaurant options seemed to get more scarce. I would recommend take away. Service just wasn't good and the way in which the workers behaved was not professional. read more

I've never understood what having a favorite bar is till I came to this place. Great service and food, always! I feel so lucky to live close to a bar I feel so comfortable in and to always know I'll get yummy dishes and really nice service. As a server, I love visiting other great bars. Well, I would love to write an honest review on how the food is at this restaurant, but I can't because my friend and I did not get that far. We walked in the place and it was not to busy. There were plenty of table tops and there was plenty of room at the bar to sit. We decided to sit down at a table top. For about 10 minutes no one greeted us or acknowledged that we were even alive. No one said "hey we will be right with you" or something like that as typical restaurants do. So after about 10 minutes and no menus, no server, no nothing. I decided to go to the bar and see if I the bartender would acknowledge me and ask me if she could help me. After about two minutes of standing there, I walked to the server's station and asked the server for two menus because the bartender clearly did NOT want to help me. I believe her name is "Dana". She handed them to me and told me that it would probably be better if I went to the bar because it would be faster. I go back and sit down at the table top with my friend. This would make sense if the place was packed like a bunch of sardines in a can, but it was not. Anyone could come in and find somewhere to sit easily. About another 5 minutes go by, "Dana" finally comes over to our table. We get two drinks and two glasses of water. "Dana" brings us our drinks, but never returned to take our food orders! Not because she was working diligently but because she simply did NOT want our business. We saw her chit chatting with a few of the customers. We saw her take orders for people that came in well after us! This was blatant disrespect to say the least! "Dana" made it very clear that her mind was already made up well before we arrived that she would was not going to take our orders for whatever reason that may be. I let my friend know that we were not going to eat there because of what was happening. The customer service was piss poor by all the people that were working there because none of them helped. I have my theories of why "Dana" chose not to wait on us is because I am a black male, and my friend is a white female. I do not think that this is the case because there are numerous nationalities that live in Seattle. My friend would not take me to a place that has subpar customer service or a place that has racists servers/bartenders. So I am perplexed as to why "Dana" chose NOT to do her job??? Walked in on a Saturday night with 6 friends after walking 7 blocks on a recommends in the group. We walked in and sat down to a pretty dead bar considering it was a Saturday night. The bartender called across the bar to our table that we were not able to bring outside drinks into the bar. My friend gave him the coffee cup he brought in from the walk. The bartender, Ryan, then told the entire table that we were "shady" and how dare us bring in alcohol from the street to drink in the bar. The coffee cup had no beer In it and was voluntarily given to the bartender. The bartender approached the table and said we were not welcome to order and needed to leave. This was my first experience at this bar and I will never return. What I think is worse is that the actions of a pretentious bartender cost the establishment not only our business, but also the business of every friend of mine in the area. How you treat customers and approach issues is as important as food quality and this bar had lost all future business based on how myself and my six friends were treated. read more

I like to corrupt people. Or, to put in another way, spread the decadence. So, after an evening of drinking flight after flight of barleywine down at Beveridge, we needed sustenance. Desperately. Not only did I introduce one member of my trio entourage to the wonderful world of barleywine, but I managed to introduce both to the equally wonderful world of poutine. Is there anything better than a mound of french fries, bathed in savory brown gravy, studded with salty cheese curds? Highly doubtful...unless you're entirely sober. In which case, yes. But in which case, there might be other equally tempting options on Shadowland's menu, like a baguette with cucumber and brie, or a tasty half-chicken, or a piled-high-on-marbled-rye pastrami sandwich? Or Ninkasi's Total Domination IPA? Ah, yes. Never too much barleywine for me to still have Ninkasi.... And can't complain about plenty of open space and a back booth on a Saturday night, friendly service, and the short yet inclusive (carnivore and veggie friendly) menu! While my sojourns to West Seattle are few, it's good to know I have a stop to make on the way home. read more

