We LOVE Mexican food and we're always looking for different places to check out. This time it was Diego's Cantina! We had a reservation and were greeted and seated right away. My only complaint from the entire time we were there, was our table. It was tiny. We had to keep moving items to make room. It was also right by the door that leads out to the patio. Fortunately it was a chilly night so there weren't people going in and out. There were other (larger) tables available and were not occupied during the time we were there. Our server was Angela and she was great! She had a fun personality and knew the menu well. Within a minute - maybe two - we had water and chips and salsa on the table. The chips were thin and crispy and not too salty - they were really good. The salsa was okay. It needed some heat. We ordered our cocktails and the Queso Flameado. The restaurant used to be Momo's (a Greek restaurant) and this flaming cheese is a carry over from there. It was yummy. I had the burrito. I chose to have steak in it and have it smothered in queso. It was delicious and had so much meat in it! My husband had the stuffed poblano peppers with chicken. It's served open faced and it's huge! He really enjoyed it and brought a lot of it home. We were full, but we got the baked mini churros for dessert. And yes, they were also really good! When I say this was the most food I had eaten in one sitting for a long time, I'm not kidding. I have conquered the ability to not stuff myself, but I couldn't help it last night. It was so good! We will most definitely be back! read more

This was a cute little gem. Upon entering, it definitely gave bougie Mexican restaurant vibes, especially with all the unique decor that they had. That was really a highlight of the night. Parking was not a disaster as it is like most places in Clayton or maybe because I just got a real good time slot, but I was able to park right in the front so that was great. We got seated fairly quickly, we did make reservations online ahead of time so that may have helped. The ambience of the place was giving like Date Night or girls night something to that effect. They offer booth and regular seating and they also have outdoor seating with a full bar as well. The service was great from their hostess to the server and everyone in between. Now let's get into the food, which was really good. We enjoyed all the food, but the loaded bean dip and the impossible meat taco was a highlight. We are not vegetarian, but wanted to try it and it turned out to actually be our favorite taco. It was the one that had the most seasoning on it. The other tacos were good, but they could use just a little bit more flavor, but other than that everything was fresh cooked to order and we will be visiting them again! read more

I went to Diego's by myself a couple of months ago after I went shoe shopping at Big River, which is on the same block. Diego's is in the old Momo's space. I went a little crazy and had chips and salsa, a margarita with hibiscus, a grilled banana and strawberries with caramel ala mode, plus loaded Mexican street fries. Everything was great and now that I've written the review, I'm ready to return! read more

Diego's Cantina y Cocina lit our queso on fire, and I've never felt more seen. This was stop #1 on our Tour de Tacos--a highly scientific, once-a-month mission to try all the best Mexican spots in STL--and Diego's kicked things off with serious flavor and just the right amount of chaos. We sat inside where the margaritas were flowing and the A/C was doing the Lord's work. Service was fast, friendly, and fun. The moment of the night? The queso flameado arriving tableside... in flames. You already know we shouted "Opa!" in honor of the Greek spot that used to be in that space (shoutout to Momos). Here's the rundown: - Queso flameado: Hot, smoky, melty, and dramatic. Basically me in appetizer form. - Loaded bean dip: So good it needs a warning label. - Costra de pollo: Bold, crispy, packed with flavor. - Tres leches: Sweet, soft, and swimming in syrupy bliss. - Hibiscus margaritas: Light, floral, and way too easy to drink. Everyone at our table was raving--loudly. There were happy noises. There were empty plates. There were no regrets. Whether you're planning a girls' night, date night, or just want to watch your cheese go up in flames in the best possible way--go to Diego's. And if you like strong food opinions, stronger cocktails, and a little sass with your salsa? Follow me. This taco tour is just getting warmed up. #TheSassySaint #FlamingAndFabulous read more

We tried out Diego's and had a really nice experience overall! The service was great. Our server was super friendly and attentive. We missed the happy hour cut-off by just a few minutes, but they still honored the pricing, which we really appreciated! The ambiance of the restaurant is bright & full of greenery which I really enjoyed. The food and drinks were solid. The pozole soup was flavorful, came out hot, and the portion size was generous. Spicy margaritas were super refreshing and had a great kick. The chips were clearly freshly made, and the salsa had the perfect amount of spice--not too mild, not too overwhelming. Once the bill came, the charges felt a little steep. For a small pozole, half-priced happy hour nachos, two spicy margs, and two Topo Chicos, we ended up at $65 after tip. For the amount of food and drink, it was definitely on the pricey side. Still, if you're looking for good vibes, great service, and solid margaritas, Diego's is worth checking out (just know you might be spending a bit more than expected.) read more

