The male bartender on the night of 4/24 was super rude and acting very passive aggressive towards a lot of the bars patrons. It was my first time going there and it made my group and others at the bar feel very uncomfortable. We have never seen service so bad and because of that particular bartender I will never go back there . I'm not sure if he was having a bad day, but he definitely ruined the night for all of us. Most of the food is really good. 2. There is a free parking lot up the street and a short walk to Shadowland. Also there is a back entrance that most people don't know about. You just walk down the stairs and through the door from the back. 3. It has a nice atmosphere. Cons: 1. The service is a little lacking. I don't know if the waitresses are waiting on too many tables or if they are not properly trained but it takes awhile to get anything like refills or condiments. Had a really bad experience tonight. Walked in, grabbed a table in need of a wipe/clearing but we checked in with the server prior to taking the table. That was the only time we ever had the pleasure of speaking with her. It seemed there was only 1 person working the floor and 1 behind the bar. After sitting at the dirty table for 15min without so much as a hello, a menu or an apology for the wait/service, we simply left. I'm giving 2 stars because this is a strange experience as we've been to Shadowland a dozen times and never had a taste as bad as this left in our mouth. Having worked several years in the bar industry as both a consultant and a general manager, your bartender, Andrew, has been everything that I would personally look for in a bartender myself. From his time spent carrying conversation throughout the bar with guests (something that is rare in Seattle and I value the most in a bartender), maintaining his bar, his pleasant demeanor, and his wealth of knowledge regarding his craft - Andrew truly sticks out in your business as a team player and someone who his passionate about his job as a bartender here at Shadowland. His handshake after closing my check only cemented my thought and action on reviewing Shadowlands after my several visits having recently just moved to West Seattle. My previous visits have been nothing short of exceptional either. The food and service is always excellent regardless of how busy your establishment is. I've been to Shadowland many times, it's one of my favorite places in West Seattle! They have one of the best happy hours out there. The pork tacos, the lettuce boats, the FRIED PICKLE CHIPS (yes you heard me right) are all amazing. My favorite part about Shadowland? They always serve their Moscow mules in a copper mug, every single time. Oh and the Monday night trivia is fantastic! Walked in on a Saturday night with 6 friends after walking 7 blocks on a recommends in the group. We walked in and sat down to a pretty dead bar considering it was a Saturday night. The bartender called across the bar to our table that we were not able to bring outside drinks into the bar. My friend gave him the coffee cup he brought in from the walk. The bartender, Ryan, then told the entire table that we were "shady" and how dare us bring in alcohol from the street to drink in the bar. The coffee cup had no beer In it and was voluntarily given to the bartender. The bartender approached the table and said we were not welcome to order and needed to leave. This was my first experience at this bar and I will never return. What I think is worse is that the actions of a pretentious bartender cost the establishment not only our business, but also the business of every friend of mine in the area. How you treat customers and approach issues is as important as food quality and this bar had lost all future business based on how myself and my six friends were treated. read more

But in which case, there might be other equally tempting options on Shadowland's menu, like a baguette with cucumber and brie, or a tasty half-chicken, or a piled-high-on-marbled-rye pastrami sandwich? Or Ninkasi's Total Domination IPA? Ah, yes. Never too much barleywine for me to still have Ninkasi.... And can't complain about plenty of open space and a back booth on a Saturday night, friendly service, and the short yet inclusive (carnivore and veggie friendly) menu! FOOD POISONING!!!!!!!!!!!! BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My wife and I went there a few days ago and I now have enough energy after recuperating from hours on the toilet to finally write a review. First off, the ambience is cool and has a dark mystique nature to it. Its a joint to go for happy hour or a drink, but the beers we got were flat. Not a great start, but given the rave reviews we decided to stay and order some food. We ordered the mac and cheese to share, I ordered the cheese burger with bacon, my wife ordered the roasted chicken. We both shared the mac and cheese after reading the rave reviews from fellow yelpers and boy oh boy did we pay the price. Even at first, the presentation of the mac and cheese was questionable. The mac and cheese was creamy and soupy. We both thought the presentation was odd and commented we preferred to have our mac and cheese with a slight burnt overlying crust and the cheese to be stringy. Decent, not great, but we bought it so we ate it. Strike 1. Next my cheese burger arrived without the bacon. I politely inquired about the bacon and the waiter promptly brought out 2 pencil thin pieces of bacon that were burnt to a crisp. Good response