Me and my buddie went here for brunch. Inside of the place has a nice interior but we prefer seating outdoor because it seems better and it really was. Staff was nice and polite and the service was pretty quick. Food has a nice portion and everything we ordered was good and delicious. We literally had a great time and we enjoy the overall experience. Prices are fair and reasonable too. Will definitely be back. Five star deserved. read more

I have been looking forward to dining here for quite some time but left feeling underwhelmed. Our avocado and lox toast entrees were just okay, nothing special other than presentation, that would warrant a $17 price for each entree. While the toast slices were heaping with lox and avocado, the toasts were so "tough" that we required steak knives instead of butter knives. And the egg served on the side with the avocado toast was somewhat cold. We enjoyed our unsweetened iced teas but all in all the $48 total price was way over-priced, even for locally sourced food. I've eaten at other farm-to-table restaurants and looked forward to returning...not feeling this way about Scratchboard. The staff and al fresco dining were the highlights of our lunch. The chefs need to up their game if they want to continue charging these prices. Sorry, but I'm scratching this restaurant off my list. read more

I just called 11:15am 9-25-21 to inquire about placing an order to pickup after I read how incredible the food was. The lady that answered the phone was so incredibly rude. When I asked about ordering a breakfast sandwich she stated "as I just told you; you can only order pickup per what's on the online menu. You cannot place the order over the phone." Love this place for brunch! I've been twice and loved the food and service both times. I started with the rose cardamom latte (equally beautiful and delightful) and the scone of the day. Their pastries are not to be skipped!! Today it was a blueberry scone with cinnamon mascarpone topping and it was huge -- plenty to split between the 4 of us. Last time we got the pastry board so we split all 3 with my sister and her husband... each one was drool-worthy. For our meals, I got the truffle toast and my husband got the short rib hash -- both so delicious. My sister loved her biscuit sandwich too. They have lots of options for various diets and allergies. We came with my infant daughter and they kindly brought us a carrier for her car seat. We really appreciate the responsive, warm service. We love this place! read more

I went in for the first time a few weeks ago and again this past Friday. My girls and I were so impressed with the food. The fact that they offer gluten-free bakery items was a huge deal and they were all delicious! First time I went to scratchboard kitchen I was very impressed the service was unmatched. The second time I went the service seemed a little rushed, however the food and drink were very satisfying. You know when you get your hopes up and it, in some crazy way, ends up being better than expected? Rarely happens but it did today! Being so over the usual neighborhood walks we decided to venture into downtown AH because of the mini or pop-up farmers market produce being offered. The asparagus, lettuce and tomatoes were the prettiest things I have seen. I almost felt incapable of using them haha! However we decided to order the Lox and Chicken sandwich. We had the champagne smash (yum), coffee, hot latte (foamy heaven), avocado toast (delicious, tons of avocado, pickled maybe radishes, salt and pepper, on a nice soft toasted bread, with light whipped cream cheese), eggs scrambled, the lamb dish, banana bread gluten free (yum) and rhubarb pastry (yum). My friend did not care so much for the lamb dish but he loved his scrambled eggs--he did say maybe it's him because he liked it's flavour. I also got a bacon blueberry grilled cheese to go and it was SO GOOD heated up for dinner. Service here is amazing. I don't think I've had table service like this other than at Tru Restaurant downtown. Not only do they repeatedly fill your water dish, coffee, and help you with ordering, and keep the table tidy, they also take and replace silverware at every course. Was really hoping for a good experience with this one after looking at other reviews. 3 of us went and had lunch. Had a difficult time ordering a pastry platter for a starter with our waiter. He kept pushing us to buy the ala cart and we wanted the trio for $15 which was on the menu. Come to find out we got charged $17 as an ala cart and we were told we were given an old menu by mistake. Ordered the blt salad, trust me nothing fancy at all. Spring mix, halved cherry tomatoes & bacon chunks. The pastry board was super dry and not worth it, we left half of it. My friend ordered the breakfast biscuit sandwich, biscuit was dry and cold. The matcha vanilla latte's were pretty good. I disputed the silly $2.00 overcharge for the pastry board and the waiter asked me to please talk to his manager for further assistance. The manager was super nice and apologized for our experience and offered a gift card, I thanked her but said no because we wouldn't return ever. Hi everybody. I have been to Scratchboard Kitchen probably 5 times over the course of the past year, and I have to say that the quality of their food has been OUTSTANDING every single time. This morning, I ordered the fried chicken biscuit sandwich (for the 4th time) and it was just so delicious. The chicken is extremely juicy and fresh. The batter is crunchy and flavorful. The biscuit is always perfectly cooked. And there is a mildly spicy sauce that they use on the sandwich that I can't quite place. Perhaps a spicy ranch hybrid of some sort. In any case, it's amazing. The staff at Scratchboard are all polite and friendly. The building is furnished beautifully. There is NOTHING I could possibly say negatively about this establishment. Just had breakfast there this morning, 6/5. Had to wait, no problem, great table. Arlington heights did a great job shutting down Campbell. Food was okay, service a little slow ( had to ask for condiments, never checked in on if we needed anything)but not unexpected. Had the short rib hash. Very good until the last bite, had to pull a hair from my mouth. When I told the waitress, she said "sorry to hear that, your total is $39.17"!! If you're looking for high end service with top quality ingredients- this is the place! The staff is warm and inviting, the atmosphere is clean and beautifully decorated, and the menu resembles the same quality you would receive at a high end restaurant downtown. The creativity behind the combination of flavors is just brilliant. There is a parking garage half a block away with four hour free parking; which means you can enjoy the town after brunch without feeling rushed. It has the city vibe without the commitment of the commute. As someone who travels quite frequently to the city for dining, I can appreciatively say thank you for bringing Scratchboard to our suburbs! read more

