Don't be fooled by the reviews!! I am all for supporting business and don't generally post bad reviews unless it's really bad. I really don't understand how this restaurant can get 4.6 stars google and 4.1 on yelp. Apparently, it has been open for 10+ years and only has 230 reviews here. Does that make sense to you? Either they have very little customers or are paying to get reviews removed. I came here and tried their ramen and Chirashi bowl. They used INSTANT RAMEN for their noodles and shredded chicken pieces that were super bland. The bowl was $16. I don't even know what more to say to that. I can make instant ramen better at home. When I order ramen I am expecting the Japanese ramen, and they call themselves "authentic" Japanese food? The Chirashi bowl was meh. Some fish slices were ok, others didn't taste fresh or were cured weirdly. They used weird toppings like marinated mushrooms. I came here with my friends and thought the food was pretty good. It was on the pricey side but pretty unique. There was a roll with mango on it, which I've never tried before. It was also a cozy spot. The one thing that annoyed me was that the waitress had her kid hanging around, and the kid had a cold and kept coughing in the open air, which is completely unhygienic in my opinion and unacceptable. If you have a sushi restaurant, you need to at least be masked so you don't spread illnesses to your customers. I'm pretty sure I got cold after coming here. read more

So it was Mother's Day and my son told me we could have dinner anywhere. I picked rolls and bowls, a neighborhood staple in Lincoln Square. Dining in for the first time in two years was a pleasure. They owner was so welcoming when we walked in. It's a laid back atmosphere where you can enjoy your dinner at your leisure, and what a delicious dinner! We started with California rolls, followed by shrimp and veggie tempura as appetizers (I should forward you the tempura was partially devoured before I remembered a picture!) Overall: A surprising, yet amazing, casual Asian dining experience. The good: The food here was incredible, even though it's not doing anything out of the ordinary. I had a chicken teriyaki bowl and my girlfriend had the chicken udon, but both were flavor-packed and fulfilling. The teriyaki sauce was laid on thick to perfectly grilled chicken, and the udon broth was phenomenal along with the noodles within. And, it seems small, but the miso soup paired with the rice bowl was phenomenal. It shouldn't go without mention that our server was friendly and attentive as well. Going on 1hr and 45mins...edit: 2hrs now and going edit: 2hrs and 15 mins for delivery and it's still not here...going to put in a call and see what they have to say. At this point it's pretty inexcusable. We only live half a mile away. For the prices they charge plus tax and tip it shouldn't take this long. Awful, awful, awful, and disgusting. I can't get over how bad every single thing I ordered was. Tempura tasted like it was fried the week before, frozen then refried. Gomae texture and taste was diarrhea. Crab ragoon was ok, but straight cream cheese. Ramen was the worst part. Noodles were so overcooked and cold, I couldn't pick them up with chopsticks, they were mush the second they entered my mouth. The broth smelled old and was unappealing in every aspect; taste, smell, appearance. That smell I can't get out of my head, it reminded me of the smell you get when you enter an old diner that's probably never been cleaned since it opened. A mixture of sewage, centuries oil/grease that builds up over stove tops and wet dog. The smell stuck around too, it was a silent but deadly type deal where it just lingers and sticks to the walls. I thought that I was overreacting due to being pregnant, but my husband confirmed all of my concerns. He can eat anything, he grew up with parents who couldn't cook so he was used to bad food and even he couldn't eat this garbage which really says a lot. The food we got was truly appalling and offensive and days later I'm still upset about it. I started searching for new sushi places in Lincoln Square with Sushi Tokoro being temporarily closed for a long time and Rolls N Bowls is now my new favorite sushi place in Lincoln Square. I've ordered carryout two times here and I found the sushi to be great! Prices are competitive and the portion sizes are big, which make it a good bang for your buck unlike Miku Sushi down the street. The sushi is better quality than Sushi Tokoro, but Sushi Tokoro is still the best AYCE sushi joints I've had in the city. I'm a big fan of the nigiri plate, which I found to be very fresh and very filling. All of their rolls are super creative especially the Love Roll! My favorite rolls so far are the Love Roll and the Mexican Roll. The Mexican Roll was actually pretty spicy and I love spicy food. My second order from them was about 40 minutes late as the employees opened late, but they gave me free miso soup for the inconvenience. I haven't dined in as they are carryout only during the pandemic, but the place is BYOB and it looks super small. They probably only have about 6 tables and can maybe seat about 20 people. Service has been solid even with the long wait time and I look to order more sushi from them in the future. read more

