This is the kind of place that charges for chips and salsa, so just keep that on mind. The chorizo queso ($7) had great flavor and was the perfect level of heat. It was pretty crowded for a Wednesday night which is a good sign. What started out as just a simple drop in and leave kind of meal turned into a stay awhile and hang out kind of meal. First off the just got Bells hopslam in on draught so that was already a must try. From there we ordered the chips and salsa. They provided two different salsa, there regular red salsa and a green tomatillo salsa. Both were delicious, the green was suppose to be spicier than the red. Both tasted the same heat wise. My wife spent the summer living in the CWE for work. I made several trips to visit on weekends and this place became a must visit for me. Stopped in for the first time at lunch on a hot day and sat at the bar to drink rum and eat tacos. Both were amazing. The staff is great, very friendly and the service is quick. Menu prices are very reasonable and for the price, the portions are perfect. Don't fill up on chips and salsa...though you'll be tempted. Perfectly prepared each time I've been and I have to stop myself so that I leave room for some tacos. If you're with a group, when the staff delivers your orders, they'll describe each taco for you so that you know which is which and then it's game on. I've seen the place absolutely packed on a weekend night and I've walked right up and sat down during lunch. Either way, it's well worth any wait you may have. This was my first visit to any of the poplar 'joints'. I am now a fan. On a whim, I decided to try the "New Year's Resolution" Burrito, although I'm a few months behind. My only complaint is that the wheat tortilla was kind of gummy. I am familiar with this type of tortilla, as I use it in my own work, and should have known better. This was even better than the burrito. I told our server to remind me next time to order 12 of them! The duck was tender and juicy and the BBQ sauce was a perfect compliment. The pickled onions on top were the perfect compliment. Back to the corn fritters; they were decent, but far from the highlight. They tasted like a corn dog without the meat; not too memorable. To drink, we tried the Paloma and the Margarita. Both were quite tasty and the perfect ratio of alcohol to mixers. Kudos to the bartender. Overall, a great experience. The ambiance is casual. What can I say? I love MTJ. This was my first visit to the CWE location an it's a really nice space. Ample table room and clean restroom! Tip: the restroom has a air dryer, so if you don't like to touch the door handle, take a napkin with ya! I tried their Peacemaker collaboration fried clam taco and I loved it. That slaw! I had the brah'rito which was filled with carne asada, chile-rubbed bacon, black beans, crema, fries, chihuahua cheese and was topped with pico de gallo and guac. The meat was soft and flavorful and the burrito was pretty sizable. The french fries added a weird flavor to the burrito though. I also felt pretty uncomfortable with our pushy waiter. Yummy and affordable this place has tacos in a variety of flavors. The Baja fish comes either grilled or battered and fried. The carne Asada was nothing special but solid for what it is. This is my favorite taco place in the entire world. I have moved to Chicago since graduating and leaving the city of St. Louis and for all the hype in Chicago about amazing food, have yet to find a place that even comes close to how delicious Mission Taco is. I also miss the prices- the $2 after 11 pm deal was what got me through my college years and honestly it's a tragedy that we don't have anything like it in Chicago. My absolute all-time favorite taco from here is the shrimp taco. I used to go late at night with my boyfriend and get 4 shrimp tacos for $8 total and it was the happiest thing in the world. It's called the Mango-Hop-Anero Shrimp and comes with beer battered shrimp, red cabbage slaw, fresh mango salsa, smashed avocado, and mango-hop-anero aioli. Literally the greatest gift God has blessed the Central West End with. Other amazing tacos- the carne asada (steak, baby arugula, queso fresco, avocado serrano sauce), portobello (mushrooms, goat cheese, crispy onions, arugula, smashed black beans, and huitlacoche aioli), BBQ duck (roasted duck, ancho-agave glaze, pork belly carnitas, smashed avocad, pickled onions, and jalepeno strips), and the baja fish (wood fire grilled or beer btatered, chipotle baja sauce, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, and queso fresca). Honestly all of their tacos are sexy and delicious though. Like I am writing this contemplating whether I made the biggest mistake of my life by moving away to a city that does not in fact have a Mission Taco.
