After a visit to another brewery in the Crozet area, we visited Selvedge Brewing, as recommended by many along the way. It was a perfect way to end the evening until the torrential rain came down as we were about to leave, and as they were about to close. When a situation understandably could have been met with a "not my issue" attitude, we were instead reassured that there was no rush on their end. Our wonderful and attentive bartender, Tatum, continued to treat us with kindness and great customer service, even while they were doing their job in closing up. I appreciate that that our safety was prioritized and valued over their workday ending. As Annapolitans, we continue to discover the gems of Charlottesville, and this is high on our list. Brewery #453 Selvedge felt a little boujee. When we walked in someone who acted like and resembled Dieter from SNL (Google it young whipper snappers) took our orders. I asked if they had flights and he acted like I asked him for a Busch Light. As if this beer was being pissed out by God himself into my glass. So, I just got a pint of Hummingbird Ale which was a hazy IPA. It was good but came out with a hug head (too much foam) which seemed odd for a hazy IPA with a pretentious server. We also ordered a thing of nacho fries which I think was just cheese sauce, cilantro and banana peppers. These were very delicious. Dieter never came back by, so I didn't get to try any more of their beer. The place seemed nice. Had a cool arcade area. The food and beer I had was good. Just let there be flights so people can try more of your beers and maybe remove the snooty waiter. read more

My husband and I stopped in here late one evening a few weeks ago to see if the kitchen was still open so we could have dinner. We were conflicted because it was a little over an hour until close, but we saw from outside that there were still quite a few tables with people inside, so we decided to go in and ask. The hostess/our server said it was still open and we had about 10-15 minutes to get our order in still and took us to a table. We each decided to get a double Timbercreek Smashburger, and split a crinkle cut fries order with cheese sauce at her recommendation. The smashburgers were so, so, so good and really hit the spot after being out hiking all day. We were only in town for a week and our first day we had walked over to Högwaller from our Airbnb with the dogs to try their beer and smashburgers, so we wanted to try Selvedge's before we left, too. They both are equally as good, but different, and I recommend stopping in at both locations to try them out! The "snack" of crinkle cut fries was also a great choice. Perfect sharing size and they were cooked to perfection. Crispy, but not burnt, well seasoned, and stayed hot while we ate them. Our server checked on us often and was very sweet. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because we felt like the man behind the bar hadn't been very welcoming at first. He was nice when you talked to him, but he was closing all of the taps early and just seemed annoyed that he had to pour more beer. We went to each order 2 beers to try since we had never been there before and are from out of town, but he told us it was Virginia law that he couldn't sell us more than one beer at a time. Every other brewery we went to during our stay (minus Three Notched because we went there for brunch and only ordered one beer at a time) we each ordered 2 beers to try so we wouldn't have to keep getting up and moving around while we had the dogs with us. It seemed very hard to believe that every other brewery was breaking the law for us/other customers during our stay. He continued closing down the taps and never did a last call, so we ended up only having the one beer while we were there. I asked if they sold cans to-go when we were leaving and he said no, but that they hoped to soon and that they sold crowlers. We ended up getting a crowler of the festbier to take home and drink at the Airbnb while watching a movie. We would definitely come back if we are ever in Charlottesville again, though not so close to closing time. We loved our server, the food, and the beer. Selvedge also had the nicest taproom out of all of the breweries we went to, lots of different seating options, big TVs to watch the game on, lots of space in general. read more

Elite lagers, nationally elite lagers. Servers are attentive. There is food, but it's not near the level of the lagers. The space has been allowed to be, even made to be cacophonous, and the business has recently made it louder, far louder, by installing an arcade for children. It can be difficult to have a conversation here (unless you sit outdoors on the excellent new loading dock/patio). My head sometimes hurts after a long visit. The beer is worth a lot of discomfort, but it's not a place to go to have a conversation. read more

