We came here after an event on campus and we were pretty hungry. The prices are as follows on the UC Davis Segundo DC website: $13.50 Breakfast (7-11 AM) · $15.00 -- Lunch (11 AM-5 PM) · $15.00 -- Dinner (5-10 PM). For all you can eat at several stations with great varieties of cultural cuisines and tons of choices from vegan to vegetarian to meats and more meats, I'd say this is a pretty good deal. We started with the Mongolian grill noodle station as there was already a line by the time we got to Segundo DC and we figured it would just get longer and longer. We waited about 15-20 minutes and each got our own bowl of grilled noodles with meat (but only chicken was available) and many different kinds of veggies. It tasted good, but somehow it also seemed healthier than the version at buffet places and at Mongolian BBQ restaurants elsewhere. Next, I made myself a salad and it was very fresh and full of different veggies and interestingly, they also had deli meats and hard boil eggs and other cooked meats such as grilled diced cubes of beef in this salad bar. So while it definitely had everything for vegan and vegetarian diners, it had plenty of choices for meat lovers too. On Saturdays, apparently not every station is opened, but the rotisserie station was available so I tried their rotisserie chicken next and it was very good. It was juicy, tender, roasted and seasoned to perfection. As for the dining experience besides the food, it's a dining common, but it was nicely laid out and the decor and color scheme throughout were calming and cool, not bad at all for a college dining hall. All in all, the Segundo DC is a pretty nice place to eat at and it sure beats the dining experience I had as an undergrad. These college students are eating well. There are days where it's extremely mid, or below. But there are days where it's great and I could go crazy with the amount of food I'll consume. I've never eaten here even though this is my alma mater. Segundo DC is the only one open on the weekend. We came for an event and decided to have a late lunch here. For $13 a person (adults and any kid over 3), it's not bad. There are quite a few choices. We went to the Mongolian BBQ first and it was very tasty although I think they use vegetable or canola oil. You add your own sauces at the end which is a good idea vs they add it for you. There's only chicken as the meat option, but plenty of veggies to choose from. The salad bar is quite good with a good variety of veggies plus we enjoyed the apple walnut salad and the curry tortellini salad, both very tasty. I was impressed that there were good quality deli meats too (pastrami and thin sliced as well as cubed pork loin roast). There's also a few kinds of cheeses to make sandwiches with and egg salad and tuna salad too. The soup bar wasn't impressive, only had a mustard green and pork soup and Thai curry soup. Hot food wise there's also roasted bbq chicken and rice. Overall, good value and delicious for a dorm dining hall. It's a hit or miss. During some events, it's amazing. Meats are often overcooked, under seasoned, dry. Vegetables are oily and overcooked. If you have a meal plan, eating here can sometimes make you depressed. I started making my own food and I do a much better job. read more