Diego's Cantina - The coolest decor - Cocktail Bars Near Me - St. Louis, Missouri

We booked a reservation for 5 for dinner on Monday, July 6. The place looks very cool and has a great location. Upon arriving, we were promptly seated, but then had to wait 15-20 minutes for anyone to come to take a drink order. Once we were able to order, the food came promptly, but was overall unimpressive. The black beans were dried out and hollow with almost no taste, and while some meals were fine, the majority of meals ordered were pretty bland. The waiter returned our bill but had dropped our credit card on the floor and we had to go to the bar to look for it. Not the best experience. read more

We hadn't been to this space since it was Momo's many moons ago, though we have been to Frida's, which is right next door. It was busy this Friday night and only got more lively w many college kids celebrating the end of their school year. On the recommendation of our waitress, we got the flaming queso. It was fun, but not as spectacular as I would have liked but there ARE lots of flammable things hanging from the ceiling... My daughter got the pozole, the enfrijoladas, and a grilled fish taco. I got a grilled fish taco and a Costra de Camarón taco. It was all very tasty! The service from our waitress was fast and she mentioned that she managed to put in our order before two big tables ordered -- so very smart of her! We'll return to try more. read more

Get the Mexican Street Fries! They are super good! Fresh cut fries were cooked with a bit of crispy and held up well under the queso. Rich and creamy, I wished the size was just a bit larger. After going to Frieda's ealeier this year it was time to checkout the sister restaurant next door. We opted to sit out on their decent sized patio on this lovely evening. Plenty of big umbrellas to block sun if you do sit out. Plenty of seating inside as well with festive decor! Warm chips and very fresh salsa was served while we looked at the menu. They do offer seafood and Vegan options. Don't knock the vegan tacos! Quite a simple menu unlike other Mexican places which was nice and not over whelming. Great margaritas and cocktail options. Mocktails offered too. Waited on right away and food was prepared and served very quickly! Good taste, flavor and temps to food. My only knock to this place was after our first round we were asked if we wanted another drink. We both said yes thinking menus would be brought To us but instead another round of what we ordered was brought out without asking if we wanted something different (which we did want to try something else). Great little corner restaurant in a quiet neighborhood. Defiantly will feed your Mexican craving. read more

Im not from St. Louis but have had the hardest time finding really great Mexican food here (like at a sit down restaurant)! I was hoping Diego's would be better than it was unfortunately. The restaurant decor is very cute- they do also have a small outdoor patio. We opted for the patio for dinner since it was nice, but there were so many bugs- flies and mosquitos. Let's start with the few things I did enjoy- their drinks and queso! We got the Purist- which is a margarita, but was strong and flavored very well! We also ordered the Queso Flameado- which they light on fire at your table. It was flavorful and had a strong pepper taste but wasn't that spicy! Both these items I do recommend! Also our server was nice and attentive. Everything else fell a bit short- to start this really isn't traditional mexican- its healthy mexican with many vegan and vegetarian options. They don't serve beef or pork. You can get seafood and chicken. That is totally fine- I just think many things weren't seasoned very well. To start the chips and salsa were just okay. The chips werent salted at all and the salsa was kind of bland and a boring flavor. I got the quesadillas for my entree and opted just for veggies inside. I assumed they would like cook or saute the veggies inside- nope. They put avocado, raw red onion and whole slices of tomato. I would have just preferred some sauteed veggies inside (like yellow onion and peppers etc). The others at my table got Deviled Shrimp and Enchiladas Verdes. The Deviled Shrimp I was told was super spicy- more so than they thought that they couldnt eat it all. The Chicken Enchiladas were pretty good but nothing really special. I would not go out of my way to come back here. Overall experience is 3/5. read more

Not only is the food BEYOND mid and overpriced, they have horrible customer service. We had a 5:30 reservation for my friend's birthday, which the restaurant was fully aware of when we booked. At no point were we informed of any time limit -- and even if there had been one, a reasonable limit would be two hours. Instead, our waitress was openly rude and started rushing us off the table after just about an hour and forty-five minutes. We hadn't even had a chance to cut the birthday cake or sing before being told we had to leave due to "the party booked for your table is yelling at me". It completely ruined what should have been a special, relaxing evening. The lack of proper communication, poor customer service, and the staff's attitude were unacceptable. Mind you our waitress was the manager. If the restaurant can't manage its reservations properly, that's not the customers' responsibility. We came to celebrate, not to feel pressured and unwelcome. Definitely won't be back -- and I'd recommend others think twice before booking here for a special event if you expect to be treated with basic courtesy. read more

