    Birthday dinner by Serevan's fireplacde
    Kathleen H.

Armenia indeed, in Amenia. Converted farmhouse with serious mortise and tenon beams and original layouts. On the mantelpiece, black and white photos of the diaspora preside over feasts from the Near East. Papa with violin silently serenaded us from an oval frame. For my birthday we stayed close to fire, and received lavish attention from server and chef. Seryozha expresses himself with every dish, balancing flavors and delicately showering spices. He even created a special lamb tidbit appetizer, languidly poised on a bed of hummus, cubed vegetables and eggplant with pomegranate molasses (we fervently desire him to name this "The Poet's Lamb"). Olives wink in a pool of virgin press. Nestled in labne, honest lamb chops come with ribs that pirouette above shyly pink ovals. Basmati flecked with dill shows off her apricot polka dots, while black sour cherries signal our destiny. Truly, a memorable hand-crafted feast.

In life, things change. People come and go. Times are different. Outlooks and perspectives are seen from new and unanticipated angles. But feelings always remain. I took my son to dinner last night prior to his departure back to college. The smiles, the warmth, the connection, the feeling of "home" exceeded my expectations after being nervous about being away so long. Were there new faces? Yes. Did I miss some of my friends who are either no longer there, off that night, or attending to other family business? Deeply. The menu is still the standard in the area for a nicer lunch or night out. You can go as accessible as a burger, enjoy a well constructed special, or enjoy really good sushi in Northwestern CT. Everything you may be looking for to meet even the most persnickety pallet or dietary need. Come in jeans. Come in a suit. All the same once inside. Do recipes change? Yes. Does my mind have a tendency to long for the old? Sure does. But The Boathouse, and the people who make it special will always keep me coming back - It feels like "home".

The calamari came with ranch, and tasted rubbery and the baby back ribs were ok, a little dry. The lighting was poor and i saw many couples using flashlights to read the menu. Our server seemed nice, but he never refilled our drinks and rarely talked. Just when i thought the reaturaunt couldn't get any worse i walk into the bathroom with my 7 year old brother to find a naked woman hanging on the wall. Overall a 2/10 experience, would not go again.

Update: We went back almost immediately because we couldn't stop talking about the first meal, and…read moresomehow it was every bit as amazing. The lamb shank was absurdly tender, the baba ganoush was smoky and rich, and yes, the ezme, beets, and pita remain mandatory ordering. But what really sets this place apart is the heart behind it. On a hard night for our family, a simple unexpected dessert brought genuine comfort and a smile when we needed it most. They don't just feed your stomach here. They feed your soul. I would go to war for this restaurant. An absolute gem, genuinely some of the best food I've had in the area!! I don't write glowing reviews lightly, but this place absolutely earned one. From the moment the food hit the table, it was obvious this was something special. Every single thing we ordered, from the mezze sampler to the drinks to dessert, felt like the best version of itself it could possibly be. Not one weak note. Even the pita bread was memorable. Warm, soft, fresh, lightly charred, and worthy of praise in a meal FULL of standout dishes. The mezze sampler was EXTRAORDINARY. The beet and goat cheese was one of those bites that makes you stop mid-conversation. The goat cheese was fresh, creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced by roasted beets that were unbelievably sweet and luscious. Honestly, they were almost candy-like. I don't know what they did to prepare them, but they were incredible. The spicy vegetable dip, Esme, was bright, vibrant, and bursting with flavor. Fresh, zippy, and balanced with just enough heat. The eggplant dip was equally impressive, with a silky texture, subtle tartness, mellow tomato notes, and that gentle pleasant bitterness that makes eggplant so satisfying when it's done well. The hummus was ridiculously creamy and rich with tahini, giving it a deep nutty flavor that made it one of the best hummus dishes I've personally had. We also ordered the Turkish manti, and they were fantastic. Little handmade parcels topped with cool yogurt and warm spiced oil that brought everything together beautifully. We didn't even manage to take a picture because by that point we were so completely absorbed in the meal that all manners disappeared and we just devoured them immediately. No photo. No pause. Just instinct. That might be the strongest endorsement I can give. The mint lemonade was perfect for a warm day. Bright, refreshing, tart, cooling, and mint-forward without being overly sweet. It tasted clean, balanced, and incredibly refreshing. Dessert completely sealed the deal. The Turkish revani was unbelievably soft, soaked through with milk, and had that luscious almost tres leches quality that makes every bite melt away. The fresh berries and raspberry sauce gave it just enough brightness and acidity to balance the sweetness beautifully. I had a cup of black tea with it, and the combination of cake, berries, and tea was one of those simple little moments that feels kind of magical. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Tasteful decor, warm atmosphere, and thoughtful design that feels welcoming without trying too hard. The service was friendly, attentive, and genuine. More than anything, the whole place feels like a labor of love. What blows my mind most is that this restaurant has apparently been here for over two years, and we somehow only just discovered it. We were legitimately mad at ourselves thinking about how many meals we could have had here already. Now we're just trying to make up for lost time!! For roughly $80 for two before tip, the value was outstanding. At first glance, the menu might look a little upscale, but once the food arrives, it makes perfect sense. The quality more than justifies the price. I've had good Mediterranean food before. This is operating on a completely different level. Without question, this is some of the best Mediterranean food I've had anywhere in the area, and I can't wait to go back.