I really wanted to like it here more than I did. Walking in, it's super neat looking - lots of space and cool decor. Whoever greeted us was very friendly, and we were pumped for some good food and beer. My husband and I asked to try two beers and our server said absolutely! We ordered our drinks and then two burgers w fries. Not sure what happened between ordering and getting our stuff, but we didn't see our server again for a very long time. Rather, she didn't come back to our table for a very long time. She was chatting with other employees under their staircase. Finally flagged someone else down to ask for more water. She only came back after we were done eating, and by that point we just wanted to leave; her vibe was way off and we felt oddly uncomfortable. We would've ordered another round had she come by earlier, but nope. There were also about ten small children running in and out of the game room, no parents around, and it was kind of annoying. We have kids (they were not with us) and know you shouldn't let them run around without you. We left and went to Starr Hill at Dairy Market where the vibe is always chill and the happy hour specials rule. TLDR; good burgers, okay beer, too loud inside, and an absent server. read more

Beware you will get a "service fee" on your order. Not optional. It's ostensibly so that the business can pay its employees. So it's a mandatory tip. And then they want you to also add an additional tip. The food was typical Sysco's food service food and verging on burnt. Place is a big wharehouse with little ambiance and stressed servers. I went to Selvedge last week and it was fabulous from beginning to end! Casey runs an excellent establishment with great food, great drinks and great service! He took our order and we were also tended to by Andrew, who was kind and attentive, but non-intrusive as we chatted at our table. 2/5 December 2024. Not my favorite stop in the area. We arrived here in the afternoon and they were quite busy so we were expecting good things. I would say this place is a Taproom/restaurant and not a brewery at least from our experience. Only two of 8-10 beers on tap were from them. The vast majority were guest taps. Maybe that's an anomaly but if I wanted a Port City Robust Porter I'd go to Port City and save the travel time. The two beers I did try were OK. The food wasn't to my taste but I think that may have been more of a style thing. I think they were going for more of a healthy food approach that wasn't what I was looking for but it may be more in line for you. If my specific issues don't bother you than you should probably add a point or two to my score. Maybe this was just an outlier and I caught them on a bad day. For me it wasn't a place I'd go back to but it might be better for you. read more

This is a long overdue review - Selvedge Brewing is GREAT! Being into lagers, this brewery never disappoints. I was familiar with the head brewers beers at another Charlottesville brewery, but they are at another level here. My current favorite is the Tabolcloth, a collaboration with a Richmond brewery, that is a Franconian Vollbier. I'm not usually a fan of Vienna Lagers, but the Loden here great - reminiscent of Ottakringer (a Viennese brewery). And to top it off, the staff know how to pour a proper beer. Erin, the bartender, is top notch! When she serves a beer, it's at the fill line (the line on a German beer glass) that not only gives you the amount you're paying for, but also enough foam to make the pour visually appealing. Cheers! Tess, another employee, makes sure the TVs keep you interested. If you're a bowling fan, you can watch PBA and college bowling plus the usual college, NFL, and soccer games. I've even watched rodeo there. It's nice to go somewhere and not be bombarded by news... Food is solid - good smash burgers and specials, particularly the meatball sub. I don't eat a lot of french fries, but I finish them here. So good... So glad they moved to Bellair from the Woolen Mills! read more

This place had good food and beer and the servers were mostly very nice except for the manager working on 11/28/2025 who was the biggest fu*king asshole ever and set the burger on the the side of the table and it tilted straight over on to my family member's lap and all the food spilled all over him which made a huge mess all over his cloth. The manager (who was handing him the food) looked at my family member like he was an idiot and said, "you dropped it, it's your fault." This was completely wrong as the manager dropped the plate. His dumbass then huffed and walked away. My family member went over and followed the manager and asked what the matter was and why he just walked away. The manager still continued to act like a complete asshole and blamed my family member. Our server apologized sincerely. My family member walked away with no food that night. As we were leaving, the manager was staring down my family and they talked to him across the restaurant. He said some terrible things to a woman in my family and she came right back in and called the guy out. He was the worst restaurant employee I have ever encountered and if he should be fired instantly. read more