Downloaded yelp just to review this business. It was incredible. We ordered the Bulgogi (amazing), Miso soup, Spicy Ramen, and Arizona roll. The roll was so good we impulsively ordered a second. This is a family owned business and they were so kind and fun to talk to. Even though it was our first time, it felt like we were regulars. They told us that all of their sauces are homemade (except the soy sauce) and that they make them with allergens in mind so as to keep it as inclusive as possible. How misleading! :( I did not get to have my ramen that night. They had some ramen items on the menu, but apparently one of them was just shin ramyun based on reviews? I couldn't risk trying the other ones. We had a decent meal anyhow though. I was excited about getting sushi, and they looked great! But my fish were fibrous and couldn't be chewed?! I've literally never had fish like that before. Like it was hard to chew them apart and swallow, which is the opposite of what I expected... Based on that I wouldn't considering coming here for sushi again. I did like the yakisoba and bf enjoyed his tempura udon. They were both pretty decent sized portions and very tasty. Silly me always thought yakisoba would taste just like chinese lo mein and would never measure up to my mom's, but the sauce is sweet/tangy/savory but not overwhelming... very interesting. I'll be getting it more often from now on at places I think! The staff was very nice. The decor is really cozy, and the place is pretty small, which makes the place very comforting. We have lived in the neighborhood for a few years now, but have never tried this place. Tried it tonight and was beyond disappointed. Literally waited 30 min to get our volcano roll. When it came it had a soy-based sauce drizzled on top. It said NOTHING about this on the menu. I was upset because I have a soy allergy (which is usually fine at a sushi restaurant - I just tell them I am allergic and they leave soy off of anything that might have it on there), and I had told the waitress when we got our table that I had this allergy. SO we waited 30 min for a $17 roll that I can't eat because of an allergy I told our server about. I was upset, too, because we were one of only 3 tables in there, and our waitress was just hanging out up front most of the time, so it's not like she was "too busy" and forgot about my soy allergy. Anyways, by the time we got our role my kids were already done with their dinner AND dessert (yes, that's how long we waited), and my husband was hungry (plus it was his bday dinner!), so instead of sending the roll back and waiting 30 min for another one, my husband just ate it and then we paid our bill and left. I never jump quickly to write a bad review but today's lunch forced me to it - Spicy Beef Udon Soup .... what a mistake this watery substance was. Meat that I could not even chew and a watered down taste of the $.99 store purchased Chinese instant hot soup. Had to send it back and they still tried to charge me for the soup I couldn't eat because it was so bad. I asked to see the manager in order for it to be removed from my bill and the owner stated : "if it's not salty enough for you start cooking at home" and when I refused to pay Police was called. My jaw completely dropped when she accused me of being a racist trying to take an advantage of her just because she is Asian ! Unreal mind blowing experience. No wonder this place is empty. Left a $20 bill and walked out. Never again. If you like tasteless food and rude management that calls you names this is a place for you ! It was my cousin's birthday the other night and we wanted to go somewhere good. You know, live it up a little - try something new. So what's the first thing we do? Go on Yelp and Rolls n Bowls came up in our queue. We decided to go with it because it has pretty good reviews on yelp, yielding roughly 4/5 stars, and we are always down for sushi. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and seated. I told the server, Gino, that it was my cousin's birthday and if he could do something for us (even though he told me they normally don't do anything). So then we proceeded to order and he was extremely considerate and attentive. When asked for recommendations, he provided us with real options tailored to our preference. It wasn't one of those generic "what are you in the mood for today" questions that lead you nowhere. After all of his recommendations and us scavenging through the menu, we decided to go with rolls and bowls and plates. For rolls, we ordered the Godzilla, caterpillar, dragon, and spicy emergency roll. We also ordered bulgogi beef plate, chicken and beef teriyaki plate, and garlic pork bowl. While the food was cooking, we got complimentary miso soup and we ordered appetizers: crab Rangoon and soft shell crab. Shortly after, the food came out and it was phenomenal. I was so impressed by the presentation, the flavors, and the serving size. Just simply amazing! And guess what? Gino brought out deep fried ice cream for the birthday girl. It was on the house too. Word of warning: the only thing hotter than the Emergency maki at Rolls N Bowls is the scalding hot water that shoots out of the restroom sink with no warmup whatsoever. Wash your hands at your own risk. With other more outstanding choices closer to home, I probably wouldn't come back to Rolls N Bowls, but it was fine. Not great or terrible, just mediocre. That Emergency roll was fairly tasty, though nearly lethal. The calamari, however, is utterly flavorless. Just a little salt and pepper in the batter would make some difference. I did enjoy my shrimp yakisoba--some nice vegetables and a sweetish, gingery sauce. But with bare-bones interior and service and hit-or-miss food, there is nothing to entice me to return. read more

Long overdue to give my personal review of this super friendly Japanese restaurant that specializes in sushi rolls, Japanese appetizers and ramen. This was my third visit here within the year and it's always nice and quiet every time I come here so I get the best service from Tracy each and every time. The salmon and tuna rolls are a great value and absolutely clean and fresh tasting. I tried a bowl of ramen which appears to come out in a rather smaller bowl but it's definitely generous in portion and incredibly affordable compared to the other ramen shops I've visited in the city of Chicago. So 18 hours after I posted my initial review I was contacted by an owner asking if they can be of any assistance in coming back for a second go; contacted via Yelp. Read my first review to know what I am referring to. They wanted me to try them out again and leave with a nice taste in my mouth. Now some time later I feel propelled to write since I've received a second message from a different manager asking if they can get me to revisit the restaurant. That's cool. I like that they are on top of their social media. If you look at their reviews you can investigate a little and see that the owners / management make contact with those that have reviewed whether it be good or bad. Due to my schedule as of late, I haven't yet had the time to take a second go at it. In its place I'm bumping my initial review up a star. KUDOS to management. Pretty good sushi here! This place was recommended by friends that were rolling up here after the Yelp Event in Pilsen. They called in for a reservation for 6 because the place is too small. We made it there and not only was it small, it was tiny as hell! When i say tiny, I mean a 90 pound girl having to squeeze past tables tiny. I think only 12-15 people can fit inside. They make up for its small stature with their good sushi and reasonable prices. We had two spicy tuna rolls, a spicy salmon roll, a piece of maguro and a piece of unagi which came out to $17.00. The spicy tuna was good and mad spicy. The service was great as there was a new guy waiting on us and he made sure he checked on us and showed us his great humor. If you are ever in the area and would like to get some great sushi without hurting your wallet, stop in this joint, but u may wanna call first. read more

Let me tell you, my fears were put to rest once I ate here! The sushi was fresh and the portions were beyond plentiful! In addition, the staff while dining in was attentive and hospitable.
