This place was great! We ordered entirely too much food after a day at the beach. The portions are generous on almost anything and rolls and bowls include soups. The service was so friendly. I think everyone working at the restaurant said hi to us. It was super fast. The garlic edamame was tasty. The sweet beef bowl was great and tasted even better after we went home and heated up some of our excessive leftovers. It has cute cat centric art all around. There were goods and bads here that led to me giving this spot a 3 stars. Food was hit/miss. Service was good. And ambiance was fine. We ordered the chef's sashimi bowl ($29), the chicken katsu ramen ($17), and the karage ($5.5). I think the sashimi is fresh and the portion is decent. Also, the sushi rice was delicious and it came with a miso soup. I enjoyed this dish and the soup. But, the chicken ramen fell short for me. They left the chicken karage drowning under all the broth, so it was very soggy by the time the waiter brought it out. And the cheese they put in looked like a kraft single. Very processed. Texture-wise, all of the panko-breaded skin was detached from the chicken and floating around with cheese clumps, and the chicken was rubbery and overcooked, which I did not enjoy. As for the noodles, they tasted and looked like boiled shin ramen noodles. The chicken karage was interesting. I expected bone-in chicken wings, but these were something like stuffed chicken nuggets. They were ok. All of the chicken meat was ground to a pulp and so it had no texture. It had some seasoning but not really a lot of flavor. The place was cute, and the decor was very unique and enjoyable. And our waiter was friendly. I just don't think the food justifies the price, and I'm not sure I would come back again. read more

This was my first time trying Takibi. I really enjoyed my food. I placed an order for pick up over the phone and it was very easy. I ordered the cucumber sunomono, crispy vegetable gyoza and a Philly roll (Philadelphia roll). The gentleman who took my order was kind and efficient and my order was packed nicely. I thought it was a cute place and will definitely consider visiting to dine-in in the future. I most enjoyed the gyoza, it had a really nice taste. The roll was solid as well. It was my first time ever trying cucumber sunomono so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but I was expecting more of a strong flavor. I would probably stick with the sushi and gyozo next time, but overall a great experience! read more

Stopped in for our third visit. (more on our second later). Came in on Thursday night and planned for 6 p.m. when street parking opens up for free directly in front of the resto past the bus stop. Nice and quiet and the chef/owner to ourselves along with to go orders. He's working solo now so he welcomes patrons outside the weekend and patience on busier nights. We got an amuse bouche of mussels with a hot sauce but not so much to overwhelm taste balance. Good temperature to avoid overcooking but not presenting something cold. Will present a little chew as expected since these are mussels and not small oysters. So we went with our favorites so far: crazy roll and futomaki, but also noticed that for both rolls - all neat six pieces, no messy end pieces. I'm guessing minimal cuts at the ends to avoid loss while gaining presentation. (no photos from our 2nd visit to compare). Tried the wawa ramen - bbq ham is leaner but doesn't present the lusciousness of the chashu even via thin slices. Plan to walk through all the ramens soon enough. We did experiment with the seaweed roll during our 2nd visit and I think we decided it was too simple and didn't leave us with a particular impression (or photo). read more

