Gorgeous restaurant with an unmatched outdoor ambiance, I felt like I was back in Mexico or Florida (if I don't look at the parking lot, ha!) The food is a little pricey but yummy! After we were greeted with chips and spicy salsa, we ordered skinny margaritas (pretty good) and our entrees. I ordered the Quesabirra and my husband ordered the free range chicken. I loved the Quesabirra. While listed as an app, plenty for an entree - four hearty tacos. The chicken was also huge (half a chicken), and it was sauced but my husband said it tasted bland. My family and I visited The Mexican STL for the first time, and I have to say, the atmosphere was absolutely amazing...From the moment we walked in, the customer service was top-tier. We were greeted quickly and immediately seated, upon being seated we were served waters, chips, and salsa promptly. The restaurant itself is stunning and definitely creates a great atmosphere and cozy vibe. A special shout-out to our waiter, Mustache Sam, who was absolutely fantastic. He was upbeat, knowledgeable about the menu, and incredibly accommodating. Even though he was apologetic about the limited menu options, his excellent service truly stood out and made our experience better. Unfortunately, we were disappointed by a couple of things. For a Mexican restaurant, we were surprised that frozen margaritas were not available or an option. As a pescatarian, I also found the menu to be very limited, which made it difficult for me to find something appealing. We were looking forward to enjoying dinner there, but ultimately decided not to stay because the menu just did not meet our expectations. An incredible experience all around! We showed up on a Saturday night with no reservations and it was PACKED. We ended up sitting on the back patio ledge with a front row seat to the live entertainment out back. The service was top notch, regularly checking in and accommodating all our requests. After I sat down I was brought chips and salsa. The chips were a little warm which was nice. The salsa tasted different. I'm guessing by the smell that they add liquid smoke to the salsa because it has a smokey aroma. Whatever the ingredient was it changed the taste of the salsa and it was not enjoyable. That secret ingredient lasted a while on my palette. I ordered the chicken fajitas with all rice and no refried beans. The chicken was tender. Either they added that smokey ingredient to the chicken fajitas or that ingredient in the salsa continued to negatively impact the enjoyment of my meal. This is why I only gave 3 stars for the Food and for the overall rating. I sat at the bar and I received good service. She was really busy. The bar is two sided so the bartender was on the go. We visited on a Saturday evening, made reservations online ahead of time which is recommended. Our first cocktails were okay, the skinny marg was average and the New Fashion was a slow sipper, not as smooth as their traditional old fashioned. The classic marg and watermelon mint marg were both much better choices. The fajita filet was amazing, melted like butter in your mouth and the bone marrow was a great bonus. The wagyu flank came out overcooked the first time and was a bit tough. We sent it back and the second one was much better. The fries with it were average, better once soaked in the steak juice. Service was very polite and they comped one of our cocktails for the overcooked flank steak. But they only refilled our water glasses once and disappeared after that. The restaurant is very nice with multiple seating options, in the dining room, high tops, at the bar, and they have a great closed in patio that have garage style doors that can open in nice weather. Classy Mexican restaurant! There's a huge parking lot, so don't worry about parking. I would recommend to have reservations ahead of time. The place seems to be always busy. Our service was great! Chips and salsa we're brought to the table. Had to start off with the $50 Presidente margarita. Best margarita I've ever had and it better be for $50 - LOL! Then ordered the Baja shrimp (yummy) and the queso fundido. The queso is more thick and they bring out tortillas with it. It did look and tasted like the tortillas were homemade. For dinner we had the Alambre and fajita fillet. Both were good. Dessert we had the chocolate cake (Mexican chocolate) with the caramel salted ice cream and some chocolate martinis. went there for happy hour with a friend. they have a nice happy hour menu that includes snacks and drinks. it goes from 3p to 6p. we started with their margarita option which was delicious. we also had fish and beef tacos, fried queso and the chicken tetala. all were tasty. it's a beautiful place inside and out. i should have taken more photos. we had great service and a nice experience. the regular menu is pricey and not exactly what most people expect from a mexican restaurant in st. louis. i lived in Dallas for 12 yrs and am familiar with high end "mexican " food. we wanted a more affordable experience, that's why we stayed with the bar menu.... read more

