BBQ sundae to go

Solid cville BBQ. Tried the bbq sundae both as is and with the coleslaw on the side- definitely how I will be ordering it from now on. So much food. I also love the homemade chips!

Collard Greens - contains meat

This spot is GREAT for a quick and easy, down-home, comfort food! I was pleasantly surprised not only by the quality and authenticity of this southern spot but also the quickness and efficiency! The portions are a pretty decent size (not too small or too large). I ordered the collard greens which were prepared with pork, as well as the hand breaded tenders! The tenders were seasoned perfectly and were also joint, moist, and tender! I requested ranch dipping as my sauce and even the ranch tasted authentic and delicious! I look forward to ordering from here again soon and hopefully as a dine-in experience!

This was my 3rd stop in my September Fried Chicken Crawl 2k20! 9.6.2020 l #eatlocalcville l September Chicken Crawl 2k20 - Be sure to check out my chicken crawl announcement post to see more information on the criteria I'm using! 3rd stop: Red Hub. Anyone who lives near the Corner/Wertland area has most likely heard of Red Hub. Located on 10th St, next to the Wertland St traffic light, it's pretty easy to find and pretty easy to walk to. I went with friends with each person getting a tray. Most got the fried chicken tray with one getting the wing platter. The chicken trays come with bbq sauce, 2 hush puppies, housemade chips, and a side. Mac'n'cheese was the choice of many, while someone got succotash! Crunch - Crunch, crunch, crunch was the sound resonating from our table as everyone started digging in. The breading wasn't too thick! Flavor- Flavor was amazing! Definitely unique in flavor and well seasoned! Not too salty. I think they used the same flavoring on the chips. Succulence - Well cooked, definitely juicy~ Heartburn - Was able to eat without issues! Ended up eating majority of the chicken in one sitting haha Tasted okay cold. The breading was no longer crunchy, but the flavor was still good. Nothing too spectacular as a cold dish, so def recommend finishing the chicken when you get a tray! Sides - Who doesn't love hush puppies? Such a pleasant surprise when I saw them in the tray. My only qualm was why not add more~~ In terms of the chips, it was good, but the added seasoning was definitely a lot since it was relatively packed on... Wouldn't be opposed if there was an option to substitute the chips with their hush puppies! Their mac'n'cheese was good! They used thicker cavatappi noodles, as opposed to stereotypical macaroni. This was a welcomed change, as the cheese collected in the crevices, creating a pleasant surprise in each bite. The succotash was definitely the most unique option on their menu, at least for me. First time trying it, but it's vegetables cooked in butter - what's not to appreciate!

Brisket and pulled chicken combo plate. Baked beans, chips and hush puppies

I made my way here with the anticipation that only a BBQ loving southerner could. I'm in town for work and immediately sought out the best bbq spots and found this one near my hotel. Despite mixed reviews I opted to test it myself and form my own opinion. 1. SERVICE: was rather slow due to waiting almost 5 minutes for the lady to come from the far rear of the building, possibly outside, and reach the counter to take my order. 2. ATMOSPHERE: the decor reminds of a small pack house or smoke house used in the south. Nice. The dining area is small and quaint but sufficient due to there also being outside seating. I noticed that the utensils placed in the baskets that were hung next to my table were very dusty. No problem though, I helped myself to a fresh set at the counter. 3. FOOD: I ordered the brisket and pulled chicken combo plate, with baked beans, complimentary cole slaw, hush puppies and seasoned chips. Brisket was rather dry and rubbery. So was my pulled chicken. Due to the fact that I arrived a noon, I suspect I received warmed leftovers from the previous day. No way could you have dried out both your brisket and chicken this early. The chicken was also flavorless and needed much sauce to revive it. The sauces were spicy the way I like, but the flavor profile just didn't round out. I purposely got a cup of each sauce to try and opted for the Lexington duce for my chicken. The others were either too peppery or just not good. The chips were the best thing on the plate. The baked beans were decent and the hush puppies were severely overcooked. All in all, I gave this place an honest try. They have the potential, but just didn't deliver a great experience. And for $17, I definitely didn't get my money's worth. On to the next spot.

Pulled Pork and Pulled Chicken platter

In Charlottesville and looking for a good lunch spot, not too expensive and preferably someplace we had not been. This place popped up and we are glad it did!! Nothing fancy here, but very comfortable. Typical menu for a BBQ type restaurant. We got Pulled Pork Platter and Pulled Chicken platter with hush puppies and Mac cheese as our sides. They had several sauces to choose from, but not that their meat needed any! It was absolutely delicious. The Mac-n-cheese was incredible, so soft and cheesy. Hush puppies were fried to perfection. Pricing was incredibly reasonable (inexpensive). Service was friendly. Very small dining room with limited parking. We went about 2pm, so not busy. Enjoy!

Serving of pulled chicken, no sauce

One and done. We tried Red Hub on a Sunday. The brisket was gray, watery and flavorless. As though it was reheated in a hot pot of meat juice. It was nothing like what some of the pictures show in the other reviews. The pulled chicken was dried out and needed a ton of sauce. The cheese grits were cold. The hush puppies were also cold. The only items that were of any goodness were the pickles and the rustic chips. A dead giveaway that this place is a dud, was there was no aroma of a smoker. Most bbq joints have that wonderful aroma of smoked meats. This place had no such scent.

