I'm old enough to remember when airport food was crazy expensive and still terrible. Been here a handful of times and the food and service compares favorably to off airport restaurants.

Popped by before a flight recently and had a bite with my family. Tried chicken and waffles & a cocktail. The tequila based drink was strong and unique as it had passion fruit puree. The chicken was really tender but the mini waffles were very hard. The waffles had nice spice in the batter but I wish they'd been more soft. Service team was kind and easy to speak to. Would visit again before a flight!

Good food, good service, and a comfortable ambiance is how I can describe Screen Door at PDX. I was leaving out of Terminal C and Screen Door is located in Terminal B. I thought it was going to be a long walk across, but it was about a 7 minute walk. Before flight, we ordered Biscuits and Gravy, and the Breakfast Sandwich with potatoes. The Biscuits and Gravy was delicious. Biscuits were moist and the gravy was flavorful. The eggs were scrambled perfectly. The Breakfast Sandwich was also delicious. Made with a fried egg and homemade sausage patty on a brioche bun. The perfect meals before takeoff. I'm so happy they opened up inside of PDX. Now I have a reason to get to the airport 2 hours early!

I found myself suddenly at loose ends with a flight cancelled and awaiting the flight onto which I'd been rescheduled -- and it was lunch time! (ish) Being before midday, the menu was biased towards breakfast. I however was in the mood for lunch. After contemplation, I settled on the fried catfish and fries. The coleslaw side was not going it for me, so I subbed the grits and cheese. My server was beyond delightful. She offered very helpful suggestions on my beverage, and we discussed how difficult it was to make fried catfish. When my meal arrived, I was not disappointed at all . It was exceptional. I grew up in Texas and much of my home cuisine was heavily influenced by the South, and catfish was usually what was served if there was fried fish. This did not disappoint. The catfish was light and flaky, very moist. The corn meal breading was thin and tasty, and the house-made tartar sauce was just the perfect complement. The fries were extra crispy and fresh from the fryer, a delightful combination. And the cheese grits were heavenly - creamy and rich. I savored them throughout the meal. Having eaten frequently at the other two locations, the ambience here was similar to the Pearl location, but in an airport. Very open, very airy, open to the Concourse on two side sides. I am most frequently at the other end of the airport, but anytime I am on the B/C and, and have time for a meal? I will definitely be back!

I used to live in Portland, I lived 2 blocks from the original Screen Door. You usually had to wait 1.5-3 hrs to get chicken and waffle. The fact that you can get it in a few minutes, at PDX? I love nostalgia but you know what? Sometimes I luv the futurrrreeee!

So excited to have screen door pdx open a store in the airport! I love their original location and many times I have time to kill before going to my terminal as im chronically early to My flight. If you have time you won't regret stopping at this delicious Portland classic!

The first of the PDX renovations, Screen Door may be off to the side of the major overhaul, but it is still the crown jewel. No one told these guys that airport food is supposed to be a veiled shell of the original venue. Instead they brought exceptional into a very unexceptional environment. PDX is now not only an alternative to Seattle - but due to this spot, a preference for a lunch layover. They have held this since they started. A few notes for management on my last visit: get real menus. This is the entry point for imagining what to get next time, and the shallow digital menu would have been discarded in the early 2000s. Second, the fries were very "standard" compared to my last several visits. Don't succumb to airport mediocre - you are a brand ambassador at its finest.

Walked through three terminals to get to this southern soul satellite, and Screen Door did not disappoint. The catfish sandwich was savory, crispy and tender and I was able to sub cheesy grits instead of the standard fries. My server was prompt and friendly. The location, though far from my gate, was clean and well appointed. Hit the spot! The Porch Swing cocktail was delicious as well!

We arrived thirty minutes before closing, which was apparently the exact wrong time to expect a restaurant to be a restaurant. The place was chaos. Counters littered with plates and napkins, people waiting with the expressionless stare of the truly defeated. After locating a few stray seats at the counter like a survivor picking through rubble, we waited ten minutes. No one approached. I asked the server if we should order at the counter or if she'd come to us. She said she'd come over. She never did. Instead, she began a loud one-woman play about the horrors of her job. She hated everything. The shift. The place. The people. All of it. We all heard it. She then made the bravest move I've seen in food service. She simply walked out. Not in a hurry. Just down the escalator and gone. Did she quit? Was it a performance piece? Was she ever real at all? We'll never know. We left without eating. Wasted twenty minutes of our precious, overpriced airport time. Do not go here unless you are writing a novel about despair.

Calm breakfast spot in the airport with very high quality breakfast items. The Breakfast Sandwich was so fresh. Sausage was juicy, buns were toasty, and the hashbrowns super crispy. You can tell it's made with attention. The side salad and lemon vinegarette were a refreshing accompany to the decadent and filling sandwich.