What a great experience! I came here on the recommendation of a friend, and I definitely plan to return. Although I generally opt toward "hole in the wall" style Mexican restaurants, The Mexican STL is a great example of an upscale one done right. The ambience is pleasant, the staff are polite and helpful, and the food was all very good. I ordered the Asada tacos; the meat was slightly tough, but overall with excellent flavor, and tortillas were phenomenal. The rice and beans, street corn, and croquet was were all very good as well. I wanted to try dessert, but I was too full from all the food! They also have a decent size bourbon and tequila menu, with overall reasonable prices. I ordered a flight, and I was particularly impressed with the bar manager's generosity when offering substitutes for one of the items they had run out of. Once again, I wish we could give half stars! I would give this a 3.5. We had a reservation and were greeted and seated right away. It really wasn't as busy as I thought it would be, but there were still a decent number of people there. We were seated in one of two big dining areas. The bar area is also large. My husband got the Clásica margarita and said it was good - not too sweet, right amount of salt on the rim, and the balance was good. I got the Smokey Pineapple-Tini. It's made with mezcal. I really like mezcal and was a little disappointed that the mezcal was so light that I barely tasted it. Our server said people complained that it was too strong so they adjusted the recipe. I'm just saying I've never had a mezcal cocktail where I could barely taste it until last night! My husband got the Asada. It was three street taco sized tacos. He said it was good! I got the Mole Short Rib and it wasn't great. Also, I believe the menu should read Molé! The short ribs tasted like the meat when I make beef stew. I like my stew, but it doesn't taste like Mexican fare. And the molé didn't seem like a molé at all. It was a thin sauce that was not like any molé I've ever had - and not in a good way. Rice and black beans came with our entrees. I'm not into black beans, so they gave me double rice. On the plus side - the service was great! Our server was attentive, our water was always filled, more chips were offered because we had a half a bowl of small, broken pieces, etc. The executive chef stopped by and chatted. The vibe is great. The Mexican rice was decent. The Mexican Street Corn was okay. I've had much better. It was smokey at first bite. It moved to a sweet flavor then a hint of spice. It was my least favorite thing that I had. I won't get it again. But I can eat it. I had the wagyu flank steak. I dont believe it was actually wagyu. It was chewy and salty. That's not typical of wagyu. Normally it is very tender and flavorful. The saly took away from the beef. The chicken enchiladas was good, but not great. I had a Margarita and Sangria to drink. Our first visit was after about 3 weeks after they opened and needless to say, it was quite bumpy. Our food was delivered to a different table, we had to wait longer for our food to be remade, the appetizer we ordered (shishito bowl) smelled strongly of burnt plastic, and the flan was more akin to a cheesecake as far as texture goes (lacked the characteristic silky smoothness and jiggle of a flan but instead was more dense and firm). However, service was great and the manager was very apologetic and nice that I decided I needed to let a few more weeks go by before trying this place again. On Friday, after about 3 months of being open, we came back. Our reservation wasn't lost and we were quickly seated. To make sure we didn't have a repeat of last visit, we ordered different things. The one thing that we noted last visit was the fact that this place does make excellent cocktails. I started with spritz of sunshine and my husband had cowboy water. Cocktails were top notch as usual. Then we ordered some queso fundido to start. It was okay. The cheese was lukewarm and very thick, no flow for dipping but perfect for making roll ups since the dish did come with some tortillas. It needed more flavor though. I will add this to my list of things I won't order again. For my entrée, I had the alambre (skewered shrimp, wagyu beef, chicken, pork belly, peppers and squash and cheese all over. Delicious and well seasoned. If this is what I had the first time and prepared so well, I would have been sold right away. My husband had the barbacoa bowl over jalapeño rice, pickled red onions, and avocado salsa. He gave me a bite and I approve as it had excellent flavors. I could get these 2 