This place reminds me of the bakeries in Europe. As soon as you walk in it smells of fresh baked goods. The counter top full of packed goods makes your mouth water. We ordered the chile relleno toast and the corn flap jacks. Both delicious! We took two pastries to go. The guava cream loaf was a little dry but tasty. The olive oil mixed berry cake was sooo good. Crispy edges, moist, sweet and perfect This place is easy to miss cause the sign is on the corner/side of the building. One of the lady's that worked there was a little rude to us. Just got some of their bread last night at the South Pas Farmer's Market, and I can't say enough good things about it. It's the best bread I've every had. Make sure you slice it into thick slices and toast it before serving as it seems to soften it a bit. This bread has incredible texture, and taste. It's not just filler bread like all the other bread out there. This bread is a main course - just have with some cheese, or butter, and it's a perfect breakfast or lunch. I noticed some not so great reviews about the service, or the lines at their location and on some of the lunches they serve. I've been at the shop a couple of times, and yes it's busy during peak times and I agree that it's a little disorganized, but their breads are best eaten at home in my opinion and I don't usually go to eat in. You also have to expect some chaos when a small shop gets mobbed, :). This place is not fast food, they don't have an assembly line, and training videos for their employees like large chains do. The food was fresh and good and interesting, but a few points were lacking: 1. Very few tables. They are preparing to open an additional room nextdoor, but it was not set up yet. Expect a long wait in a noisy and undecorated room. 2. Prices are a bit high for an informal sandwich or breakfast. 3. No sign out front. One just needs to "know" by word of mouth, apparently. 4 No receipt given when paying. Came here for Sunday brunch a few weeks ago and fell in love. Everything on the menu and in the bakery case looked so good it was hard to decide. The Asian lady at the front didn't tell me they ran out of brioche bun and substituted with the country bun for this sandwich until she handed me my order which gave me no choice. 3.5 Stars for first visit. Breakfast and lunch served till 3:30 pm when the kitchen closes but the bakery closes at 5 pm. They are closed one day of the week, I think Sunday. I've been so curious about this bakery, both Seed and Lincoln have been on my list to try and this is the one I chose to visit on this trip to the Pasadena area. What you will find here is a commitment to sourcing really great ingredients from local farmers market, sustainable and organic items as well. I think it is great to support a local business which goes the extra mile to source really great ingredients. Their particular style of bread baking also uses a natural leavening agent. We came in for lunch and tried a few items. With this being a fairly new business, and with us being unfamiliar with the menu we were so happy to have a friendly helpful person to order with. Tan, the girl at the register, was an absolute sweetheart answering all of our questions and steering us towards some menu items since it was our first visit. Some items were hits for us and others were misses. 4.5 stars $11 The grilled eggplant sandwich is large and easily shared among two. Tan said this was one of her favorite menu items and I can see why. Better eaten for dine in rather than take out, this sandwich can get a bit messy to eat with the grilled eggplant and other ingredients wanting to escape from the bread but it was thoroughly enjoyed by myself and my dining companion. The French style bread/baguette this was served on was really good. The cold sandwich came with a walnut pesto, cilantro, house made pickles and one other pickled item, the flavors just popped and all worked together and the grilled eggplant was the star. The spinach salad on the side of the sandwich was dressed with an acidic forward dressing and was not as much of a win and remained untouched (I love lemon vinaigrettes but this tasted like it needed more oil) although the watermelon radish sliced on top was a nice touch and enjoyed. 3 stars for Breakfast Bowl with Lentils and Kale $9 -this dish was beautiful to look at but so salty we could not eat it. The kale was wilted in with the lentils and I really wish we could have eaten more because it was such a healthy offering. The chef kindly offered to take it back. 3 stars for the Avocado Toast with Beets served sliced in two halves $7: this sounded very enticing so we ordered this as well and each could again only take one bite. The avocado was so bright green and fresh, mounded on the toast I could not wait to take a bite, but it too was unpleasantly salty and acidic and the dressing for the beets was salty and acidic and neither of us wanted another bite, again the chef kindly offered to take it back. 3 stars for the gorgonzola fig and fennel quiche $8. I saved this for breakfast the next day and shared most of it with my husband since I was not a fan. I really wanted to love this but it was salty and had a strong nutmeg flavor, the bits of fennel had a lot of stringy fiber. It tasted freshly made and looked stunning but was just ok in overall flavor. My husband-not knowing about my experience from the day before with some of the other dishes here- rarely complains about salt and he said the quiche was salty...go figure it wasn't just me. 4.25 stars for dessert: $5 The flourless chocolate cake was really quite enjoyable, it tasted great, was a tiny bit crumbly but hit the spot for a dark chocolate fix. I thought it was a very small piece for the price. The ambiance is clean yet humble and nothing exciting, this is a somewhat small space. We sat at a table next to some bags of flour which were stacked on one side of the restaurant. Nevertheless, other than the trial and error with our order, we were able to relax and take our time, it was also fun to people watch as customers came in and ordered. Many