Update to 12/2010 review. Thought I updated my review since then, as I've been here numerous times for a dinner or just drinks. Revised rating is 3.5 stars. Rounding up to 4 stars because Yelp! minded people would say "You are so lame, you want to go to Shadowland and you only gave them three stars!" Thus out of self preservation, 4 stars it is. Reasons for inflating the rating from 2 stars in 2010 to 3.5/4 stars today: * I don't want dirty looks anymore when Shadowland is involved. * I feel bad for being tardy in revising my rating. * The menu has matured while still staying eclectic, but not getting annoyingly unnaturally irreverent. I wish I could replace "menu" with "West Seattle" but that's the subject of another review. * The Jalapeno Mac-N-Cheese, Artichoke dip, Chicken Chili things are excellent comfort foods. Most of the items on the menu are good. Not stuff to write home about. The creativity in the dishes is delivered well. * Drinks are plenty stiff and the bartenders are better than average. * Staff is always congenial and service is consistently unobjectionable. * While the wine list is usually not too different than what you will see at Applebees, the pricing mark up is fitting with the quality (i.e. bottle prices are reasonable). * They are open past 10:00 PM. FOOD POISONING!!!!!!!!!!!! BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My wife and I went there a few days ago and I now have enough energy after recuperating from hours on the toilet to finally write a review. First off, the ambience is cool and has a dark mystique nature to it. Its a joint to go for happy hour or a drink, but the beers we got were flat. Not a great start, but given the rave reviews we decided to stay and order some food. We ordered the mac and cheese to share, I ordered the cheese burger with bacon, my wife ordered the roasted chicken. We both shared the mac and cheese after reading the rave reviews from fellow yelpers and boy oh boy did we pay the price. Even at first, the presentation of the mac and cheese was questionable. The mac and cheese was creamy and soupy. We both thought the presentation was odd and commented we preferred to have our mac and cheese with a slight burnt overlying crust and the cheese to be stringy. Decent, not great, but we bought it so we ate it. Strike 1. Next my cheese burger arrived without the bacon. I politely inquired about the bacon and the waiter promptly brought out 2 pencil thin pieces of bacon that were burnt to a crisp. Good response by the waiter but I prefer well cooked juicy bacon. Strike 2. My wife received her roasted chicken next. Now, before we ordered the waiter informed us it would take 25 min to roast, so we thought, ok this should be good given the long time to prepare. Well, it just sucked. The chicken was way overcooked to the point of being dry and rubbery and it tasted like oven baked chicken rather than a properly roasted chicken. Strike 3. Our bill with tip totaled $70. Not cheap eh.... Day 1 post-shadowland = wife has nausea and abdominal cramps, it progresses to watery diarrhea and tops off with a body fever that keeps her in bed all day. In the afternoon I start to feel nauseous at work but try not to think about it and just work through it via multiple trips to the bathroom. By evening, both of us were stuck in bed, writhing with abdominal cramps, fever, and you guessed it, intractable diarrhea. Boy oh boy did I feel bad for our dog, thank god we don't have kids yet. Day 2 post-shadowland = wife feels slightly better but can't eat due to nausea, taking tylenol like candy and chugging gatorade. I am beat down and can't even get out of bed, call in sick. My first sick day in 5 years. Day 3 post-shadowland = wife feels better and goes to work, she's able to eat. I force myself out of bed and self treat with tylenol and gatorade; I go to work but still am making visits to my dear old friend = el bano. Day 4 post-shadowland = I finally have enough energy to call Shadowland to give feedback about my experience and told them I am pretty sure it was the mac and cheese that made my wife and I acutely ill with gastroenteritis. The person accepting the call apologized and said a manager would call me that night. I received no call. Day 5 post-shadowland = no call from manager again. Day 6 post-shadowland = no call from manager, yet again. Day 7 post-shadowland = given that I depend on Yelp for guidance I felt obligated to contribute this warning. DO NOT EAT AT SHADOWLAND.....IF YOU DO......BUYER BEWARE!!!!! Oh yeah, plus their beer is flat! read more

I happened to be at Shadowland at that same time, and witnessed the interaction of the group, and the server. I have to commend the server for her patience, and professionalism in dealing with this obnoxious, rude, belligerently drunk group. Kudos to Mara for the way in which she professionally and calmly dealt with this group. No person should have to suffer the abuse that this group bestowed upon her.
