This was one of the most disappointing dining experiences. I ordered the rice and shrimp dish, and for $36, I expected much better quality. The rice was severely undercooked, and although the menu advertised tiger shrimp, the shrimp served were much smaller than the tiger shrimp I've had at other restaurants. The portion and quality simply didn't justify the price. The service was even more disappointing. We were a party of 17, and it felt like our table was an inconvenience. I personally asked for water three separate times and still never received it. No one at the table had their glasses refilled. There was little to no initiative to check on our table, refill drinks, or make sure we had what we needed. Instead, it felt like our server was rushing us through the meal. I understand that serving a large party can be challenging, but if one server wasn't comfortable handling a group of this size, they should have asked for assistance from other staff. Large parties deserve attentive service just like any other table. Overall, the combination of overpriced, underwhelming food and poor service made for a very disappointing experience. Out of town for a week with a friend and she mentioned she had never dined at a German restaurant before, so we ended up here! With it being mid-week we didn't think we would need reservations but the bartender that seated us quickly let us know since we didn't have a reservation we'd have to sit at a bar high-top. It wasn't said in an inviting way and the vibe from this particular employee/manager/owner (??) unfortunately permeated the entire evening. Because we were seated in the bar area, which was entirely fine with us, we overheard frequent swearing in general and what should have been more private convos between her and various wait staff as they came to retrieve their drinks for their tables. We advised the waitress it was my friend's first time eating German food and my friend asked several questions just to seek clarification. The waitress didn't engage with any enthusiasm, so I proceeded to guide my friend at that point. The food was a solid 3, warm and decent, but nothing special and not much seemed to be made in house based entirely on the appearance and taste. Was the experience awful? No. Would I return? Also no. Order takeout on a Saturday night. The person on the phone was very friendly and helpful taking the order. I arrived at the time I was told it would be ready. It was only a few minutes late. Very German ambience with the waiters and hostess all dressed in traditional German Oktoberfest outfits. Everything was boxed up nicely. I have to admit I was a bit taken back on the overall price of $83 plus tip for one entrée, one appetizer, an extra side, and two desserts. Way too expensive for what I received in my opinion. We started with the Cambert fried cheese. It was amazing. I highly recommend it. It is shareable by two people max, as it is really only 4 triangles of fried cheese with some cranberry sauce. For the entrée I ordered the chicken Wienerschnitzel. It was perfectly cooked, tender, and juicy. It had good flavor, but there were only two pieces of chicken with a small side of red cabbage and a small side of waffle fries (no ketchup). Pretty expensive chicken at $29. We also had an extra side of potato salad. I had thought it would've been warm German potato salad, but it was cold. For dessert, we ordered Black Forest cake (small and very thin slice) and a slice of Bavarian strudel with vanilla sauce. Both were just OK. I've had Black Forest cake in many US German restaurants and in Germany in Munich and Baden Baden. The actual chocolate cake part for each layer was disappointing and tasted like a box cake mix. Popped in here for dinner during an overnight stay as we road tripped through the area. We searched through highly rated locations, and this one came up and we love German food, so it was a pretty quick yes for us. We were greeted right as we walked in and were seated shortly after. It was relatively slow when we were there, but it was a tad early for dinner hour, so not too surprising. They have plenty of seating, and a full bar as well for those that are interested. The menu has some staple German food offerings like brats. They also have a solid kid's menu for family friendly vibes! Got some brats, had a drink, and got the little a kid's meal. Everything came out exactly as ordered and food was tasty! Staff checked in regularly and ensured we had all we needed. Although the location is large, it had an intimate feel, which made for a cozy energy. Overall: A Happy to say this lived up to the high marks that others have given it! Head in and enjoy. read more

The atmosphere is fantastic; very cozy, dark wood, and Bavarian flags throughout. The waitresses wear dirndls and white aprons, which is gorgeous! It's a good idea to make a reservation: On a Sunday afternoon, it filled up quickly, despite having three rooms! Our food arrived quickly and beautifully plated: Sauerbraten with red cabbage and a dumpling and carrots; Jaeger schnitzel with spaetzel and mushroom sauce. Food was good and so was service. Ambiance is always top notch. It is a long established eatery in the town and unique to the area.