by the waiter but I prefer well cooked juicy bacon. Strike 2. My wife received her roasted chicken next. Now, before we ordered the waiter informed us it would take 25 min to roast, so we thought, ok this should be good given the long time to prepare. Well, it just sucked. The chicken was way overcooked to the point of being dry and rubbery and it tasted like oven baked chicken rather than a properly roasted chicken. Strike 3. Our bill with tip totaled $70. Not cheap eh.... Day 1 post-shadowland = wife has nausea and abdominal cramps, it progresses to watery diarrhea and tops off with a body fever that keeps her in bed all day. In the afternoon I start to feel nauseous at work but try not to think about it and just work through it via multiple trips to the bathroom. By evening, both of us were stuck in bed, writhing with abdominal cramps, fever, and you guessed it, intractable diarrhea. Boy oh boy did I feel bad for our dog, thank god we don't have kids yet. Day 2 post-shadowland = wife feels slightly better but can't eat due to nausea, taking tylenol like candy and chugging gatorade. I am beat down and can't even get out of bed, call in sick. My first sick day in 5 years. Day 3 post-shadowland = wife feels better and goes to work, she's able to eat. I force myself out of bed and self treat with tylenol and gatorade; I go to work but still am making visits to my dear old friend = el bano. Day 4 post-shadowland = I finally have enough energy to call Shadowland to give feedback about my experience and told them I am pretty sure it was the mac and cheese that made my wife and I acutely ill with gastroenteritis. The person accepting the call apologized and said a manager would call me that night. I received no call. Day 5 post-shadowland = no call from manager again. Day 6 post-shadowland = no call from manager, yet again. Day 7 post-shadowland = given that I depend on Yelp for guidance I felt obligated to contribute this warning. I happened to be at Shadowland at that same time, and witnessed the interaction of the group, and the server. I have to commend the server for her patience, and professionalism in dealing with this obnoxious, rude, belligerently drunk group. Kudos to Mara for the way in which she professionally and calmly dealt with this group. No person should have to suffer the abuse that this group bestowed upon her. This is a PSA!!! I'll just start by saying the food was Good ruined by the horrible service! This is my first review for a place and I hate to be a downer but this place actually lit a fire of fury in the pit of my stomach I was that upset with the service. What's so sad is that everyone I've met in Seattle is so nice and you would think that the i would get that same welcoming feeling from someone who gets paid to do that but definitely not. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL SERVICE!!! It took 10 +minutes to get greeted and when I flagged our server CARLY down she responds with a sassy mocking wave back. And she saw us when we walked in . She was walking toward us like she was about to greet us but instead pushes in a chair at an empty table then turns around (NOTE*** couldn't miss us we were in neon pink jackets.) Then at the end of our experience there she says shes got her hands too full to get our check that we have to walk to her ... Cause yet again we are waiting and waiting for her to collect the bill. (***NOTE***the place was not even busy, open tables everywhere) CARLY WAS AWFUL (and apparently Heather too) She should Not be in customer service!!!! Recommendation: TERMINATION !!!!! A tip reflects your service and CARLYS service did NOT warrant a tip. Shes lucky I have nicer friends for the tip she did get. My advice is She should work in an ice cream shop in the middle of winter it's easy peazy. I would say don't let her bring down your restaurant but as I was reading through other reviews I'm pretty sure the owner just continues to let this go on and comes up with an excuse for his poor service. Most frequently used excuse I saw was " you must have come in on a off day". If you go, better hope its a good day. It seems they don't care for any new customers. I thought ALL CUSTOMERS MATTER!!!!. Came in on a Saturday night after one of the outdoor movies. Granted not everyone in our group was well versed in the ways of classy establishments and ordered jagerbombs, the look of disdain by the waitresses face when she asked for our ids was incredibly rude. I'm all for knowing when and where something should take place but as a waitress, there's no reason for being rude. EVER. It's not like we were asking for outrageous things I ordered a dirty vodka martini and it came back completely dry. Not an ounce of olive juice. I ordered more olive juice but it wasn't the same. The only redeeming quality about this place was the jalapeno mac and cheese. So bomb. Not sure if that's enough for me to come back but if I wander in on a drunken night I might order some jagerbombs for the hell of it. :) read more