Only doing 4 stars, as there is room to improve here, but, Alex is wonderful--such a friendly and funny human, and if you need help with the menu or just a second mimosa--he's got you! And also, thank you for the music swap, you know what you're doing. Came in for breakfast before my flight, and decided to make it a little second home for a while. The grits are the move here, cheesy doesn't describe--perfection. Sausage could use some work, and the eggs, but it's the airport, so not making a federal case about it, nice to see more local favorites grace PDX for a taste of home coming or going (though not NW cuisine). The person working the bar, sorry I forgot to jot down a name, brown hair, very attentive and on top of the whole operation (seemed like in-charge) thank you as well! Skip the more obvious places and just come straight here!

This place is seriously legit. It is the best of southern cooking in the PNW! The food is incredible, service excellent, and the old building is very cool and unique! Highly recommended! You HAVE to try the praline bacon!

Didn't get a chance to make it to their location downtown so I was happy to see them here at the airport. Honestly it was some of the best airport food I have had in a while. The fried chicken and waffle was great. The chicken was well seasoned and nicely crispy without being too much. I also got a side of grits that tasted just like home! Only downside was coleslaw didn't have a ton of flavor. Otherwise, the service was polite and timely. This is a good stop if you're flying out of PDX.

Immaculate atmosphere and the exact sort of thing we were looking for for breakfast. We didn't get her name but saw on the receipt her name might have been Davi, she was such a bundle of light and life, so attentive and kind! She immediately gave us wonderful recommendations which we all adored. The table ordered praline bacon to share (do yourself a favor and get this), one ordered the praline bacon waffle, another ordered the bananas foster waffle, and I got the seasonal vegetable hash. We were all in HEAVEN with what we ordered. From the first bite to the last it we were all absolutely stunned by how delicious and well made everything was. I savored every bite as did my compatriots. One gal ordered a couple things to go for her family (huevos rancheros for the hubby and cinnamon rolls for her kiddos) and our waitress Davi recommended they bring out the cinnamon rolls unfired so that she could pop them in the oven when she got home after a short drive. It was such good attention to detail that felt like such a friendly offer. Absolute superstars, the lot of you. Next time I'm back in Portland I'm absolutely spoiling some friends here with what I can only describe as a transcendent experience.

He told me that they would clean off a table for me. WOO HOO. I bursted out crying at the thought that I finally got my seat. As I sat down a soft chair graced my bottom. Beautiful. However, now that I've been a few times, I notice little details like "why do the hostesses continue to seat people right next to each other?". There are plenty of other open tables that people could be seated at, but it really eliminated our ability to have a connecting conversation, as it felt like we were a party of 6 with us 2 in the middle!!! And 2 of the people clearly had some personal "issues" going on and were very disruptive. The space is small, but the visual displays of all the artwork make it a talking point conversation. The main artist was on hand & we found ourselves with the opportunity to talk with him while we waited on our food (which took a lot longer than expected). Funny, we ordered 1st & ours came out 10 mins later after everyone else. I decided to go with the Chicken and Waffles, and we also had the shrimp and grits. The food hit on all cylinders, and the only thing that was needed next was to make a move for a cocktail and a little walking in downtown to change it up. Will definitely return, but I will be more direct and vocal about seating that's for sure.

