Very friendly service and great food at reasonable prices. Were very attentive to our needs and made it a pleasure to visit. It was our 52nd wedding anniversary and they surprised us with a nice desert. The other nice feature is BYOB so we could celebrate with a little proseco and not blow the budget.

This spot is so yummy! The menu is eclectic. We had the mussels for an appetizer and a BLT sushi roll that tasted like a Cobb salad. It was different but fresh, highly recommend!

Both my friend and I had Tanoshii bookmarked for a while, so we decided to try it for dinner after shopping in the area. The decor is cozy and it feels very similar to local neighborhood sushi restaurants I would go to growing up. We got two signature rolls - the salmon truffle honey and the shiitake one, as well as some sashimi pieces. The signature rolls were yummy but we felt both the truffle honey and the shiitake mushroom were the stars of the rolls and that these rolls were tailored maybe more for folks who aren't as focused on the raw fish aspect. I thought they were good but I wouldn't order again. Also, we tried the fish and chips and while the raw fish is a generous helping and well seasoned, the chips were stale and just in general not a great vessel for the raw fish. Def would not get again. For sashimi, we got the scallop and some others and I would say scallop was standout. Overall, I would say this is a good place for their regular sushi rolls (better prices) and a neighborhood sushi spot, but I felt the signature rolls were a bit expensive for what they were and I wouldn't come back here anytime soon / go out of my way to go here if I was someone else.

    V-Maki Combo

Came to yet another Asian place in Andersonville. It certainly has quite a few, but this may be the best one. Tanoshii is best known for the great sushi. Basically it's a Japanese restaurant with a full menu, but really the sushi is what people come to get. Prices are pretty good for the portions and quality. Before going we already knew we were getting some of the sushi, and we got to the seats in front of the sushi bar. It's the best seats in the house. There you can see your rolls get made. Cool idea. Everyone talks about how good Chef Mike is, and that's because he's good: he makes some good ass sushi. As for what we got, it was the V-Maki Combi. It's $12 for miso soup and three vegetarian maki rolls. Choose which ones. I got the avocado, cucumber, and oshinko rolls. Good price. There was a lot of food for this. Even though it's best known for sushi, there's other stuff on the menu such as their own version of fish and chips. It's best known for the sushi though. The combos are a good value, and there's lots of options for the fish eaters as well as vegans and vegetarians.

We stopped by this place while walking Andersonville and tried their omakase which was amazing! The sushi was fresh and taste was combination of ingredients was refreshing. We got 4 dishes by chef Eddie who customized our dishes to our taste and suggestions. We were able to get seated without a reservation fast but recommended reservations during busy hours. The ambiance was lively and all service was kind! Recommend for a date night!

We arrived here about 30 minutes before they were closing with no reservation. They made us wait for a couple minutes. I think she was trying to get the ok to seat us this late in the night. She came back and walked us to our table. We started off with their Gyoza. Pan fried vegetable dumplings that were delicious. These were thinner than what I'm used to but still packed with flavor. We only ordered two rolls for our late night dinner. They're Dragon Roll and their Andersonville Roll. I wanted something with cream cheese and the Andersonville Roll was the only one. It also came with avocado, shrimp tempura, kanikama, unagi and cucumber. The Dragon Roll came with pretty much the same things, except for cream cheese. Both rolls were good as well as the service. I'll definitely be returning.

Given the price point, I wanted to give this a better review. I did enjoy the food, however, the service missed the mark for me. Although the fish was undoubtably fresh and tender, the sauces in the omakase perhaps covered up the flavor. The truffle oil and honey were still an interesting take which I enjoyed. The restaurant was deserted and the hostess seated me at the bar. The chef approached me and crossed his arms, speculating that I probably haven't had good sushi before and that I do not know how to appreciate fine dining. A confused chuckle later, I paid the bill and tried to tiptoe out without drawing any further attention. I would like to try more of the menu, but perhaps that will be a delivery operation.

What a lovey and intimate sushi spot! If you can, definitely sit at the counter to soak in the snug and cozy vibe. The food was delightful. We started with the fish & chips appetizer--a playful dish where the server mixed fish and served it on a chip (resembling a tiny pizza). The seared tuna salad was refreshing with a subtle smokiness. Among the rolls, we particularly enjoyed the toro truffle and the shiitake roll. We chose the omakase style and let the chef select our dishes. Just note that the bill is itemized, so you pay for each item rather than a fixed price.

