Ok the switch from Martens to Virginia BBQ was a great move. I am very picky about my brisket and mine was a little too fatty, but a lot of people are all for that. The most important thing was the amazing flavor and the fact that the brisket and turkey were full of flavor and not overcooked, which seems to be the way most smokehouses in Virginia thinks you should make brisket. This location is no longer Martin's Grill. It's now VA BBQ. Why are Martin's Grill reviews attached to the new restaurant? This is a clean, no-nonsense, down to earth BBQ place and it's delicious! I've been several times since they've opened & haven't been disappointed. I've come in during dinner & almost closing, and the food has been consistently good. The pictured dishes are the platters with 2 meats & 2 sides. I couldn't finish my platter & had the rest for lunch (still delicious cold) a couple days after. The standout for me (besides the meats) were the onion rings! These are NOT the pre-frozen ones. These are fresh-cut, seasoned, & breaded, and they are ADDICTIVE! They make other ones look sad. The baked beans are cooked with brisket pieces. The sandwiches are generous, too. The meats are smoked, tender & delicious. The sauces are also handmade, not bottled. So, you're going to have sample for your preferred flavor & heat. Not a problem because they have little sauce cups that you can use. So when me and my family first walked in, I was a little hesitant. The bathroom floor was super sticky and was giving truck stop vibes. We sat at a table inside and there was food on the floor and even a dead wasp. I was worried. However, one bite of the food and it literally erased the lack of ambiance. Only reviews after May 2025 are legitimate - prior reviews are for Martins Grill not Virginia BBQ We were regulars every week at Martin's Grill for at least 3 years for burgers and fries. We were assured that the burgers would still be available once the change over to Virginia BBQ Co took place (I'm not a BBQ fan). The week the change was complete the first big difference was no table service. You order and pay at the cash register and then go pick it up when your number is called. When paying, the screen asked for a tip prior to receiving what we ordered. We tipped, but there's no table service so why/who are we tipping? The menu included a $9 smash burger (it's a double burger - no single patty option and not quite twice the price as my normal single patty burger). I was charged extra for pickles on my burger - I think fifty cents. Seriously? We were also charge a credit card fee. The burger was very good - but way too big for me to finish. The fries were as good as always however our bill was about $10 higher than what we had been paying for our weekly visit to Martin's Grill. Again, the food was very good but the food was always very good even when we were paying $10 less each week. However there's no longer any service provided. Grab your own food and condiments at the counter and clean up your own table when you're done eating. Again, why are we tipping? Riverside still has table service and equally as good burgers and fries. read more

Now that it's BBQ, the vibe and quality has completely changed. The pulled pork- so bland I couldn't finish it, even with copious amount of subpar sauce. The brisket- so OVERLY seasoned, my husband couldn't eat it. The mac and cheese, so flavorless I questioned if anyone behind the counter had tried it. You cannot call yourself a BBQ joint and have tasteless coleslaw and yet, that's exactly what it was. The "Texas toast" was a cold piece of bread with not a single swipe of butter on it. Now to the cleanliness of the place- my elbows stuck to the bar, and when my husband wiped the counter with his napkin, it came up black. There was an older woman working the prep station, where she was adding ingredients to platters and sandwiches. She stuck her finger in some kind of container, possibly potato salad? not sure, and LICKED HER FINGER and KEPT MAKING FOOD!!!! As someone who has worked in the food industry for over 10 years, I was absolutely horrified to see this. I loved Martins, and would love to continue to support this business but there are obvious improvements to be made. read more