We made a reservation (via phone) for New Years Eve and were super happy that they were able to accommodate us a little earlier than our reservation time. We had celebrated the very rainy do-nut drop at Meritus Park and were ready to warm up after the fireworks! The sign in the entry way said the dress code is business casual, though I was not wearing business casual, but I wasn't alone. Our server was super sweet, helpful and decisive when we asked for recommendations. We started with some bread and it came with butter and a cream cheese mixture with pickles, anchovies and capers. I got a cup of potato soup to warm up and it was just what I needed. I got a Hefeweizen to drink and ordered the chicken Wiener schnitzel with spaetzle. It came with lemon slices and that spritz of lemon really elevated the dish. It was so much food-I ended up taking some home. For dessert I got the cheesecake which had ricotta cheese and lemon. It wasn't too sweet, which was perfect. We also got a complementary spiced rum eggnog shot, which was so nice. read more

Very disappointing! Food was one of the worst one I ever had and too expensive for what you get! I was living in Bavaria, Germany for 25 years and never had a food like this. This is not a German food, it's fake! The herzhafte Sauerbraten was nasty and not fresh at all. Schweinebraten wasn't better and all was not fresh made. Definitely won't look like the photos! Such a great gem in Hagerstown. The food is authentic German and quite tasty as well. The beer is also traditional and comes in the giant steins Germany is famous for. We got way too much food but managed to eat most of it because it was so good. The wursts sample platter was a huge winner and included delicious dips for the sausages. The spaetzle was amazing. I finally got to this German restaurant with my hubs, who is a bit of a connoisseur of German food...As long as connoisseur means just eating the same thing at every German restaurant he finds. But he tries them all! Unfortunately for me, they have next to nothing for vegetarians. Like even WORSE THAN MOST! Which is shocking. From the interwebs, we learn that "As of 2024, approximately 8.43 million people in Germany are either vegetarians or significantly reduce their meat consumption. This is a notable increase since 2014." We have so many amazing meat substitutions that could work in german recipes, and I'll bet chefs in Germany are making some good stuff. See: impossible, beyond, and quorn brands. They rock. Yet they throw us a Mac and cheese made with Swiss cheese. Ew! Hard pass. I really dislike Swiss cheese and see zero reason to make Mac and cheese with it. Anyhoo. The atmosphere is nice, and reminds me of my time stationed in Bavaria. The broccoli soup was delicious. The lettuce salad was fine, as was my "entree" of French fries. We split an apple strudel for dessert. It was ok. I've had better. Hubs had the lunch portion of chicken wienerschnitzel with cooked carrots and spaetzle. He really enjoys the food, there. It's his favorite in the area. I'd say their food is okay - I was hoping for it taste similarly to the food in Germany but was slightly disappointed. The Wiener schnitzel wasn't as how I remembered it tasting like. A small, cozy restaurant on a very cold night! We were seated by the front window but, mercifully, it was not drafty. As soon as I saw the hostess wearing a dirndl, I knew we were in for the traditional American Bavarian restaurant experience, unfortunately uncommon these days. The decor matched the costuming, with decorative beams, shelves of steins, photos of edelweiss, a framed image of the Reinheitsgebot, maps, etc. The overall effect was cute without being cloying. The menu was simple and straightforward. We ordered a couple of Belgian lambic beers to accompany our meal and quickly received some rolls with whipped butter and cheese spread for the table. My partner ordered the Bayrischer Schweinebraten with spätzle, rotkohl/blaukraut, and green beans (substituting sides was no problem!) ; I ordered the Jägerschnitzel, which came with spätzle and Brussels sprouts. Both were incredibly delicious--the Schweinebraten was easily one of the best I've ever tasted. The portions allowed us to choose between eating a very filling meal or taking some home, and we opted for the latter. This allowed us to share a delicious slice of Black Forest cake, a difficult choice from among the beautiful desserts! A few people served our table, all of them attentive and kind. We stopped here for lunch, for the first time in many years, on our way to do some outlets shopping down the road. We were not disappointed. I'm happy to report that Schmankerl Stube is one of the few restaurants where a $15 lunch budget remains workable. Servings certainly were adequate without being immense or skimpy. Many traditional German favorites are on the lunch menu. The food was pretty good, though nothing was spectacular. Service was solid enough and very pleasant from both the young woman in training and her manager. We'd consider coming back of again in the area. We hope that Schmankerl Stube remains a going and successful establishment. Business seems to be struggling both here and in downtown Hagerstown generally, but it could have been the dreary weather on the day we visited. I get the fact that the rent probably is affordable, but I cannot help but wonder whether the restaurant might benefit by relocating to someplace more suburban and easily reached by (more) people and cars. read more

