It was a busy weekend crowd when we stopped by Second Chance Diner in the town of Camillus. Second Chance Diner is located in the former home of Friendly's and the short lived Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant. When entering the Diner we were told the wait would be 30-40 minutes. We gave our name and patiently waited by being entertained by our phones. After about 15-20 minutes the hostess asked if we would be interested in being seated at the bar counter. We took the two stools and were promptly asked by our server is we would like coffee while handing us the menu. When the coffee came out we instantly loved the mug that it came in. We decided to purchase one on the spot! We ordered the Waffle Combo that comes with a Belgium waffle, two eggs any style, & choice of meat. I also order home fries for an extra side. My wife ordered the Veggie Benny with two poached eggs, spinach and tomato and a side of home fries. The two sunny side up eggs were cooked perfectly. The home fries were seasoned well and seemed to be cooked fresh. The Belgium Waffle had a fluffy interior and a slight crisp when you first cut into it. The Veggie Benny yoke had that "run" that you want when you first cut into it. Hollandaise sauce had a creamy, buttery flavor that complimented the Benny well. Second Chance Diner also serves beer & wine. They are also well known for their mimosa flights. When you do head out to the diner just remember to be patient. Went with family on Sunday morning. Not a long wait. Very visible specials board by the front door. Counter seating, booths, and tables fill a pretty tight space. Omelet and homefries: 3 eggs, cooked pretty well, good amount of fillings (I had bacon, onions, cheddar). Corned beef hash and eggs: When we asked if the hash was homemade we were told "it doesn't come from a can." Ordered it extra crispy (it tasted just like the kind that comes in a can, so if you like that then its spot on). Got 2 poached eggs and these were the only disappointment. Came sitting in a dish with a lot of water, so had to be careful transferring them to the hash. Must be cooked in a shallow egg pan because there was a bottom layer of set yolk on each egg. Huge frittata: Shared by 2 people, it was delicious and a good amount for each. Lots of fillings, not overpowered by pepperoni grease/flavor, and not overloaded with cheese. The homefries are individually fried, and I think this really helps with a frittata because the potato is very distinguishable. Fruit Pebble pancake: the kids menu is light on substance, but they were happy to cut any of the specialty pancake orders down to 1 pancake. Fruity pebbles throughout the pancake, also on top with whipped cream and a strawberry sauce/icing. Will be back for sure! read more

Great food, iffy but not terrible service. Our server was nice, but slow to check on us and take our orders throughout our meal. For example, my mom wanted a mimosa flight, but wasn't sure of the flavors she wanted so the server said she'd give her a minute, but she didn't come back until about 20 minutes later and there's only about 8 flavors to pick from for the flight. The food took forever to come out and our server never said anything while we waited almost 45 minutes for food and people who got there after us got their orders no problem. However, the food was really good, especially the corned beef hash. Honestly maybe the best corned beef hash I've had. Super crispy and well seasoned home fries and awesome pancakes. We ordered eggs over easy and all the yolks were perfectly runny. They've got a great variety of breakfast options and a nice, clean establishment. I will never return to this diner. I cannot believe how badly we were treated at this diner. Very rude staff, terrible customer service skills! We didn't even stay to eat, because they were unwilling to help us and very rude to us. One friend was worried they'd spit in our food and I believe she was exactly right. They would not give my friends and I a table and let us sit down and have coffee, until our whole party arrived, even though they had many empty tables! The staff wanted us to remain standing (awkwardly) and feeling crowded in the front corner of the restaurant and wait for another friend, who was running late. Had we stayed, we would've been standing there waiting for 30 mins. Ridiculous request! They didn't even offer for us to sit at the bar to wait. Then the staff did not care when I asked them once again, if we could please sit down; not only that, but then a waitress yelled at me and told me that I was rude, because I was unhappy with how we were being treated. On the backs of the "staff" shirts it reads "I know the owner too!" Sends a clear message that they have had plenty of experience with (displeasing) customers and that they do not care! Finally I got to visit Second Chance after they moved to their new location! As always the food was excellent, definitely 10/10. Got BYO omelette with their loaded home fries(a must try). My friend got the Greek omelette and she loved it. First time trying their mimosa flight and it was boozy and bang for the buck. After spending 50+ dollars on breakfast, we went to leave and our car had be blocked in. There were horizontal spots in the back, but when we had gotten there a car had parked halfway over their lines & with no parking left we followed suit. Given, we understood the issue with the lines, but if the other car wouldn't have been halfway over them we would've parked accordingly. From our understanding it was one of the managers cars. This did not sit well with us considering we just spent money at an establishment and the management is comfortable treating customers that way. We were told that it was designated "employee parking" when there was no signs whatsoever. We politely went in and explained the situation & we received dirty looks from the staff. Several pros and a couple of cons. Let me start with the positives. Nola, our waitress, was (mostly) great. As soon as I asked about GF toast, she was very helpful, letting me know what was GF and what wasn't. Sadly, we came specifically for the eggs "benny" as they had been highly recommended n the Syracuse Eats Facebook page, but the Hollandaise is not GF according to Nola (not sure why - it SHOULD be made of only eggs, butter, and lemon), but okay. I had the Greek omelette instead, which was pretty good (it has Greek olives, which is a first for me). Sadly, they deep fry their potatoes, which are, therefore, also not GF. Instead, I got a side of fruit, for an upcharge, and it was very good (not canned fruit, as I expected, but real fresh fruit - worth the extra money). Now the cons. I was a little shocked about the Hollandaise, but okay, I'm not the Keeper of the Recipe. I thought having deep fried