I went here per all the rants and raves on yelp. And okay the sushi was very fresh and the beef udon had an authentic flavor. Why only three stars you ask? The service! The waitress/cashier told us that it would take 45 minutes for our order (supreme sushi and beef udon set) which we were fine with since she explained that they were short staffed. The problem began when we sat down for our meal. She brought us 2 ramen and 2 california rolls. Umm.... I actually went up to her to show her the receipt so we can get what we paid for. The 2 ramen was for the table behind us and then she came back later to ask if we touched it. No, we actually know what we ordered! I swear she must be on something. I like Sea Ranch. AYCE sushi quality is a bit better than Todoroki's imo, though it's been a while since I've gone for that and I heard they upped the prices again or something. Recently I just don't think I can get the same value I used to. I really like stopping by for a quick meal of noodle soup though. Their combos end up being almost $10 with 5% NU student discount and tax, but it's very filling and comforting. No meat in the ramen combos though :/ and they just come with a california roll. The soup is likely some sort of powder/mix flavor that I've found at the bottom of my bowl before, but the noodle isn't the dried fried kind and has a good texture. Sometimes worth the value of a comforting meal, other times... meh. The unagi rice + udon is nice too, 3ish pieces of udon and a half serving of noodles. I like coming here for a very quick, casual meal, and maybe shop around. There's a very limited selection of snacks (2 shelves) and a small freezer of ice cream at a noticeable upcharge, but if you can't travel far this is a good place to get a fix of mochi ice cream, or yanyans or koalas and shrimp crackers and whatevers. There's also a selection of fish (and other premade foods) near the fridge - looks pretty fresh though I've never bought any. What else what else. Oh! Bad for groups - learned that the hard way. This place is just okay. Honestly if you're gonna buy anything from here, go with the sushi. I personally was not a fan of the udon dish, I got the beef one. The broth was just funky and I wouldn't get that again. However, the sushi is delicious. I ordered the spicy tuna, spicy eel, and a California roll which came with the udon dish. The fish here is like any other Chicago land restaurant that uses frozen thawed out fish. The quality is very mediocre. The AYCE (all you can eat) has a very limited menu and for $26.99 (price change starting in Oct. 2014) per person, it's really not worth the deal. Every roll I had was a bit salty, must have been from the crunch. My favorite sushi is sake (salmon) but theirs was super fishy. I would like to say you get what you payed for, but in this case.. I'm sorry but I'd rather buy $27 worth of sushi someplace else & eat less, pay more but at least enjoy great quality sushi. Beware if you go for the AYCE, they make you pay for whatever wasn't eaten when you'll be pretty much full as hell after one roll. They don't over stuff the sushi with rice but for some odd reason something about the food makes you get fuller quicker than usual. The interior is cozy, and while wait times can be long during the lunch rush I usually don't mind since they're very timely with online orders. Parking can be kind of a pain. When you step into the restaurant, you can smell the light vinegar in the air, which some people may don't like it, but to me, it's the smell of authentic Japanese sushi restaurant. The place is kinda small, but very clean and well organized. The sushi bar is like an open kitchen where you can see the sushi chefs making their rolls. On the other side, there is a small cooler where you can choose different types of seafood that are nicely packaged, and ask the sushi chef to cut it into sashimi for you. You can also order sushi set, udon, chishari bowl from the menu, but there are not many options to choose from. The fish was fresh and juicy, the price is reasonable, the udon taste actually really great and flavorful! I believe if they expand the menu, and maybe add more seatings and decorations, they will attract more customers! The host was really nice and polite! I've been here a few times and this time I tried the All you can eat. Definitely got my monies worth. $25.00 plus tax. Great service and Sushi was amazing. Restaurant is part mini japanese market but good atmosphere. With the all you can eat, you can get edamame, miso soup, or 1/2 bowl of noodles, on to of all the sushi. Have to pay extra for leftover but I ate all my food. Highly recommend the place. read more

Best sushi in Evanston, but is that really saying much? I hail from the west coast where fresh fish is a god-given right, so I've been spoiled all my life (especially with my being Japanese). With that said, I realize Evanston isn't a 'seafood town', so I take that into consideration. The ambiance: Half convenient store (with mainly Japanese products) and half sit-down sushi bar/restaurant. It's tiny, a bit cozy and intimate, and it's nice. It's a utilitarian setup since they've been able to accommodate a lot of seating in a very small amount of space. The food: I've only had the all-you-can-eat (AYCE) for $2X, which wasn't bad. You can order any of their special rolls, which at $10-14 each, you can recoup your AYCE price with a couple orders. I'm not much of a special roll-eater (I'm mainly here for the fish and sushi rice, not so much the fixins and dressings), but they're tasty. You can also order soup and appetizers in the AYCE. I ordered all the Spicy special rolls they had--I think it was the Spicy Chicago that I liked the most. It's been 2 months since I was there, so I might be wrong. The service: Nice and friendly. I've basically tried all the all you can eat sushis in Evanston, and this one is definitely the best in quality. It's a bit pricier with AYCE at 26.99 starting October. However, in my opinion it is much more worth the money to get that than order a specialty sushi a la carte. I always love getting the spicy tornado and dragon rolls here. The spicy tornado roll is unique to other places i've been to with cooked salmon on top and smoky crunches, crab, and avocado inside. If you eat raw fish, ordering the nigiri would be your best bet. In my experiences, the fish has always been fresh! You can also get half orders of udon, ramen, and buckwheat noodles. Everything here is pretty great. Other hits are salmon skin rolls and sweet potato rolls. Aside from the food, the place is a market as well and has just a few seats for people who want to dine in. I wouldn't come here for the atmosphere but you should except enjoy the best sushi in Evanston! read more

