So this mission tacos service has went completely down hill. Went today Febuary 15th and the whole staff is different I even heard one of the waiters say he was waiting on a table "full of bitches". Just sad. I sat at the bar at least 15 minutes before anyone even acknowledged I was sitting there. I spend too much of money here and to make matters the worse it could be, when the bartender finally did come over to take orders he took the white guy next to me who had just sat down. Ah, Mission Taco. I've been here for taco happy hour more times than I can count- the $2 late night tacos and tequila shots have been both a great opener (oops) and closer of a night out. Now, for the star: the tacos. I think I've tried every single one on the current menu and my favorites are definitely the habenero chicken (perfectly spicy and balanced, and who doesn't like fried chicken with alcohol?), as well as the duck (uniqueness factor and the sweet sauce is delicious, IMO). I also recommend the chips and salsa- the deal is unbeatable and the salsa verde (they also give a more traditional salsa, don't worry) is perfect. The service at this location has always been a little spotty for me, particularly at the bar. But considering it's always jam packed, it's not the end of the world. That usually results in thinking time, and more tacos, but for $2... I'll definitely be back here for more night caps--this place isn't any ordinary taco joint. read more

Enjoyed lunch here today. We tried several different tacos. The shrimp taco was my absolute favorite. The mango salsa and the mango-hop-anero aioli stole the show. The Baja fried fish taco was my next favorite. Again, the baja chipotle sauce was the game changer here. Third place goes to the special of the day, chicken chimichurri. Very flavorful but I thought the chicken was a little dry. Last place would be the Carne Asada, simply because they forgot to add the sauce and it was very dry and flavorless. Great location, average food. Logistically, this restaurant is located in the heart of the CWE and parking is accordingly difficult/expensive. I went to Mission Taco on a Saturday night with a group of six. We were surprisingly able to be seated promptly as it was not too busy. Wait staff was initially extremely attentive, and came to our table several times within minutes before we were ready to order. We were then abandoned for quite some time with no water, which was unfortunate. Of the menu items, the appetizers are definitely the best part. I really enjoyed the mushroom taco as well, which is a non-traditional and refreshing taco with goat cheese, mushrooms, and arugula. I also got the chorizo taco, which was fairly spicy with a somewhat offputting texture (to me at least). My friends got the spicy margs and said they were tasty and definitely had a strong spicy kick. Overall, there are probably better places you can go in the CWE, but I'd come back just for the mushroom taco and some appetizers. read more