    Chicago Restaurant Week Menu
    Nhilven John D.

Tried the 2024 Chicago Restaurant Week menu with my best friend. Did a reservation for 515 pm online. We started with the Lychee and Elderflower martinis while we waited for our food. Started with the fish and chips for our First Bite, which came with spicy tuna, pico de gallo, avocado, tobiko, lemon juice; served on a flour tortilla chip. This was a really starter to the entire menu. Our Second Bite came with Ponzu Sashimi and the Bluefin Truffle Sashimi. I preferred the latter but both were really amazing Our Third Bite included the nigiri flight. This came with the following: hamachi + negi | sake + yuzu koshö | maguro + kizami wasabi. All were really good and couldnt put any of them above the other. Our main Special Rolls for the Fourth bite came with the following: - Hamachi, avocado, soy-wasabi sauce, jalapeno - Maguro, avocado, spicy tuna, tempura, baked Japanese chili aioli - Sake, avocado, truffle honey & gochujang sauce - Escolar, avocado, shiitake mushrooms, chive sauce These were incredible. They told us to start with the Hamachi but then anything else after that. I say that was good advice. Ended with the strawberry and mango mochis for dessert. Overall, it was a wonderful experience for Chicago Restaurant Week. The service was great and the menu was pretty good for the price. The ambience could be good for somwthing casual, but can be good for dates and an intimate group. Would definitely like to come back and the full menu.

Everything is also very clean! The service is friendly, kind, and attentive. With four sushi chefs working their magic at the sushi bar, the food came out at reasonable speed. Especially with how fresh everything was and how much work some specialty rolls take. The menu is simple and approachable. They have more adventurous options for those like me; and simpler ones for those who just enjoy a simple Spicy Tuna roll. Miso soup = I wish I could convey the smell! A little heavy on the salt, yet very heavy on the flavor with a boatload of umami and a just the right amount of sour. I soon happily abandoned the spoon, grabbed the bowl, and happily gulped down whatever was left! Ahh... something I'd gladly order again, especially as the Chicago winter comes around the corner! Wasabi Tail = one of the more interesting rolls I've had. The fish was plentiful, high quality and made its mark. The veggie accompaniments were great at adding a little freshness, and the vinaigrette added some delectable sweetness and acid. The bacon was subtle, but just slightly there (and didn't hurt anything, for sure!). Seared Salmon Belly Sashimi = an excellent piece of fish, seared perfectly to not burn, and with a very subtle sauce. Perfect! Eel Nigiri = Wow! Just wow! Some of the best eel I've ever had! Fresh, superb quality, not over-sauced, not not microwaved like so many places do! Automatically ordered two more! Salmon Tataki = I wasn't sure if I'd like this one because I am not big into crab. However, my mind is blown three times over! The seared salmon was delightful, and I LOVED that the spicy tuna had a respectable heat! There was just enough cucumber for a little crunch and freshness. Finally, just a perfect amount of sweetness from the sweet soy. As for the crab... I ended up really liking it! Where has Ora been all my life!l?! Finally, one little criticism: while the rice is amazing and fresh, it didn't quite stick together, making the pieces exceptionally delicate. When I tell my friends about my Yelping and rating, many think Yelp allows half stars. Alas, it does not. Though if it did, a lot of those places I awarded five would really get 4.5. However, Ora is one of those rare places that is a five through and through!

We ordered more than $80 worth of food, including two sets of three different sushi rolls each And three appetizers. Halfway through, we threw all of it in the trash. Everything was so over salted, our tongues were burning. Incredibly salty sushi rice, incredibly salty sauces in the various rolls, salty fried appetizers. Not normal salty, but weird, very offputting salty. Each piece of sushi roll we ate was like eating a salt lick, and they also kept falling apart. Whoever made the rolls has no idea what they're doing. I don't know if the folks who like Blowfish just have very low expectations, or if the place had a weird, off night. But after spending more than 80 bucks for such disgusting sushi, we will never re-order to find out. The sushi at Nori Sushi is so, so much better, and worth the similar prices that they charge.