For some time I have been wanting to experience what so many have raved about, but breakfast (for two) here was underwhelming and expensive. Given its local popularity (and limited hours), I understand the host asking if we had a reservation (we didn't, but were still seated immediately), but it came off as slightly pretentious and off-putting. Service was good but that one coffee cup was cracked and the other was lipstick stained didn't help first impressions. My short rib hash served in a bowl over roasted potatoes was overly seasoned and the pickled mustard seed with kale and onions sauce was not a flavor fave (no balance, just salty sourness). My husband had the classic (eggs over easy bacon, & potatoes)...and while basic, it too wasn't stellar for the price. The yolks looked fresh, but the whites were rubbery and the potatoes cooked dry. Breads (sourdough and a biscuit) were also lacking. The biscuit was doughy and the fruit "jam" or purée side condiment was more of a tomato-paste consistency (not a texture favorite). The butter tasted and looked homemade, and that helped. I hate putting down any restaurant, especially during COVID, but this was not the local gastro delight experience I was hoping for. Maybe it was a off day, or maybe we just need to stick to west coast breakfast experiences, (where farm to table means a whole difference level of deliciousness). After posting, owner reached out promptly with explanation of COVID staff shortages (totally understandable and reasonable), while making a generous offer of a gift card (unnecessary but much appreciated). Estimated 30 minute wait, we walked around downtown Arlington Heights and got a frozen boba tea drink nearby because it's hot out (from a LOCAL small business, not Starbucks). Got the text to come back for table, we walk up "oh I'm sorry we need you to toss out the drink before we seat you" Us: "oh...wait do you serve frozen boba drinks?" Them: "no we don't allow any outside beverages." Us: "...we just literally got this while waiting for the table...you don't have an open bar we could have gone to...and you don't even make this kind of drink..." Them: "I mean if you want to chug it real quick that's fine." OH IS IT? IS THAT FINE?!? lol! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Why would you turn away a customer READY TO SPEND $$$ because they have a drink with them you don't even serve? As if there's ANY outcome from this that results in a favorable opinion of your restaurant. $16 for toast with avocado on it, $14 for lox, and they forced us to toss a drink they couldn't even sell us anyway because they don't make it, a drink we got while waiting for a table with them. Genius marketing. One star. Note to other restaurants: never do this to a customer, it's petty, loses you business, and big picture has zero benefit to your establishment. If the customer wants to eat your food but bring their own drink, maybe YOUR drinks aren't what they're looking for and you should still treat them like a customer ready to give you $$$. Also: service is VERY hit or miss. The last few meals we had here had a 15 minute wait to GET OUR DRINKS! The irony surrounding this is great. EDIT IN RESPONSE TO OWNER: I appreciate you reaching out, but we have tried your coffee before and prefer other caffeinated beverages which you don't serve. If we can't have a drink we at least enjoy with Scratchboard's relatively expensive meals because you don't make one (or the one you make isn't very good), that's really unfortunate. Certain customers are just going to be picky, especially when spending this much (and spending it as regularly as we did). It's just a very strange decision to turn away the $50-$60 tab because the customer might not want a $6 drink... On top of this, you're right: this was handled exceptionally poorly. In this particular instance we got a drink because it was hot and we were willing to wait 30+ minutes to dine with you, to give YOUR RESTAURANT our business, and then one of the FIRST interactions we get is "toss out or chug that frozen beverage now". That's just not how you treat patrons in any establishment, and the fact that your staff thought that was ok is pretty insulting. read more