*for their food truck* We just had their food truck food last night and it was really good! We both got just the classic burgers and fries and, although just a simple burger (tomato, pickles, lettuce, bacon, cheese, and meat), it tasted amazing. We had been scarred by a different food truck burger and were hesitant to try another but these redeemed our faith again in food truck burgers. *angels singing*. I have to agree with other reviewers when they said the burgers here are fantastic. Delicious food cannot make up completely for terrible service though. We went for takeout order for lunch and placed and paid for our order and told it would be ready in about 15 minutes. I informed the waitress we'd wait outside. 20 minutes later I went back inside and was asked my name for order and I told the young man who asked I never gave a name. The girl who wrote my order down spotted me and began frantically looking for the order ticket she wrote up. Turns out, she never gave it to the short order cook. Fast forward another 25 to 30 minutes we still waiting. Husband had gone inside to get order and was asked what did we order again? He was fed up and came and told me to handle it so as I walked in, young man was coming out with our order. It was just two burgers and an order of fries! It was not busy as it was after their peak lunch rush. A shame they are a bit inept when it comes to service because the burgers were excellent. Half the reason I go somewhere is not for the food, it's for the people. Their hearts just weren't in it today, but I still tipped well due to the coronavirus situation. I ordered take out for my family and we took it to a park to have for a picnic. The food was amazing, we enjoyed it. Can't say I'll be a returning customer, though, as the vibe was pretty depressing. Thankfully for me, Martin's in a great location. Just north of town in Hollymead. I enjoy sitting at the bar to get a good look at the TVs and watch them cook on the flattop in front of you. It is also good for medium size groups. We have taken as many as 8 for my birthday dinner. Martin's has outdoor seating when the weather is nice. It's a great spot if you want something quick and have your pup with you. I haven't had a bad meal at Martin's, last time I had the Chicken Philly with an order of poutine. I'll admit, I was spoiled by poutine on my trip to Montreal. This poutine had the necessary ingredients, I just felt the gravy was a bit too salty. The chicken philly was great. You can always judge a good philly by their bread. In my opinion it is what sets a philly apart from its competitors. The bread at Martins was grilled perfectly with the right amount of butter on the roll. The cheese was melted nicely with an adequate amount of peppers and onions to accompany the chicken. The price is reasonable which is another reason that I return. Overall, great place with friendly staff and good food. Keep it up! read more

Came here by way of a Carter's Mountain food truck (which was great by the way) and their take out experience was great as well. Their subs and sandwiches options are a literal dream team-Italian, philly, blt, Reuben, po boy, fried/grilled chicken. Customer service is great, my husband said the burger was the best he's had for a while, I love the buffalo chicken sandwich. My only suggestion would be to update the ordering through their website. Quick and fast take out service! It was very easy to place an order and I love how you can customize the burgers to your liking. I got the cheese steak and my husband got a double burger. Cheese steak was on the smaller side but the burger with all the fixings was delicious. I definitely would stick with a burger next time! We also got a side of half and half tater tots and onion rings. The tots were fried perfectly but the onion rings were a little on the overdone side, but personally I like them more crispy. Stopped in by chance on the way back from Blacksburg. Outstanding burgers. I had a lot of toppings on mine - and it was suitably messy. Yum. My wife had just bacon and said it was delicious. But the good service and amazing food, as well as low prices, made up for the lack of wine glasses. I ordered a philly cheese steak and it was so good! The beef was lean and the tomatoes and lettuce were very fresh! The bread bun was also crispy on the outside but warm and chewy on the inside. A very delicious dish that's not too greasy or heavy! My boyfriend got the quad burger, a massive burger with four patties! The meat again was high quality, lean, and well grilled! Martin's serves fantastic food without over greasing or drowning everything in sauce. Servers were friendly and service was fast! Parking was easy as there are so many parking spaces. This place was pretty busy on a Friday night but there were lots of seats and tables so don't worry about not getting a seat! Finally prices are unbeatable! Small hamburgers are around $4 or so. My delicious Philly cheese steak was slight under $7. Drinks were also super cheap! $4.25 for most 12oz bottled beers and wines. Definitely recommend this place! read more

The burger meat is fresh and tasty, and they also have various other sandwiches and a bunch of sides, including fries, tots, fried cheese, fried mushrooms, etc. There's a decent amount of tables and bar seating. Came in this evening for Father's Day & had a terrible experience. My Husband ordered bbq & they didn't have any, my son wanted a fruit cup which you also didn't have. My Mom had to walk next door to the 7-11 to get one. My Husband needed more time to decide on something else but the waitress never came back. My Mom had to go up to the bar to place his order.