I have never had pickle chips before, but now I have been changed for life. They are amazing here. And with a catfish Ruben with one of their delicious cocktails, its amazing. I was one fat happy kid! I cant wait to go back and try more. The drinks are amazing, loving the jalapeno margarita. The staff is great, very friendly. Lots of great seating for groups. Okay. So I've lived in West Seattle for 3 years now. Can't say I'm a huge fan of any establishment, honestly. WS is strange. (Yeah, Captain Obvious here) but things close early, food is generally blase as is service and diversity of choice, it can be pretty beige here. Or worse...They all have pretty huge drawbacks and mostly I just drive into town now due to the repeated disappointment I experience in WS. So I go out a great deal and feel now I have a pretty good grasp of the Seattle "thing". Reading through these posts I would have to concur on the primary complaint: service. Of the some dozen or so times I've decided to give Shadowland a go I have spent 10 sitting for more than 20 minutes at the bar being all but completely ignored. Actually it's worse the one bartender who likes to boast about his athletic history will actually make repeated eye contact with me and in this passive-aggressive fashion just fail to ask me for my order. It's incredible. He is by far and away the worst bartender I've ever encountered. He may make a decent drink but that could never make up for the dumbfounding disdain for the customers. Look, I tip well, never cause a scene, order wine mostly and pretty much just chill in my corner. I have been known to sit with my credit card out trying desperately to pay for over 40 mins at this establishment while I just get walked past...and I still tipped the Neanderthal. That said: the food is pretty solid. The happy hours are decent, though 6 p.m. can be a tight one for working stiffs. The late night one makes up for it. There are, in fact, a couple of bartenders that have surprised me. Even noticing me from across the bar and doting on me trying to learn my preferences and taking time to engage me, and ensure I am taken care of. Um. I am pretty low maintenance and I understand the Seattle freeze thing. But the service industry is that: service. I don't abide asshats not should the servers or bartenders I dig that. And WS can be filled with the worst douches (outside of Lake Union... Parts of Capital Hill or Belltown....) But please, try not to alienate those of us who are trying to be respectful of how hard you work. That helps tremendously. So go on a night when Andy (best service, personable, and never idly passive) is working. Probably one of the more attentive bartenders in the city. (I have a handful of nominees in this category as I have been generally pretty lucky with bartenders it seems, based on what others tell me.) I also have had good luck with the female bartenders here (sorry I don't know their names!) The few times I've interacted with them they've appeared to be diligent in their work ethic and personable. I was put off by the foul language used here. Service was slow. I sat with an empty glass and bottle for a good while. There was a shrimp tail in my fried pickles. The sauce in my entree (lemon caper chicken) was lacking. They have great chicken and waffles though. It's 21+. Very dark. Parking is easy as there are two parking lots plus offstreet parking. This place is on the corner so it's easy to spot and easy to get to. I chose it as I felt I was nearing the end of the street and restaurant options seemed to get more scarce. I have been coming to shadowland for years, I think the bar staff and the waiters do a very good job. The food is great and it's one of the best happy hour menus in west Seattle. As I sit and read the reviews, I cannot help but be troubled by some of the very hurtful and negative reviews about several of the servers, namely Heather and Carly. I have never had anything but very courteous, attentive, friendly and knowledgeable service from these two women. I have come to know both of them and consider them good friends. But I guess some folks in west Seattle feel like they deserve to be waited on hand and foot, please stay home, as we patrons do not need u picking apart every little thing your server does or doesn't do to treat you like the goddess you believe you are. I went Shadowlands twice this week. Once in the deep hours of a Monday night and then the early evening of Tuesday. The two things that stood out were the high price point of everything on the menu and the pleasant and informed service we received. The food was not fantastic with the exception of the beautiful oysters we had on both occasions and the delicious chocolate torte dessert. The burger seemed a bit pretentious, as it had a 6 inch skewer sticking out of it with a pickle spear, olive and mushroom on it. What are these for? The bun was not the right size for the burger, and the toppings seemed to be lacking and wilted. The poutine was interesting, although I am not sure something like this needs to ever be served in a restaurant. And I'm sorry to say, someone needed to change the fryer oil. The last thing we had was a vin santo served with biscotti cookies. The vin santo came in a lovely glass and tasted wonderful. However, between the three of us we were not able to finish even one of the two cookies, as they were quite badly made. The food was definitely hit and miss. When we came in at 5 on Tuesday we had hoped to catch some sort of happy hour, as the bar and two extremely large televisions implied to us, "this place has happy hour." Not so! We dropped on $70, three drinks (not cocktails) and three appetizers and a burger. I do not mind spending money, but it just seemed really overpriced for the place and product. And I definitely think a place that is so expensive should have a happy hour! A note on the service: Both of the servers we had we well informed about the menu, were helpful, and really nice.