Watch in-depth video breakdown here…read morehttps://youtu.be/2LsMS2vxzRU?is=U5MfItnpo97tUvuq Dirty Lettuce had me questioning whether I was really in Portland or somehow got transported back down South. I'll admit, I came into this place with a slight bias. I'm from the South, and maybe it's ignorant, but when I hear "soul food," I automatically think of the South. I grew up around soul food. I know what good collard greens taste like. I know what good mac & cheese tastes like. So when I heard people on TikTok raving about a vegan soul food restaurant in Portland, Oregon, part of me was thinking: "Soul food? In Portland? How good could it really be?" Well... Dirty Lettuce shut me up pretty quickly. I originally found this place while searching TikTok for vegan restaurants in Portland. Dirty Lettuce kept coming up, and people especially hyped up the fried chicken and BBQ ribs, so I had to see for myself. I ordered the fried chicken meal with collard greens and mac & cheese -- two sides I take VERY seriously. The fried chicken was incredible. The seasoning and batter reminded me of some kind of combination between KFC and Popeyes, while the inside stayed moist and tender. At certain points I genuinely forgot I was eating vegan chicken. It tasted and felt like I was eating a Southern fried chicken plate somewhere in Mississippi or Alabama. Then came the collard greens. Man... These greens tasted like somebody's grandma was in the kitchen cooking Thanksgiving dinner. They serve them in a bowl with plenty of pot liquor, so initially I thought they might be a little watery. Nope. That broth was PACKED with flavor. It was almost like a collard-green soup, and I mean that as a compliment. The greens and the broth complemented each other perfectly. And the mac & cheese? A1. Creamy, rich, flavorful, with this subtle smoky taste that I wasn't expecting. I don't know exactly what they did to it, but whatever they did -- KEEP DOING IT. I also tried the BBQ ribs. They were good, although they were probably my least favorite item compared with everything else. But that's almost unfair because the chicken, greens and mac & cheese set the bar ridiculously high. I also went into the ribs with huge expectations after hearing people hype them up on TikTok, and I'm not really a ribs guy to begin with. So take my opinion there with a grain of salt. They were still good. My one area for improvement would be customer service. The woman who took my order wasn't rude or anything, but I personally would have appreciated a warmer greeting and more inviting energy. I'm very big on customer service, and I think the person at the front counter sets the tone for the entire experience. Maybe she was just having an off day -- we all have them -- but that was really the only part of my visit that didn't match the quality and energy of the food. The restaurant itself is small, clean and has some really cool artwork on the walls. It has a nice atmosphere without trying to be anything overly fancy. But the FOOD is the story here. At one point during my meal, I remembered that Black people make up a relatively small percentage of Oregon's population, and I became convinced somebody from that percentage had to be back there in that kitchen cooking. Because there was no way these greens were tasting this close to something my grandma would have made on Thanksgiving. I came in skeptical. I left thoroughly impressed. Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, or eat meat every day of your life, I'd recommend trying Dirty Lettuce. And if you're from the South and you're skeptical about getting legitimate soul food in Portland like I was? Go ahead and try it. It legitimately reminded me of a Southern Sunday plate from somebody's mama's kitchen. Dirty Lettuce proved me wrong -- and I'm glad they did. Highly recommended. It's been around 7 or 8 years since my last visit but I remember the fried chicken sandwiches coming with two thick, juicy, fried boneless thighs. I found it difficult to eat more than half a sandwich given the size and excess meat. Usually I would end up pulling one thigh out and saving it for later! I decided to visit again on a recent weekend trip to Portland, arriving for an early dinner at around 4:30 PM. It was surprisingly busy, with at least a quarter of the seats taken in the shared seating pool even though it was so early in the day. Luckily there wasn't a line to order and the food came out within 15 minutes. Fried Chicken Sandwich ($13) - Just as how I remembered, this sandwich is still huge with two breaded and fried thighs on a bed of lightly dressed, crunchy cole slaw. It's really tall and doesn't compress well due to the abundant crunchy elements throughout. There's the bun that's heavily toasted until extremely, almost aggressively, crisp and almost dark golden brown, absolutely doused in butter a la Texas toast. There are house pickles on the bottom bun, very quickly pickled such that it develops no acidity, but changes to that crunchy yet soggy pickle texture. The two chicken thighs are expertly breaded until full of crags and valleys, seasoned well, and fried until crisp. The crispy quality is of a lighter variety rather than a hard crunch, very delicate as compared to a typical flour based fried chicken dredge. The chicken is different from what I remembered. Instead of being juicy full thighs, almost an inch thick at the meatiest, these patties are thin, sad, like a single thigh butterflied and cut into fourths width-wise. The breading is far thicker than the chicken itself - in fact the chicken almost is an afterthought here, completely getting lost in all the breading and everything else in the sandwich. Seriously, look at some of the photos from other Yelpers taken in 2016 and 2017 and compare to my cross section photo. It's a huge difference. I bet it's a cost cutting measure and it certainly isn't an appreciated change. Maybe it's just a sign of the times - while the 2010s air waves thumped with 'All About That Bass," the thick thighs have now unfortunately been 2020s Ozempic zapped. The major downside of the sandwich is surprisingly the bun. It's by far the most dominant component of the sandwich. It's the crunchiest element and the butter flavor completely overwhelms the taste buds. This is why fried chicken sandwiches are usually served on soft and pillowy buns, or at least buns that are only lightly toasted, so the bread can focus on and cradle the crunch element rather than supersede it. This is the first time that I can recall a sandwich where the bun is the dominant entity. (3/5) Dandan Fries ($10) - These fries are deceptively filling. They're really snackable and give a distinct moreish quality. It's like a snack where I absentmindedly keep reaching in the bag for more and suddenly it's completely empty. The fries combine a somewhat lightly fried potato, a delicate crisp on the outside and an extremely fluffy almost fall-apart tender inside, with a nutty, spicy, and mouth tingly mala sauce. The sauce is thick, rich, filled with fatty goodness. It's actually a really good glue, adhering the crushed peanuts on the fries so well, nothing falls off while lifting the fries out of the bowl. I especially love the mini cornichons mixed into the fries. They add just a bit of sweetness and acidity that balances so well with the fatty dandan inspired sauce. Without them, I think the dish would feel far too rich. With them, the fries go down the gullet at a quick rate. (5/5) I can't help but feel a little disappointed at Basilisk. It's another one of those places that seems to have decided to sacrifice quality in order to keep prices relatively low. While I enjoyed the Dandan Fries, I'm not sure that's enough of a draw to get me to revisit. Bathrooms - Four unisex rooms shared with the other establishments in the building. Their description shall remain vague and they will be nameless. I wasn't feeling like franchise food so I asked him to look around. He steered us to Basilisk. Boy, he picked a good spot. Basilisk shares a communal dining space with a Vietnamese spot, a bar, and a pizza place. It wouldn't be fair to compare Basilisk to Nashville Hot Chicken because the flavors are different and unique in their own right. I probably could have downed the dandan fries and been happy with my meal but I'm an overachiever. We each had the sandwich, shared the dandan fries, and my son had koolaid flavored soft serve.