potatoes was a little off for a diner, but okay (and NO hash browns, which is a bit shocking also). My big complaint - Coffee Mate instead of half and half for the coffee. Fail. And we had to ASK for more coffee, which is a major FAIL for a diner, IMHO. The food was decent, the atmosphere was great, the staff was friendly. Another restaurant I had to try due to their reputation locally and on Yelp. I have made two trips; one of which I wasn't impressed and one where I was. The first trip I came down with my parents. All three of us ordered the 2 x 2 x 2. While there was nothing necessarily wrong, I don't think it was anything special for the price or wait. Portions were nothing special except for the massive pancakes that I couldn't finish. I am really not a fan of their home fries which are just deep fried potatoes reminiscent of airport breakfast instead of the more traditional flat top cooked potatoes with onions. While not impressed, I did realize that people mostly seemed to come for their specialties and not the generic breakfast foods and vowed to come back. The second trip was much better. I came down with the guys from the firehouse and on their recommendation ordered the Corned Beef Benny. I was not disappointed! This thing was very delicious! The Benny was served with my not-so-favorite home fries but those even tasted better with the hollandaise sauce and broken yolk. came here yesterday with my boyfriend and we loved it! it's such a cozy cute/home spot - very modern with cute decorations. they had awesome mimosa drinks and the food was super tasty. i only ate half my pancake but it was delicious. the home fries were super good. my boyfriend got the stuffed french toast and he absolutely loved it as well. food quality was 10/10. service was 4/5. we waited for our drinks for almost 20 minutes... which then our food came out. it took way too long for our drinks to come and our server kept apologizing and saying she doesn't know what's taking so long - like seriously! what was taking so long... the bar was empty and it looked like we were the only ones that ordered mimosas. it wasn't that busy either. we didn't really mind the wait until we realized it's literally been 20-25 minutes since we ordered and our drinks didn't come out yet. i appreciated our server for apologizing on behalf of the bar but that was the only negative thing i had to say. Hands down my favorite place to have breakfast. I personally think their menu and prices are substantially better than rise n shine, however they don't have as much variety on drinks. The food is to die for and well worth every penny. The atmosphere is very open and modern. Our service has been hit or miss, our first visit was amazing but our second visit it took 10+ minutes to be greeted after we sat down. One thing I do wish they had was call ahead seating or reservations during COVID. Obviously this place is popular so business is steady any day of the week but it is small to begin with and social distancing for seating makes it even harder to get in in a timely fashion so having to sit outside and wait for 30+ minutes is discouraging. It would be nice to plan a time and arrive then instead of having to walk the door in to even get on the waiting list. read more

Please free to dine here if you like a stodgy, cold pancake and food that doesn't all come out together. I would also recommend this place if you have nothing else to do during the day since eating here takes HOURS! I have eaten here twice now. The first time there was an argument in the kitchen, resulting in half the staff leaving which lead to terrible service. The second time I went back, our party arrived at 8:30, we sat down at 9:30, and our food didn't arrive until 10:30. Needless to say I won't be giving this place a third chance. This establishment is one of CNY's best kept secrets, tucked away in the far corner of western Onondaga county. It's small but packs a huge wallop. There was whole lotta love injected into this spot by its staff and owners to make it work. At each restaurant I visit I usually have a "go to" on the menu, I can honestly say that's not the case here. Excellent menu variety! The menu items all seem like they'd be delicious. Portion sizes seem to be inconsistent though. One table would have huge portions and then another had small ones. I ordered coffee, side of hash browns, and banana pecan pancakes and my mother ordered a vegetable frittata. They were busy and shorthanded, which probably explains why I had to ask for my coffee after waiting quite awhile. Coffee came out piping hot! As soon as I received my coffee, my order was being served so couldn't enjoy my coffee while I waited on my food. The coffee was so hot that I couldn't drink it until I was finished with my meal. The coffee wasn't good; watery and tasted like instant. The side order of hash browns were small, but crispy. The portion size was large for 2 pancakes. It had 6 thin sliced pieces of super mushy banana and caramel syrup, which could've been skipped ( flavorless) on top and pecans inside the pancakes. The pecan pancakes themselves were delicious. Don't waste your money, just get pecan pancakes and you'll be happy. My mother's frittata was loaded with fresh veggies, especially spinach. The Italian Bread toast slices were really small! The food is great honestly. We have been going here for about a month and it was great. This week however it seems that they have raised their prices significantly. To the point where I would not come back anymore. I also had such a bad experience with a server this time around. I've always had great service, but our server today only saw us three times the whole time we were here. Once to get drinks, once to take our order, and once to give us our check. This place has become a regular meal site for our family. Food is good. Wait staff are pleasant. HOWEVER...today we went for breakfast and while seated within 15 minutes, I was VERY concerned that customers were allowed to come to the check in line with NO masks on. In addition a number of customers walked past our table with NO mask and no one said anything to them. NY state mandate is that restaurant customers must have on a mask except while seated. There are NO signs indicating the mask requirement or expectations. If I had not already gotten my meal, I would have left the establishment. Went to Second Chance for my first time today, and was definitely impressed. Small and quaint, nice kind of industrial/reclaimed kind of vibe decor. We sat at the counter and had a birdseye view of all the food coming out of the kitchen, wonderful presentation of everything! The food was delicious, creative pancake and French toast concoctions to satisfy any sweet tooth. Really fresh ingredients and wonderful freshly ground coffee.