Atmosphere was comfortable and had a distinct German vibe without being crowded in decor. Service was quick and attentive throughout. I had a delicious doppelbach beer that was rich and smooth. Together my husband and I ordered the variety plate for 2. What a spectacular idea and surprise. As my husband lived in Germany and I am a lover of German Cuisine we were excited at the sheer volume and variety of dishes placed before us. The purple cabbage and sauerkraut were perfection, the sour beef was delicious and tender , full of flavor in the gravy, the sausage was a neat change and delicious. The schnitzel was thin and crisp the spaetzle perfectly prepared. Fantastic price and plenty for 2 with hearty appetites. The waiter was pleasant and took care, great enough that we ordered the Black Forest cake to take home and instead ate it on the spot even tho we're were stuffed! Highly recommend this place. Somehow the German food advertised got lost on the voyage over from Germany to Hagerstown. Server was ok, not much personality and didn't offer bread when the other tables were given it. Speatzle was dried up pellets and the jagersnitzel was terribly salty. One star is being generous. read more

As our hometown does not have a German restaurant and I love German food, I often try to eat at one while we are traveling. This one got great reviews; however, I can neither recommend the food nor the service. We came early - around 4:00 p.m.- because that's what worked on our road trip. I share that, because the place was not crowded at that time. I had the bratwurst with spaetzle and my husband had the wienerschnitzel dish. It's hard to mess up a bratwurst, and I'm happy to say that it was fine. The spaetzle was good enough...but not the best I've ever had. I make wienerschnitzel. It's hard to make it as tough as this one was! My husband was deeply disappointed. Lastly, our waitress could not have been more sour. I actually felt sorry for her as I assume no one could be that sad without something else going on. She did not want to talk though, so I'll just have to wonder whether she hated her job or whether something else was going on in her life! I really like properly made Schweinhaxe ( give me the skin has to be crispy and delicate like fried pork rinds) I've been blessed and that there's a restaurant near my house. It's mostly a Swiss bakery that used to make it three years and now they refuse to do it. I guess the cost of food and labor has made it prohibitive and as much of a cultural expression as it is, it's just not worth their time. I researched where I could find the Schweinhaxe and I looked at your history and pedigree and I said you'd be a good bet especially if you were oven frying it and taking orders or special days. On a good day it's an hour and a half to drive to Hagerstown, but I'm used to it and find it kind of relaxing. So I arranged to have a Schweinhaxe reserve for me and sure enough it was there, and it was I pleasing, and it was served me in an efficient, clean and courteous manner. NOW FOR THE DISAPPOINTMENT. THE SKIN WAS DRIED OUT WAS IN EDIBLE. I mentioned this to the waiter and he took no interest asking to give me a new one nor an alternative selection . However, the flesh inside or should I flaesk was wonderful. I couldn't finish it so I took it home for dinner and my family enjoyed it just the same. I happen to really like pickled red cabbage and sauerkraut so this was a comforting thing for me. The bread pudding tasted like turkey stuffing as I have enjoyed at Thanksgiving dinners. I gave it a try and I brought that home too. I may not in the future go out of my way to make a special trip to this restaurant, but if I'm there in Hagerstown, I'll visit again but order something else. Phenomenal and authentic German food. Literally everything on the menu is fantastic, but the sampler is good for newcomers. The staff are all very friendly and the atmosphere is very nice. The Bavarian theming really adds to the experience. Even if most of the tables are full, there is usually room at the bar. I've never had to wait. This place is worth a special trip. I have been to quite a few restaurants in Maryland, and this is one of the best, most unique choices out there. read more

I still come here. Anytime I head down south I will plan a stop in Hagerstown JUST FOR SCHWEINESHAXN. Last time, we had to leave home at 3AM to escape thru NYC at 5AM (because now that I'm officially 'old people' that's what our kind does), and my planned stop at the 'Stube got pushed up a few hours. Only on Wednesdays can you do spur-of-the-moment haxn! The rest of the time, you need to plan ahead by a day! Well, we were early, but the staff was able to accommodate us and packed up our haxn meals in to-go packages. We drove to a nearby park and picnicked at a table near the railroad tracks as it began to rain lightly, and even though the Stube forgot to pack us some plasticware, we had some stashed in the truck's glove box. But a plastic knife is no match for the haxn's delicious crispy rind. Out came my trusty 20-year old Gerber, and a savory haxn was once again being relished. Our German Shepherd whined and cried for treats, and we tossed him some because we love him and he's German so he'd appreciate it. Then a jumping spider came from somewhere and jumped on the haxn and I shooshed it off, but set aside a crumb of rind because if it was willing to risk arachnophobe death for the sake of pork delicacy then it deserved a treat. That crazy spider... You know it jumped on my truck and HID INSIDE THE DOOR JAMB and stowed away all the way to Georgia just hoping to get one more taste of Schmankerl Stube haxn? Looking forward to stopping here again and hoping to be able to dine on the patio with a fresh weissbier on tap!! read more
