I was ecstatic to try Select Oyster considering Neptune Oyster is my favorite restaurant in Boston. I have recently become a weekly regular at Neptune due to its proximity to my apartment and my unhealthy obsession with the Johnny Cake. Select Oyster was a solid experience but the food and the service simply did not live up to Michael Serpa's former legendary residence.
I have a MAJOR issue with the 20% pre-tax gratuity being already included in the bill. Even most high-end fine dining restaurants don't add a mandatory gratuity to your bill so I do not see why a casual restaurant like Select Oyster would implement such an act. During most fine dining experiences, the service is top-notch, and the staff is working diligently swapping out fresh plates and utensils between courses so I understand the justification. However at Select you will go thirsty and continue to eat on dirty plates because the house staff is extremely inattentive. I found it to be unacceptable that I was left with an empty water glass on several occasions and was still paying 20% gratuity. Normally I wouldn't care but this restaurant claims that the reason for the gratuity is so "the house service staff can focus on delivering great hospitality to guest and not focus on how much they will be making in gratuity." Well, the mandatory gratuity has actually done the opposite. The house staff doesn't really care about the providing excellent service because they are going to get the gratuity regardless of how attentive they are. It doesn't take a genius to realize that you gotta give people incentives to work. Why do you think most restaurants do not include it automatically in the bill?
We started off with some refreshing oysters, all of which were from the East Coast. We decided to try one of each variety on the menu totally to 6 oysters. There were zero oysters offered from the West Coast. For a restaurant with the name "oyster" in its title, I was shocked that there was not a larger variety of selection.
After the oysters, we moved on to the dayboat scallop ceviche with lime marinate, shallots and cilantro. This was clearly fresh as when I passed the kitchen during my visit to the loo, I could see them shucking and preparing the scallops. This dish was interesting but nothing special. There was this dark red sauce on top which looked like it was prepared from frying the shallots that was tasty.
The next course was the uni toast which was a special on the menu that day. I am a fan of sea urchin prepared in anyway so I certainly enjoyed this dish. As soon as the rich and creamy texture uni touches your lips, you know that you will not be in for a disappointment. I have to admit though, I have had better quality sea urchin elsewhere so I was far from impressed.
Next we tried the Spanish octopus, which was my favorite dish. For you octopus lovers, in my opinion, I would even go as far as recommending for you to dine at Select Oyster just to try the octopus. I enjoyed Select's version of Spanish octopus more than Neptune's version and thats a bold statement. The octopus was grilled to perfection, with the perfect balance of moisture and crisp. The sides it was served with were just as delightful, especially the blistered snap peas. There were also a few roasted tomatillos and serrano chilis thrown into the mix for added flavor.
For our main course, we ordered the roasted lobster catalan, a Spanish preparation which you could probably guess from the name. This dish was a rather unique take on lobster as most of the time lobster is poached with butter and no spices or herbs etc. This dish had lots of different Spanish flavors and was served with sweet peppers and roasted Vidalia onions. I usually like my lobster covered in plain old yummy butter and nothing else but it was fun mixing it up this time.
Overall, I thought the food was pretty good, but pricey. The prices are higher than Neptune and the portions are smaller. Now if the food and service were actually better, I would say that it is worth it. The service was slow and I would not have normally cared but the mandatory gratuity coupled with the subpar service hit a nerve for me. On a separate note, most restaurants that have a mandatory gratuity have it set to 18%, NOT 20%. read more
