To begin with, this review is totally in the context of Evanston. Given that... I love Sea Ranch. The prices are reasonable. The sushi is good. Not as much variety as a lot of fancy places but that's ok. I'd rather have less of a selection of really good food than a great selection that's either extremely americanized (cream cheese, jalapenos, bacon)(not that I dislike those foods, I just have trouble with them in sushi). I've never had a problem with freshness, but I almost always modify my order from the listed menu in some way or another (usually no roe). I always get it to go, never done the AYCE. With Sea Ranch's prices, quality and flavor, I find it so surprising that Dozika, right down the street, can even stay in business. read more

I enjoy sushi, but hate the price. Sea Ranch to the rescue! Pretty good sushi at very reasonable prices means that my husband and I can order enough food for him to feel satisfied, without making me cringe at the price. We ordered the number 5 combo, which included spicy tuna, spicy salmon and spicy avocado rolls. I couldn't taste the spiciness (chalk it up to a cold), but hubby said it was SPI-CY. We also had the plain udon, which came with california rolls. We planned to split the udon and the server was kind enough to bring us a second bowl and spoon. Next time I'm in the mood for sushi, we'll skip all the other places we've tried and head directly to Sea Ranch. read more

You get what you pay for: indeed, aside of a full price roll, the nigiris and the standard rolls are half the size of what one usually gets at japanese restaurant. They've got pretty good AYCE sushi but the choices are limited and the prices are higher than other AYCE places (albeit this location is closer to the NU campus). The service is also slow and it closes awfully early - that's probably actually the worst part. Once we went for AYCE and didn't even get to reorder much because they closed so early. read more

All you can eat Sushi!!! This place has such great sushi it is worth driving 25 minutes from downtown. I have been going to this establishment for 2 years. They have 2 places, one in Wilmette and one in Evanston, the one in Evanston is all you can eat. Both places are very good but if your just going for sushi head to Evanston they also have several kinds of fish from the refrigerator that can sliced into sashimi, of course it cost additional for the sashimi. All in all $19.99 for all you can sushi is a great deal!!! I also order the specialty rolls and the nigri. This is one of the freshest sashimi places in Chicago..worth the drive or take the Brown Line and walk 2 blocks. Sea Ranch serves consistently good sushi at reasonable prices. You order at the counter and pay, and your food is delivered to your table. I like the spicy tuna special which has nice sized chunks of tuna (not the chopped up stuff you sometimes see) with avocado, rolled in white rice with no seaweed. The tuna is always a vibrant red color and seems very fresh. My wife likes the sashimi and roll combinations. There is complimentary self serve barley tea and green tea. The ambiance is fine as long as you are not looking for something upscale. It is basic but comfortable seating in a mini-Japanese grocery setting. read more

Cheap Eat in the Northshore - It is a grocery store restaurant. My favorite is Ramen. It is also called Chuka-soba in Japan. I am from Japan and you can get authentic Japanese Ramen, Shio, Shoyu, or Miso with a sushi roll with very reasonable price. Check it out. It is a lot tastier and cheaper than Santoko at Mitsuwa less than $10. The broth is lighter fare. The head chef is from Japan. He fixes very authentic shari (Japanese sushi rice). First of all, I read the reviews of this place and was super pumped up. Sushi hot spot/grocery store? If it sold whiskey it could have become my one-stop shop. Alas, no whiskey. And calling it a grocery store is a bit of a misnomer - it has 3 shelves of assorted Asian dry goods. Literally three shelves, like the kind you would buy at CostCo for your garage. I did load up on soba noodles and sriracha sauce (whaa-caa taste buds!) while they were prepping my sushi though, which was cool. This is never a place I would take a client, or a first date (unless she was super cool and sushi-bona fide); however, this is hands down some of the freshest sushi I have had outside the Tsukiji Fish Market. Not too many outlandish rolls, just excellent, basic sushi. A few of the other reviewers uploaded great pictures of the simplistic excellence Sea Ranch specializes in. I work near Sea Ranch.. and it's definitely a good place to go for some japanese food. Their big thing seems to be sushi though. A couple of my coworkers and I went the other day. I got a salmon/avocado roll along with Inarizushi, and they both got some specialty roll, sadly I don't remember. Mine was pretty good-- but theirs, I tried them were kind of bland/taste like nothing-esque. Their fish was flavorless (at least no fishy flavor) and I think they got spicy, and there was no kick to the spicy mayo. I do love the tiny market options they have, japanese candy, tea, instant udon bowls, mochiko, etc. to buy. Also the staff are very friendly! read more

If you're coming here for ramen, you've come to the wrong place. I got the tonkotsu ramen and it doesn't even come close to some of the places downtown. First of all, the noodles are not curly. I just don't understand how something can be ramen and not have curly noodles. Not particularly chewy either. Ok yelpers, I needed a sushi fix after shopping all day in Evanston and was delighted with this little store front fish/sushi place. They offer brown rice! Yummy brown rice - almost dessert-like, imho. I ordered sushi to go and wish I had eaten it there because I'm sorry to report that the scallop offered in the deluxe combo was inedible - I thought I was going to vomit. Since it was the last piece I ate - and it's been over 4 hours I'm guessing it was a fluke. The rest of the offerings in the deluxe combo were delicious - As were the two pieces of saba (makeral) that I also ordered. I consumed the fish without the rice at home (trying to keep off carbs here for a few days) but wanted to try their brown rice. It was delicious and had a great 'tooth' appeal. I considered calling them to advise them about the scallop but when I had called earlier in the day to make sure they were open in the afternoon - I had difficulty at that point and couldn't imagine being able to communicate this information in a postive manner. read more