I went to Diego's for the first time, last weekend. I can't wait to go back. It is a beautiful restaurant. The staff was amazing, the food was delicious, and the adult beverages were delightful. There was a gentleman named Jeff working the bar. He provided A1 customer service and was very helpful. I really appreciated his hospitality. Brice was our server and he was amazing as well. We had a party of 14, which can be challenging. Even still, Brice was very kind, extremely patient and so helpful. I recommend the Frozen Prickly Pear Margarita and the shrimp fajita bowl. Table was ready when we arrived despite a packed house on a Saturday. Service was great. Appetizers/small plates for 2 (they also have 4) were huge. Appetizers were kind of spicy so when the smothered chicken burritos arrived bland, we were pretty surprised. It might be because they're adept with shredded chicken -- there's no choice other than a tofu faux beef -- but it was like the chicken came from a can. Fortunately we were stuffed and could fix it at home. The Tres Leches dessert was insane! If you go to Diego's and don't order it, you're an imbecile. We might go back just for this dessert. Really. It was that good. The house margarita was average -- also bland -- and the frozen piña colada was light on the taste as well. Service was fabulous though. Very knowledgeable and attentive staff. Menu needs work. read more

We ate here last week to celebrate my birthday. It was our first time, but won't be our last. The margarita was not the best margarita I've ever had, but it was enjoyable and there was a nice selection of beers and cocktails. The salsa was a little disappointing, but that just kept us from overindulging so we still had our appetites. We had the flaming queso as an appetizer and cleaned the bowl, it was so delicious. My daughter and I had the smothered chicken burrito while her boyfriend and my husband had enchiladas Verde. All the food was fresh and delicious. Our server Cecilia was very attentive and helpful with all of our questions. Unfortunately, it was cold so the patio out front was closed but the vibe inside was very cool. I wish I could say I left this place with the same enthusiasm as I arrived, but I'd be lying. The chips were stale and looked like they came from a store. The salsa was bland, and the fries were just okay. The margarita was also a waste of money. I came here for happy hour, but the bartender couldn't even tell me what their happy hour deal was. She was a very nice lady, but her sad mood ruined my vibe. I don't think I'll be returning. Thanks. read more

We love Diego's! Such a fun atmosphere and the food is delicious. Brian is the best server!! We'll be back!

I'm super curious about who's loving the food here. Like, I'm not even being cheeky; I want to know! Diego's Cantina is owned by the wife and husband who own Frida's and Station No.3. I was never a big fan of Frida's food, but Station No.3 wooed me, so I wasn't sure what to expect from Diego's, but I was hopeful. Ambiance: 8/10 The restaurant is beautiful. Evening service is dim, so it could be great for date night or those allergic to bright lights. There's a small patio if you like outdoor dining. Food: 3/10 Vegan Loaded Nachos were fine in taste but lacking in the "loaded" category. For over $15 you get a ton of tortilla chips (some overcooked), topped with refried pinto beans, a little corn, a little jalapeño crema, cilantro, and lots of white onions and shredded radish. It's supposed to come with jalapeños too, but they forgot them. (I asked for them and just took them to go with the leftovers) I've never liked cheese, so it didn't really bother me that there wasn't a vegan cheese; I would've omitted it anyway. But I can hear vegans complaining about this; most people love their cheese. If you want to add black beans or vegan steak seitan, it's gonna cost you a few dollars more for each. Small guacamole. The taste was fine, but for $5 I'd like more than a nano-scoop. Vegan Street Corn - just burnt corn. My friend and God-sister are both meat eaters and got fish tacos. Each complained about the lack of flavor and seasoning. One was even so brazen as to ask our waitress who was cooking the food. That was too much, but the answer didn't surprise us. The waitress admitted that Diego's serves "healthy Mexican." So if your palette is on the bland, no flavor, no spice spectrum, this is your place. For me, Imma need them to have several seats, preferably in front of a spice cabinet. We ran into some friends whilst leaving who proclaimed, "We come for the drinks. The food sucks." And that folks, about sums it up. read more