Went there today for brunch. I was expecting more based on the reviews. Food was average. Portions were small. We tried the pastry board, crispy potatoes, biscuit sandwich, and avocado toast. While it all tasted ok, there was nothing that was particularly tasty or memorable that we were wowed. My husband had the salt honey latte and I tried the cardamom rose latte. Again just average. Service was good but was turned off when instead of providing a bill, he read out the bill for the entire table and immediately asked how much we wanted to tip. Now that was memorable. Back in 2020, my husband and I drove by Scratchboard Kitchen before it was open, and we couldn't wait for the day we felt comfortable visiting! I love that they are all about from scratch food and locally sourced ingredients, also female owned, and watching them hustle to make their new business work during the pandemic made me extra excited to visit! We finally visited over Fathers Day weekend. We made reservations and sat outside which was lovely. The patio space is not crowded or loud, it made for a very peaceful Sunday morning breakfast. We started with the Rose Cardamom Latte and the Iced Chai Lavender Latte which were both flavorful and refreshing. To eat we started with a pastry board, which had three different pastries. They were all delicious, but the standouts were the HUGE, cakey, moist, Strawberry Rosemary Scone and the homemade berry pop tart. We could have probably just had pastries and coffee and been fine, but for our first time, we had to try more food. My husband had the blueberry bacon brie grilled cheese with dijon, which was delicious. The spice of the dijon and the sweetness of the blueberry complimented each other well and was full of flavor. I had the Rye Pancakes with Metric Coffee Syrup and a side of grits. The pancakes were filling and the rye flavor was very prominent and the syrup was sweet and once again, complimented each other well. The grits were some of the best I've ever had, with cheese and black pepper. They were light and flavorful, not bland like grits can be. The service in our first visit was just ok, not bad but nothing above and beyond, but that certainly won't deter us from another visit. We cannot wait to return to Scratchboard Kitchen! read more

I ordered a breakfast sandwich and was told it would be 30 min wait because they were backed up. Had no problem waiting... 30 minutes turned into a full hour wait FOR A BREAKFAST SANDWICH. Would not recommend. They are inefficient and have bad service. Every reservation that came had to wait an extra 20-30 minutes. They should be more mindful of people's time. read more

The food and staff are outstanding and the ambience is very inviting and relaxing. The food is simply incredible - starting with the Orange Blossom Beet Latte which is as colorful as it is tasty. The Wild Strawberry Pop Tart is light and not too sweet and is a great starter. The Vanilla Bean Yogurt will having you want to lick the plate, especially the local honey. The star is the Crab Cake!! This is the best crab cake I have ever had (beating out those from Maryland and DC, and from star chefs like Bryan Voltaggio). It is crisp on the outside and moist on the inside, with a superb blend of herbs and the perfect amount of spice. Went to a Collaboration Dinner tonight - it was a collaboration between Scratchboard Kitchen and Uvae, a kitchen and Wine Bar from the city. Wonderful! Marvelous! Delicious! Phenomenal food, drink, and conversation with the wonderful people creating the experience! It was a delicious 5-course dinner prepared by Scratchboard Kitchen, paired with wines chosen by Uvae to match each course. Got to hear about how the food was prepared and background on each of the wines and the women behind the wines. Not only was the experience memorable, but it was powered by and a celebration of incredible women - from the business owners to the executive chef, to the sommelier, to the wine makers. Topping it all off a portion of the proceeds goes to Night Ministry, a charity helping those struggling with poverty or homelessness. For good measure, I got a couple bottles of wine to bring home with me. I would go to dinner here again in a heartbeat! If you don't get a chance to experience a dinner there, you can get breakfast or lunch at Scratchboard. Now I need to find a good time to go to Uvae in the city! read more

However, the BLT salad served with 1/4 piece of slab bacon very thickly cut and wasn't completely done. My 11 year old mentioned she saw the cook eating, while cooking. While the food is great, the strictly enforced hour and a half time limit ruined my experience. The hostess, I felt, was curt with us from the start ensuring we knew the minute we sat down we had 90 minutes. After 90 minutes, the hostess came back and reminded us our time was up, and then the proprietor came by and again reminded us. Perhaps Scratchboard considers 90 to 120 minutes and lightens up!!!!! Scratchboard Kitchen is a neighborhood gem. The food is simply about 10 notches above what you would expect. I had the sausage biscuit and my friend had a fried chicken on biscuit. Both were great. Just great. I also had a home made "Pop Tart". Holy cow! It was awesome! The overall vibe in this place is also super cool. Just a great vibe here. The service is also friendly. I'm in the area a lot because my aunt lives nearby. I will be returning soon. read more