dishes interchangeably in future visits and be happy. Lastly, we ordered the churros which was fried perfectly. I would get this again for dessert. Quick mention of the ambiance... the space is beautifu with modern decore, and has a more casual feel but also has that nice quality you seek from a place that would highly qualify as a date night location. Our most recent visit turned out to be the redeeming visit I was hoping for and for that, I am very glad. Definitely one of the best Mexican spots in the metro area. Upscale restaurant with full service bar. Menu features tacos, enchiladas and a few common items but also a surf and turf feature. You will not find most items like tamales, burritos or rellanos. The menu quickly jumps to pricier surf and turf features. Service was excellent. Chips and salsa were better than most places. There was a few screens showing a basketball game and music playing (modern music, not mariachi style). An absolutely amazing experience on my first visit here. The staff were so polite and personable! Shelly is a gem and management really does a top notch job! We were greeted and seated by, who I assume, was a manager. He was very fun, joking with us and even coming by our table a little later to see how we were doing. A bit later, another manager came by to greet us and thank us for coming in. Noticing that our drinks were getting low, she asked if we wanted another and personally delivered them. It's those little things that go a long way! The menu is amazing. So many delicious sounding dishes and drinks to choose from. I really had my eye on the Tuna but since we were there for a few drinks (Pink Pony...so good!) and maybe a little something, we opted for the tacos. They were good and filling. They really pile on the ingredients. The guacamole was really good too and I'd recommend ordering it to go with your chips. The salsa wasn't my favorite. Overall a very impressive first experience. The space is gorgeous and spacious. I'm really looking forward to coming back and trying that tuna and experiencing the Queso & Cantina happy hour menu. "The Mexican STL" is a new Mexican-American Fusion restaurant located in Crestwood, Missouri. It is owned by the Sybergs' Restaurant Group, who own many restaurant in the St. Louis area. We have heard extremely mixed reviews on The Mexican, so we decided to visit for a late lunch to form our own opinion. The atmosphere is quite nice, actually. It slightly reminded me of a hotel restaurant, with the patterned carpet and cushy chairs. The service was also friendly, but could have been more attentive. Our server stood in a circle chatting with other employees for minutes on end, which was kind of annoying. She was nice tho. The food was a mixed bag. The Chips and Salsa weren't very good, the chips were stale and the salsa was very spicy. We also split the Chopped Salad, which was pretty yummy. For entrees, I did the Asada Tacos which were good if not a bit too salty. My Mom did the Chicken Enchiladas. She wasn't a fan because she said the red sauce tasted like Marinara sauce. The best part was the atmosphere, but the service and food fell short for the price paid. I'm glad we got to try The Mexican, but I'm doubtful we will return. read more

My first observation, this place is huge and very well appointed. For a Wednesday evening at 5:30pm, it was not super busy but by the time I was leaving, the crowd was rolling in. Drinks - had The Mexican margarita with salt - EXCELLENT. Food - chips and salsa - fair but nothing amazing; pork belly tacos (3) that were flavorful. It is a nicely appointed place with a large bar area, large covered outside area with ceiling fans and a good size regular dining room which is where I sat. The lighting was dim for me and the menu had small print so I had to use my flashlight to read it. They played up beat modern Hispanic music which wasn't overly loud but made me want to dance in my seat. Our server was great he looked after us and was prompt. WOW!!! Food, atmosphere, and service all are FANTASTIC!!! We had a reservation, and were seating right on time. This location definitely has a great twist to the Mexican menu. We had the guacamole, Tuna Carpacio (with both the sauce for this and the Tuna Aguachile - we could not decide which on we wanted so the server suggested both sauces on the side). Dinner we had surf & surf (yes, 2 surfs and no turfs), and the CAMARON enchiliidas. Both were amazing! Oh and since we were on a roll, we also tried the brussel sprouts. Okay, so I have visited this location a few times now and while I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, I have just not been impressed with the food. Yes, the guac is tasty, but I really wish they had a different option for chips. The chips they bring out come in these tiny containers that 2-3 people easily