Pulled Pork Platter ($10), served with hush puppies, chips and a side of mac & cheese

Solid BBQ for the area, Red Hub Food Co. is a solid lunch spot in Charlottesville serving all of your favorites at competitive prices. I'm actually relieved I don't live/work anywhere near Charlottesville (it's a long commute from Philadelphia) just so I don't gain a hundred pounds going to Red Hub Food Co. Besides their well-regarded catering (which seems to be the bulk of their business), the lunch counter in the heart of Charlottesville serves a really nice variety of BBQ favorites at very reasonable prices. Seating is limited in the small space, with a few tables and a wall table inside a one or two tables outside, parking can also be a bit of challenge but if you come early you will be able to find some along the side of the building. My fiancee and I split the Pulled Pork Platter ($10), served with hush puppies, chips and a side of mac & cheese (be sure to check-in on yelp for a free blueberry lemonade). Split being the key word there, as the platter is more than enough for two people. You get a broad selection of BBQ sauces to try at the table, and odds are you will do what I did and just keep trying them all until you finish that juicy pulled pork. The Mac & Cheese was gooey and delectable, hush puppies fried and moist, and the homemade chips also did not disappoint. Is Red Hub Food Co. the best BBQ in Charlottesville? No, but it's certainly near the top, serving reliable BBQ favorites at a price and serving size that's tough to beat.

We had 5:30pm reservations and were seated immediately. The host was warm, acknowledged the occasion, and honored my request for a quieter table by placing us in a bay-window nook. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. The space echoed so badly we could barely hear each other, and the setting sun combined with the AC being accidentally turned off made the area feel like a sauna. Our water glasses were filled within minutes, so we thought service would be smooth. Instead, we sat for another 15 minutes before anyone greeted us--while a table seated after us was helped promptly and served at a noticeably faster pace. I understand large parties require attention (there was a group of 10-12 nearby), but as a former server myself, I've never allowed smaller tables to feel forgotten. When our server, Lucian (sp?), finally arrived, we immediately placed drink and appetizer orders because we were already starving. The appetizers came out about 20 minutes later--still before our drinks. The brussels sprouts were excellent and worth the wait. The biscuit basket was good, though the butter-to-biscuit ratio felt off, and the apple butter was surprisingly delicious. Our entrées didn't arrive until at least 45 minutes after that. The pacing was simply poor, and we consistently felt like an afterthought. While our server was polite, he didn't initiate conversation, offer suggestions, mention happy hour, or acknowledge our daughter's birthday. He didn't even suggest dessert. Meanwhile, the six-top behind us--seated well after we were--was wrapping up their meal as ours was just being served. The food presentation was beautiful. The pot roast, however, was underwhelming. It lacked seasoning and sauce, and the vegetables were forgettable--very few potatoes, no carrots. "Not your normal pot roast" was accurate, but not in a good way. The shrimp and grits were excellent, with great seasoning and a flavorful sauce. The salmon was moist and well-prepared, though it still had a few scales on the end of the filet. Once we finished eating, we again waited for our server to return. We eventually had to wave him down for boxes and again to request the check. Parking in the back was convenient early in the evening, though I imagine it becomes difficult later. Would we return? Unfortunately, probably not. We've been treated better, served more efficiently, and appreciated more fully at other restaurants--including one almost directly across the street. What we hoped would be a memorable celebration ended up feeling ho-hum at a high price--too high for the experience we received.

They neither responded to my email nor the review with any sort of explanation or apology which suggests that they don't really care. So I'll share this on Yelp too so others are aware of their poor customer service. We visited this restaurant with a group of seven and were excited to try it, especially because the outdoor seating area looked like a great spot for dinner. Unfortunately, the experience ended up being very disappointing. Service was extremely slow and disorganized from the start. About 15 minutes after ordering, a different waitress brought food to our table that we hadn't ordered, then quickly took it away without much explanation. From there, things only got worse. Our meals came out slowly over the course of 30-45 minutes, just one or two plates at a time, with no communication about the delays. Our four-year-old waited nearly 45 minutes for a simple order of fish sticks. Even basic service was lacking. We had to ask multiple times for something as simple as an apple juice refill, and it still took far too long to arrive. Toward the end of the meal, our waitress stopped checking on our table altogether, which made it difficult to order dessert. The food itself was pretty good, which is the only reason this isn't a one-star review. However, the poor service and lack of attentiveness completely overshadowed the experience. Overall, it was frustrating and disappointing, and we don't plan to return.

Anyway, on to the food: ordered two meat plate (brisket and pulled pork) with fries and coles slaw. Fries were the highlight of the meal. Hot, crispy, seasoned...awesome. Cole slaw was good....but it was super tangy (vinegary) for my taste. Don't get it wrong, it was good, just hard to eat all of it thanks to the tang. On to the meat. Got a pretty good sized pile of pulled pork and a couple slices of brisket. Both meats were lukewarm at best. Pork was dry (thank goodness for the NC vinegar sauce). The brisket made up for the porks dryness, it was extra greasy and extra fatty. Like, for real, do you think people are going to eat the fat layer between the lean point meat and the fatty upper meat? Yeah, not me. But since the brisket was also lukewarm (more like lukecold) it really didn't make a difference. I did think the Vision BBQ sauce tasted pretty good. If Brianna would have come back by after I got my meal I would have sent it back....and probably would have just left without worrying over a replacement, or a comp, or anything. Secondary issue: went to the mens room. It was just nasty. You get once shot to make an impression, and this one was not good. Would not/will not repeat.