This is a fun place to eat with a lot of decent options on the menu. The menu wasn't super descriptive in what to expect from some of the choices when it comes to spiciness. I was a little surprised to get a burrito that was way spicier than I would have expected (three little piggies). My wife's taco was also really spicey. Cool place but food was not so good. I love Mexican and have never sent anything back. Until now. Totally bummed me out. I got big burrito with carna (steak) meat. It was tough and as fat as a little piggy. The cheese sauce on top was equally as disappointing. Everyone else got tacos and said the fish ones were the only good choice. Fancy fusion tacos are my guilty pleasure! We checked out Mission Taco Joint mainly because they were close to the are that we had parked and because they were open late. We honestly didn't know too much about this taco joint but it ended up being one of my our favorite meals during our stay in St.Louis! We got there right at Happy Hour so we were able to get our tacos for cheap. Between the two of us, we ordered 5 tacos to share and a side of corn (elote). Habanero Chicken (crispy yucatecan marinated chicken breast, cilantro-lime crema, shredded purple cabbage, pickled tomatillo salsa): We thought the chicken breast actually had some really great flavor and the tomatillo salsa really brought it altogether. However, the chicken was a little on the dry side which was a little disappointing. Still enjoyable though. Mango-Hop-Anero Shrimp (IPA battered shrimp, red cabbage slaw, fresh mango salsa, smashed avocado, Mango-Hop-Anero aioli): This was delicious! It had a nice heat running through it from the habanero and the shrimp was really crispy even though it was covered in slaw AND salsa. We really enjoyed it and probably would have ordered another one of these if we didn't have more tacos to eat. Baja Fish (wood-fire grilled, chipotle baja sauce, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, queso fresco): We are from California meaning that we've eaten our fair share of fish tacos. With that said, I enjoyed their fish taco. My husband didn't think it was anything special but I appreciated that the fish was cooked properly and the ingredients all tasted fresh. Beef Brisket Birria (Slow roasted brisket, pork belly carnitas, avocado, fiery arbol sauce): My husband absolutely loved this taco but he loves carnitas in general. My main complaint with this particular taco was that it was too greasy. When I bit into it, a lot of oil dripped out which i didn't like but the flavor was pretty good. I liked their hot sauce on it. Spicy Chorizo (house made chorizo sausage, fresh avocado, wood-fire grilled pineapple pico de gallo, pickled jalapeno, cilantro-lime crema): I don't really like chorizo that much but I really liked it in this taco. The pineapple pico de gallo really helped lighten up the dish for me and bring in some new flavors. Fresh avocado always helps too and this was no exception. I also found this taco to be on the greasy side but it was pretty good. Street Corn "Off The Cob" (grilled and tossed in garlic-lime mayo w/ queso fresco): I know that this dish says that it's off the cob but it tasted just like canned corn. Not to say that it didn't taste good but it was really bland and it really didn't taste fresh. I'll probably pass on this next time since it was also very expensive. Overall, I would definitely come back for their tacos. Go during happy hour to get the best bang for your buck! I would stick to the tacos and steer away from their sides. Don't get me wrong, this place wasn't horrible! They have $2 tacos and shots during their happy hour! That was the only reason I wanted to go, besides the fact that I was starving, and it was my homegirls birthday! Uh yasss, let's get into these $2 shots and call it a night. Me, being the hungry hippo that I am, chose the shrimp, portobello mushroom and cho-fu tacos, and also got some street corn on the side! Out of those 3 tacos, I would only ever try the shrimp one again. Cho-fu has soy chorizo... and it just wasn't vibing with my taste buds... at all. The street corn was okay. This place is very popular, so make sure to check in on Open Table. My only criticism is that they don't provide chips and salsa free for the table- an order is $4. And, if you have picky eaters, be warned: most of the tacos are on corn tortillas. Mission isn't cheap-- it's trendy and popular with a younger crowd. But it's fun and good food for sure!! read more

Came from out of town for work and met up with friends to explore a non-downtown area, Euclid area was awesome, and the outdoor/sidewalk seating here at Mission was pretty cool and relaxing for a Friday night. The food was pretty average. I admit my Texan bias, I know good tacos; I think I had a duck taco that was pretty good. 6.5/10. Also had a torta ahogada that was also about 6.5/10. It wasn't really ahogada (drowned), it was more like topped. A drowned torta is exactly what it sounds like, messy, soggy, but delicious. I will say the torta was tasty, but the sauce was more of a salsa (almost like pasta sauce texture) instead of the thinner version they would use in Mexico, so it just sat on top of the sandwich instead of soaking it like it should. Anyways, the food wasn't bad, but didn't knock my socks off of my feet. In fact my feet were firmly socked the entire time. Service was good though, decent draft list, good ambiance. read more

The Central West End location is the best! I come here quite often for the $2 Tequilla and Tacos. It happens every night from 10-close (I believe at every location). The staff is extra friendly and the food is always good. My personal favorite tacos are the Mango-hop-anero Shrimp and the Baja Fish (Fried). The Shrimp taco comes with red cabbage slaw, delicious mango salsa, puréed avocado and a unique homemade habanero aioli. The Baja Fish is beer battered (grilled is an option) with chipoltle sauce, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, and quest fresco. I'd say I'm here about every week and it never disappoints! I went with the fish taco (grilled) and mango shrimp taco. Based on everyone else's reactions these were the two best on the menu and for a very good reason. These tacos were delicious. Both of them just had it all right. Had I been hungrier, I would have ordered three more. I also tasted the soy Taco and it was good and spicy. We got churros and chocolate sauce as desert and the churros were fresh and hot and it was the perfect end to a meal. What I'm saying is, I get the mission taco hype. Mission Taco is a hot spot in STL. For whatever reason everybody and their mom loves this place. For me, I'm just not a huge fan of street tacos. Now I obviously can't base my review off of a personal preference, so all in all Mission Taco really is a good place. They have great queso, hefty margaritas, and I had a loaded burrito that was HUGE but delicious and good for left overs. The inside is fun and colorful and each location is in a relatively busy area which makes a good place to have dinner or just a drink during a fun night out with friends or family. If you're looking for one of a kind food, I wouldn't come here, but if you're looking for a one of a kind experience this is a good choice for you. read more