It's almost been a full 3 quarters eating at the Segundo DC 5 days per week and I haven't gotten bored yet. When I go at the normal serving hours, they always have something good. My personal favorites are when they make pasta with thick creamy sauce. Definitely a must try. The Mac and cheese is usually good. The staff really try their best for the themed food nights. The Harry Potter night was amazing. The butter beer was fun and tasty. For May 4th, the theme was May the fourth be with you. They was an actual R2-D2 rolling around, staff were dressed in Star Wars outfits, and their were giant cut outs and cute decorations. If all else fails, you have the Wok which is basically Mongolian bbq but they only cook it with chicken. You also have a consistent supply of bread, spreads, cereals, and milk. Fourteen dollars for all you can eat, but food is hit/miss. The chicken and some of their meats are regularly overcooked, dry, and underseasoned. I also do not understand the habit of putting mushrooms in everything, especially the burger, which is probably the worst thing they have. PLEASE just have a regular beef burger. In all honesty, the price is great for the amount of food that you can get but it is absolutely not worth it if you are looking for a good meal. All of the food is mediocre at best and under seasoned. If you want some good food in or around davis, this is not the place to go. My favorite Dining Commons at UC Davis! Segundo is very spacious, clean, and has a friendly staff. It's close to Umall and rite aid, so its convenient for off-campus students to dine~ The quality of food and atmosphere has definately improved since my freshman year. They now have a panini press and a waffle maker, which can be used at any meal. I like how they have the food display outside of the Dining Commons so people know what will be on the menu today. :) Came here around 12:30 PM for lunch with a friend, it was pretty crowded but we managed to grab a table. They have variety of food such as burgers, fries, salad bar, sandwiches, mongolian bbq, ice cream, cookies, and many more depending on the day~ The salad bar is amazing since there are so many toppings and dressing to choose from. Very healthy! My favorite are the pizzas (cuz I am an unhealthy slob. haha). They are so cheesy and hot every time I get them. Late night cookies are also delicious too~ They are always gooey and fresh out of the oven if you go at the right time. For lunch, they had mac and cheese with ham, and is was delicious, I loved how they added paprika to the casserole. The chicken patties and fries were good, but I wish they were crispier and the bun was toasted. The lines can get pretty long during rush hours (12-1PM for lunch, 6-7PM for dinner), so I would not go during those times if you don't have too much time. Out of the three dining commons on campus (Tercero, Segundo, and Cuarto), I would say Segundo is the easiest to access! It's right by the ARC and parking lot. Also, It is as spacious as Tercero, and I feel like it does provide a good variety of food. Someone like myself, may be concerned about the "Transfer 20" or "Freshman 15", but honestly, the dining commons have both healthy food and unhealthy food. I would say the portions are decent - not too much or little. You can always ask the chefs to customize to your needs too. My Favorites Here: - MONGOLIAN BBQ! I remember hating the DC so much as a freshman, but now I get excited every time I can get swiped in. I prefer the Segundo DC over the Tercero and Cuarto, even though Tercero brings back great memories. I love the selection of healthy food! I always leave super happy after filling my stomach with organic fruits and veggies, whole grains, and other good eats. They have such a huge selection of food, that you'll be covered no matter what you prefer. I used to eat anything so I was content with their pizza, burgers, and plentiful desserts. Segundo DC, I feel is better than Tercero and Cuarto DC. I don't know what it is, but I always feel more satisfied when I eat here. Back in Freshman year, the food was really good, but slowly started to decline in quality as the year went on. I might have just gotten sick of the food like many other freshmen, but who knows. Now, as a senior, I can't say that the food is any better still. It's food that's made fresh for you and it's all you can eat. Whenever I go to the DC nowadays, I'm just like, "I don't have to cook today." Every now and then, the DC will hold theme nights from Italian to French to even Harry Potter night. Those are the days you definitely want to go, as the food will be different and normally better. Overall, the Mongolian BBQ has been consistent throughout the years for lunch. Now that I have graduated UC Davis, sometimes I miss the dining commons. I was one of the first class to experience the new renovated dining commons. I am a big fan of Segundo. I did eat here for at least two entire years of my undergraduate experience. I came back the other day, and I still love it. My absolute favorite item at the dining common is the turkey tortilla soup. SO GOOD! Okay, so it was a little bit more salty than I remembered but still so good!!! I love the tortilla chips with it, and I add a little bit of pepper, and it's delicious! It's a great consistency! I also love the mongolian BBQ. Tip: If you want a vegetable in your mongolian wok dish, just go to the salad bar and get it and add it in. Sometimes, I want corn or mushrooms, and it's not always there. So salad bar, here I come! I think the pizza, burgers, fries are mediocre. If I see pesto pizza, I am taking it. They aren't amazing but they're edible. I like the salad bar, there's enough options to keep me happy. There's also UCD brand olive oil and such on the side so you can make your own dressing with quality products. I just learned there's hummus and the bread with the hummus is so good. This is the best DC compared to the Tercero DC and Cuarto DC! So if you are out of town and wonder which one you should go to, go to this one! Cheap, good buffet. I love the special events that they have, such as Harry Potter night, steak night and etc. Those are the events you should look out for because they cook up different kinds of food that they don't usually serve! I have dined at several of the student dining halls at various universities in California and I'm convinced that Segundo is one of the best, if not the best buffet in the state. The dining hall is very spacious, clean, and accommodating. Parking is next to the facility, very convenient. Segundo is set up like a food court with various daily specials at each one of the five food preparation stations, as well as the extensive salad bar, dessert bar, and drink stations that