Totally satisfied my sushi craving! Sushi is my pick-me-up food and can instantly make a blah day so much better! I took a sushi combo to go and weirdly enough it came with some korean side dishes of seaweed and bean sprouts. There was also miso soup included. The only disappointment is that they didn't pack any soy sauce for me :( It's like having fries without ketchup.. frustrating! The fish was fresh, but two of the sashimi pieces were a little chewy. They also have a few shelves that have asian favorites-- everything from ramen to asian junk food to the best gum in the world (this 8 pack of fruity gumballs). I was here with a friend and ordered the unagi udon combo set. She ordered the shrimp tempura. As someone who recently came back from a trip to Japan, I can say that I thought their udon was pretty good. The unagi was smaller than I expected, and came on its own bed of rice, which I only a ate a few bites of, but it was flavorful and flaky. Not the freshest, but very affordable for eel. My friend's shrimp tempura was similarly good, but the side of sushi it came with was just imitation crab and avocado, wrapped in some very dry rice. read more

I visited Sea Ranch for the first time. I am really amazed at their food as well as their service. I ordered a bowl of Beef Udon soup, a scallop roll, and their famous sushi. The prices are fair, and the ingredients are quality, also the service is awesome. All of their staff here is helpful and friendly. You will absolutely enjoy the place and the ambiance inside. They have so many food displays for all the customers to easily pick and order. They have drinks, desserts, appetizers, and others. Such a place full of affordable and awesome foods. Their sushi is very consistent and tastier than the sushi of other places I have been visited before. All of their selection for sushi is mouth-watering, so delicious, and plated so well. You will absolutely love each of every sushi flavor they have. You can also buy anything here in such a fair price. No wonder why a lot of people keep coming back here and really keep loving this place. Sea Ranch is the fun shop to go for some Japanese groceries and stuff. This place is waiting for you! A wonderful no frills sushi place in Evanston. I love the casual eat-in/take-out layout that invites you to stay, but allows a quick in-and-out if that's what you're in for. The freshness of their fish is top-notch in my experience and prices are on the low end of what you'll find elsewhere in Evanston and just about anywhere on the north side of the city. I was really craving ramen on a chilly Chicago spring day and this was the closest place in proximity to me. My friend and I went and we both got different ramen dishes BUT I have definitely experienced better. When the food came out, I remembered why I hadn't come back in three years. I got the pork ramen: The noodles weren't really firm or chewy... Just kind of bland. There was also no pork in the ramen--which would have been fine if the broth had tasted like broth made from pork but the broth lacked the depth and the richness that comes from well made soups. Great little sushi place in Evanston. Found it by accident this past Sunday as my fave tapas place was closed until 5pm. Anyway, the sushi is very fresh. The service is very friendly and the prices are very reasonable. You can order off the menu and pay per roll or opt for a buffet (which limits your roll choices) for $22.99 I believe. Really enjoyed myself at the Sea Ranch this past Saturday. The sushi was probably the freshest I've had, and its priced right. The only issue (and it was possibly my own fault) is that I didn't realize this place was primarily a grocery store. My fiance and I met a friend here for dinner on Saturday night... I guess I was expecting that we would at least get someone to come to our table to take our order. Its not that kind of place though. You go up to the counter and you order. You go up and make your own tea, get your own condiments and what not. None of this is really a problem, but it does change the place from a great place to go for sushi on Saturday night to a great place to go to sushi for lunch or by yourself after work. And both types of places are necessities in life, so there is no issue! So, know what you are getting into and you will have a great time here. The salmon melted in my mouth. As Chris C. noted, this isn't a date night spot or some fancy shmancy sushi joint. Sea Ranch is primarily a grocery store. You can buy fresh fish, spices, and lots of yummy dessert items like Pocky and those little chocolate panda bears. It also happens to be a GREAT lunch spot or quick bite any time of day spot. The ramen is oh so fabulous. I was so impressed by the pork broth . . . so rich and tasty. This is not the ramen you ate in college (and possibly steal eat . . . shame on you)! The ramen came with some california rolls that seemed really fresh. While we were primarily going to Sea Ranch to try their ramen, next time I think it will be a sushi run. They have an all you can eat deal for 20 bucks that seems like the route to go. Everyone at your table has to order it, so bring some hungry friends! nom nom nom. read more

Sea Ranch reminds me of some of the mom and pop Japanese stores that used to exist in So. Cal. The sushi is very good quality. The udon is tasty. The interior is sparse. There are some evenings when the place gets very full, usually on their all-you-can-eat sushi evenings. The place gets packed out with Northwestern students. This is also a good place to get Japanese items like Poki, Botan rice candies, gyoza, mochi ice cream, and packaged ramen. I live close to this place, and I am glad that it is in the neighborhood. read more