I was in STL for work and decided to check out this place for dinner. It was a Wednesday night, I got street parking and sat at the bar. The menu looked great but not a ton of vegetarian options. My server was friendly and helped me choose between a taco or the empanadas. I ordered the wild mushroom empanadas. I would have loved to have a drink or two... But I was too exhausted, did not have a designated driver and being a lightweight with my liquor I wasn't taking any chances. The empanadas were delicious - crispy outside shell, nice gooey cheese on the inside. I pretty much inhaled it. Well then do something silly. I told the mgr and they still charged us and I refused to pay. Never done that ever but this will upset my stomach and I'm not happy about paying for that. This is not my first visit to Mission Taco but it will most likely be my last. I'm not even going to talk about the wannabe hipster menu. Except to say if you aren't going to serve salsa at least have all 3 of your bottled sauces available at each table. Let's discuss service or the complete lack of. We were greeted eventually by our server today who seemed to care less about our ordering or his hygiene. He wasn't smelly, just dirty...maybe this one was having a bad day. He delivered the water & eventually my soda. Then 15 min later out came the food. And like a Tinder date gone incredibly awry he ghosted us for the remainder of our dining experience. Remember how I said they should have all 3 sauces on each table well I had to flag down another of the waitstaff to get those. Finally, as if on queue, just as my girlfriend pushed our plates to the edge of the table our Tinder Waiter showed up to get us the bill. No refills. No how was the meal. NOTHING. Just here you go... So a final word. If you serve ok tacos maybe your service should be better than just crap. Now the majority of my taco business will goto Taco Circus. This might be the the most disappointing, horrific customer service I've ever experienced. My friends and I came here with plans to drink and get tacos at the late night happy hour, we got here at 11:45. Upon arriving we were greeted with hostile service, unfriendly employees, and a BAFFLING business model. Not only was it taboo to order food from the bar, the bar (charged with serving drinks) took at least 20 minutes to service us with our margaritas (they were okay). While this is a haunt that we've been to before, and cherished, the attitude that we were met with suggested that we were not only not welcome, but not at all wanted. In the same vain, it felt like we were intentionally neglected. The staff appeared not only wearisome to fulfill our request, but they were seemingly intentionally inaccurate, rolling their eyes at even the smallest of requests ("no ice".) I was excited to try this place with my friends, I'm Mexican and it's hard to find good Mexican food in St. Louis. The tacos were less flavorful yet more expensive than traditional Mexican. What really got me though was that they were cold :( the worst part is that I've been having uncomfortable stomach cramps for a couple days since going there. This review is definitely against the local grain - there is a lot of hype and praise coming out of the Mission restaurants, but frankly, I've yet to taste anything there that's worthy of a second pass. To preface, I've been to multiple locations, multiple times. Let's sidestep the fact that there's typically an outrageous wait for a table. Long lines frequently suggest good food, so don't let something like that scare you off. What has disappointed me on my numerous visits was the utter lack of authentic Mexican flavor. I know, I know - "We're not in Mexico, so that's not a fair comparison!" - but the truth is that we all deviate towards Mexican restaurants to get a taste of something different, outside of our familiar, commonplace culture. In my opinion, Mission Taco Joint is just an American restaurant masquerading as something else. Unfortunately, throwing meat, beans, and cheese into a tortilla and calling it "Mexican food" is not convincing in this situation. Of the multiple dishes I've tasted, I've experienced one of two things: they are either extremely overpowered by spiciness (in an assumed attempt to disguise a lack flavor), OR they have that aforementioned genuine lack of flavor. There is better and more affordable Mexican cuisine out in the city. But if you like long lines, uninspired food, and paying more than you expect, then take a place in line.
