Food was excellent - hummus was especially delicious and I'm not usually a fan! Falafel was great - flavorful and warm. The "tzatziki" was watery - and although the flavor was pretty good, the texture was not that of actual tzatziki. Service was also an issue - we had to get up ourselves to ask for things, and to get the check. Apparently, someone was out that day, and they were short staffed. My friends have been raving about this place so I finally rolled up when I had the chance. I got the falafel platter with tzatziki instead of tahini. The falafel was good; the carrot and beet salads were delicious. The hot sauce on each table wasn't hot enough and the iceberg lettuce brought the whole plate down. It was nice to get a jug of ice water on the table and the service was kind and friendly. read more

I've had mostly soups, salads, & breads, plus a smoothie. While the portions aren't American-gigantic, the food is delicious, the owner gracious & seems genuinely interested in his customers. Next time I'll ask why an Uzbek restaurant started adding Korean & Indian items on the menu. read more

Mixed experiences. I had great experiences previously with delivery of lamb kabob and chicken. But a disappointing experience today ordering in person for the first time. My dad and brother love this place and reminded me to go here out when I said wanted a healthy lunch with protein. Remembering the amazing kebab in pita this seemed like a great idea. I was poring over the menu trying to find lamb kebab and nobody was behind me but I felt rushed to order. When she pressed me to tell her what I was looking for I said I was looking for lamb in grilled chunks not shavings and was pointed to the lamb pita or shawarma. I said again I was looking for lamb as grilled chunks not shaved meat. She said yes it comes in chunks. Nope. What came out was actually a gyro with shaved meat. I decided I could sit and enjoy it anyway. it looked appealing in its sesame bun with white sauce. Unfortunately more than half of this gyro meat was gristle and fat. Not exaggerating. I sat akwardly trying to chew around these hard lumps. After spitting out several bites as discreetly as possible I asked to take it home. When I got home I opened it to salvage the edible meat, but there was very little. The photo I took of the pile of gristle is too gross to post on Yelp and I don't want to hurt their business, but I want to caution against the lamb gyro. They have better options. Probably stick to the chicken for shaved meat sandwiches and only get the lamb as kebabs. I will try again with other dishes and hope to fare better. My kid does enjoy the chicken and fries from here. I will stick to delivery to ensure I can make unhurried decisions. read more

I've never tried Uzbek food, but when I heard of a new restaurant in Highland it was top of my list to check out. Alons Halal Grill with Halal in the name, I was expecting something like lamb over rice with a Mediterranean influence, but it was surprisingly different. Owners Sobir and Nayoba were more than happy to explain the menu and what everything was. Nayoba ran her own food truck before taking a job as a chef at Mohonk Mountain House. I went with their recommendations and got the mixed kabob platter (lamb,beef,chicken), an order of manti (Uzbek dumplings), naan bread (different than Indian naan) with hummus, lentil soup, and a carrot salad. The hot naan bread was pillowy and awesome dipped into the homemade hummus with olive oil on top. The carrot salad was surprisingly delicious and sweet while the lentil soup was earthy. The dumplings were big and filled with meat. Much like a large Chinese dumpling had a baby with a pierogi. Four of these are big enough for an entree alone. Then came the star of the show. Three different Kabob skewers with rice and squash over lavish flatbread. The lamb is ground with spices, kind of like a meatball consistency, and the flat bread underneath catches the juices from the meats. Steak was tender, and chicken was nicely seasoned. It was definitely a cool cultural experience, and i look forward to coming back and trying a gyro, which they make on the naan bread, not on a pita like we are used to in the states. I wish them tons of luck and love they are trying to educate us on their countries culture and traditional foods. I was warmly greeted by the proprietor himself, who graciously gave me a moment to review the full menu after I asked, "What's the go-to dish here?" Like most first-timers, I leaned toward a standard selection--something familiar and safe. But without a hint of arrogance, he suggested I try the lamb shank with their special bread and chickpea broth. I trusted his recommendation... and I'm glad I did. The dish wasn't just good--it was divine. Tender, flavorful, comforting, and clearly prepared with care and tradition. It completely outclassed the option I had originally considered. I'll be going back soon, not just to confirm that this wasn't a one-hit wonder, but because I suspect it's the beginning of a multi-hit phenomenon. We were so happy to have another restaurant in Highland. I ordered take out. The owners are lovely people. The chicken soup with dumplings was delicious because the broth was rich and homemade and I've never had dumplings like that before. We ordered the lamb with rice. The flavors were spot on but the lamb portion was tiny. I estimate that it was only an ounce for over $18.00. It's pricey for what you get. read more

I don't normally write reviews on yelp but I was compelled to. This place is an incredible hidden gem. Excellent food, good value for money, clean, family run, counter service style restaurant. If you're scared because you've never tried uzbek food don't be. It's very warm and flavorful without being intense. Imagine food cooked by a Grandmother you didn't know you had who also when to culinary school. Even the classics are much better than what's in your head, the gyro is leagues ahead of what you'd get at a greek diner and the chicken/lamb over rice far exceeds anything you'd get in a stand or truck. Our first Uzbek restaurant. Opened recently in Highland NY. We live in South Carolina but back visiting friends and neighbors. Happened to notice Alons Halal Grill now open in Hannaford Plaza. Wife and I stopped in for lunch today. Seems still not too busy but based on the food quality I believe they will fill up soon. Not ever having Uzbek dishes before we were not sure what to expect. Everything was seasoned very nicely. Unique flavors. The young lady serving us was very pleasant and helpful. I failed to ask if she was the owner. I would recommend you try this place at least once. Otherwise you won't know what you're missing.. We hope to get back here before we leave next week. read more

I like halal food in general so I was pleasantly surprised at finding an Uzbek restaurant nearby, which I've never tried before. They had awesome & tasty dishes that have a home-cooked, authentic feel. I had mastava and chebureki, and my wife had borsch and squash steamed dumplings. They were all absolutely delicious! I'm so glad to have discovered this new restaurant, which serves delicious Uzbeki food. (Try it if you've never had it.) The owners are very friendly and accommodating. They figured out something for my picky daughter to eat. The restaurant is clean (not fancy) for dining on site. I got takeout and it traveled well. I am at a loss for words. This might be one of the best restaurants I've ever been to, like I'm not even lying right now. I am such a picky eater, and I'm really judgy with restaurants. This place however, was amazing. My mom and I cleared our entire plates, and wished there was more. I got the chicken shish-kabob and the chicken was perfectly cooked, and it came with incredibly yummy sides of cabbage, cucumbers, and rice. I don't even like veggies most times, so I was hesitant to try it at first, but it was so good. Also, the owner was so kind, and the food came out quickly, and the restaurant itself was gorgeous. It had an ambiance video playing with really nice music, and I loved the paintings on the walls. Overall, I loved this restaurant, and there's only one in the Hudson Valley, so you gotta go visit it now. Like, you should be out the door driving there now. :) read more