finish quickly so it's best to just ask for more chips right away. I was also surprised to learn that they fry them in beef tallow since that is not really notated on the menu. The Brussel sprouts looked really good, but again they were also friend in tallow, but at least that was notated on the menu (unlike the chips). The location is convenient and the atmosphere inside is really nice. It's very fancy inside with some cool lighting and decor. Nothing like what you would expect at a Mexican restaurant. The host/hostess stand is right when you walk in and they will get you checked in. When they have space available on the patio, it's a great patio to eat/drink! I am not a fan of high top tables, but that's what they had available last time I went so we took it, but the chairs are just not quite right for a short person like me - my feet just dangle. I am glad the chairs have a back to them though, that makes it a little more comfy. Inside tables are mostly low (except the bar area) and the booth/chair options are comfy. They have lots of people making sure you have water at your table, but the glasses are just so small that I would rather they just leave the pitcher of water at the table for me to pour myself because having to wait for them to come back to refill my water was just a pain. The cocktail options are really nice and I do have to say the margaritas were really good. However, the food has not been my favorite. I was also disappointed in the main entree (chicken enchilladas) I ordered since everything was just really spicy to me. The menu does not indicate heat level and I can safely say, I was not expecting that heat. I know I am a wimp when it comes to spice, but honestly, even my dining partner who likes spice was saying that the enchiladas were too spicy. They also have rice as a side, but the rice is not plain white it comes with jalepeos chopped up so I could not even enjoy the rice. The menu says "Mexican rice", but they really should include a description of what that means so that I could have been more informed. The beans were okay, but nothing like what I would expect from a Mexican restaurant - they sort of felt dry and lacked any flavor. Yes, the service has been good during my visits and it's nice to have the manager walk around to greet tables and talk to customers, that was nice to see and experience, but the food was just not the best and I think they need to provide more details on ingredients on the menu so that customers can be more informed of the food items they order. read more

Gorgeous space, great food, sloooow service Last weekend, a few friends and I finally checked out The Mexican STL in Crestwood, and I've got thoughts. Atmosphere: The interior is stunning -- moody lighting, luxe finishes, and a bar that stretches across the room like it owns the place. There's a cool Day of the Dead wall for photos, and the overall vibe is elevated without being pretentious. Definitely a place that feels "special night out" worthy. Food: The menu isn't your standard Tex-Mex lineup. They're clearly going for an elevated Mexican dining experience. The guac and chips were fresh and flavorful, the salsa had a great kick, and the steak tacos were fantastic -- tender meat, great toppings, and balanced flavors. I also love that they're playing with higher-end ingredients like Wagyu and creative entrees. Drinks: Their cocktail game is strong. Everything we tried was smooth, balanced, and dangerously easy to sip. It's a place where you'll want to order a second round. Service: This is where things fell apart a bit. The service was painfully slow. We weren't in a rush, but it was noticeably delayed at almost every step. The Mexican STL is filling a void for excellent Mexican and filling the need for great restaurants in Crestwood. The Syberg family had already done Sunset Hills a solid with opening Twisted Tree--now just a little further down Watson they've created a gem of restaurant. We did not have reservations on Saturday night and decided to roll the dice--fully expecting to be turned away or have an awful wait. Neither happened. The host graciously greeted us and gave an estimated 45 minute wait time. We asked about drinks and were told that the outside rail was first come/first serve with wait service. We found seats and our server quickly introduced herself. We were offered chips and salsa while we waited for our margaritas. And before our drinks could arrive, we received a text that our table was ready. Our server inside the restaurant was as friendly as the one at the bar. We started with guacamole (very generous portion) and shared the shrimp enchiladas, tuna entree, and waygu flank steak. I enjoyed all three dishes, but the steak was my favorite. Each entree came with a serving of pico, black beans and rice. The restaurant itself is very