have more options than you could possibly want. You pay one price to enter the dining area which operates like a typical all-you-can-eat buffet. The food is more gourmet than expected, and the dessert bar has some real treasures that would make high end restaurants envious. Healthy options galore in every area, even Aggie burgers for a better than average veggie burger. Segundo is open to the public and prices for breakfast, lunch, or dinner are more than reasonable for what is offered. Students, of course, have dining packages to reduce their costs. I just graduated, and I will miss the food here for sure! The main reason I came is to eat at the DC was when they were serving Thai noodle peanut salad. IT WAS AMAZING. I always paired it with a salad that I put together and it made my taste buds holler! I wish the recipe on how they made that was available! The other food was tasty too but not that amazing. They usually have burgers, pizzas, soups, and the Mongolian noodles (which is really popular during lunch). They also have sandwiches, cereal, tea, salads, fruit, etc. It's a DC, and it is sort of expected. This is not related, but the food they had during orientation was terrible. So prior to moving in, I was dreading the DC food. However, I am pleasantly surprised to like the food here..quite a lot! Nothing compares to home food because 1) it's home food, 2), it's authentic (insert ethnicity here) food, but for what I consider a giant cafeteria, this DC is pretty darn good. **Continue reading if you want to know more, if not, you might want to stop here because I have A LOT to say.** Breakfast always has oatmeal, cereal, omelets, donuts, muffins, make-your-own waffles, fruits, toast, bagels, etc. Bacon, sausages, pancakes (blueberry, banana, chocolate chip, buttermilk, honey nut), waffle squares, french toast, crepes, egg o'muffins, etc. alternate on the menu. I loved everything. I notice that they try incorporate Vietnamese cuisine - they have "Sizzling Saigon Crepes" aka banh xeo - this is not the slightest bit authentic, but hey, they have shrimps and bean sprouts and pork, and if I get a good plate, a crispy shell. So, good enough for me. They occasionally serve chicken spring rolls with spot-on peanut sauce and banh mi thit. Again, not too authentic, but they hit it pretty close for these two. Pastas are usually a hit or miss, depends on your taste. They have something called a Burrito Loco, which is their version of Chipotle burritos - your choice of beef or pork, beans, and dressings made into a burrito. Yum! You can never go wrong with their pizzas. Almost always flavorful with a crispy crust. Their crazy bread (breadsticks) is also pretty good, which is responsible for the long lines at Saucy. Burgers, fries, and grilled cheese are also a safe choice. I am not a fan of the Mongolian Wok make-your-own noodles, but all of my friends are. However, the already-made meals served here are quite decent - Teriyaki chicken is always flavorful but on the salty side, curry is good, etc. The salad bar is quite dreamy if you like salads, which unfortunately, I don't. I like my leafy greens cooked, and the DC doesn't always offer that. However, they have decent broccoli and spinach, and I love their baked squash and zucchini. The Blue Onion occasionally serves a yummy Vegetables on Rice platter (eggplants, tomatoes, greens on white or brown rice). I don't know why the person below said to avoid the Theme Nights..those are the best nights ever! Who cares about the crowds and long lines when the food is especially tasty! Farm-to-College had: good flat-iron steak, juicy roasted chicken, special tomato-sauce fettuccine, special grape pizza, and lots more special entrees. Comfort Foods themes had: heavenly St. Louis ribs, pretty good buttermilk fried chicken, good mashed potatoes, so-so meatloaf, so-so clam chowder, and a delicious and moist vanilla-chocolate candy cake and a strawberry shortcake. Winterfest had: a not-so-good tough steak, yummy ravioli, not as good as other themed meals. Onto baked goods/desserts - I absolutely love the hot fruit cobbler they serve for brunch. I love their lemon bars even though I typically do not like lemon. The 7-layers bars is scrumdiddlyumptious. Other things I love are their pies (apple, pumpkin, key lime, assorted fruits), and cookies! Also notable, they have bananas flambe and cherries jubilee on certain Make-Your-Own-Sundae Nights..nothing beats hot yummy fruit on a your ice cold ice cream. I didn't name all the desserts, but I pretty much love all of their desserts...gotta watch out for the Freshman 15! Last but not least, I have got to rave about their fruit varieties! Most people complain about their fruits, but hey, they always have, at the least, bananas, oranges, and 2-3 varieties of apples (Granny, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Pink Lady, rarely Gala, rarely Fuji). When in season, there are red and yellow plums, yellow nectarines, and very very rarely, white peaches. Different varieties of pears pop up now and then. They also frequently have cantaloupe, honey dew melon, and grapefruit. Occasional watermelon, and on more special days, strawberries. Phew, what an essay. Its mind boggling that this dining common is ranked as one of the best in the nation. Let's just say I would hate to try the food selection at other universities. What to eat: I only recommend coming here for breakfast. And during breakfast, there's only one item I recommend getting -- the omelette. The omelettes are made-to-order over gas fired stoves, and filled with a selection of protein and veggies of your choice. There's generally the same veggies each day while the protein selection is rotated daily. The best meat is their spicy chorizo, while their worst is leftover cut-up steak from dinner the night before. Oh wait, there's also the salad bar. If you're into all that green stuff this is the place. With three rows of salads, dressings, vegetables, and soups, you're bound to make a salad that suites your palate. What NOT to eat: Everything else that is served here is certainly edible, but quickly becomes disappointing when eaten too often. Sometimes, too often means once. The pasta, burgers, basic grilled meats, wannabe-Asian dishes should be avoided at all costs. Some dishes such as steak are definitely hit or miss. Try them once if you dare, but don't blame me when you have to carry 5 full plates of food to the disposal area. Catering Services: For some reason, the food provided through their catering services is miles above what is served in the dining commons. From BBQ chicken, to mac-n-cheese, to ribs and steak, their catering food is definitely 4 stars. I guess they serve their worst work to students. read more