We went for dinner at 6 pm on a Saturday, we thought we were the only ones there, again because of the empty parking lot. There were a few people already seated. We didn't have any reservations, and I thought - Why would we? We started with the appetizers, babaganoush and calamari. Both were good. My wife and I had the mixed platter for two. All the meats were tasty, seasoned well and weren't dry. For dessert, I tried the affogato, espresso over ice cream and that hit the spot. Overall, we were impressed. People did start coming in after 6 so it's best to reserve a table especially if you have more than 4 in your party. The don't serve liquor so it's BYOB!! For some, that might be the important thing to note .

We continued inside and found the bar area. We saw that there was a group at a table. So, we continued inside and sat down. The staff is very nice, but very slow. The menu is very interesting. We ordered the spicy sausage with fig appetizer (This was the star of the show! we got another order!) 2 orders of butternut squash soup and grilled octopus for apps to share. We also requested more bread and were served fresh baked rolls that were so good! We ordered the pistachio crusted pork chop and shrimp risotto for entrees. The 2 people that ordered butternut squash soup were a split decision on it. One loved it the other hated it. I tried it. I thought it tasted really good but i don't think i could eat a whole bowl of it. It was too sweet. The Octopus was excellent! The Spicy sausage with fig was amazing. This is a definite thing to order. The pistachio crusted pork chop was very good. I didn't love the risotto. If i'm ever in the area and have a lot of time to sit and eat, I would definitely come back.

The rooms are each unique and comfortable and the toiletries fantastic! The restaurant is not to be missed either--food is excellent, portions good especially for the price, and the service friendly and accomodating. It's cozy without being too dated or chintzy, a tricky balance for many inns. Every room has a fridge, which may not show up in the room descriptions online. Above all, it's the rare hotel where you really feel like the stay was a great value for your money. My only suggestions would be brighter lighting in the rooms, more varied coffees with breakfast (hard to suggest when Irving Farm is steps away, though!), and maybe extra blankets in each room during the colder months. Above all, it's a great place for people of all ages and needs to stay and enjoy the region!

Place your order at the counter, then have a seat at one of the handful of tables in the dining area adjacent to the open kitchen while your food is prepared to order. The menu is very simple with your choice of freshly made-to-order falafel, hummus, or roasted vegetables (as well as various iterations of those three options) served either as a sandwich in a pita or as a platter. On our recent visit for a late lunch, I opted for the falafel pita sandwich ($12), a generous portion of freshly made falafel served with tahini, and cucumber, tomato, cabbage, and onion with sumac, which was excellent! My dining companion went with the hummus pita sandwich ($11), a generous serving of freshly made hummus as well as cucumber, tomato, cabbage, and onion with sumac, which she really enjoyed a lot. Bonus points for the hot sauce (with freshly-made mild, medium, and hot selections) and pickle bar available to patrons no matter whether they grab one of the handful of small tables to enjoy their meal in-house or take their orders to enjoy elsewhere. Portions are generous and the freshness of the ingredients was obvious. Both of us really enjoyed our meals and we'll definitely be back next time we're in the area. PRO TIP #1: Aba's doesn't have a private parking lot, but there is plenty of on-street parking on East Market Street. If you can't find a spot on the street, the Rhinebeck Municipal Parking lot (@ 61 East Market Street) is just across the street from Aba's.