spacious. There are several separate sections and the tables are spaced apart so you don't feel like you're sitting on top of each other. Ambiance is good! Food is mediocre. The guacamole is very bland no cilantro no jalapeño. The entrées are overpriced for a mediocre taco. SEVICE was just OK. Kind of felt like we were being rushed. Food and Drinks: I must be honest as expectations are highs! Unfortunately, the food fell flat. The dishes were under/not seasoned and didn't have a taste. Our flavor pallet was left underwhelmed. (See individual food reviews) However the bar was on point! The drinks were well made and flavorful! Suggestions: 1. Step the flavor profile up or offer flavor tiers for customer to choose from to cater to all customer. 2. Take the $50 margarita off the menu. Tried this place twice b/c a friend is always saying how she loves it. The first time and the second time weren't much different. The ambiance and drinks are pretty nice, but the food not so much. The service was great. The salsa is weird...it's kinda smoky and brown, but taste ok. We ordered the queso fundido...it was luke warm, but tasty. My friend and I ordered shrimp tacos. They were meh & overpriced. The rice and beans were the same as what you'd get at Chili's...no joke! If you're looking for ambience & tasty drinks, go for it, but don't expect your expensive meal to be any better than Chili's! read more

Love the patio, and they have a great happy hour! Service is always excellent. My only hesitation on going to this spot more often is it is very limited on vegetarian choices. (You even need to request chips not cooked in beef tallow-yikes) read more

As a Crestwood-ian, I am sooo happy to see so many local places popping up! I'm a big lover of Mexican food and was really looking forward to dining at this spot. We made a reservation and are so happy we did, it was super packed on a Saturday. The space itself is beautiful! The low lighting, decor, accents, and details are awesome. I loved the vibe. We ordered queso and it was a really awesome, authentic tasting dip with a side of tortillas. Loved rhe chorizo and peppers in there! My entree was the asada tacos which were super good, loved the avocado aioli on them and the tortillas were fresh. Loved that the cut of meat was wagyu. It came with a side of black beans and Mexican rice. We also shared a side of Brussels- sweet and spicy with the chipotle honey. The atmosphere was elegant, with dim lighting and vibrant murals covering the walls. The service was polite and attentive throughout our visit. We started with the Taquitos, which were so generous and flavorful they could easily stand as a full meal. For our entrée, my wife and I shared the Mole Short Rib. It was my first time trying mole with beef--an interesting twist that others might love, though I realized I still prefer my mole paired with chicken. For drinks, I ordered the Michelada, and my wife enjoyed the mocktail Peach Don't Kill My Vibe. Overall, it was a great first visit, and I'd definitely return to explore more of the menu. My only suggestion would be to elevate the flavors a bit--seasoning and marination can make a big difference. A beautiful space sets the stage, but the food needs to shine just as brightly. The Mexican is a more upscale mexican dining in STL. The chips and salsa are delicious. Service was decent but went for lunch and there was barely anyone there. Slightly overpriced for mexican. read more

Mexican STL is a bit different from what you might think when you hear Mexican food. It has the classics but they are definitely elevated; the menu features items like an espresso-cocoa rubbed Wagyu tomahawk and a $50 presidente margarita. The ingredients are high quality, but you will pay for it. The chips were good, and both the Brussels sprouts and the Alambre were well-cooked with nice flavor. The Alambre is essentially an upscale take on fajitas: the portion was plenty for two people. My main issue was the guacamole. It was served far too cold: almost like it had been slightly frozen: which made it watery. It also lacked salt. I would have preferred for salt to be on the table so I could season it myself. This is a good spot if you want a higher-end Mexican meal and do not mind the higher price point. read more

Decided to check out The Mexican STL for Friday happy hour. The bar/restaurant opens at 3pm and is huge! We opted to sit on the bar side with all the windows for the view, the place is brand new so very clean and nice looking, the staff were attentive and very pleasant, the menu isn't huge but think "elevated" Mexican food. I had the Sangria, not bad but nothing to write home about. Several of the girls had a holiday margarita and said it was wonderful, so will have to give that a go next time! They do take reservations, it filled up very quickly!!! read more