Horrible. We ordered over 120 dollars worth of sushi for delivery. They said it would take 2 hours to arrive. That was okay and we still decided to order. an entire three and a half hours later, WE have to call and ask what's taking so long. We were told the sushi was on its way. The sushi finally arrives and it very sub-par and not fresh at all. The temperature of it was luke-warm and the rice was mushy as if it had been sitting in a warm car for hours. Definitely not worth the price or the wait. We call and express our dismay to the manager, and they promise to give us a discount. After 4 days, they finally give a discount off our order. The "discount" was 5 dollars off. Of an order over 120 dollars. Pathetic. I also forgot to include that the sushi was not labeled and randomly placed in throughout the containers. It was almost impossible to differentiate whose order was whose. Terrible service. If you actually want quality sushi in Evanston, PLEASE go to Kuni. Much better than anything this place serves. Sea Ranch was the first restaurant I ate at in Evanston, and over the past three years it's food has stayed consistently fresh and delicious. The place is a half restaurant half Asian grocery store which has items that are a bit pricy, but convenient to pick up. Their noodles are not super flavorful and their ramen doesn't come with meat, but they are a nice option when you're looking for something light and not too oily. Their sushi/sashimi also always tastes really fresh. While it's a bit of a walk from campus and not the cheapest option in Evanston, definitely give Sea Ranch a try! read more

Sometimes, I get hungry, and then I lose my words. Sometimes my wife is craving something, and she doesn't know what it is. We like many restaurants in Evanston, but whenever we're in doubt about what to eat, or it's rainy, or too hard for us to make a decision, we go to Sea Ranch. You walk in, past the displays of pocky, seaweed, teas, and go straight to the front to make an order. Sometimes I get the sushi supreme, but lately I've been getting an Kaisen Set, which features a variety of roes, slices of raw scallop, and uni on top of rice, with a small ball of udon noodle soup. My wife's been on a tempura udon set kick lately, but usually gets the vegetarian option which is a large platter of sliced vegetarian rolls. Meat is typically a meal requirement for me, but the mushroom rolls are pretty good, and there's a lot, so if she gets this, I know I can get a smaller entree. I have a pretty big appetite, but I don't think I've ever left Sea Ranch hungry (even when my wife snags a couple pieces of scallop and uni), or at least not more hungry than can be solved by going across the street for gelato. We've never been there when it's empty, but we've also never had to wait for one of the tables. The tables are close together, which makes them good for eavesdropping, people-watching, and even occasionally joining in other conversations. The food is reasonably priced, fresh, tasty, and fast-- you order at the front, you sit down, and the food is usually brought to you in less than 15 minutes. Sea Ranch attracts a wide demographic, and people generally seem pretty happy to be there. Except that one woman, who complained because her udon set didn't come with a "real" spoon; I don't think she really gets it: Sea Ranch is a pretty much a no frills establishment, though I think it's nice that they bring you the food, rather than calling you back to the front to get it. Also, there is one undeniable frill, which is a major factor that keeps us coming back: free, hot barley tea. It's serve yourself, and I'll typically help myself to several cups. It's not haute cuisine, innovative, or trendy. There's no fancy cocktails or craft beers. The chopsticks are wooden, and many of the tables are wobbly, but we always leave satisfied, and we probably come 1-2 times a month: that level of consistency is pretty near priceless in my estimation. read more

so many reasons to like sea ranch! 1. the closest place to go for buying legit asian snacks / pantry items (this is really what won me over) 2. super friendly staff - at the register, behind the sushi counter, and the nice older lady who brings out our ordered food (who I think might also be the owner?) 3. decent japanese food that you can order as takeout or eat inside in a food court style seating area as for the food itself, we ordered the rainbow roll, a bowl of udon and the chirashi bowl. while the food did not wow me, i do think the rainbow roll and udon were pretty good considering we're in evanston. however i was pretty disappointed by the chirashi bowl - just in terms of the quantity (or lack thereof) and variety (or lack thereof) of sashimi in the bowl. quantity i can overlook given the lower price point, but there's no reason to order a chirashi bowl if you're only going to get 4 different types of fish (and only one somewhat small piece of each). so i would caution against getting the chirashi bowl. but everything else seemed fine and overall, sea ranch is a decent and quick place to stop for a bite to eat. bonus: free hot barley tea is a great add-on to your meal during these cold winter days. read more

I've had sushi twice from Sea Ranch and both times the sushi was good. Not the best I've had, but still decent sushi. Would recommend to those in the Evanston area. Their delivery service seems to be hit and miss as others have pointed out: my first order was on time but my second was over an hour late. Yes the sushi is good but DO NOT ORDER FOR DELIVERY!!!!! There are plenty of other sushi restaurants that are run professionally. I received a delivery estimate of 60 minutes and when I called 90 minutes later, I was placed on hold for five minutes only to learn they cannot give an updated delivery time. Almost every time the delivery is 2+ hours and tonight 2.5 hours and they are still "looking" for a delivery driver.