Full disclosure--I went to Diego's during lockdown, ate outside, and wrote it off. I was wrong!!! We went back during happy hour last week and it will definitely be added into my normal rotation. Diego's offers great HH specials each night of the week. We visited on Thursday and the special was the Purist Margarita, bean dip, and tacos. The Purist Margarita is one of the best margaritas I have ever had. It was simple, flavorful--absolute perfection. We also tried the bean dip which had 1000x more flavor than I would have ever expected. For my entree, I chose the chicken enchiladas and did a side of rice and beans. I enjoyed every bite! Our server was attentive and helpful! She made the visit wonderful. read more

Diego's unfortunately fell pretty short of my expectations. We each ordered just about the cheapest options on the menu, and it was still around $40+ each for dinner. This is definitely an UPSCALE spot, but I just didn't think the food quality and quantity was any better than a typical Mexican restaurant. Our server seemed tired and stretched between multiple tables so it was hard to get ahold of her. They also charge you for a refill of chips which felt a bit criminal. The only redeeming factor for me was the ambiance was a unique theme and very nice decor concept. However, I'm mostly here for the food, so I won't be returning to Diego's anytime soon. read more

I've been here three times in my life. I think I try out every year thinking it can't possibly be this consistently bad... Flavorless. Dry. I had the stuffed Chile poblano. The only flavor was cumin in the beans. Cumin isn't even a spice that we use in Mexico that much. The salsa was flavorless. Previously I've ordered the dry, enfrijoladas and the bad queso flameado, and the "costras" that are only costras in name. Not sure what is going on here but it's not Mexican food. Apparently the drinks are good and it's a cute restaurant in a great location. The potential is great, which is why I keep trying it. read more

The vibes here were so calming and romantic. This is a great place for a date night or a girls night. The dim lighting with the greenery everywhere made it such a vibe. Even the bathrooms were decorated in such a cute manner. The food here was pretty good, I had the quesadilla. It was amazing! The margaritas here were perfect! I made a reservation and was surprised to get a text beforehand letting me know our table was ready. When we arrived, we were promptly seated on the patio. Our waiter was quick to come over and give us menus, water, and salsa & chips. The chips were warm and good, but the salsa was just ok - a bit bland and zero spice. We ordered some drinks - the paloma, a margarita, and the smokin' hot. We were asked if we wanted floaters for the paloma and the margarita. Then our waiter told us about some of their popular apps and we decided to get the queso flameado. Lighting the queso on fire was a bit of a let down because we were outside and there was a fan right by us, but the guy who delivered it to the table made it comical. The queso was delicious and did not disappoint! For meals I got the enfrijoladas and the others got the chicken burrito. For the chicken burrito they were asked if they wanted cheese on the side or smothered on top (not sure if it came with the meal or not), but they both got it on the side. The enfrijoladas were delicious and the ingredients tasted very fresh. The chicken burrito looked good. Throughout everything our waiter was personable and making a lot of jokes. I started to wonder if it was a requirement of the job. When we finished with our meals we said we wanted to get more drinks, but I thought we were going to let the waiter know which ones we wanted - instead he just brought each of us the drinks we already ordered. The waiter had cleared the chips & salsa, but brought us new chips & salsa (on the house) to go with our drinks. All in all I thought it was a pretty good experience. Like some of the other comments here, it felt like there was a good amount of upcharging on already pricey meals. But the quality of the ingredients was great. read more

Ambiance- 10/10 it's beautiful inside Service-6/10 honestly I think the server wasn't happy we didn't order drinks and just drank water. It almost felt dismissive and we had to beg for refills of our drinks. Food-4/10 it's just meh. It's grossly overpriced for everything you get. Is it edible? Yes. But almost $7.00 for one street taco- craziness. My burrito was large which felt better matched to the $14 price tag. Did I mention absolutely zero sides come with these prices? Everything n is a La carte so your dinner can get super pricey real fast. The salsa was absolutely disgusting. Would I come back? This was a place I've been eyeing for a minute and was given a surprise birthday treat by my gf for dinner here. I liked the ambiance with the artwork, music and the greenery they used. Our waiter was very helpful and friendly. He even suggested to wait a bit for happy hour (our reservation was 7:30 and happy hour started at 8). And was very clear and detailed about the menu options. We got queso blanco, guac, corn, a few tacos, a couple of 'My Wife's Margarita's and a sangria. Major points on presentation of food. The queso blanco wasn't as hot as expected but tasty. And the tacos were okay. I like the shrimp taco the best.