As much as I want to give this place a higher rating...I just cannot. If you are not a resident here and you are actually paying for a meal at the DC, then you might as well pay a little extra and spend it elsewhere. Yes, it's buffet style, but even then I have definitely been to better buffets. The food: Pasta/Spaghetti (in general) - lacks flavor and is almost always watered down. Rarely will you ever find the pasta with meat in it too. It is just no good. Pizza (in general) - is okay but a little bit on the greasier side. Cereal (in general) - there are many options! Once you have been living here for a long period of time, you will begin to swipe yourself in just to eat cereal as a meal. Soups (in general) - I recommend either clam chowder (with few to no clams), cream of mushroom, OR MY FAVORITE - creamy tomato (this one is actually good)! Mongolian bbq - I have not had this in YEARS. At first it may seem appetizing, but after a while it just feels super MSG and oily. Ice-Cream (in general) - it's okay, not too many options but is decent enough. Burgers (in general) - fresh (even though eating a burger is not typically part of my daily diet). Salad bar - this is actually good - they provide many different dressings and a variety of different toppings. Rice plates (in general) - best thing in the DC in my opinion! Although it is a bit hard to digest afterwards and normally it makes me feel bloated..BUT there is actually flavor unlike the pasta. REGARDLESS OF ALL THIS NEGATIVITY: my favorite meal at the DC has to be breakfast (which is why this place even deserved 2 stars). This is something that is actually worth paying for. It is not THE best "breakfast joint," but you get to create your own omelette and on good days they have bacon or sausage patties (I will say that I miss tater tots from their menu though). I also enjoy SOME of the DC's theme nights.. mainly because it is creative, but the food is still mediocre. School and the dining commons just gave me another reason to hate it. Meatless Mondays?! What in the actual F$CK? For one I do not eat the food that my food eats. Two, black bean burger?! I accidentally mistook this for a real burger and as I took my first bite I could taste the LIES, my heart almost stopped from being clogged with it. I've eaten at other UC dining commons, and UC Davis has the best food selection. Segundo in particular has the best food out of the 3 campus dining commons. Breakfast is great. Made to order omelettes, fresh donuts, bacon/sausages, waffles, it's all great. Lunch and DInner are both great as well. Fresh made mongolian noodles, the burgers are good, etc. A few hints though: -avoid eating on those "theme" nights. They usually have at least one theme night a quarter. These nights the place is PACKED, finding seats is stressful, the lines for each food station are long, and honestly the quality of the food on those nights are not that great. -if you're a hungrier person, you can ask for double burgers (2 patties) and even 3 patties. If you're nice, the staff is helpful. -If there isa fair number of people at the DC, don't be afraid of opening up the back corner of seating, that's typically roped off. -They advise against putting chocolate chips in the waffle iron, but you have to have chocolate chip waffles at least ONCE. -be creative with the food -avoid the "sushi" they have on special nights. read more