wanted to order from the café menu but the kitchen had then already closed. It was great to see the bakery almost sell out of bread and sweet pastries before they closed. Considering I live so close to this place I really wanted to love it. However, this is how my experience went: Me: Having read the positive reviews on their bread I look for their selection of loaves. I'm a little disappointed when I see they only have two types and each is about HALF the size of a regular loaf of bread. At best I can make two sandwiches with it but wth it may be good. Cashier: "Hi what can I get you?" Me: "I'll take a loaf of the whole wheat ciabatta please." Cashier: "Great. That'll be shhheve dollars." Me: "Sorry?" Cashier: "That'll be seven ($7.00) dollars." Me: "Oh, no I only need one loaf. Nothing else please." Cashier: "Uh... yes I know. It's uhhhh.... $7.00." [Insert long awkward silence while my brain processes that this half loaf of bread is about twice the price of a regular-sized, high-quality loaf elsewhere. Even Whole Foods--the company that brought us $6 asparagus infused pints of water--charges about $4 to $5 for a high-quality large loaf.] Me: "Oh! Wow! Ok. Well... hmmm... nevermind then. That's ok. Thank you." I start heading for the door. Cashier #2: Approaches me on my way out and defensively yet nicely says, "So I just wanted to let you know that our bread isn't like regular bread. It's made with ancient grains. We also don't use preservatives." Me: I know what ancient grains are. They're simply grains that haven't been genetically modified over the years and guess what? They are common as all hell (e.g., quinoa) and can be bought for the cheap at just about any decent market you go to. As for the lack of preservatives, I don't think I've been to a single self-respecting bakery that freshly bakes their own bread with preservatives. Deciding against having a serious argument about the ridiculousness of a $7 half loaf of bread... "Honestly I don't mind paying extra for good quality bread. But $7 is a bit too much. Sorry. Thank you though." Cashier #2: "Actually $7 is on the low end for bread like this." Really? Did she just go there? She's now trying to convince me that $7 for a half loaf of bread is a steal? Do you realize where we are? This is not Manhattan, London, or Dubai. This is the Lake/Washington area of Pasadena. The same area where you've got a fair share of crackheads wandering about outside your business from time to time. The same area where there's a piñata and cumpleaños balloon shop next door to you and a couple "We buy gold!" and shady check cashing spots around the corner. And most importantly, the same area where there are numerous Armenian bakeries/markets that bake and sell fresh bread daily--surprisingly also without preservatives--for about $2 a pop. I have no reason to doubt that Seed's bread is good tasting bread. But a line needs to be drawn as to what prices are acceptable for high end goods and what prices are outright insulting to your customers' intelligence. If Seed decides to come back to reality and lower their prices so that they're competitive with other gourmet bakeries in LA then I'll give it another shot. Until then "no thank you" to $4 croissants and $7 half loaves of bread. read more

Terrible customer phone service-- called to ask if they have certain pastries available today, specifically strawberry croissants as I've seen them on several Yelp photos. The woman on the phone was being a bit rude and corrected me to say "they're guava, and no we don't have them today." Didn't really give me any more information as to when they'll have them so I proceeded to ask if it's usually made on the weekdays or certain times of the month. She was curt and said "we usually have them everyday but umm, we don't today because we close early." I see their hours that they're open until 2pm and this was already at 10am. Felt like the woman on the phone was peeved by a basic question from a customer that was just asking a simple question. Don't think having an attitude like that could help any customer wanting to support a business with that tone esp during this lockdown/struggling time for many businesses. Let me start with the good: The bread is very good and the staff were really nice and helpful. The not so good: I knocked off 3 stars due to the behavior of the bread maker. When I walked up to the store, he (I didn't realize who he was at that moment) was happily conversing with a small group just outside the store. When I approached to enter, he looked at me like I had a 3rd eye. He didn't greet me or even smile. After making my purchase of a 7 dollar loaf of bread, the staff started chatting with me about the store. The owner walks in past me and his staff and ignores me like I'm invisible. How does someone who's just opened a new business act like this? At the time, there was barely any product left and no one else in line. Would it kill you to greet ALL of your customers who are supporting you? Perhaps only "certain" customers are worthy of his attention. What a way to encourage repeat business --not! read more

The food here is pretty good. They have great breads and lots of Veggie options. They serve breakfast all day and I would say that the quality is right up there with any higher end establishment. That's the good news. The bad news is that they are really terrible when it comes to time management and delivery of your food. Every time I come in they are "a little backed up in the kitchen". Today I came in, somehow expecting a different outcome, and again they are anticipating a 30-40 minute wait for my order. Very good bread. I bought a loaf of their Whole Grain Rustic, which I believe is their signature bread. It is so good. I think I can eat the whole thing in one sitting. The crust is solid, and the inside is soft. I just eat it by itself, but I think it would be great with some hummus or almond butter. The staff is really nice as well, and love to talk about all their bread and pastries. I will be visiting often because this bakery is in my 'hood. read more