Such a delicious ramen meal! Best we've had in the neighborhood. I had the vegetarian ramen with spicy broth. The crunchy tofu and the egg were just wonderful. My spouse has the pork belly ramen with mild broth and reported that the meat was tender and high quality. Our 5 year old had a side of noodles and broth and ate every last drop. Overall experience was good. I went by myself with a six pack of beer. If you are solo make sure to sit facing the windows. The attentive watch of the owner tends to cause allot of unnecessary eye contact. I ordered Miso soup some pricy tempura from the app section and a Salmon roll to test the waters with. I kind of love Tabiki. It's a little store front with seven tables, a counter at the window and allows for both an intimate and crowd-buzz simultaneously. The atmosphere is art-loving and playful with a happening sushi prep station. The dishes have a decidedly creative touch without pretension. Some original rolls feature this playfulness, the chef's sushi choices are generous and topped with thoughtful taste accents. The noodle dishes are presented in ceramic simulacrum noodle cups that visually overflow, reminiscent of French onion soup but isn't. I visited Takibi on their second day of service, and I am looking forward to many future visits. I ordered the large sashimi, and the Lollipop "Out" Special Roll Tasty (fresh salmon, fresh tuna, scallion, yuzu ginger truffle). My arrival at the restaurant was warmly and graciously welcomed by both the hostess and the chef, and I immediately relaxed into the cozy yet spacious environment. While waiting for my to-go meal to be prepared, I realized that I would've equally enjoyed dining in-house; the ambiance was tranquil and peaceful, a notable contrast to the bustling energy of Sheridan Road. After hurrying home to try my food, I sampled a bit of everything. No more than three savored bites into my solitary smorgasbord? I immediately called the restaurant and offered immense gratitude for them having some of the freshest, highest-quality sashimi I've tried in the Chicagoland area. Additionally, I mentioned that the flavor combinations they presented were nuanced, yet deliberate. I also reiterated that they would see me again in the very near future. I initially made that statement prior to trying their food, as I had a feeling it would prove true; I was pleased that my hypothesis was correct. While it could be said that there are several restaurants offering similar types of Japanese cuisine in the Rogers Park area? It could also be said that they each provide a different representation of the same cuisine. What a great spot! Service is fantastic and the chef/owner has a really positive energy and attitude towards cooking - you can tell in the food. The music is very relaxing and very chill spot. We got the sashimi bowl and the nigiri platter and both were excellent! They make their own tamago here which is a telltale sign of a quality sushi spot (majority of sushi spots in Chicago just buy it). The top pieces were the unagi and the tamago. The rice was also fantastic and the the price was great too! I honestly thought compared to everything else in Chicago and the quality this place is a deal! Very good little sushi and ramen spot. Chill ambiance, reasonable prices, beautiful neon. They do a great job of the minimalist classic sushi and also have some fun rolls with all kinds of crazy sauces and stuff if that's more your speed. And a few other small plate type things. The menu says the ramen is in a Korean style; I don't know what that distinction means in practice, but I had a bowl that I really liked. They have good lunch special combinations in the $12-$16 range that I've gotten once or twice and found to be a good value. Takibi is BYOB; it's also next door to a bar that sells carryout six packs, and there is a full-service liquor store right across Sheridan. I really want it to succeed. I'm not a big review guy, but I'm worried that many in the neighborhood may not have caught on to this spot because it replaced another sushi restaurant in the same space that was not very good. I'm kind of a ramen head and it was rather cold so I gave this a shot. Solid broth, good toppings and ok pork. If you're feeling cold, this stuff warms the soul. Best ramen egg out there helps. The owners of this spot retired I believe and now new owners have taken over with some much needed fresh paint and revamped menu and I must say I love all the changes...The noodle/rice bowls are fantastic and my god this place has me eating mushrooms which I'm not a big fan of but here the mushrooms have a beautiful texture and taste and not rubbery. I need more people to visit this spot! Especially their dine-in space! I've eaten in and ordered takeout and couple times each. The food and service is always so consistent, thoughtful, and fresh. I can't speak to the ramen or bowl dishes (yet), but I love love love the maki, sashimi, nigiri, and tempura. Everything tastes fresh, made to order, assembled carefully, and often plated with a couple palate cleansers. Today, I tried their sashimi omakase. She had a ramen bowl with pork belly and I had a bowl with sashimi. Everything was fresh and tasty. Only a few other folks there and service was good. It's nothing fancy but all that you need when you need a fix. Saw someone else in another review suggested sitting and facing the street which is what we did as well. Takibi is everything a local sushi place should be. Friendly, clean, well-priced, quaint, excellent service. But they don't stop there. The quality of the food is top-notch. They carry your expected sushi restaurant items, but also interesting "chef-y" items like the Halloween special: smoked tuna tataki (that they smoke themselves!) with a pumpkin sauce (or maybe pumpkin seed, I didn't get it so don't remember). So creative. I started with the oyster tempura. Not your standard tempura batter, but more like crispy breading. And oh so crispy. Perfectly deep fried and not a drop of grease. Big, fat, plump oysters, what's not to love? Everything else was just as delicious. It's no-charge BYOB so it's easy on the wallet. I'll be back. read more

From the reviews, not sure if we just had an off night or what. The place is really cute! The presentation is fabulous, but the food was not good. We got the tempura & it wasn't panko, but seemed to be onion ring battered. It also came with a mayo sauce which we have never had before. My hubbie's ramen looked beautiful, but he said tasted like instant noodles. I love chirashi, but this was just weird. It was beautiful, but It was warm & tasted like they tried to marinate it to cover up that it was not fresh. it tasted quite fishy & not good. Since this is a Tuesday & they are closed Sun & Mon, it should have been quite fresh. But Again, everything LOOKED beautiful, but wasn't. After seeing all the great reviews, I even called to see if maybe they had a new kitchen help?? Not sure what happened with our meal. We both agreed, we probably won't be back. We had dinner here before seeing a show nearby. It's pretty low brow in terms of service / ambiance but the sushi was really fantastic! we had the Red Monster & pop cracker rolls. Really yummy! You have to be in the mood for BYOB, sometimes you really want a nice crafty martini shaken for you but in this case it was perfect for our group. One thing I will say is this restaurant bought fake reviews. I mean just read them. Maybe I came on a bad day but the sushi was gas station tier. Texture was soft/mushy and flavor was fishy (ammonia) masked by a strong citrus dressing. I kid you not every piece of sushi tasted like a fishy lemon gummy.