The bad reviews are given by PICKY eaters. I'm a hardcore undergrad with meal plans throughout my school years, and segundo dc is definitely the best of all 3 on campus. However, i don't eat breakfast, but lunch and dinner are definitely better than cuarto or tercero. Segundo also has the biggest dc and the tables aren't crowded together like tercero. Mongolian Grill is definitely one of the better lunch options out in the dc; i suggest to get spinach,mushies, etc. from the salad bar if they don't offer it in the mongolian grill section. read more

All I can say is - Santa Fe Chicken Salad. Everything else is just okay. The Mongolian food is okay, but the people there don't really know how to cook it. They usually just throw it on and push it around, and I sometimes end up with remaining chunks of old burned food mixed into my dish (yuck.) But hey, Segundo has it, and Cuarto and Tercero don't. You can have eggs made to order, or you can have a personalized omelet! Add that to a side of tater tots and bacon, and you have yourself a great meal to start the day! I'd say to skip dinner and go to late night instead, because for some reason the food is just made better. Pizza is always the best at night, and the cookies are AMAZING! I don't know why they can't make soft, gooey, delicious cookies all day every day. And the teriyaki chicken bowls never disappoint - but those are only on certain days. Also! If you're late night studying, get a pizza or a box of cookies to go, because most of you won't use up your swipes anyways. All in all, I miss DC. And I wish that they made better meal plans for upperclassmen so that I could eat there more. Now I have to sit and wait around for a freshman buddy to swipe me in. Sad times. read more

Wait... do people actually rate the DC? Not sure what to say about the DC other than I def got sick of it freshman year and that santa fe chicken salads are THE BOMB. Segundo is slightly annoying in that the bathroom is past the swipe-point so you have to let them know if you need to go and want to go back in to finish your meal. They also have some seating problems sometimes as Segundo seems to be the most popular DC to go to, especially for those who aren't freshmen. Food choices here are usually pretty on the meh side with some exceptions (Santa fe chicken salad. Do it.) that shine, but you cant really decide on that unless you check the menu (dining.ucdavis.edu) beforehand. My favorite days would be the times when freshmen would shoot me a text telling me there were santa fe chicken salads and offer to swipe me in, but those times are long past now and will forever be a memory. Hopefully, I'll be able to go for another Santa Fe Chicken Salad again one day, but if memory serves me right, they were only available for some tuesdays at lunch, and with work and things, it kinda makes things impossible. Anyways, distractions aside, the DC is cheap for a buffet, even if the food isnt really the greatest. The ~$10 price tag is actually pretty worth it, but you can usually find some friends or hit people up on the swipes fb group (though technically not allowed) and get someone to swipe you in from anywhere from $1-5 depending on how far into the year it is. read more

This place has pretty good food. I love the sausages during breakfast (breakfast in general is awesome). The food here is pretty regular but for how many people they have to serve its really awesome. And if you like something chances are a lot more people like it too, so come early ;) read more

Segundo Dining Commons - Tacos! Super good - Cafeteria Near Me - Davis, California

The average dining common, I guess. Came here on a Davis students' dime (Score!), and decided to get my grub on. Actually, from my experiences with UC dining commons, this place was pretty impressive. It had a pretty diverse selection of food for a Sunday during brunch. Omlettes, burgers, and everything else was pretty much a blur. The food was pretty tasty, for a dining common that is, and I think that says a lot. There was a lot of room to sit, and it was also pretty clean, always a plus. There was also a make your own waffle station, although I was pretty confused as to how it worked, yeah I know, dumb. Didn't come out as nicely as I would have liked, but that was my fault. Instructions would've been nice though! AND! I thought it was pretty cool that the waffles came out with the Davis Aggies logo! So much pride! hahaahahahaha, my horse looked like total crap. I'm pretty sure I ate like 5 servings of ice cream. That's what happens when you leave me with an unattended ice cream freezer. I appreciate the trust. All in all, just another dining common, but this one was on the better side. Either that or I was starving. Either way, this place is pretty good if you've got a Davis student to swipe you in! read more

It's not bad for the all you can eat part, but I wouldn't pay to eat here during regular nights unless I checked the menu beforehand. I recommend coming here on the special nights, but even those nights aren't guaranteed satisfaction. Breakfast isn't worth it. It's standard scrambled eggs, meat (bacon, sausage, OR ham), etc. The best part is eggs cooked to order. Mongolian BBQ is decent during lunch, but it depends on who cooks it. The Blue Onion Tofu definitely depends on the batch. Dinner is alright, but it's usually a miss for me. That's when I go for the cereal. Late Night cookies are the best part of the meal. The sandwiches are also pretty good. Everything else is below mediocre. The weekend brunches are also recommended. They have a mix of breakfast and lunch, which is quite interesting. Never have a good selection of food. Hours are terrible between classes. But it's school dining can't expect greatness. This is supposedly one of the best UC dinning commons and I really would hate to see what other schools are doing. I had better food served when I was in the Marines out in the field. read more
